[Botany • 2026] Pseuduvaria sirindhorniana (Annonaceae) • Phylogenetic and Morphological Evidence supports the Recognition of A New Species from southern Thailand

Abstract
Based on the molecular phylogenetic analyses of six plastid DNA regions (matK and rbcL exons; trnL intron; atpB-rbcL, psbA-trnH and trnL-trnF intergenic spacers) and including 57 samples of Pseuduvaria, as well as thorough morphological studies, Pseuduvaria sirindhorniana (Annonaceae, Miliuseae) is described and illustrated here as a new species from Narathiwat, southern Thailand. The new species belongs to a major clade that also includes P. fragrans, P. gardneri, P. glossopetala, P. kwangtungensis, P. multiovulata and P. phuyensis. Pseuduvaria sirindhorniana is morphologically most similar to P. glossopetala, but differs by having basally connate (vs. free) sepals, larger petals, elliptic-ovate (vs. obovate) outer petals, inner petals that are only connivent at the apex (vs. connivent from the base to ± the midpoint and at the apex), with openings formed from the base (vs. openings formed from ± the midpoint). Pseuduvaria kwangtungensis turns out to be a putative sister of the new species, but the two are morphologically dissimilar in several traits, such as leaf base, inner petal appearance and glands on the inner side of the inner petals.

 Pseuduvaria sirindhorniana differs from the morphologically most similar species, P. glossopetala, by having basally connate (vs. free) sepals, larger petals, elliptic-ovate (vs. obovate) outer petals, inner petals that are only connivent at the apex (vs. connivent at the apex and from the base to ± the midpoint), with openings formed from the base (vs. openings formed from ± the midpoint). 

Etymology — The specific epithet honours H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, who has continuously supported the study of plant taxonomy in Thailand and worldwide, on the auspicious occasion of her 72nd (6th cycle) birthday anniversary (2 April 2027). She has also been instrumental in establishing the Plant Genetic Conservation Project under the Royal Initiative (RSPG), which aims to train personnel and develop plant genetic resources for the conservation of plant diversity, with benefits extending to farmers and related sectors of the country.

[Invertebrate • 2025] Alloscopus sago & A. jantapasoae • Two New Species of the Genus Alloscopus Börner, 1906 (Collembola: Orchesellidae: Heteromurinae) from southern Thailand

Abstract 
Two new species of Alloscopus Börner (Orchesellidae: Heteromurinae) are discovered and described from southern Thailand. The first species, Alloscopus sago Jantarit & Manee, sp. nov. was found in a sago palm forest (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.), a true sago palm species native to Southeast Asia and typically located in lowland freshwater swamps in Phatthalung Province. The second species, A. jantapasoae Jantarit, Nilsai & Manee, sp. nov. was sampled from a dark zone within a cave environment in Trang Province. Both species are characterized by the absence of eyes and mucronal spines, the presence of a PAO, two rows of smooth chaetae on the manubrium, and dental spines. However, they differ in several morphological features, including the number of macrochaetae on the ‘A’ series of the head, Th. II and Abd. IV; labial basis chaetotaxy; the presence of smooth chaetae on tibiotarsi; the number of chaetae on both the anterior and posterior ventral tube; and the number of the inter-teeth on the claw. The discovery of these two new species increases the total number of Alloscopus species recorded in Thailand to six species with a total of 17 recognized species globally. An updated key to the world species of Alloscopus is also provided.

[Botany • 2026] Asplenium paucipinnatum (Aspleniaceae) • A New fern Species from southern Thailand, based on morphological and molecular data

Abstract
Asplenium paucipinnatum, a new fern species from Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, is described. Morphologically, it closely resembles A. micantifrons in having short-creeping and radial rhizome steles, 1-pinnate laminae, deeply incised pinnae on the basiscopic margin, and sori arranged in two rows close to the costae. However, A. paucipinnatum is readily distinguished by having fewer lateral pinnae (< 14 pairs), obliquely rhombic pinnae with acute apices and obtuse marginal teeth, contrasting the more numerous pinnae (> 15 pairs), lanceolate pinnae with acuminate apices, and acute teeth in A. micantifrons. Phylogenetic analyses based on multiple plastid DNA regions (atpB, rbcL, rps4, rps4-trnS, trnL, and trnL-F) support A. paucipinnatum as a distinct lineage, forming a sister relationship with a clade containing A. lepturus and A. contiguum. The combination of morphological and molecular evidence supports the recognition of this new taxon. Ecological notes, geographic distribution, and a comparison with related species are also provided.

