A new species of sisoroid catfish in the genus Akysis is described from the Mae Klong drainage in western Thailand, marking the first record of this genus there. Akysis patrator, new species, can be distinguished from congeners in having the adipose fin preceded by a long, low ridge contacting the base of the last dorsal-fin ray and a colour pattern of a light brown body with a chocolate brown reticulate pattern on its sides.

[Ichthyology • 2021] Chiloglanis msirii • A New Species of African Suckermouth Catfish (Siluriformes: Mochokidae) from the Upper Congo Basin

A detailed examination of recently collected specimens of Chiloglanis from the Fungwe and Mwanza rivers and those collected during previous surveys of the Lukuga basin revealed the existence of a new species of African suckermouth catfish in the Upper Congo basin. The new species, herein described as Chiloglanis msirii, is readily distinguished from its congeners in the Congo basin by: the lack of a mid-ventral cleft on the oral disc; the possession of a single row of widely spaced mandibular teeth; and the possession of a forked caudal fin. Outside the Congo basin, the new species closely resembles C. swierstrai from which it is however readily distinguished by having a lower number of total vertebrae and a thicker caudal peduncle. Based on the examined specimens, there was no apparent evidence of sexual dimorphism in shape and size of the fins, body ornamentation, or tuberculation of the skin. This description increases the number of known species of suckermouth catfishes in the Upemba National Park (UNP) to four (C. lufirae, C. microps, C. pojeri and C. msirii). Further surveys and the use of integrative taxonomic approaches will likely uncover additional undocumented species diversity in this park. There are concerns, however, that some of this diversity might be lost even before it is formally documented, because of the excessive use of ichthyotoxins and the construction of impoundments that cause drowning of the riffles which are critical habitats for rheophilic species, particularly those in the genus Chiloglanis and other specialised groups. The present study highlights and discusses the challenges associated with fish protection in the UNP, with emphasis on the Fungwe and Mwanza rivers.

[Ichthyology • 2020] Typhlachirus lipophthalmus, A Rare Eye-less Sole from Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo (Teleostei: Soleidae)

An example of the eye-less sole, Typhlachirus lipophthalmus, was collected from a tidal section of the Sadong River in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, in January 2018. It is apparently the second known record of this species since its description in 1882. A description based on selected meristic and morphometric data gathered from the specimen, supported by radiographs and photographs of it, as well as notes on its capture and habitat, are presented.

Distribution. Typhlachirus lipophthalmus is presently known only from Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, having been recorded from the lower reaches of Sungai Sadong of the Sadong River basin (Tan & Grinang, 2018 and present study) and from Sungai Kuap of the Sarawak River basin (Atack, 2006). The range of Typhlachirus lipophthalmus is expected to be wider, pending further surveys of estuarine habitats in Borneo. See Figure 7 for the distribution of all three species of Typhlachirus.

[Ichthyology • 2019] Garra surinbinnani • A New Species of Labeonine (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) from the Mae Khlong basin of Thailand

Garra surinbinnani, new species, is described from the Mae Khlong basin of western Thailand. It is the fourth species of Garra known from the basin and occurs syntopically with the other three species in fast-flowing rocky riffles. Within the Mae Khlong basin, it is most similar to G. fuliginosa from which it differs most obviously in having a bilobed (vs. trilobed) proboscis on the snout and 12-13 (vs. 15-16) circumpeduncular scales. Garra surinbinnani is readily distinguished from other species of Garra with a proboscis in Southeast Asia – G. notata and G. salweenica in the Salween basin, and G. cyrano in the Mekong basin – in having 12-13 (vs. 15-16) circumpeduncular scales, and from all species of Garra outside Southeast Asia with a bilobed proboscis and 12-13 circumpeduncular scales by having 28-31 (vs. 34 or more) lateral-line scales.

Garra surinbinnani, new species

Diagnosis. Garra surinbinnani is distinguished from all other species of Garra by the combination of a more-or-less rectangular (viewed dorsally), bilobed proboscis on the snout (Fig. 2), a large transverse lobe separated from the rest of the snout by a deep transverse groove, 12-13 circumpeduncular scales, and 28-31 lateral-line scales.

Etymology. The specific name surinbinnani, a noun in genitive case, is the concatenated form of the chosen appellation of our friend and colleague, Mr. Amphol Tapanapunnitikul. Surin Binnan (สุริน บินนาน) was director of the Foundation of Western Forest Complex Conservation and a leading figure in efforts to protect natural areas in Thailand.

Distribution and habitat. Garra surinbinnani appears to be endemic to the Mae Khlong basin in western Thailand (Fig. 6). It occurs sympatrically with G. fuliginosa in fast rocky riffles in streams throughout the basin and with G. cambodgiensis and G. fluviatilis in the Khwae Noi, the large western tributary of the Mae Khlong basin.

