[Botany • 2026] Thismia daemona (Thismiaceae) • A New Species of Thismia sect. Geomitra from Thailand supported by morphological and molecular evidence

Abstract
A new species of Thismia from Thailand, Thismia daemona is described based on morphological characters and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Morphological characters were examined from fresh and spirit materials using a stereo microscope. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted based on three nuclear (SSU, ITS, LSU) and two mitochondrial (atpA, matR) markers. The new species is characterized by coralliform roots, blackish flowers, reddish orange and fleshy outer tepals, inner tepals forming a mitre with three slender claviform appendages, inner surface of floral tube possessing irregular transverse bars in lower half and finely reticulations in upper half, epidermis of transverse bars and reticulations covered with white translucent trichomes, and translucent blue stamens with recurved apex. Phylogenetic analyses support its placement within Thismia sect. Geomitra, with a sister relationship to T. betung-kerihunensis. In addition, the new species is assessed as Critically Endangered according to the IUCN Red List categories and criteria.

Thismia daemona Seelanan & Chantanaorr., sp. nov.

Diagnosis. Thismia daemona is somewhat similar morphologically to T. limkokthayi, but differs in having reddish orange and fleshy outer tepals, outer surface of mitre covered with irregular papillae, inner surface of floral tube possessing irregular transverse bars in lower half and finely reticulations in upper half, epidermis of transverse bars and reticulations covered with translucent white trichomes, translucent blue stamens, and absence of mitre foveae.

Habitat and ecology. Thismia daemona was found growing amongst leaf litter, under shade of lower montane forest with small bamboo, at elevations 950–970 m.

[Diplopoda • 2026] Enghoffosoma chiangmaiense, E. minutum, E. chanabunae • Integrative Taxonomy of the Millipede Genus Enghoffosoma Golovatch, 1993 (Polydesmida: Paradoxosomatidae) in Thailand and Myanmar, with Descriptions of Three New Species

Abstract
Although comprehensive studies on the Southeast Asian flat-backed millipede genus Enghoffosoma Golovatch, 1993 in Thailand have begun quite recently, in 2014, continuous field surveys have since revealed a steadily increasing species diversity. Based on extensive new material collected from Thailand and Myanmar, three new species are described using an integrative taxonomic approach that combines morphological characters and mitochondrial COI DNA barcoding: Enghoffosoma chiangmaiense Srisonchai & Likhitrakarn sp. n. from northern Thailand, Enghoffosoma minutum Srisonchai & Likhitrakarn sp. n. from northeastern Thailand, and Enghoffosoma chanabunae Srisonchai & Likhitrakarn sp. n. from the Tanintharyi Region, southern Myanmar. COI sequence comparisons, available for E. chanabunae Srisonchai & Likhitrakarn sp. n. and E. chiangmaiense Srisonchai & Likhitrakarn sp. n., reveal significant interspecific genetic divergences (K2P distances) from their congeners, ranging from 13.53–16.75% and 13.53–18.14%, respectively. While DNA data were unavailable for E. minutum Srisonchai & Likhitrakarn sp. n., its distinctive morphological characters, particularly the gonopod structure, clearly support its status as a new species. To provide a clear morphological baseline for comparison, the type species, Enghoffosoma spinipleurum (Carl, 1941), from Myanmar, originally described as Sundanina spinipleura Carl, 1941, is redescribed and illustrated in detail based on the lectotype. With these additions, the genus Enghoffosoma now comprises 21 valid species, confirming its status as a highly diverse and widespread diplopod lineage in the Indochinese region. An updated identification key to all known species and a distribution map are provided.

