A new island was born today [20 Nov 2013] in the Pacific Ocean in Japan's Izu (or Volcano) island chain. It is produced by a new submarine eruption which is currently taking place about 500 m southeast of Nishino-Shima island. 

The eruption was first spotted by Japanese navy this morning at 10:20 (local time) who documented surtseyan activity at the eruption site (explosive interaction of sea-water and lava, generating violent jets of steam and ash). It appears that the eruption has already built an island of about 200 m diameter in size, which suggests that the vent was already located in very shallow waters. 

A small steam and ash plume rising to about 600 m. was reported by VAAC Tokyo. The last known eruption of the volcano occurred in 1973 .

Abstract
Numerous volcanoes exist in Marie Byrd Land, a highland region of West Antarctica. High heat flow through the crust in this region may influence the stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Volcanic activity progressed from north to south in the Executive Committee mountain range between the Miocene and Holocene epochs, but there has been no evidence for recent magmatic activity. Here we use a recently deployed seismic network to show that in 2010 and 2011, two swarms of seismic activity occurred at 25–40 km depth beneath subglacial topographic and magnetic highs, located 55 km south of the youngest subaerial volcano in the Executive Committee Range. We interpret the swarm events as deep long-period earthquakes based on their unusual frequency content. Such earthquakes occur beneath active volcanoes, are caused by deep magmatic activity and, in some cases, precede eruptions. We also use radar profiles to identify a prominent ash layer in the ice overlying the seismic swarm. Located at 1,400 m depth, the ash layer is about 8,000 years old and was probably sourced from the nearby Mount Waesche volcano. Together, these observations provide strong evidence for ongoing magmatic activity and demonstrate that volcanism continues to migrate southwards along the Executive Committee Range. Eruptions at this site are unlikely to penetrate the 1.2 to 2-km-thick overlying ice, but would generate large volumes of melt water that could significantly affect ice stream flow.

[News • 2013] The Phylogeny of Little Red Riding Hood: Study Provides Insights into Origins, Evolution of Folktales

Abstract

Researchers have long been fascinated by the strong continuities evident in the oral traditions associated with different cultures. According to the ‘historic-geographic’ school, it is possible to classify similar tales into “international types” and trace them back to their original archetypes. However, critics argue that folktale traditions are fundamentally fluid, and that most international types are artificial constructs. Here, these issues are addressed using phylogenetic methods that were originally developed to reconstruct evolutionary relationships among biological species, and which have been recently applied to a range of cultural phenomena. The study focuses on one of the most debated international types in the literature: ATU 333, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. A number of variants of ATU 333 have been recorded in European oral traditions, and it has been suggested that the group may include tales from other regions, including Africa and East Asia. However, in many of these cases, it is difficult to differentiate ATU 333 from another widespread international folktale, ATU 123, ‘The Wolf and the Kids’. To shed more light on these relationships, data on 58 folktales were analysed using cladistic, Bayesian and phylogenetic network-based methods. The results demonstrate that, contrary to the claims made by critics of the historic-geographic approach, it is possible to identify ATU 333 and ATU 123 as distinct international types. They further suggest that most of the African tales can be classified as variants of ATU 123, while the East Asian tales probably evolved by blending together elements of both ATU 333 and ATU 123. These findings demonstrate that phylogenetic methods provide a powerful set of tools for testing hypotheses about cross-cultural relationships among folktales, and point towards exciting new directions for research into the transmission and evolution of oral narratives.

His findings demonstrate that the Little Red Riding Hood shares an ancient root with another popular folktale the Wolf and the Kids, although the two are now distinct stories.

Surveys confirm three populations of the Endangered hog deer in Cambodia

A joint team from the Royal University of Phnom Penh’s Centre for Biodiversity Conservation (CBC) and Fauna & Flora International (FFI) have found three previously unknown populations of the Endangered hog deer in Cambodia.