[Ichthyology • 2019] Marcusenius wamuinii • A New Elephantfish (Teleostei: Mormyridae) from the Mangroves National Park, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Abstract
Marcusenius wamuinii, a new large-scaled Marcusenius species, is described from the Mangroves National Park (MNP), a protected area situated at the mouth of the Lower Congo basin and its surroundings in the DR Congo. It can be distinguished from all its congeners based on the following unique combination of characteristics: 8 circumpeduncular scales, 27-31 anal-fin rays, 22-25 dorsal-fin rays, 19-22 scales between dorsal and anal fin, 46-53 lateral line scales, and a slender caudal peduncle (depth 4.4-5.9 % SL). Its status as a distinct species is additionally confirmed by genetic data from the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. This is the first new fish species discovered in the MNP, highlighting the importance of freshwater conservation in this area in which the fish fauna is still poorly known.

Marcusenius wamuinii, une nouvelle espèce de Marcusenius à grandes écailles est décrite du Parc Marin des Mangroves (PMM), une zone protégée située dans l'embouchure du Bas Congo et ses environs en RD Congo. Elle se distingue de tous ses congénères sur la base de la combinaison unique des caractères suivants : 8 écailles circumpédonculaires, 27-31 rayons à la nageoire anale, 22-25 rayons à la nageoire dorsale, 19-22 écailles entre les nageoires dorsale et anale, 46-53 écailles en ligne latérale et un pédoncule caudal mince (hauteur 4.4-5.9 % SL). Son statut d'espèce distincte est également confirmé à base de résultats génétiques sur le gène mitochondrial cytochrome b. Ceci est la première nouvelle espèce de poisson découverte dans le PMM, soulignant l'importance de la conservation des eaux douces dans cette Zone, dont la faune de poissons est encore largement méconnue.

[Ichthyology • 2019] Tanichthys kuehnei • A New Species (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) from Central Vietnam

Tanichthys kuehnei, new species, is described from a stream in the Bach Ma Mountains in Hue Province in Central Vietnam. The new species differs from its congeners by having more branched rays in anal fin (9 1/2 vs. 7-8 1/2 in T. micagemmae and 8 1/2 in T. albonubes and T. thacbaensis). Morphological and genetic characters suggest it to be closer related to T. micagemmae, the only other species of Tanichthys known from Central Vietnam. Tanichthys kuehnei differs from T. micagemmae by having a white anal-fin margin (vs. red).

[Ichthyology • 2018] Monopterus rongsaw • A New Species of Hypogean Swamp Eel (Synbranchiformes: Synbranchidae) from the Khasi Hills in Northeast India

 A new species of hypogean swamp eel, Monopterus rongsaw, is described from the Khasi Hills in Meghalaya, India. It was discovered while digging rock-strewn and moist soil close to a small stream during attempts to find caecilians. The new species differs from other synbranchids by the combination of absence of skin pigmentation, the eyes being tiny and covered by skin, and a count of 92 precaudal and 69 caudal vertebrae.

Hypostomus latirostris was originally described by Regan (1904) from “River Jungada [= rio Jangada], Matto Grosso and Goyaz”; however, the species is rarely mentioned in taxonomic works on Hypostomus from Paraguay. Herein, the two syntypes of Plecostomus latirostris were examined showing critical differences between them. After the analysis of a large sample of recently collected specimens from the upper rio Paraguay basin we concluded that the two syntypes from the rio Jangada indeed belong to different species. Hypostomus latirostris is redescribed and a lectotype is designated herein. The other syntype (now a paralectotype of H. latirostris) is designated as paratype of Hypostomus renestoi, new speciesHypostomus renestoi can be differentiated from H. latirostris by having robust teeth (vs. slender); by having 28-77 teeth on the premaxilla (vs. 79-111) and 25-64 on the dentary (vs. 79-109); by having small and more conspicuous dark spots (vs. larger and less conspicuous dark spots); by having dorsal and mid-dorsal series of plates with moderate hypertrophied odontodes (vs. lacking hypertrophied odontodes on lateral series of plates); and usually by attaining a smaller size.

Distribution and habitat. Hypostomus latirostris is known from several localities along the rio Cuiabá basin (Fig. 4). Regan (1904) pointed out the rio Jangada as the type locality. Records of H. latirostris were made in all the extension of the rio Manso and also in the rio Cuiabá basin. The rio Manso and the rio Cuiabazinho are the formers to rio Cuiabá. The rio Cuiabá basin is mainly located upstream the Brazilian Pantanal. Most specimens were collected before and after the construction of the Manso Reservoir. The rio Cuiabá basin has clear water, with rocky and sandy substrate, and variable remnant riparian vegetation. The individuals were collected whether in rapids or in lentic environments. Juveniles were usually collected in oxbow lakes in the rio Cuiabá basin and streams. Specimens of H. latirostris were collected co-occurring with H. boulengeri, H. cochliodon, H. khimaera, H. latifrons, H. piratatu, H. regani, H. ternetzi, H. peckoltoides, and H. mutucae.

