[Palaeontology • 2008] Gerrothorax pulcherrimus • from East Greenland and a reassessment of head lifting in temnospondyl feeding



Abstract
The plagiosaurine Gerrothorax pulcherrimus, a ubiquitous faunal component of the Fleming Fjord Formation, is recognized by tubercular ornamentation, contact between the postfrontal and supratemporal, at least two tooth rows on the posterior coronoid, and a posttemporal fenestra that is small or absent. Gerrothorax pulcherrimus also possesses a derived pectoral morphology that includes an interlocking claviculocleithral complex and an interclavicle with paired posterolateral projections and a transversely truncated posterior margin. Gerrothorax pustuloglomeratus is a junior synonym of G. pulcherrimus; other Gerrothorax species cannot be differentiated from G. pulcherrimus. Flat-headed temnospondyls have been interpreted as having achieved a large gape by raising the skull rather than by lowering the jaw. No detailed, corroborating anatomical evidence from the atlanto-occipital joint, however, has ever been adduced. In G. pulcherrimus the widths of the atlantal and condylar facets are comparable, but dorsoventrally the condylar facets are 45% longer than the comparable dimension of the atlantal facets. Elevation of the skull occurred by atlanto-occipital rotation, and was facilitated by a radius of curvature of the dorsal part of the condylar facets that is shorter than that of the inferior part. From a resting, closed mouth position, G. pulcherrimus was capable of elevating the skull through an excursion of approximately 50°, a movement that rotated the quadrate forward and protruded the lower jaw. An elongate, broadly open neural canal in the atlanto-occipital region, and dorsal displacement of the occipital condyles, are related to relieving the spinal medulla of the sharp angular deformation that head lifting might entail.

It's not a jaw-dropping find ... but it is a jaw-raising one.

Recently found fossils of the extinct amphibian Gerrothorax pulcherrimus show that the creature lifted its head to eat, rather than lowering its bottom jaw as other vertebrates do. (The fossil, top, shows a view of the creature's skull as if from below looking up.)

The highly unusual action is not unlike that of a toilet seat.

"The animals could throw their heads upward and backward, creating a huge mouth gape with only the slightest lowering of the lower jaw—perfect for a bottom-dwelling ambush predator," Farish Jenkins, of Harvard University, said in a statement.

His team's research was published in the December 2008 issue of Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

The bony-armored Gerrothorax lived 210 million years ago, dwelling in warm lakes and catching fish in its gaping, fanged maw. About three feet (one meter) long, it had a flattened body and short, stubby limbs.

"It's the ugliest animal in the world," Jenkins told Reuters.

[Herpetology • 2011] Calumma vohibola • a new chameleon species (Squamata: Chamaeleonidae) from the littoral forests of eastern Madagascar

Abstract
We describe Calumma vohibola sp. nov., a morphologically distinct chameleon
species of the Calumma nasutum species group from littoral forest fragments of the northcentral east coast of Madagascar. Males and females of this species differ from all other species of the Calumma nasutum group by an almost absent rostral appendage, by a
characteristic stress colouration in the female consisting of a dark reddish ground colouration with many irregular light blue spots, and by significant sequence divergence in the mitochondrial ND2 gene (10.5 19.4% pairwise distance) and no haplotype sharing in the nuclear C-mos gene compared with other members of the C. nasutum group. A molecular survey of C. nasutumpopulations occurring near the type locality of the new species reveals an extraordinarily high genetic diversity within this morphologically conservative chameleon group. We suspect that C. vohibola might be restricted to a rather small and fragmented distribution range within the last littoral forest fragments along the coast. Owing to the unsolved taxonomic situation of the C. nasutum group, no reliable distribution data of any member of this group are available at present, and hence we cannot ascertain whether the extent of occurrence of C. vohibola is indeed as restricted as suspected. Intensive surveys and field studies are necessary to clarify the distribution limits of this new species and to assess its conservation status reliably.

Abstract
We describe Furcifer timoni sp. nov., a new colourful and morphologically highly distinct chameleon from Montagne d’Ambre National Park in northern Madagascar. Males of this rainforest species are characterized by short paired bony rostral appendages which are completely absent in females. The new species differs from all other Furcifer species except F. bifidus (Brongniart, 1800) and F. balteatus (Duméril & Bibron, 1851) by a light ventrolateral band that is composed of scales which are arranged in a rosette-like manner. It differs from F. bifidus and from F. balteatus by smaller size, shorter rostral appendages of the males, and colouration. We suspect that F. timoni may be a cryptic species of the forest canopy. Furthermore, we designate a lectotype for Dicranosaura bifurca var. crassicornis Gray, 1864 and confirm its synonymy with Furcifer bifidus.

Etymology: The senior author wishes to dedicate this new chameleon species to his son Timon Robert Glaw.
Distribution, habitat and habits: Furcifer timoni is only known from the Montagne d’Ambre National Park, between 750 and 900 m altitude. The discovery of this distinctive new Furcifer species in Montagne d’Ambre was very surprising since this area has been repeatedly and intensively surveyed for reptiles over m any ye a r s (Moc qua rd 1895; Ramanant soa 1974; Andr eone 1991; Kauffm ann 1994; Raxwor thy & Nussbaum 1994; Glaw & Vences 1994; D'Cruze et al. 2008). Apart from the type locality the species possibly occurs in the Marojejy National Park (Fig. 6) as well, since photographs of a female taken by G. Gomboc at Marojejy (between Camp 1 and Camp 2) resemble females of F. timoni and might represent this or a very closely related species. It differs from the studied type specimens (see Table 1) by a dorsal crest composed of more (ca. 20) tubercles (see Fig. 6). Similar to the situation at Montagne d'Ambre, all previous herpetological surveys in the Marojejy National Park since 1968 (see summary in Raselimanana et al. 2000) did not reveal any record of a chameleon resembling F. timoni, indicating that both the Montagne d'Ambre and the Marojejy populations had been overlooked, possibly due to them occupying a cryptic niche hidden high up in the tree canopy.