The hog deer, today listed as Endangered on The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, once ranged throughout large areas of South and mainland Southeast Asia, but has suffered regional population decimations due to hunting, habitat loss and degradation. Cambodia is home to the only known wild populations of the Axis porcinus annamiticus (or Hyelaphus annamiticus) subspecies of the deer.

A field team, funded by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund, conducted interview surveys in local villages, following up on hog deer reports with rapid field surveys looking for tracks or dung.

Finned Monster Chomped Heads Off Ancient Amphibians

— Talk about a creature feature: A bizarre boomerang-headed amphibian that burrowed in a seasonal pond in what is now Texas often met its doom in the jaws of a reptilian fin-backed mammalian ancestor, new fossils reveal.  


These two weird critters were residents of the Permian period 298 million to 250 million years ago, before dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Dimetrodon, the jaguar-size finback, looked like a lizard but was actually more closely related to modern mammals. Diplocaulus, the boomerang-head, was a truly strange amphibian with an impractically wide, bony skull.

"It's just so weird," said study researcher Robert Bakker, the curator of paleontology at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. "This is an example of unintelligent design."


Unintelligent though a broad head may have been for a burrowing creature, the boomerang-head managed to survive for 45 million years during the Permian, a period known for its extinctions, Bakker told LiveScience.

Bakker and his colleagues discovered the Dimetrodon and Diplocaulus interaction in the Craddock bone bed in Baylor County, Texas. The bone bed is scattered with the bodies of boomerang-heads, curled in what were once burrows. The amphibians seem to have burrowed into the mud to survive the dry season, the researchers reported here Monday (Oct. 28) at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America.

"The bed had a reputation of just being a stewpot with everything mixed together," Bakker said. "That's totally wrong. It's beautifully layered."

The excavations revealed that boomerang-heads were common in the pond — and that something was snacking on them.

"We have hundreds of these, mostly chewed, and even the guys in burrows got attacked," Bakker said.

The shed teeth, "like bullets in a crime scene," revealed the attacker to be Dimetrodon, he said. The finback's sharp fangs and long snout would have enabled it to bite boomerang-heads hiding in burrows, perhaps after partially excavating them with its sharp, digging claws.

One cluster of eight juvenile boomerang-heads was found stacked together, suggesting they all occupied the same burrow. Dimetrodon likely killed the top three, including one whose nose was bitten clean off (taking part of the brain with it). The other five boomerang-heads survived the Dimetrodon, only to perish during the next dry season, Bakker said.

The find corroborates a theory first posited by famed paleontologist E. C. Olson, who argued that Dimetrodon must have eaten the boomerang-headed amphibians.

"[Dimetrodons are] the equivalent of Velociraptor and T. rex, you'd think they'd be eating big plant-eaters," Bakker said. But there weren't many big plant-eaters in the Permian era, so Dimetrodon ate smaller amphibians instead. (The largest Diplocaulus skull ever found measured about 17 inches (43 centimeters) across, Bakker said.)

Keeping track of the 35,000+ species listed under CITES has now been made easier through the development of an online database-driven Checklist of CITES species.

This state-of-the-art electronic resource provides users with an intuitive interface where queries can be made using not just scientific or common species names but also CITES Appendices, countries or regions, and any combinations thereof. The display of results can be further refined by selecting criteria such as synonyms or authors' names. Users can thus produce a tailored Index of CITES species listing, for instance, all CITES species occurring in a specific country. The history of listing is displayed on screen for each taxon and can be printed off in a single document covering all taxa.

[Herpetology / News • 2013] Anolis proboscis | Pinocchio Lizard or Horned Anole • Rediscovered In Ecuador After Being Thought Extinct For 50 Years

Biodiversity in the cloud forests of South America are renowned for producing a seemingly constant parade of beautiful, bizarre creatures. One such tropical oddity is the Pinocchio Lizard, Anolis proboscis, which was once presumed extinct and recently spotted by a team of biologists in Ecuador for only the third time in 15 years.

