[Entomology • 2026] Hexacentrus bidentatus & H. nanlingensis • Two New Species of the Genus Hexacentrus Serville, 1831 (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae: Hexacentrinae) from China

 Abstract
This paper reports two new species of the genus Hexacentrus Serville, 1831 from Guangxi and Guangdong, China, i.e. Hexacentrus bidentatus sp. nov. and Hexacentrus nanlingensis sp. nov. In addition, morphological characters and ecological photographs are provided. The male calling songs are also presented for both new species and Hexacentrus expansus Wang & Shi, 2005 for the first time.

Abstract
The genus Melanabropsis currently consists of four micropterous species and one macropterous species from continental Asia and west Pacific islands. Yin (2024) predicted several potential habitats suitable for Melanabropsis species including Taiwan and Guizhou. In this study two additional new species from Taiwan and Guizhou are described, confirming the distribution prediction proposed by Yin. The distribution pattern of seven Melanabropsis species is discussed.

[Entomology • 2026] Neophlugiolopsis? nigrivertex • One New Species of the Genus Neophlugiolopsis Pan & Bian, 2024 (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae: Meconematinae) from Guangxi, China

The genus Neophlugiolopsis was established by Pan & Bian (2024), with Neophlugiolopsis longiprocera Pan & Bian, 2024 as the type species. It resembles Phlugiolopsis Zeuner, 1940, Paraphlugiolopsis Bian & Shi, 2014, Aphlugiolopsis Wang, Liu & Li, 2015, Pseudophlugiolopsis Wang, Zhou & Chang, 2020 and Guangxia An, Chen & Shi, 2023, but can be distinguished from them mainly by the following characters: tegmina reach the middle of abdomen, and posterior area of male tenth abdominal tergite is strongly produced posteriorly into a long process. 
 
In this paper, a new species from Guangxi, China is described and tentatively assigned to the genus Neophlugiolopsis. All type specimens are deposited in the Museum of Hebei University.

Etymology. The specific name refers to the black dorsal surface of the vertex. It is derived from Latin nigri-, meaning “black”, and vertex, meaning “top of the head”.

[Entomology • 2026] Montana tomorri & M. dani • Two New Species of Bush-crickets (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) from the Mountains of south Albania

Abstract
Two new taxa of Platycleidini have been discovered in southern Albania, with one of them extending its range to the Greek border. In this paper, we analyse their morphological features, the characteristics of their acoustic signals, and phylogenetic relationships. These taxa clearly belong to the cluster of species comprising the four genera Montana, Amedegnatiana, Parnassiana, and Metrioptera s. str. The results of this study suggest their placement within the genus Montana, and we describe two new species: Montana tomorri sp. nov. and Montana dani sp. nov. Our findings highlight the urgent need for a reassessment of the tribe Platycleidini using integrative approaches that incorporate molecular and bioacoustic data, in order to better understand monophyletic groups and evaluate the consistency of current generic classifications.

[PaleoEntomology • 2026] Qiongqi multispurous • A New Cricket (Orthoptera: Trigonidiidae) from mid-Cretaceous Kachin Amber in Northern Myanmar

Abstract
A new species of Trigonidiidae, †Qiongqi multispurous sp. nov., is described from mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber. It can be definitely attributed to the family Trigonidiidae, but excluded from the two extant subfamilies. It also exhibits a different morphology from all reported trigonidiids genera and species from the Mesozoic, including subapical/apical spurs on the hind tibia and setae-like processes on the hind basitarsomere. This new discovery provides novel morphological information of Cretaceous Trigonidiidae, and highlights the potential of biodiversity of Cretaceous crickets.

[Entomology • 2026] Dolichopoda balrogi Delving too Deep: Morphological and Molecular Description of A New Cave-dwelling Dolichopoda (Orthoptera: Rhaphidophoridae) from Kastellorizo Island, Greece

Abstract
A new species of cave cricket, Dolichopoda balrogi sp. nov., is described from the Greek island of Kastellorizo (Dodecanese, Levantine Sea). The species is documented from artificial subterranean habitats, as no accessible natural caves are known on the island. Detailed morphological analysis of both sexes reveals a unique combination of characters, including the structure of the male epiphallus, the shape of the tenth tergite, the presence of styli on the male subgenital plate, and the morphology of the female ovipositor, which clearly differentiate it from all known congeners. Comparative morphology indicates strong affinities with Anatolian species of Dolichopoda, particularly D. sbordonii and D. lycia, and no close relationship with the Aegean species complex occurring on islands of East Aegean and the adjacent Anatolian coast. These affinities are further supported by molecular phylogenetic analyses inferred from DNA barcoding. Both Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses consistently recover the Kastellorizo lineage as a distinct and well-supported clade nested within the southwestern Anatolian lineage of the genus. The discovery of D. balrogi sp. nov. represents the first documented occurrence of an Anatolian lineage of Dolichopoda within European territory, underscoring the unique biogeographical character of Kastellorizo as a Greek territory with pronounced Anatolian biogeographical affinities. This finding emphasizes the importance of integrated morphological and molecular approaches in resolving species boundaries and evolutionary relationships and contributes to the growing evidence of underestimated biodiversity in the eastern Mediterranean region.