[Botany • 2026] Asplenium paucipinnatum (Aspleniaceae) • A New fern Species from southern Thailand, based on morphological and molecular data

Abstract
Asplenium paucipinnatum, a new fern species from Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, is described. Morphologically, it closely resembles A. micantifrons in having short-creeping and radial rhizome steles, 1-pinnate laminae, deeply incised pinnae on the basiscopic margin, and sori arranged in two rows close to the costae. However, A. paucipinnatum is readily distinguished by having fewer lateral pinnae (< 14 pairs), obliquely rhombic pinnae with acute apices and obtuse marginal teeth, contrasting the more numerous pinnae (> 15 pairs), lanceolate pinnae with acuminate apices, and acute teeth in A. micantifrons. Phylogenetic analyses based on multiple plastid DNA regions (atpB, rbcL, rps4, rps4-trnS, trnL, and trnL-F) support A. paucipinnatum as a distinct lineage, forming a sister relationship with a clade containing A. lepturus and A. contiguum. The combination of morphological and molecular evidence supports the recognition of this new taxon. Ecological notes, geographic distribution, and a comparison with related species are also provided.

Description. Asplenium paucipinnatum resembles A. micantifrons (Tuyama) Tuyama ex H.Ohba by its short creeping and radial rhizomes, 1-pinnate laminae, pinnae deeply incised at basiscopic side of margin, and sori borne in 2 rows closely set along to the costa, but the former has lateral pinnae fewer than 14 pairs, pinnae oblique rhombic, pinna apex acute, and marginal teeth obtuse. In contrast, A. micantifrons has lateral pinnae more than 15 pairs, pinnae lanceolate, pinna apex acuminate, and marginal teeth acute.

[Mollusca • 2025] Chamalycaeus aduncus • The First Record of an Operculate Micro Land Snail from the Alycaeinae (Caenogastropoda: Cyclophoridae) in Cambodia

This study reports the first record of the operculate micro land snail from the Alycaeinae, Chamalycaeus aduncus Jirapatrasilp sp. nov., also the first new species of the genus in Cambodia, based on a recent survey in Battambang. This new species is similar to Chamalycaeus excisus (Möllendorff, 1887) and C. excisus sublimus Páll-Gergely et Auffenberg, 2019 from the Philippines, in shell size and shape, and the strongly downwards coiling of R3, but differs in having a shorter R2 without any blunt keel, a round aperture without any incision, and a beak- or hook-like basal edge of the outer peristome.

Abstract
An integrative approach based on morphological characteristics and DNA data from the mitochondrial COI gene has revealed five new species of the pill millipede genus Rhopalomeris Verhoeff, 1906 from Thailand: Rhopalomeris muka Sapparojpattana & Likhitrakarn, sp. nov.R. lentiginosa Sapparojpattana & Likhitrakarn, sp. nov.R. dulcia Sapparojpattana & Likhitrakarn, sp. nov.R. punctata Sapparojpattana & Likhitrakarn, sp. nov., and R. verhoeffi Sapparojpattana & Likhitrakarn, sp. nov. The five new species are distinguishable from their congeners by distinctive color patterns and telopod structure. The interspecific genetic divergences between the new species and other Rhopalomeris species ranged from 7.86 to 13.71%. Intraspecific genetic divergences within these five species ranged from 0 to 4.53%, with the highest divergences found in R. carnifex and R. verhoeffi sp. nov. This is consistent with both the wide distribution range and the significant intraspecific morphological variations observed in these latter two species. Furthermore, the taxonomic scope of R. carnifex in Thailand is reviewed, and intraspecific morphological variations within R. carnifex and R. verhoeffi sp. nov. are discussed. A distribution map, morphological illustrations from SEM, and an updated key to all known Rhopalomeris species are also provided.

Abstract. A newly discovered landlocked shrimp, Caridina maeklongensis, new species, is described from the Mae Klong Basin, western Thailand. The morphology of the new species resembles C. sumatrensis, from which it differs in possessing a shorter rostrum with fewer dorsal teeth, a small number of very large-sized eggs, and a greatly reduced posteromedian projection on the distal end of the telson. The molecular evidence of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene also supports the species status of the newly described species. This is the fifth endemic species of Caridina known from Thailand.