After three years of searching for this oddity, a group of photographers and researchers from TropicalHerping.com, Paolo Escobar, Lucas Bustamante, Diana Troya and Alejandro Arteaga were finally able to document and photograph this lizard in January of this year.

Known as the Ecuadorian Horned Anole, this bizarre creature  earns its title because of a rhinoceros like protuberance that grows out of its snout.

As you might guess, its common name was coined for its resemblance to a particular wooden puppet when he wasn’t being honest.

Pinocchio anoles Anolis proboscis are an endangered species and have been found in only four locations, mostly along a single stretch of road.

First discovered in 1953, this unique animal was only seen on a handful of occasions for the following 15 years and was thought to have gone extinct until being rediscovered in 2005 by a group of birdwatchers that noticed one crossing a road. Another expedition summer of 2010 led by Jonathan Losos, a herpetologist from Harvard leading a group of herpetologists from Belgium, Ecuador, and the United States also found the anole.

The Pinocchio Lizard goes largely unseen due to its cryptic camouflage that helps it blend into the dense vegetation of the cloud forest. The team got around this by looking for the lizards at night instead of during the day because diurnal anoles are apparently much easier to find after dark (who would have thought?).

While Ecuadorian Horned Anoles and other day anoles hide in  plain sight during the day, they turn a pale, easy to spot whitish color when lit up with a headlamp at night!

Global Trade Regulation Group Extends Reach 

Threatened species of sharks, manta rays, elephants, and rhinoceroses will get some relief thanks to precedent-setting decisions taken at a meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) that concluded yesterday in Bangkok.

Rising demand for shark fins, shark meat, and manta ray gills is on an unsustainable trajectory according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Earlier this week, a CITES committee approved what is called an Appendix II listing for five shark species and two species of rays, all of which are considered endangered or vulnerable by IUCN. Appendix II covers species that might face extinction if current trends continue, and CITES allows international trading of these species only if there are controls ensuring their survival in the wild. (An Appendix I listing—intended for species threatened with extinction—outlaws international commercial trading.)

The committee's decision survived a challenge during the closing plenary session on 14 March. Both IUCN and the World Wildlife Fund called the decision "historic."


"There has been an impasse for a number of years over whether or not CITES could further move into the listing of commercially valuable marine species that all the evidence suggests are being harvested unsustainably," says Simon Stuart, who chairs the IUCN's Species Survival Commission.

Those opposed to the changes argued that regional fisheries management organizations should address the threats to sharks and rays. But the stocks "have not been managed sustainably," Stuart says. He acknowledges that enforcement will be a challenge. He thinks that CITES should work in concert with regional organizations to manage the fisheries in a sustainable way based on scientific input.

Enforcement was the key issue in the decisions on ivory and rhino horns. Parties to the convention, as participating countries are called, decided to initiate a process requiring China, Kenya, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Uganda, Tanzania, and Vietnam to develop plans to crack down on illegal ivory and rhino horn trading. "CITES is ready to get tough on the countries that are the focus of the illegal [ivory] trade," Stuart says.

Over the course of the 12-day meeting, delegates agreed on tighter controls over the trading of tropical timber and on some species of tortoise and freshwater turtles. They also decided to ban international commercial trade in the critically endangered freshwater sawfish. But a call to tighten restrictions on trading in polar bear hides, claws, and teeth put forward by the United States and supported by Russia was defeated after opposition from Canada, Denmark (Greenland), and Norway.

The final score at the 12-day meeting was 55 proposals accepted, nine rejected, and six withdrawn. "Overall, we are pretty pleased," Stuart says. One concern is that "the science isn't being followed as closely as it should be," he says.

The next CITES meeting will be held in South Africa in 2016.

These cubs aren't just cute, they're genetically important. Clouded leopards are listed as "vulnerable" on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. Due to hunting and deforestation in Southeast Asia, there are thought to be fewer than 10,000 of these animals, said to have an "arboreal lifestyle," in the wild. 