Dolichopoda (Dolichopodabalrogi Kalaentzis & Alexiou, sp. nov.

Diagnosis.— Because of the unarmed fore and middle femora, the new species described here belongs to the genus Dolichopoda. It is a member of subgenus Dolichopoda because of the absence of spines on all femora, the presence of spines on the fore tibia, and the non-bifurcated median process of the epiphallus. The new species is similar to D. sbordonii, a species endemic to the adjacent Anatolian coast. Both share a non-bilobate median process of epiphallus and the presence of styli at the subgenital plate of the male. The new species differs mainly in the shape of the median process of epiphallus (trapezoidal vs triangular) and the shape of the X tergite of the male (traces of lateral lobes vs lateral lobes). The female of D. sbordonii differs mainly by the shorter ovipositor with smaller number of denticles on the ventral valve. Dolichopoda lycia is a species also present on the adjacent coast. It shares with D. balrogi sp. nov. the shape of the tenth male tergite, with only inconspicuous lateral lobes and a similar ovipositor in females, with 15 denticles on the ventral valve. It differs in the bilobed median process of the epiphallus and the absence of styli.

Abstract
Recent field work in Sabah state of Malaysia in Borneo, as well as Mindanao, Negros and Siquijor Islands in the Philippines has led to the collection of crickets from the family Phalangopsidae. This allows us to review the taxonomy of Luzonogryllus Yamasaki, 1978 from the Philippines and Sabah. We also describe a new species from Mindanao: Luzonogryllus (Apterozaclaappa Tan & Alo, sp. nov. We also present new locality records for Luzonogryllus (Apterozaclamindoroensis Gorochov, 2006 in Negros and Siquijor Islands. Lastly, we also present new material of Strophiola lugubrina (Stål, 1877) from Mindanao and Negros Islands.

[Entomology • 2026] Xistra balinsasayaoensis • A New Species of the Genus Xistra Bolívar, 1887 (Orthoptera: Tetrigidae) from Negros Island, the Philippines

Abstract
A new species of genus Xistra Bolívar, 1887, subgenus Xistra, from Negros Island, Visayas (the Philippines) is described here—Xistra balinsasayaoensis sp. nov. (Balinsasayao’s horned pygmy grasshopper). It was first documented in May 2017 by an amateur photographer and was finally collected in October 2023. The species belongs to the subgenus Xistra due to its smooth pronotum with a low median carina and moderately high horns. There are now a total of six species of Xistra, three of which are members of the subgenus Xistra. The photographic records of living specimens and their microhabitats, including their bryophyte associates, are provided as well.

[Entomology • 2025] Pulchricranae mirabilis • A New fascinating Genus of Subfamily Hemiacridinae (Orthoptera: Acrididae) from Thailand

Abstract 
A new genus Pulchricranae gen. nov. (type species: P. mirabilis sp. nov.) is described from grassland in Sakaerat Environmental Research Station in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand. This genus is similar to the genera Binaluacris Willemse and Bacuita Strand from Philippines by the presence of outer apical spines on hind tibiae; by tegmina abbreviated; by prosternal spine flattened; by lophi of epiphallus large, trapezium with rounded apex; and by basal and apical penis valves separated, without any sclerotized flexure. However, Pulchricranae gen. nov. differs from Binaluacris by fastigium of vertex with rounded margins; by tegmina shorter and slightly broader; by prosternal spine in male with broadly rounded apex, in female apex with rounded triangular notch in median part; by mesosternal lobe broader than long; by male cerci conical, much narrower near apical part. New genus also differed from Bacuita (known by females only) by female fastigium of vertex strongly short and broad; tegmen broader, with apex rounded; hind femur surpassing the apex of abdomen; subgenital plate with apex nearly truncate. The previously ungrouped genera of the subfamily Catantopinae, Binaluacris and Bacuita, are transferred to the tribe Cranaeini of the subfamily Hemiacridinae based on external morphology and male genitalia. The composition of the tribe Cranaeini is briefly discussed.

Abstract
We describe four new species of the genus Dolichopoda from various areas of Greece, namely D. athosensis sp. nov., D. dirussoi sp. nov., D. karoutsosi sp. nov. and D. kotsabasi sp. nov. New locality records for Greece for the genera Dolichopoda and Troglophylus are given, in addition to the presence of Troglophilus brevicauda as a new country record. We discuss the relationship with the already known species of the area.