[Mollusca • 2021] Hemiplecta nemorosa • Systematic Review of the Dextral Hemiplecta Albers, 1850 (Eupulmonata: Ariophantidae) from Thailand with Description of A New Species and List of All the Indochinese Species

Abstract
The genus Hemiplecta is a group of large-sized land snails which have long been used as a food resource by Indochinese people. There are five dextral and four sinistral species currently recognized from Thailand. The dextral group is comprised of two previously recorded species (H. humphreysiana and H. distincta), two newly recorded species (H. funerea and H. esculenta), and one new species (Hemiplecta nemorosa sp. nov.) from northern Thailand is being proposed. We reassessed the diagnostic characters of the genitalia, mantle edge, and radula. Specimens were classified into the genus Hemiplecta on the basis of the penial verge and shell lobe, and on the characters of a bulbous gametolytic sac without a gametolytic duct. A complete species list, together with photographs of the name-bearing types or authenticated specimens and the taxonomic status of Hemiplecta s.l. that are known from Indochina including Peninsular Malaysia and Myanmar, is provided for the first time. In total, this species list contains 39 available nominal species names described from this area. Type or authentic specimens can be located for 37 nominal species names, of which 25 are illustrated herein and the other 12 were recently illustrated. However, two available species-level names could not be traced to any type specimens. In addition, lectotypes of H. funerea and H. pluto are designated herein to stabilize the names.

Abstract
Two new earthworm species are described from the Mekong River, Thailand, namely Amynthas septuaginta Bantaowong & Panha, sp. nov. and Metaphire fidelis Bantaowong & Panha, sp. nov. The former is a small Mekong earthworm in the A. aeruginosus species group with two pairs of spermathecal pores in 7/8-8/9. It is mainly distinguished from other Amynthas from the Mekong River by its small size (less than 50 mm), and with no genital markings at the male pore region. The latter is distinguished by having four pairs of spermathecal pores in 5/6-8/9, genital markings paired on xvii, ampulla paddle-shaped, and with diverticulum as a slender tube with a loose loop. Morphological description, taxonomic comments, illustrations, and distribution are provided.

Abstract
The millipede genus Yuennanina Attems, 1936 has been known so far only from Yunnan Province, southwestern China. Currently, it comprises three species: Y. ceratogaster Attems, 1936, Y. aceratogaster Zhang & Li, 1977, and Y. petalolobodes Chang & Zhang, 1989. Herein, we describe Yuennanina sirindhornae sp. nov., from Huai Nam Dang, Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand, representing the first formal record of this genus not only from Thailand, but also from entire Southeast Asia. The new species is characterized by its unique gonopodal solenophore the shape of which resembles a young fern frond with fimbriate edges. A detailed redescription of the type species, Y. ceratogaster, is provided based on a revision of type material. An updated identification key to all four presently known Yuennanina species is also provided.

Abstract
The recognized diversity of Macrobrachium prawns in Thailand has increased recently due to taxono-mic investigation using integrative approaches, i.e. from morphology and DNA barcoding. The freshwater habitats in northeast Thailand such as riparian wetland ecosystems provide diverse ecological conditions that promote adaptive diversification among organisms. The varying condition of the freshwater bodies can support the existence of cryptic species among the aquatic animal fauna, including in prawns of the genus Macrobrachium. Several Macrobrachium species have previously been reported in association with the vast network of tributaries that form the Mekong River basin. Newly described species and unidentified morphospecies have particularly been reported from this area in previous systematic studies, which indicates that the current known diversity of the aquatic fauna is likely to be largely incomplete. In this study, a new species of the genus Macrobrachium from the Songkhram River, one of the Mekong tributaries, is described and named as Macrobrachium debaratae Siriwut, sp. nov. This new species contains several distinct morphological characters from its congeneric and co-existing species group, such as the rostral teeth formula, the size and the shape of second pereiopods, and the tooth present on the cutting edge of the fingers of the chelae of the second pereiopods. Genetic distance analysis among the known Macrobrachium species supported this morphological classification as a new species with an interspecific COI divergence of 13%. The COI phylogenetic tree indicated that M. debaratae Siriwut, sp. nov. was monophyletic and was placed close to M. sirindhorn, a member within the M. pilimanus species group. This study highlights the need for a detailed morphological inspection to examine the variability in the taxonomic characters of Macrobrachium, particularly in the M. pilimanus species group found in mainland Southeast Asia tributaries. Further taxonomic review based on intensive sampling is required to provide a more adequate understanding of the diversity of Macrobrachium in the Mekong basin.