Also not helping the species' survival: male clouded leopards' somewhat inexplicable propensity for attacking, sometimes killing, prospective mates. (See, e.g., Kitchener, A.C. (1999). Mate killing in clouded leopards: a hypothesis. IZN (International Zoo News).)

The zoo is trying to reduce these risks by hand-rearing these new babies -- which means giving them bottles, and otherwise taking care of them, while making sure not to "imprint" in a way that'll stop them from being able to interact productively with other clouded leopards. 

“We feed them, burp them, and put them back to sleep,” hand-rearing expert, and senior mammal keeper at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute headquarters, Kenneth Lang told Smithsonian Zoogoer in 2011. “We don’t try to make them pets.” 



Early pairing with mates also seems to increase the likelihood of passing on these cutie-pie genes. 

This is the second litter for mother Sita and father Ta Moon, who had another set of twins in 2011. 

Ta Moon, born in March 2009, was the first clouded leopard cub born at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. 

Lindsay Renick Mayer, a zoo spokesperson, told that the cubs are a boy, weighing 800g, and a girl who now weighs 700g. (That's under two pounds each -- full-grown, the male will likely reach about 50 pounds, the female about 35.) 

"Their eyes and ears are now open," she said. "Their activity level is increasing daily and they now recognize when we are in the room and about to feed them. They are normally found asleep and wrapped around each other when we enter the room. The feedings have been dropped from 7 times a day to 6 times a day and will be dropped again next week.

“Extinct” seabird discovered breeding 50 km from Auckland City

Researchers are elated to find the sparrow-sized New Zealand storm petrel, thought extinct until 2003, is breeding on Little Barrier Island Hauturu in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. The team of researchers is led by Chris Gaskin and Dr. Matt Rayner from the University of Auckland.

The seabird is listed as critically endangered by the International Union of the Conservation of Nature and finding the breeding site is vital for their conservation.

Three specimens of the diminutive 35g seabirds were collected off New Zealand in the 1800s and are held by museums overseas. Since its rediscovery, there has been speculation as to where this seabird breeds.

The team camped on the Poor Knights Islands, Mokohinau Islands and Little Barrier Island using radio receivers to zero in on the breeding site.

“It’s like looking for a needle in the haystack,” said Chris Gaskin. A critical breakthrough came last year when the project team found brood (incubation) patches on birds caught at sea. This determined the timing of incubation in New Zealand storm petrel, the best time to find breeding birds on land.

This year, 24 birds were caught at sea using specially designed net guns and small 1g radio transmitters were fitted to each bird. Automated receivers narrowed down the search. Team members, based at a remote camp on the north coast of the Little Barrier Island, using handheld receivers and spotlights, confirmed that birds were coming ashore under the cover of darkness and moving inland. This prompted moving the search area. Then, when a signal was picked up of a bird stationary in forest at night, team members were able to get a clear fix on where that site was.

Dr. Rayner says: “The site being monitored is very fragile and with birds at a delicate stage in their breeding cycle. We are using automated equipment for the most part and maintaining a hands-off approach, although team members visiting the vicinity have also been keeping watch.”

“On Friday morning a bird was discovered on the ground, possibly having just left its burrow. At the same time team members detected another bird, this one most probably on a nest,” said Chris Gaskin. “It’s an amazing result for our enthusiastic and dedicated team.”

Members of the research team will remain on the island over the coming weeks. Aerial surveys are also being used to try and establish the distribution and size of the population.

The Hauraki Gulf Forum is about to publish a Hauraki Gulf seabird management strategy and research plan drawing on the work of Chris Gaskin and Dr. Rayner and New Zealand and international collaborators.

Chair of the Hauraki Gulf Forum, John Tregidga, said locating the breeding ground was internationally significant and further highlighted the importance of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park as a globally significant biodiversity hotspot.

Dr Rayner, a Little Barrier Island trustee, said the discovery reiterated the importance of careful management of conservation jewels, such as Little Barrier Island and surrounding marine environments.

