[Botany • 2026] Tweeddalea capsiciformis (Araceae: Schismatoglottideae) • Unveiling the Fifteenth Species of Tweeddalea from Indonesian Borneo

Abstract
A new species of the genus Tweeddalea (Araceae), Tweeddalea capsiciformis, is described and illustrated from West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. This species increases the number of described species in the genus to fifteen. The discovery of T. capsiciformis not only extends the known distribution range of the genus but also highlights the rich yet still insufficiently explored diversity of Araceae in Borneo.

 Etymology. The specific epithet capsiciformis refers to the chili-like shape of the spathe, which resembles the fruit of Capsicum L. (Solanaceae).

[Botany • 2026] Dicliptera pakhalica (Acanthaceae: Justiciinae) • A New Species from Telangana, India

Abstract
Dicliptera pakhalica (Acanthaceae) is described here as a new species from Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary, Mahabubabad District, Telangana, India. The species is closely related to D. parvibracteata, sharing a similar inflorescence structure and small bracts. However, it differs in several key morphological characters, including the presence of hairs on the stem, unkeeled secondary and tertiary bracts, the absence of glandular hairs on the calyx, corolla, and capsules, and echinate seeds. A detailed morphological description, notes on distribution and habitat, and photographic illustrations are provided to support the identification of this new species and stimulate further study.

Diagnosis. Dicliptera pakhalica is morphologically similar to D. parvibracteata in its inflorescence architecture and the presence of small-sized bracts. However, it differs in several key diagnostic characters, including secondary and tertiary bracts that are eglandular and not keeled (vs. prominently keeled and bearing glandular hairs in D. parvibracteata); calyx, corolla, and capsules uniformly eglandular (vs. sparsely to densely covered with a mixture of glandular and simple hairs); capsule obovoid (vs. ellipsoid); and seeds echinate (vs. tuberculate) (Table 1).

Etymology. The specific epithet pakhalica refers to the type locality the Pakhal Lake, a famous man-made water body dating to the Kakatiya rule in Telangana state, which was later declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary.

[Botany • 2025] Blakea graciliflora (Melastomataceae: Pyxidantheae) • A New Species from the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia

Abstract
Blakea graciliflora, a new species of Melastomataceae from the western slopes of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia, is described and illustrated, along with comments on its etymology, distribution, phenology, conservation status, and taxonomic affinities. Blakea graciliflora is a species readily distinguished by its obovate to obovate-elliptic leaf blades with acuminate apices, abaxial leaf surfaces that are densely covered with tiny lepidote trichomes, basally fused outer floral bracteoles free inner floral bracteoles, both pairs of which are equal to shorter than calyx lobes, isomorphic stamens that form a complete ring around the style, and anther connectives that are dorso-basally prolonged into a triangular spur. The new species is endemic to a relatively small area with an important anthropogenic influence, so it is preliminarily categorized as Endangered (EN) according to the IUCN Red List. The discovery of this new species underscores the state of the Andean forests in this region and the importance of their exploration and conservation.

Abstract
Morphological studies of Rotala revealed a new species, Rotala konkanensis, from low-level ferricretes of the Konkan region of Maharashtra, India. The new species is described and illustrated here. A taxonomic key and morphological comparison table of new species with closely related taxa, geographical distribution and images are provided.

[Botany • 2025] Glossoloma parvulina (Gesneriaceae) • Exploratory Research in Colombia’s Cordillera Oriental reveals A New Glossoloma with fimbriate calyx margins

Abstract
A new species of Glossoloma is described from the premontane forests of the Cordillera Oriental in the eastern Andean slopes of Colombia. Glossoloma parvulina Solano-C, D. Ruiz-Mol. & J.L. Clark is differentiated from other congeners by the presence of minute fimbriate calyx margins. The new species is compared with all other currently known species of Glossoloma with fimbriate calyx margins, most of which also share an unbranched subshrub habit. Based on IUCN guidelines, a preliminary conservation status is assigned as Endangered (EN).

[Botany • 2022] Grindelia peregrinensis (Asteraceae: Astereae) • A New Species from southern Buenos Aires Province, Argentina

Abstract
The genus Grindelia includes ca. 70 species and has a disjunct distribution in North America and central-south South America. Based on field surveys, types, additional specimens, and a literature review, we describe a new species, Grindelia peregrinensis, from Sierra La Peregrina and Sierra La Vigilancia in the orographic Tandilia System of southern Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Data regarding its geographic distribution, phenology, habitat, conservation, and morphological affinities with related species are provided.

[Botany • 2025] Trichodrymona isophylla (Gesneriaceae) • A New Species from the Colombian Andes

Abstract
Recent field expeditions to the Andes and herbarium research have led to the discovery of a new species of Trichodrymonia (Gesneriaceae). Trichodrymonia isophylla J.L. Clark & Clavijo is widely distributed in the Cordilleras Central and Occidental in the Colombian Andes. This new species is distinguished from its congeners by isophyllous leaves that are evenly spaced on erect shoots, scale-like indumentum on stems and petioles, and a prominent submarginal collecting vein visible on both leaf surfaces. Following IUCN guidelines, a preliminary conservation assessment indicated that this species as Least Concern (LC).

Abstract
The new species Matisia boyacensis (Malvaceae) is described and illustrated. The species is assigned to the Calyculatae section of the genus Matisia and is compared to closely related species. Matisia boyacensis is only known from premontane forest matrices and pastures of Boyacá department, in the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia.

Etymology. The epithet boyacensis honors the Boyacá Department, within which its sole currently known locality occurs. This department is home to well preserved montane forest remnants and exhibits high biodiversity. Additionally, the name pays tribute to the local inhabitants of this region.