Macrobrachium debaratae Siriwut, sp. nov. 

Etymology.–The specific name “debaratae”derives from “Debaratana”, which means the insignia gem of goddess.The name is given in honor of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn as a token of recognition. Her Royal Highness has been devoted to supporting and kindly participating in several pioneer projects studying Thai biodiversity and conservation led by government and private sectors.

Abstract
A new species of landlocked and geographically restricted freshwater shrimp, Caridina sirindhornae sp. nov., is described from tributaries of the Mekong River in northeastern Thailand. The new species is morphologically similar to C. sumatrensis and C. maeklongensis by sharing characteristics such as a short antennular peduncle, the presence of epipods on the first four pereiopods, similar appendix interna on the male first pleopod, and a prominent subtriangular preanal carina without a spine. However, they can be distinguished by characteristics of the rostrum and egg size. Phylogenetic analyses based on partial sequences of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) genes (540 bp and 1,242 bp, respectively) robustly support the distinctiveness of C. sirindhornae sp. nov. Additionally, the findings show that the new species shares a sister relationship with C. lanceifrons, with a significant 16S rRNA p-distance of 6.74%, remarkably exceeding established species delimitation thresholds within the genus Caridina. This discovery represents the second landlocked Caridina species endemic to the Middle Mekong Basin in Thailand

Etymology.–The specific epithet of the new species is in honor of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on the occasion of her 70th Birthday Anniversary and in recognition of her dedication and significant contributions to scientific and environmental pursuits.

Abstract 
Thailand is located at the crossroads of several biogeographical regions, and boasts a high level of biodiversity, especially among the malacofauna. The most recent checklist of land snail species in Thailand was compiled more than twenty years ago, and so this checklist needs revision and the addition of newly discovered taxa. This study updates the taxonomy and species list of the operculated land snail family Pupinidae from Thailand. This snail family is diverse and abundant, and can be found in various natural habitats in Southeast Asia. Although the taxonomy of some Southeast Asian pupinid genera has been reviewed, studies of Pupina Vignard, 1829, which contains the highest number of species, and a lesser-known genus Pupinella Gray, 1850 are still lacking. Herein we present an annotated checklist with an up-to-date systematic framework of the Pupinidae in Thailand based on both field investigations and literature surveys, and include the taxonomic treatment of all Pupina and Pupinella species from mainland Southeast Asia.
This annotated checklist contains 30 nominal species and two subspecies from seven genera currently known to occur in Thailand. We describe two species of Pseudopomatias (Pseudopomatias doiangkhangensis Jirapatrasilp, sp. nov. and P. pallgergelyi Jirapatrasilp, sp. nov.), five species and one subspecies of Pupina (Pupina bensoni Jirapatrasilp, sp. nov., P. bilabiata Jirapatrasilp, sp. nov.P. godwinausteni Jirapatrasilp, sp. nov., P. latisulci Jirapatrasilp, sp. nov., P. stoliczkai Jirapatrasilp, sp. nov., and P. dorri isanensis Jirapatrasilp, ssp. nov.) as new to science. New records of Coptocheilus sumatranus, Pupinella mansuyi, and Rhaphaulus tonkinensis are also reported from Thailand. The mainland Southeast Asian Pupina species are classified into three species groups (Pupina artata group, Pupina arula group, and Pupina aureola group) based on the distinction of shell teeth and canals, and operculum. Three species formerly in Pupina from Vietnam are allocated to Pupinella (P. illustris comb. nov.P. sonlaensis comb. nov., and P. thaitranbaii comb. nov.) due to the presence of a funnel-like anterior canal.