The project has been funded this year by grants from Mohammed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, Birdlife International Community Conservation Fund, The Little Barrier Island Hauturu Supporters Trust and ASB Trust, Auckland Council, Forest & Bird Central Auckland Branch and Peter Harrison/Zegrahm Expeditions, with further support from the Department of Conservation, Hauraki Gulf Forum and Landcare Research.

Nineteen Baby Siamese Crocodiles Released in Lao PDR  

 — The Wildlife Conservation Society announced today the successful release of 19 critically endangered baby Siamese crocodiles into a local wetland in Lao PDR, where they will be repatriated into the wild.

The 19-month-old hatchlings, approximately 70 cm in length, are part of a head-starting program where crocodiles are hatched at the Lao Zoo for eventual release into their native habitat.

Conservationists estimate that less than 250 Siamese crocodiles remain in the wild due to overhunting and habitat loss.

The release took place in the village of Than Soum in the Xe Champhone wetland complex in Savanakhet Province near where the eggs of the 19 crocodiles were found during wildlife surveys in 2011.

The hatchlings were transported from the Lao Zoo to a 'soft release' pen and will remain for several months to acclimate with the local area. Members of the Village Crocodile Conservation Group will guard the pen and provide supplementary feeding of the hatchlings to ensure their survival. Once the rainy season begins, the water level in the wetland will rise and allow the crocodiles to swim away, where they will be monitored periodically by conservationists.

A public ceremony will take place on March 6th in Than Soum where local community members will celebrate this collaborative effort with WCS, Government of Lao PDR, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Minmetals Resources Limited, and the Lao Zoo.

WCS Lao PDR Program designed and implemented the release as part of the Community-based Crocodile Recovery and Livelihood Improvement Project. The goal of the program is the recovery of the local Siamese crocodile population and restoration of associated wetlands, linked by socio-economic incentives that improve local livelihoods.

"We are extremely pleased with the success of this collaborative program and believe it is an important step in contributing to the conservation of the species by involving local communities in long term wetland management," said Alex McWilliam a conservation biologist with WCS's Lao PDR Program. "The head starting component of this integrated WCS program represents a significant contribution to the conservation of this magnificent animal in the wild."

Classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the Siamese crocodile grows up to 10 feet in length. The species has been eliminated from much of its former range through Southeast Asia and parts of Indonesia by overhunting and habitat degradation and loss.
In 2014, the head-starting component of the program will be taken on by local communities in the Xe Champhone wetland complex. WCS has already conducted training for this transition and implemented a trial program of rearing young crocodiles at Than Soum village.

The birth of a rare giant armadillo has been recorded for the first time in Brazil. Researchers studying the 'vulnerable' animals first saw a male and female sharing a burrow thanks to automated camera traps. Five months later, images showed the female favouring one burrow and soon after the distinctive nose of a baby appeared in shot. The young armadillo was photographed in full as it moved to another home with its mother. Oldest Known Wild Bird Hatches Healthy Chick
The oldest known wild bird in the United States has hatched a chick — for the sixth year in a row.

The Laysan Albatross named Wisdom, thought to be at least 62 years old, hatched a healthy-looking chick on Sunday (Feb. 3), according to a statement from the U.S. Department of the Interior. Wisdom and her young chick inhabit Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), which is famous for its Laysan albatross population.

The world’s oldest known living wild bird at age 62 gave birth to a healthy chick that hatched Sunday, challenging the conventional wisdom about how long birds remain fertile.

This bird, named Wisdom by scientists who stuck a tag on her ankle years ago, has lived longer than the average Laysan albatross, which dies at less than half her age. Scientists thought that, like other birds, albatross females became infertile late in life and carried on without producing chicks.

Wisdom, which hatched the chick at the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge in the Pacific Ocean, has raised chicks five times since 2006, and as many as 35 in her lifetime.

