[Crustacea • 2026] Alpheopsis gorei • A mesophotic alpheid Shrimp (Decapoda: Caridea: Alpheidae) from the western Atlantic

Abstract
A new mesophotic alpheid shrimp, Alpheopsis gorei sp. nov., is described from several offshore localities in the northern and north-eastern Gulf of Mexico off Texas, Louisiana and western Florida. However, the distribution range of the new species extends to the Atlantic coast of Florida, with a previous record from deep-water reefs off Key Largo, under A. trispinosa Stimpson, 1860. The presently known bathymetric range of A. gorei sp. nov. is 42.1-126.2 m and the species appears to be free-living, mainly among coralline nodules and in crevices of deep coral rubble. The new species is morphologically closest to the eastern Altantic A. africana Holthuis, 1952 and A. azorica Anker, Poddoubtchenko & d’Udekem d’Acoz, 2005, the eastern Pacific A. equidactylus Lockington, 1877, and the Indo-West Pacific A. trispinosa, A. garricki Yaldwyn, 1971 and A. keijii Anker, 2007, differing from each of them by at least two morphological characters.

Etymology: The new species is named after the decapod taxonomist, marine ecologist and biogeographer, Dr. Richard H. Gore, who first reported it from Florida (Gore, 1981, as A. trispinosus).

[Crustacea • 2026] Alpheus madhusoodanai • A New Species of Mangrove associated Snapping Shrimp of Genus Alpheus Fabricius, 1798 (Decapoda: Caridea: Alpheidae) from southwest coast of India

Abstract
The present account describes a new species of alpheid shrimp, Alpheus madhusoodanai sp. nov., belonging to the brevirostris group, collected from the Cochin estuary, the south west coast of India. This represents the first species of alpheid shrimps described from the estuary. The morphological and molecular characteristics of the new species are compared with those of its closely related congeners. The newly described species is separated from its morphological congener A. rapax, by its wider major chela and longer merus of the first cheliped. Molecular data also confirmed the delimitation of A. rapax with A. madhusoodanai sp. nov. Habitat and distribution details are also discussed, highlighting the potential for further taxonomic exploration in the Cochin estuary and the importance in uncovering its hidden biodiversity.

[Crustacea • 2024] Alpheus cangiopalus • A New mud-dwelling Species of the Genus Alpheus Fabricius, 1798 (Decapoda: Alpheidae) from anoxic mangrove swamps of South Vietnam

ABSTRACT
 The article describes a new species of the genus Alpheus Fabricius, 1798 (Decapoda: Caridea: Alpheidae), referring to the “Alpheus malabaricus” species complex, which is characterized by unusually long and thin fingers of minor cheliped (pereiopod I). Alpheus cangiopalus sp. n. was found to live exclusively in highly specific shallow water muddy lagoons located in deep anoxic mangrove swamps of the Cần Giờ Mangrove Biosphere Reserve in South Vietnam. Detailed morphological comparison with Alpheus malabaricus (Fabricius, 1775) and other taxa earlier synonymized with the former species are provided. The trophic position of the new species was evaluated based on analysis of δ15N/δ13C stable isotopes, and a discussion on other ecological features of the species is also represented in the article.

ETYMOLOGY. The species name, cangiopalus, was given after Cần Giờ Mangrove Biosphere Reserve; and the habitat of the new species, “palus” (Latin.) means “swamp”. The species epithet can be translated as “living in the swamps of Can Gio”.

Abstract
A new, brightly coloured and morphologically distinctive species of the alpheid genus Alpheus Fabricius, 1798 is described based on a single female specimen collected in shallow waters of Masirah Island, Oman. Alpheus sarapis sp. nov. appears to be morphologically somewhat intermediate between the A. leviusculus Dana, 1852, A. edwardsii (Audouin, 1826) and A. paracrinitus Miers, 1881 species groups, although the presence of slight sinuses on the major chela palm suggests that it may be a derived member of either of the former two groups.