Description. Asplenium paucipinnatum resembles A. micantifrons (Tuyama) Tuyama ex H.Ohba by its short creeping and radial rhizomes, 1-pinnate laminae, pinnae deeply incised at basiscopic side of margin, and sori borne in 2 rows closely set along to the costa, but the former has lateral pinnae fewer than 14 pairs, pinnae oblique rhombic, pinna apex acute, and marginal teeth obtuse. In contrast, A. micantifrons has lateral pinnae more than 15 pairs, pinnae lanceolate, pinna apex acuminate, and marginal teeth acute.

 ABSTRACT
Lobophora (Dictyotales, Phaeophyceae) is an ecologically important seaweed genus in tropical and subtropical marine ecosystems. This alga exhibits cryptic diversity and morphological plasticity, which require taxonomic delineations that primarily depend on DNA analyses, complemented by morphological and ecological data. Species diversity and distribution within Southeast Asia remain understudied compared to well-documented regions such as the Caribbean and the western Pacific. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the genus Lobophora along the east coast of Thailand, integrating DNA-based surveys with morphological analyses. Extensive sampling across the Gulf of Thailand revealed 14 well-supported monophyletic clades of Lobophora. Among these, we described four new species (L. lewmanomontiae sp. nov., L. ogawae sp. nov., L. thiemmedhii sp. nov., and L. velasquezii sp. nov.) and reported three new national records (L. abscondita, L. henae, and L. quangtriensis), thereby bringing the Thai total to 21 species. When combined with previous records, 30 species have now been recorded from Southeast Asia, with 12 of which are endemic to the region. This study also emphasizes the importance of extensive sampling across broader areas, which enhances our understanding of biogeographic distributions and their implications for coastal ecosystem management.

Summary
Nepenthes siamensis, a new species from Khlong Phanom National Park in southern Thailand, is described. This species, closely related to others in section Montanae, stands out due to its distinct inflorescence characteristics, including bracts present on both male and female flowers, and unique pitcher morphology. It is found approximately 650 km north of the most similar species based on morphological comparison, N. sanguinea and N. thai, which are also both terrestrial and lower montane. It shares characters with them, such as a climbing habit and oblong to subspathulate leaves with 2 – 3 longitudinal nerves on each side of the midrib. This discovery significantly extends the known range of section Montanae.

Recognition. This species differs from Nepenthes thai in leaf base margins clasping the stem for ½ of the circumference, not decurrent (vs clasping stem ¾ – ⅚ of circumference, bases decurrent down the stem for 3 – 12 mm in N. thai); lower pitcher cylindrical in lower ¾ of length, infundibular in upper ¼ (vs ovoid-cylindrical); spur filiform (vs branched); bracts present on all flowers at the bases of pedicels in the male inflorescence and on the lower half of the pedicel in the female inflorescence (vs bract absent).

Abstract
We describe Gekko dam sp. nov. based on type specimens from a limestone hill in Palian District, Trang Province, southern peninsular Thailand. The new species is also found in Satun Province, southern peninsular Thailand, and in Perlis State, northwestern Peninsular Malaysia. A member of the subgenus Gekko, it differs from all currently recognized Gekko species by the following combination of morphological characters and pattern: maximal known snout-vent length of 149.1 mm, lack of contact between nostrils and rostral, 21–24 interorbital scales between supraciliaries, 72–83 scale rows around midbody, 12–14 dorsal tubercle rows at midbody, 26–28 ventral scale rows at midbody, 22 precloacal pores in males, two postcloacal tubercles on each side of the base of the tail, 14–17 subdigital lamellae on 1st toe and 19–21 on 4th toe, a Y-shaped mark on head, white spots on head, dark grey to black dorsal background with four regular bands of contrasting white spots on dorsum between limb insertions, throat and venter white with orange patches, and a copper iris.

Etymology. The specific epithet dam is a noun in apposition, invariable, based on the Thai noun or adjective ดำ ("dam"), meaning black, black color, or dark, in reference to the dark color of the new species. 
We suggest the following common names: ตุ๊กแกดำ (Took-kay dam; Thai); Black Tokay Gecko (English), Gecko tokay noir (French), and Zwarte tokeh gekko (Dutch).

Similar to Tarenna stellulata (Hook.f.) Ridl. and Tarenna insularis (Ridl.) Ridl. in having corolla lobe tips that are divergent in the bud, but differing from the former in the glabrous lower leaf lamina surface that is smooth to the touch (vs minute erect hairy lower leaf lamina surface that is rough to the touch), glabrous (vs conspicuously ciliate) corolla lobe margins and acute (vs awl-like) corolla lobe apex, and differing from the latter in the broadly triangular (vs linear) calyx lobes 0.5–1 mm long (vs 1.5–3 mm long) and glabrous (vs densely short-puberulent) corolla outer surface in bud.