[Botany • 2024] Lorostemon roseoviridis (Clusiaceae) • A New Species from the eastern Amazonia

Abstract
During the review of the Brazilian species of Lorostemon (Clusiaceae), we verified that some specimens previously reported as L. bombaciflorus Ducke for South Guyana and the Brazilian Eastern Amazonia belong to a species still unknown to science. Here, we provide a description, taxonomic comments, illustrations, and a distribution map of Lorostemon roseoviridis Fer.-Silva & L.Marinho, a new species from eastern Amazonia.

Etymology. The epithet refers to the predominant colors found in the flowers and derives from the Latin roseus (pink) and viridis (green). Ducke (1935) published the first species name in the genus as "L. bombaciflorum", indicating that Lorostemon would be neuter, but Art. 62.2 (a) of the ICN (Turland et al., 2018) states that compound generic names ending in -stemon are masculine.

Abstract
Field observations and specimens from herbaria revealed the existence of a new species of the genus Phyllanthus, restricted to the municipality of Santa Bárbara, André do Mato Dentro, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Characteristics such as the subsessile petiole and the size and morphology of the leaves, in addition to the pistallate flowers with 6 sepals, stipules, styles, and stigmas were important to recognize Phyllanthus gandarelensis as a new taxon. Description, illustrations, distribution and habitat, phenology, preliminary conservation status as Critically Endangered, and comments on its morphology, as well as a comparative table with its congener species are presented.

[Botany • 2024] Siphoneugena carolynae (Myrtaceae) • A New Species from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Abstract
This study describes Siphoneugena carolynae (Myrtaceae), a new species from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The species inhabits inselberg forests and differs from all other species of Siphoneugena by the following exclusive combination of morphological characters: relatively long petioles, leaf blades chartaceous with midvein canaliculate adaxially, inflorescences in racemes with a markedly compressed and indistinguishable main axis, hypanthium markedly constricted above the ovary, calyx calyptrate, ovaries with two locules, each with four ovules, and cotyledons densely covered with foveolate glands. We herein provide taxonomic notes, morphological plates (derived from both fresh and dried material), and a distribution map. Regarding the conservation status, the new species is preliminarily assessed as Data Deficient (DD), but comments on population size and possible threats to the habitat are presented.

[Botany • 2024] Magnolia corquinensis (Magnoliaceae: sect. Talauma) • A New Species from Antioquia Province, Colombia

Abstract
A new species of Magnolia (Magnoliaceae) from Antioquia Province in Colombia is described and illustrated. Magnolia amalfiensis, known only from two small populations at elevations of 1,700–2,400 m in the Central Cordillera, is distinguished in having a gynoecium covered by sericeous pubescence, except at the apex of the stigmas. This species is similar to Magnolia henaoi, but the two species differ in number of bracts, size and number of petals, and number of carpels per fruit. Magnolia amalfiensis is placed in Section Talauma based on its stipules, which are adnate along the full length of the petiole, and its stamens, which lack a long filiform connective appendage. This new species increases the total number of Magnolia species from Colombia to 42, of which 15 occur in Antioquia Province. Information about the ecology and conservation status of the new species and its risk category, according to IUCN criteria, is also provided.

[Botany • 2024] Aeschynanthus maoi (Gesneriaceae) • A New Species from Arunachal Pradesh, India

Abstract
Aeschynanthus maoi, a new species of Gesneriaceae from Lower Dibang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh, India, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to A. wardii and A. bracteatus, but differs from the former by its small (3–5 mm long) boat-like bracts, narrowly ovate or triangular calyx lobes, 1–8 flowered inflorescences, and turbinate staminodes. It differs from the latter by caducous green bracts, short peduncles (0.2–0.8 cm long), and narrowly ovate or triangular green calyx lobes. A detailed description of the new species with color photographs and a comparison to similar species are provided. The new species is evaluated for risk of extinction and provisionally assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) according to IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

[Botany • 2024] Drymonia cutervoensis (Gesneriaceae) • A New Species from the Cutervo National Park in northern Peru

Abstract
A new species of Drymonia from Northern Peru was recently discovered during exploratory field work and is described here. Drymonia cutervoensis J.L.Clark, R.Rojas & Rob.Fern. is differentiated from all other congeners by its terrestrial unbranched shrub habit and laterally compressed corolla tubes. Drymonia cutervoensis is featured with field images and compared with other members of Drymonia that share laterally compressed corolla tubes. Based on IUCN guidelines, a preliminary conservation status of Endangered (EN) is assessed for Drymonia cutervoensis.

Abstract
A new lithophytic species of Gesneria was discovered during a recent research expedition to the Dominican Republic. Gesneria clasei J.L.Clark is a locally endemic species known from a single population in the Sierra de Bahoruco in the southwestern province of Barahona in the Dominican Republic. Images and a discussion are provided to differentiate Gesneria clasei from congeners that share tubular red corollas. Based on IUCN guidelines, a preliminary conservation status of Critically Endangered (CR) is assigned to G. clasei.

Gesneria clasei J.L.Clark, sp. nov.

Diagnosis.—Differs from all other Gesneria taxa by the presence of uniformly red tubular corollas, ribbed floral tubes, narrow calyx lobes that are nearly as long as the corolla tube, and a lithophytic subshrub habit.

Etymology.—The specific epithet clasei honors Teodoro Clase (Fig. 1F), a Dominican botanist from the Jardín Botánico Nacional “Dr. Rafael M. Moscoso” (JBSD) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Clase’s heroic efforts have facilitated and promoted plant biodiversity studies in the Dominican Republic, including the discovery of the species here. Clase is also an active plant collector, currently one of the most extensive for Hispaniola (more than 14,000 field collections throughout Haiti and the Dominican Republic).