[Crustacea • 2020] Alpheus samudra • A New Species of Alpheus (Decapoda: Alpheidae) from the Arabian Sea, Kerala, India

Abstract
A new species of Alpheus, A. samudra nov. sp., is described from the bycatch of trawlers operating between 275–375 m depth on the Quilon Bank (Kerala, India). The new species belongs to the brevirostris group, but can be easily distinguished from all but one species, by the extremely laterally compressed major cheliped. Alpheus samudra nov. sp. is very similar to A. leptocheles Banner & Banner, 1975 in the form of the major cheliped, but the proportions of the fingers to the palm and the shape of the fingers easily separate both species.

[Crustacea • 2023] Automate arturi • A New Species of Automate (Decapoda: Alpheidae) from the Persian Gulf

Abstract
During 2019, two specimens belonging to a new species of the alpheid shrimp genus Automate De Man, 1888 were collected from two islands in the northern part of the Persian Gulf. The new species is a member of the A. hayashii group which hitherto only comprised two species. However, the new species Automate arturi can be separated from them by several morphological features: a shorter rostrum with rounded tip, a shorter stylocerite barely extending beyond the first antennular article, the scaphocerite not reaching to the end of the second antennular article, the third maxilliped coxa with a subtriangular-shaped lateral plate, the ischia of the first pereiopods (chelipeds) dorsally armed with spiniform setae and ventrally with a small tubercle, and the ischia of the walking pereiopods armed with a single ventrolateral spiniform seta.

Abstract
A new shallow-water species of the alpheid shrimp genus Alpheus Fabricius, 1798 is described based on five specimens from Maceió, Alagoas, northeastern Brazil. Alpheus schubarti sp. nov., belongs to the A. paracrinitus Miers, 1881 species complex and is most closely related to the eastern Pacific A. rostratus Kim & Abele, 1988, from which it can be separated by several morphological differences and the colour pattern of the major and minor chelae.

[Crustacea • 2024] New Species and Records of the symbiotic Shrimp Genus Leptalpheus Williams, 1965, with Notes on Fenneralpheus Felder & Manning, 1986 (Decapoda: Alpheidae), and preliminary Molecular Analysis of Phylogenetic Relationships

Abstract
The shrimp genera Leptalpheus Williams, 1965 and Fenneralpheus Felder & Manning, 1986 are composed entirely of symbiotic species that co-inhabit burrows of infaunal macrocrustaceans. We report extensive collections of these genera from western Atlantic, eastern Pacific and Indo-West Pacific regions. Integrative taxonomy methods, including morphological comparisons and analysis of three mitochondrial genetic markers, are used to test species hypotheses and evolutionary relationships among members of these genera. Our molecular analysis failed to recover Leptalpheus or Fenneralpheus as monophyletic groups. Our results strongly supported the monophyly of three clades composed of species of Leptalpheus, loosely corresponding to previously proposed species groups. Three new species closely related to Leptalpheus forceps Williams, 1965, L. marginalis Anker, 2011, and L. mexicanus Ríos & Carvacho, 1983 are described. Leptalpheus ankeri n. sp., from the Caribbean Sea, Atlantic coast of Florida, and Gulf of Mexico, is a polymorphic species that exhibits two major cheliped morphotypes. Leptalpheus sibo n. sp., from the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, is morphologically very similar to L. ankeri n. sp., likely its transisthmian sister species, and shares its cheliped polymorphism. A reassessment of L. forceps concluded that records of this species from the Caribbean Sea and Brazil are not conspecific with L. forceps sensu stricto from the Atlantic coast of the USA and the Gulf of Mexico, and they are herein described as Leptalpheus degravei n. sp. Based on both molecular and morphological evidence, we found Leptalpheus bicristatus Anker, 2011 to be a junior synonym of L. mexicanus and Leptalpheus canterakintzi Anker & Lazarus, 2015 to be a junior synonym of Leptalpheus azuero Anker, 2011. First reports of Leptalpheus axianassae Dworschak & Coelho, 1999 in Texas and Mexico, Leptalpheus denticulatus Anker & Marin, 2009 in the Mariana Islands, Leptalpheus felderi Anker, Vera Caripe & Lira, 2006 and Leptalpheus lirai Vera Caripe, Pereda & Anker, 2021 in the USA, and Leptalpheus pereirai Anker & Vera Caripe, 2016 in Cuba are included.