[Entomology • 2021] Nisitrus crucius, N. malaya, N. rindu, ... • Revision of the Cricket Genus Nisitrus Saussure (Orthoptera: Gryllidae: Eneopterinae) and Descriptions of Five New Species

ABSTRACT
Nisitrus Saussure, 1878 is a diurnal and monophyletic group of eneopterine crickets found in parts of Southeast Asia. Species often have vivid colourations which make them charismatic photograph subjects among macro photographers. However, their taxonomy has not been revised since their original descriptions, whereas there are also species awaiting to be discovered and described. A synoptic revision is therefore needed prior to studying the phylogenetic relationships of the genus, and before undertaking more precise studies on biogeography and evolution of traits. By holistically incorporating information about general morphology, male and female genitalia, and bioacoustics, we revise the taxonomy of these crickets and recognise 10 valid species of NisitrusFive new species are described: N. crucius Robillard & Tan sp. nov. from Borneo; N. danum Robillard & Tan sp. nov. from Borneo; N. hughtani Robillard & Tan sp. nov. from Sumatra; N. malaya Robillard & Tan sp. nov. from Malay Peninsula; and N. rindu Robillard & Tan sp. nov. from Borneo. We redescribe N. brunnerianus and N. insignis; describe the calls of N. malaya sp. nov., N. musicus and N. vittatus. We consider N. sumatrensis as a junior synonym of N. insignis; and N. marginata as a junior synonym of N. vittatus. Nisitrus hyalinus requires further revision. We also consider N. maculosus as a dubious name.

Genus Nisitrus Saussure, 1878

Type species: Nisitra vittatus (Haan, 1844).

Remarks on type species: Kirby (1906) and Chopard (1968) listed N. vittata as the type species of Nisitra and treated the original type species N. marginata Walker, 1869 as a synonym of N. vittata. Subsequent authors listed N. vittatusas the type species of the replacement name Nisitrus, although Otte (1994) reinstated N. marginatus as a valid species (Braun 2013 in Cigliano et al. 2020). The present revision revalidates the synonymy of N. marginatus under N. vittatus, making N. vittatus the valid type species of the genus.

Diagnosis (emended from Robillard & Tan 2013) Among genera of Eneopterinae, Nisitrus is characterised by an elegant, wasp-like, slender and colourful body (Figs 7–9). Size average for subfamily. Colouration vivid, dominantly yellow, whitish and black, with species-specific patterns, particularly in the head (Figs 10–11), pronotum (Figs 11–12) and FWs (Figs 12–14). Characteristic head shape with narrow fastigium and large prominent eyes with thin dorso-ventral black stripes. Pronotum setose, square-shaped to slightly trapezoidal, usually bisinuated posteriorly. Metanotum with large glandular structures in males, made of a wide pit on scutum and a pair of posterior pits on scutellum, with glandular pores mostly organised by groups of 2 or 3 (Fig. 15). FWs more or less as long as abdomen. Male Nisitrus show modified FW venation and characteristic glossy transparency. Hindwings longer than FWs, bicoloured in most species, their base transparent with a wide dark posterior margin. Legs long and thin, FIII with a characteristic narrowed area before knee. Other general traits: TI with two tympana, inner one slit-like, covered by a swollen cuticular expansion; outer tympanum oval, its membrane transversally plicate in dorsal half. TI with three apical spurs; outer dorsal spur missing. TII with four apical spurs, inner longest. TIII with three inner and three outer apical spurs, median longest on each side; four pairs of subapical spurs, inner and outer spurs almost straight, their apex hook-like; TIII serrulate over whole length, slightly furrowed dorsally. Tarsomeres III-1 with one row of dorsal spines on external edge in addition to apical spines. Apical claws of legs slightly indented. Both males and females show characteristic genitalia.

Abstract
This contribution to the taxonomy of Xya Latreille, 1809 (Orthoptera, Tridactyloidea, Tridactylidae) adds descriptions and photographic illustrations of two new species: Xya xishangbanna sp. nov. and Xya yunnanensis sp. nov. from Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China. Xya xishangbanna sp. nov. can be diagnosed by the shiny dark brown hind femora, and the epiproct with a shallow bottom of the middle “v-shaped” crack in the upper part and straight sides; Xya yunnanensis sp. nov. can be diagnosed by the compound eye bearing no narrow band along the inner margin, and the epiproct with the bottom of the side edge with a sharply angled protrusion and a narrow lower anchor-shaped base less than 1/2 the width of the upper one. Distributional information and bionomics for these two new species and photos for the habitat are given. A key to all Chinese species of Xya is provided.

Two new species, Anaxiphomorpha nonggangensis sp. nov. and Anaxiphomorpha manereserratus sp. nov., are reported from Guangxi Province, China. Descriptions and illustrations for the new species and a key to all known species of Anaxiphomorpha are provided.