Just as astonishing, she has likely flown as many as 3 million miles since she was first tagged at the Midway Atoll at the end of the Hawaiian Island chain in 1956, according to scientists who have tracked her at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

“It blows us away that this is a 62-year-old bird and she keeps laying eggs and raising chicks,” said Bruce Peterjohn, chief of the Bird Banding Laboratory at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Laurel.

“We know that birds will eventually stop reproducing, when they’re too old to breed anymore,” he said. “The assumption about albatross is it will happen to them, too. But we don’t know where that line is. That in and of itself is pretty amazing.”

Wisdom’s advanced-age delivery not only could help scientists understand more about the albatross, but also more about the health of the oceans.

Thousands of Laysan and other species of albatross have been banded since 1956, when scientists started studying them at the atoll to determine why so many were striking Navy aircraft, killing the birds and damaging the machines.

The tracking bands, also called tags, weren’t all that reliable. They generally fall off after 20 years, sometimes before being replaced. Wisdom went through six, which were replaced before she lost them.

As far as Peterjohn and other scientists know, “half the birds could be 60 years old,” he said. “These birds could be much older than we think.”

Nineteen of 21 albatross species are threatened with extinction, and their demise might be linked directly to humans. Long-line fishing has depleted their numbers. Fishermen throw bait in the ocean to lure fish, but they also lure albatrosses that get hooked and drown.

The birds also swallow marine debris. An estimated five tons of plastic are unknowingly fed to albatross chicks each year by their parents, the USGS said.

This might not kill the chicks quickly, but it restricts their food intake, leading to dehydration. Also, the birds are threatened by invasive species, such as rats and wild cats.

Albatrosses aren’t the world’s largest birds, or the oldest — parrots in captivity have lived to age 80, Peterjohn said. But they are stunning, and easily the largest sea bird, with wingspans as wide as eight feet, “like a sea gull on steroids,” Peterjohn said.

They’re the oldest-known bird in the wild. Wisdom edged out the second-oldest-known albatross to give birth, a 61-year-old named Grandma, of the Northern Royal species, Peterjohn said. But Grandma hasn’t been seen at her nesting ground at Taiaroa Head, New Zealand, in three years and is presumed dead.

Albatrosses mate for life, suggesting that Wisdom probably had to find a new, younger mate maybe twice down the line. They work at a relationship, first by getting their groove on. “They dance together,” said Chandler Robbins, a retired senior scientist at USGS.

Robbins was in his 40s when he clasped that first aluminum band around Wisdom’s ankle in 1956.

Still working at age 81, he returned to the atoll in 2001 and, amid the thousands of albatrosses that nest there, picked up a bird with a tag that traced back to one with a signature he recognized — his own. Scientists gave Wisdom her name and estimating her age at 49.

[Cetology / News • 2013] ช่วยปลาวาฬที่ว่ายน้ำเข้ามาติดแอ่งน้ำตื้น เกาะลิบง จังหวัดตรัง | Fin whale (or maybe Blue Whale) stranded in shallow Trang waters, Andaman Coast of Thailand, finally freed



เมื่อเวลา 12.30 น. วันนี้ (25 ม.ค.) ผู้สื่อข่าวได้รับแจ้งจาก นายพงษ์ศักดิ์  นิธิกรกุล  เจ้าพนักงานประมงชำนาญการ หัวหน้างานชุมชนสัมพันธ์  ศูนย์บริหารจัดการประมงทะเลอันดามัน ว่า  มีชาวบ้านพบปลาวาฬฟินว่ายน้ำเข้ามาติดแอ่ง  บริเวณหน้าเขาบาตูปูเต๊ะ  ต.เกาะลิบง อ.กันตัง จ.ตรัง  หลังรับแจ้งจึงเดินทางไปพร้อมกับเจ้าหน้าที่ฯ  ซึ่งได้มีการเตรียมเรือยาง  และอุปกรณ์ในการช่วยเหลือทางทะเล รุดไปตรวจสอบ