A new species of Parapleurocrypta Chopra, 1923, a parasitic isopod genus of the family Bopyridae found parasitizing two species of the snapping-shrimp genus Synalpheus Spence Bate, 1888, is described from Brazil. This is the first record of Parapleurocrypta in the Atlantic Ocean, and the first species of bopyrid parasite recorded from the Fernando de Noronha archipelago in northeastern Brazil. Females of Parapleurocrypta duofratres sp. nov. can be distinguished from the other two species of the genus, P. alphei Chopra, 1923 and P. digitata Bourdon, 1976, by the structure of the barbula, the reduced pleopods, the number of dorsolateral bosses, the absence of the frontal lamina (present in P. digitata), and pleomeres with lateral plates (vs. lateral plates absent in P. digitata). Males can be distinguished from those of P. alphei by the number of antennal articles. Variation in the specimens is discussed and ecological and reproductive data are provided. To accommodate the new features of P. duofratres sp. nov., the diagnosis of the genus is expanded. A review of the branchial bopyrids of Synalpheus is included, as well as a discussion of parasitism by members of Parapleurocrypta.

[Crustacea • 2019] Alpheus ramosportoae • A New Western Atlantic Snapping Shrimp of the Alpheus macrocheles group (Caridea: Alpheidae) revealed by Morphological, Molecular and Color Data

Abstract
Alpheus macrocheles (Hailstone, 1835), a species originally described from the northeastern Atlantic, has been reported from Brazil based on material from the north and northeast coasts and Espírito Santo. However, a thorough morphological comparison between Brazilian material reported as A. macrocheles and eastern Atlantic material of A. macrocheles revealed consistent differences, suggesting that the Brazilian specimens belong to an undescribed species. Alpheus ramosportoae sp. nov. is therefore now described based on material from Amapá to Pernambuco, Brazil. Morphological differences between the new species and A. macrocheles s. str. were supported by the clear divergence of 16S rRNA gene sequences (18% of genetic distance), separating the species in two distinct clades. Differences in the color pattern also were observed and illustrated.

[Crustacea • 2021] Potamalpheops kisi • A New Species of the Genus Potamalpheops (Decapoda: Alpheidae) from the intertidal Mangrove Swamps of South Vietnam

ABSTRACT
A new, possibly, infaunal species of the genus Potamalpheops Powell, 1979 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Alpheidae), Potamalpheops kisi sp.n., is described from the intertidal mangrove swamps of the Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve, South Vietnam. The new species clearly belongs the “P. monodi” species group, but can be easily separated from related species (P. pininsulae Bruce et Illife, 1992, P. tigger Yeo et P.K.L. Ng, 1997 and P. johnsoni Anker, 2003) by the length and shape of rostrum, the length and proportions of carpus and palm of pereiopods I and II, as well as some other minor morphological features. All individuals of the new species were pumped out of burrows in anoxic swamp mud, while no individuals were collected using a hand net during extensive sampling in the same habitats, suggesting that the new species inhabits in a burrow system. No evidence of relationship to any host species is available, since individuals of the new species were collected from different burrows and never with syntopic larger burrowing animals. Observations in situ at nighttime revealed that individuals of Potamalpheops kisi sp.n. freely move inside burrows located above the water level, similar to other mangrove semi-terrestrial shrimp Merguia oligodon, which possibly allows surviving in anoxic conditions of swamp soils; such behavior is described for the genus Potamalpheops for the first time.

[Crustacea • 2023] Athanas exilis • A New Species of the alpheid Shrimp Genus Athanas Leach, 1814 (Decapoda: Caridea) from the Sea of Japan

Abstract
A new species of the alpheid shrimp genus Athanas Leach, 1814 is described based on a holotype from Wakasa Bay, Sea of Japan side of Honshu, Japan, at a depth of 90 m. Athanas exilis n. sp. appears close to A. sydnyensis Anker & Ahyong, 2007, but is distinguished from the latter by some morphological features, including the different shape of the telson, the shorter antennular stylocerite, more strongly produced distal lamella of the antennal scaphocerite, and less developed armature of the merus of the major cheliped. Preliminary genetic analysis using the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene was performed to compare interspecific genetic divergence within the genus.