Diagnosis. Hypostomus renestoi is distinguished from the species of the H. cochliodon group (sensu Zawadzki & Hollanda Carvalho, 2015) by having viliform teeth and angle between dentaries usually larger than 80° (vs. spoon- or shovel-shaped teeth and angle between dentaries about 80°); from H. affinis, H. ancistroides, H. arecuta, H. argus, H. aspilogaster, H. borellii, H. boulengeri, H. carinatus, H. careopinnatus, H. carvalhoi, H. commersoni, H. crassicauda, H. delimai, H. derbyi, H. dlouhyi, H. faveolus, H. formosae, H. hemiurus, H. interruptus, H. itacua, H. laplatae, H. niceforoi, H. nigrolineatus, H. nigropunctatus, H. paucimaculatus, H. piratatu, H. plecostomus, H. pantherinus, H. punctatus, H. pusarum, H. scabryceps, H. seminudus, H. subcarinatus, H. tapijara, H. variostictus, H. velhochico, and H. watwata by lacking keels on median lateral series of plates (vs. having moderate or strong keels along lateral series of plates); from H. alatus, H. albopunctatus, H. chrysostiktos, H. fluviatilis, H. francisci, H. margaritifer, H. luteomaculatus, H. lexi, H. luteus, H. margaritifer, H. meleagris, H. microstomus, H. multidens, H. myersi, H. niger, H. regani, H. roseopunctatus, H. scaphyceps, H. sertanejo, H. strigaticeps, H. tietensis, and H. variipictus by having dark spots on a clearer background (vs. pale spots or vermiculations on a darker background); from H. asperatus, H. brevicauda, H. goyazensis, H. heraldoi, H. hermanni, H. iheringii, H. kuarup, H. lima, H. luetkeni, H. macrops, H. mutucae, H. nigromaculatus, H. paulinus, H. topavae, H. unae, and H. wuchereri by having dorsal and mid-dorsal series of plates with moderate hypertrophied odontodes (vs. lacking conspicuous odontodes on lateral series of plates); from H. angipinnatus, H. agna, H. isbrueckeri, H. laplatae, H. latifrons, H. nigropunctatus, H. uruguayensis, and H. vaillanti by having one plate bordering supraoccipital (vs. three to seven); from H. bolivianus, H. fonchii, and H. perdido by having bicuspid teeth (vs. unicuspid teeth); from H. peckoltoides by having dark large spots on body and fins (vs. wide dark transverse bars on body and bands on fins); from H. ternetzi by having ventral unbranched caudal-fin ray length smaller to equal to predorsal length (vs. unbranched caudal-fin ray length clearly larger than predorsal length); from H. latirostris by having: robust teeth (vs. slender); by having 28-77 teeth on premaxilla (vs. 79-111) and 25-64 on dentary (vs. 79-109); small and more conspicuous dark spots (vs. larger and less conspicuous dark spots); dorsal and mid-dorsal series of plates with moderate hypertrophied odontodes (vs. lacking conspicuous odontodes on lateral series of plates); and usually by attaining a smaller size. 

Ecological notes. Sometimes very small black dots due to encysted metacercariae on trunk, belly and fins (Figs. 5, 7). 

Distribution and habitat. Hypostomus renestoi was mainly collected in the rio Cuiabá and its tributaries (Fig. 8). As a small- to medium-sized species, the specimens were collected in small- and medium-sized streams, with ranges from 1.5 to 6 m wide, as well as records were also from the margins or shallow stretches of the larger Cuiabá and Manso rivers. The area sampled presented varied vegetation of degraded areas by mining practices, recreation, pasture, agriculture, and often a small riparian vegetation. The streams usually had as substrate sand, clay, gravel and rocks. Several specimens were collected in rapids on mouth of the tributaries to the rio Manso. With the construction of Manso Reservoir the lower stretches of some tributaries of the rio Manso are nowadays flooded by the lake reservoir. 

Etymology. The specific epithet renestoi is in honor of the professor Erasmo Renesto, Brazilian ichthyologist, due to his contributions to the genetic field of the Neotropical fishes.