At Montagne d'Ambre, Furcifer timoni was exclusively found in mid-altitude primary rainforest during the rainy season, in close syntopy with Furcifer petteri. All specimens we captured in the years 2004–2008 were found in the period 20–26 February, roosting at night in the vegetation. The only male seen and captured during the same period was captured from a position more than 3 m above the ground. In contrast, gravid females were relatively common in late February, usually sitting on branches ca. 1.5–3 m above the ground. We suspect that they were just descending from the trees to bury their eggs into the ground. Data on egg
numbers of preserved females are given in Table 1.

The description of Furcifer timoni adds a distinctive new species to the Furcifer bifidus group. From a morphological point of view this group can be divided into two subgroups: F. bifidus and F. balteatus....

As a result of our recent herpetological surveys conducted in Madagascar, important new collections of large occipital-lobed Calumma chameleons have been made. These collections allow the recognition of six new Calumma species, in addition to the six currently recognized species. Five of the new species were located at specific montane regions, and one is broadly distributed in mid-altitude forest within the interior of the island. As previously reported for Brookesia dwarf chameleons, species richness in this Calumma group is greatest in northern Madagascar. An identification key is given for all 12 species and a new description provided for Calumma brevicorne, a species that has been confused with several other species. Previously described taxonomic uncertainties associated with this species are resolved, including the problematic status of the Calumma brevicorne tsarafidyi holotype, which we consider to represent the nominate form and unlikely to have been collected at Tsarafidy. Sexual dimorphism (including hemipenis development), biogeography, and conservation issues are also discussed for the group. The Bemanevika Lakes region of Southwest Tsaratanana harbors a new Calumma species not currently recorded for any protected area, and forest of this region is suggested for inclusion within a future reserve.

Taxonomic Notes: This widespread chameleon was redescribed by Raxworthy and Nussbaum (2006), who distinguished six additional species formerly included within C. brevicorne and clarified that the proposed subspecies Calumma brevicorne tsarafidyi was invalid. Genetic studies to clarify the taxonomy and distribution of this species and its relation to other species of large occipital-lobed Calumma are ongoing (Boumans et al. 2007).

Distribution and habitat.- This species has a broad latitudinal distribution in humid mid-altitude rainforest of Madagascar but is known from only a narrow elevational band between 810 and 1000 m elevation (Fig. 2). Higher elevation records previously attributed to this species (Brygoo, 1971) probably represent other species. The species is known as far south as the southern end of the Anosy Mountains and as far north as the southeastern limits of the Tsaratanana Massif. The locality for UMMZ 215317 is especially noteworthy, as it represents the first record for the northwest of the island, in an area of relict High Plateau Forest on the Analavory Plateau.

Abstract
A new species of arboreal forest viper (Serpentes: Viperidae: Atheris) from a forest fragment in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania is described and named Atheris matildae sp. nov. The species resembles the forest horned viper, Atheris ceratophora Werner, by bearing horn-like supraciliary scales but it differs in size, body proportions, scalation, scale ultrastructure, and distribution. Genetic divergence is also assessed and the two species have an estimated divergence time of approximately 2.2 million years. An overview of the genus Atheris in Tanzania, including new distribution data, is presented and the conservation status of the new taxon is discussed.

Abstract
A new species of forest viper (Atheris Serpentes: Viperidae) is described from Mount Mabu and Mount Namuli, northern Mozambique. This is the most southerly record of the genus, and the first record from Mozambique. Features of scalation, colour, body form and behaviour distinguish the new species from all other African Atheris, particularly its small size (maximum total length 384mm), retention of juvenile colouration in adults, and relatively low ventral, subcaudal and labial scale counts. It appears to be a dwarf, possibly paedomorphic, species that feeds among leaf litter on small frogs and geckos. The discovery of the new species in isolated populations in mid-altitude forest remnants on Mount Mabu and Mount Namuli, emphasizes the high conservation importance of the region.

Atheris hirsuta has been assessed as Vulnerable because it has a restricted range. Although its restricted range is found within a National Park, the surrounding habitat is becoming degraded and fragmented due to human encroachment on the area and subsequent clearing of forest for agriculture. The enforcement of the national park protection is also unclear, and as a result, future human encroachment on the park may affect the species. Due to its small distribution, monitoring of this species should be undertaken, and effective management and protection of the national park may ensure the survival of the species.

Recent reptile collections from southwestern Cameroon contain four specimens referable to Atheris subocularis Fischer, currently considered a synonym of Atheris squamigera (Hallowell), and previously known only from the holotype collected prior to 1888. Phylogenetic analysis of a 647 bp DNA fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene indicates that A. subocularis forms a monophyletic group. Based on this analysis and a suite of morphological characters that readily differentiate A. subocularis from its congeners, we resurrect A. subocularis Fischer from the synonymy of A. squamigera (Hallowell). Female A. subocularis remain unknown, and the distribution of this taxon lies completely within that of its closest relative, A. squamigera. We provide taxonomic accounts for A. subocularis and A. squamigera in the area of sympatry and discuss evolutionary hypotheses for the presence of A. subocularis.