[Crustacea • 2023] Alpheus octocellatus • A New Species of the Alpheus edwardsii Group (Decapoda: Alpheidae) with A distinctive colour pattern from the Indo-West Pacific

Abstract
A new snapping shrimp species of the Alpheus edwardsii (Audouin, 1826) group is described based on two specimens, one male and one female, collected on shallow-water reef flats of the Southern Ari Atoll in the Maldives, with a photographic record from Cebu in the Philippines. Alpheus octocellatus sp. nov. appears to be morphologically closest to A. edwardsii, A. pareuchirus Coutière, 1905, and A. leptochirus Coutière, 1905, but can be distinguished from all of them by a combination of morphological characters, mainly involving the chelipeds, third maxilliped and pleonal sternites. The new species also has a highly diagnostic colour pattern, with four pairs of conspicuous eyespots distributed in a unique and peculiar pattern on the pleon.

Abstract
A new snapping shrimp species of the Alpheus macrocheles (Hailstone, 1835) group is described based on a single adult male specimen collected on an exposed forereef near Magoodhoo Island, Faafu Atoll, Maldives. Alpheus dingabadi sp. nov. is one of several species of the A. macrocheles group characterised by the presence of a stout distoventral tooth on the merus of the third pereiopod, but can be separated from all of them by several morphological features, including the unusually long appendix masculina on the second pleopod, as well as by its conspicuous and highly diagnostic colour pattern.

Abstract
The status of the common intertidal snapping shrimp, Alpheus inopinatus Holthuis & Gottlieb, 1958, is discussed based on newly collected material from Kuwait. Alpheus inopinatus was previously confused with morphologically very similar species in the Alpheus lobidens De Haan, 1849 species complex, formerly identified as A. crassimanus Heller, 1862 and herein tentatively referred to as A. cf. lobidens. The material herein examined strongly supports the validity of A. inopinatus based on several morphological characters, as well as differences in the colour pattern, compared to other members of the A. lobidens complex.

[Crustacea • 2019] Salmoneus venustus • On Three Symbiotic Species of the Alpheid Shrimp Genus Salmoneus Holthuis, 1955 (Malacostraca: Decapoda: Caridea) from the Indo-West Pacific, including One New to Science

Abstract
Three species of the alpheid shrimp genus Salmoneus Holthuis, 1955 associated with burrows of other decapod crustaceans are reported from various Indo-West Pacific localities. Salmoneus venustus sp. nov. is described based on material collected at two distant localities, Nha Trang Bay, southern Vietnam, the type locality of the new species, and the Yiti-Sifah region east of Muscat, northern Oman. Both specimens were collected with the aid of a suction pump applied to burrow entrances or mounds in muddy sand; the holotype was possibly associated with burrows of the callianassid ghost shrimp, Glypturus sp. Salmoneus venustus sp. nov. shares many characteristics with S. latirostris (Coutière, 1897), including the red banding of the pleon, but can be distinguished from S. latirostris and all other species of the genus by a unique combination of morphological characters. The large-sized Salmoneus brucei Komai, 2009 is reported from Sumba, central Indonesia, representing a significant southward extension of the species’ previously known distribution range and the first record since its original description. The callianassid ghost shrimp Lepidophthalmus cf. rosae (Nobili, 1904) is recorded as a new host of S. brucei. Finally, Salmoneus colinorum De Grave, 2004, associated with burrows of larger snapping shrimps from the Alpheus malabaricus Fabricius, 1798 species complex, is reported for the first time from Madang, Papua New Guinea, representing an eastward extension of the species’ previously known distribution range.

Salmoneus venustus sp. nov.

Etymology. The new species’ name is the Latin adjective venustus, for graceful or attractive, alluding to the pretty reddish colouration of the new species (contrasting to many bland, rather whitish or pale-yellowish species in the genus Salmoneus).