เมื่อไปถึงพบว่าชาวประมงพื้นบ้านกำลังใช้เรือหางยาว จำนวน 2 ลำ เพื่อขับต้อนปลาวาฬตัวดังกล่าว ที่ดิ้นรนหาทางออกอยู่ในน้ำที่เหลือลึกเพียงประมาณ 1 เมตร บริเวณหน้าเขาบาตูปูเต๊ะของเกาะลิบง  เพื่อให้ปลาวาฬสามารถออกไปสู่ทะเลลึกได้  หลังจากที่ปลาวาฬตัวดังกล่าวว่ายน้ำจนเพลินในช่วงน้ำขึ้น  แต่เมื่อน้ำลงก็ไม่สามารถว่ายน้ำลงกลับได้ทัน  ทั้งนี้พบว่า  ปลาวาฬตัวดังกล่าวเป็นปลาวาฬฟิน ตัวสีดำ  ความยาวลำตัวประมาณ  10 เมตร  น้ำหนักประมาณ 2 ตัน  และในช่วงจังหวะที่ปลาวาฬกำลังดิ้นรนไปมาในน้ำ  ก็ทำให้เกิดมีบาดแผลบาดเจ็บจากการถูกโขดหินไปทั่วตัว  เช่น  บริเวณหน้าอก  ใต้ท้อง ส่วนหาง  และช่วงบริเวณข้างลำตัว  นอกจากนี้ก็ยังพบมีเหาวาฬเกาะกินเต็มไปหมดอีกด้วย  ทั้งนี้ทางด้านชาวบ้านต้องใช้เวลาในการช่วยเหลือปลาวาฬอยู่นานประมาณ  3 ชั่วโมง  เนื่องจากต้องรอให้น้ำขึ้นเต็มที่  เพื่อให้ปลาวาฬสามารถที่จะว่ายน้ำออกไปได้  จนในที่สุดก็สามารถช่วยได้สำเร็จ  ท่ามกลางความดีใจของชาวบ้านที่ช่วยกันต้อน และนักท่องเที่ยวชาวต่างชาติที่เดินทางมาลุ้นเชียร์ตลอดแนวเกาะ

ด้านนายพงษ์ศักดิ์  นิธิกรกุล  เจ้าพนักงานประมงชำนาญการฯ เปิดเผยว่า  สำหรับทะเลตรังนั้นจะมีปลาวาฬ อาศัยอยู่ 2 ชนิด คือ  ปลาวาฬบรูด้า  และปลาวาฬฟิน โดยปลาวาฬฟินจะมีจำนวนน้อยมาก และหาดูได้ยากแล้ว  โดยปกติปลาวาฬทั้ง  2 ชนิด  จะว่ายน้ำเล่นบริเวณหน้าเกาะกระดาน  และรอบเกาะลิบงในจุดที่เป็นน้ำลึก แต่ครั้งนี้เป็นครั้งแรกที่ปลาวาฬฟินว่ายน้ำเข้าใกล้ฝั่ง และไปติดแอ่ง  คาดว่า คงจะพลัดหลงกับฝูงปลาวาฬด้วยกัน  และหลงติดเข้าไปในแอ่งน้ำตื้นดังกล่าว  อย่างไรก็ตามทางเจ้าหน้าที่ฯและชาวบ้านต่างก็อยากให้หน่วยงานภาครัฐ   เข้ามาดูแลฝูงปลาวาฬดังกล่าว  ซึ่งมีจำนวนเหลืออยู่น้อยมากในทะเลตรัง  เพื่อเป็นจุดดึงดูดให้นักท่องเที่ยวเข้ามาเที่ยวชมปลาวาฬและสัตว์ทะเลหายากในทะเลตรัง  เพื่อเป็นการส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวของจังหวัดตรังอีกด้วย.

The first known nest of one of the world's rarest birds - the Critically Endangered Stresemann's Bristlefront - has been discovered in Brazil. Of perhaps equal significance is that strong evidence of active nestlings was also found.