Abstract
Discartemon sirindhornae Artsamart & Siriboon, sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on specimens collected from Chumphon Province in Peninsular Thailand. The new species possesses a flattened shell with a slightly convex spire, a weakly angular last whorl, and an intermediately expanded whorl. The apertural dentition consists of one parietal lamella, one ridge-like and one small lower palatal, one small basal, and one small columellar lamella. The penis is long, slender and twisted distally, with penial hooks separated by elevated longitudinal folds. The current study advances knowledge of the streptaxid land snail species in Thailand and emphasizes the value of limestone habitats for preserving biodiversity.

A new genus and species Tenomaculosa hexapunctata gen. et sp. n. of praying mantis (Mantodea) is described from the southern Thailand. The new genus distinguished from related genera by the presence of six distinct black spots on the internal surfaces of the profemur and, in lateral view, by widened posterior part of the pronotum. Additionally, unidentified species of the genus Mesopteryx Saussure, 1870 is found in Thailand for the first time. A key to the genera of the subtribe Tenoderina in the Oriental region is also given.

Genus Tenomaculosa Tarapipattanakun et Unnahachote, gen. n.

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS. Tenomaculosa gen. n. can be distinguished from Tenospilota by the pronotum being thicker towards the end in lateral view (in Tenospilota, the thickness is equal throughout the entire pronotum). The internal surfaces of the profemur presents six distinct black spots (only one large black spot is present around the tibial spur groove). The forewings without any pattern (with dark patches present in the discoidal areas), and the hindwings are transparent (with five black horizontal stripes patterns on the discoidal area).

ETYMOLOGY. The genus name is a combination of the word “Teno” referring to the related genus Tenodera, which shares some characteristics, and the Latin word “maculosa”, meaning spotted, in reference to the black spots on the profemur.

ETYMOLOGY. The specific name “hexapunctata” is a combination of the word “hexa” meaning six, and the word “punctata” which is a Latin word meaning points. The name refers to the six black points on the inner side of the profemur of a new species.

A new species of pill millipede, Rhopalomeris sirindhornae sp. nov., is described from southern Thailand based on morphological characteristics and genetic barcoding. This species is distinguished from its congeners by light yellowish body with pale pink lateral margins on each tergum, a pair of black obtuse subtriangular patches on the dorsum, a pair of faded black dots on the lateral side of the thoracic shield, a light yellowish venter with faded light brown spots on pleurites 3–11, and a roundly triangular to spatulate syncoxital lobe of the telopod. Phylogenetic trees based on a fragment of the mitochondrial COI gene confirmed the entity of the new species and revealed a close relationship with R. carnifex and R. nigroflava. Interspecific genetic distances between R. sirindhornae sp. nov. and other Rhopalomeris species ranged from 9.97–14.36%, with the shortest distance to R. carnifex. Intraspecific genetic distances within each Rhopalomeris species ranged from 0–6.16%. A new distribution map of the presently known Rhopalomeris is also provided.

Abstract
Goniothalamus obovatus Chaowasku & Damth., a new species of Annonaceae from southern Thailand is described and illustrated. It is morphologically most similar to G. banii endemic to Vietnam, but can be distinguished from it by possessing terete (vs ± angular) branches, a subcordate to cordate (vs rounded) leaf base, shorter inner petals, an inner petal apex that is ± acute (vs long-acuminate), a lower ratio of inner petal to outer petal length, fewer stamens per flower, a staminal connective apex that is ± apiculate (vs rounded), fewer carpels per flower and densely hairy (vs glabrous) ovaries. The conservation status of the new species is provisionally assessed as Data Deficient.

Diagnosis: The new species morphologically most similar to G. banii B.H.Quang, R.K.Choudhary & V.T.Chinh endemic to Vietnam (Quang et al., 2016) mainly in leaf, sepal and outer petal shape, as well as number of ovules per ovary, but distinguishable from it by having terete (vs ± angular) branches, a subcordate to cordate (vs rounded) leaf base, shorter inner petals, an inner petal apex that is ± acute (vs long-acuminate), a lower ratio of inner petal to outer petal length, fewer stamens per flower, a staminal connective apex that is ± apiculate (vs rounded), fewer carpels per flower and densely hairy (vs glabrous) ovaries (Table 1).

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to the obovate leaves of this species.