[Ichthyology • 2017] Vanmanenia orcicampus • A New Species of Loach (Teleostei: Gastromyzontidae) from the Plain of Jars, central Laos

 Vanmanenia orcicampus, new species, is described from the Nam Ngum drainage on the Plain of Jars, central Laos. It is distinguished from its congeners by its colour pattern consisting of a midlateral row of six blotches, a middorsal row of six saddles and vermiculations between the rows of blotches and saddles and on the rest of the flank. Furthermore, it has a slender caudal peduncle (depth 1.5 times in its length, 2.5 times in body depth) and 12-14 branched pectoral-fin rays.

[Ichthyology • 2011] Fangfangia spinicleithralis • A New Genus and Species of Miniature Cyprinid Fish (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) from the Peat Swamp Forests of Borneo

Fangfangia spinicleithralis, new genus, new species, is described from peat swamp forest habitats in Kalimantan Tengah, Borneo, Indonesia. It differs from all other cyprinids in having the anteroventral tip of the left cleithrum projecting into a strong anteriorly directed spine and a pointed posteriorly directed spine at the posteroventral aspect of each cleithrum. In addition, it can be diagnosed by the following characters: the base of the dorsal hemitrich of the first pectoral-fin ray with serrated margin, multicuspid pharyngeal teeth, ventrally directed lateral processes on vertebra 1, the high number of procurrent caudal-fin rays (14-18 dorsally, 11-15 ventrally), absence of scales with the exception of six or seven tubular lateral line ossicles, and the greatly elongated middle radials in the anal fin, which may reach half the length of proximal radials.


Fangfangia, new genus

Etymology. The new genus is named after the late Fang Fang, a passionate and productive cypriniform researcher, who left us too early, honouring her contribution to danionine taxonomy and phylogeny. Gender feminine.

Distribution. Fangfangia spinicleithralis is presently known only from the type locality in Sebangau peat swamp forest, Kalimantan Tengah, Borneo, Indonesia.

Etymology. The species name spinicleithralis, an adjective, is derived from the Latin words spina, thorn, and cleithralis, belonging to the cleithrum (the main element of the dermal shoulder girdle). It refers to the unique pointed anterior and posterior spines on the cleithrum of this species.

[Ichthyology • 2014] Nothobranchius chochamandai • A New Species of Annual Killifish (Cyprinodontiformes: Nothobranchiidae) from the Luapula drainage, Democratic Republic of Congo


Nothobranchius chochamandai Nagy, 2014

Nothobranchius chochamandai, new species, is described from ephemeral swamps of the Kinikabwimba River, tributary of Lufutishi River in the lower Luapula drainage in Katanga province of Democratic Republic of Congo. It is identified as belonging to the N. brieni species-group of which it shows the diagnostic characters in males: proximal portion of caudal and anal fins spotted; dorsal fin lacking dark distal margin; head without dark spots and scales without a black posterior margin. Nothobranchius chochamandai is distinguished from all other species of this species-group by the unique combination of the following characters in males: caudal and anal fins with light blue distal margins and without a submarginal band; dorsal fin without a light blue distal margin; postorbital length 56-60 % HL; snout length 16-19 % HL; head width 65-69 % of its depth, and caudal peduncle length 135-142 % of its depth.

[Ichthyology • 2016] Schistura kampucheensis • A New Species of Loach (Teleostei: Nemacheilidae) from Cambodia

Abstract

Schistura kampucheensis, new species, is described from several localities in Cambodia. It is distinguished from all other species of Schistura by a combination of the following characters: 6-11 more or less regular, continuous black bars on body, reaching ventrally usually to level of pectoral fins; no black midlateral stripe; 8 1 /2 branched dorsal-fin rays; 8 + 8 branched caudal-fin rays; 7 pelvic-fin rays; anus situated 1.7-2.5 eye diameters before anal-fin origin; males without suborbital flap; axillary pelvic lobe present. Schistura kampucheensis had earlier been mis-identified as S. pellegrini.








Diagnosis. Schistura kampucheensis is distinguished from all other species of Schistura by the combination of the following characters: 8 1 /2 branched dorsal-fin rays; 8+8 branched caudal-fin rays; 7 pectoral-fin rays, position of anus 1.7-2.5 eye diameter before anal-fin origin, no sexual dimorphism, 6–11 regular black bars, usually not interrupted, no black midlateral stripe, anterior nostril not reaching margin of eye and axillary pelvic lobe present.

Etymology. From Kampuchea, the Khmer name for Cambodia. The name refers to the fact that the species is widespread in Cambodia, but up to now is not known from outside the country. An adjective.

Habitat. The largest stream in which the species was collected measured about 20 m in width, but the species was most abundant in small streams up to 6 m wide with moderate flow and many stones (Fig. 4). Fishes were hiding between the stones.

Distribution. The investigated material originated from tributaries of the rivers Mekong, Tek Chhou and Srae Ambel in the provinces Kampot, Ratanakiri and Kaoh Kong in northern and southern Cambodia (Fig. 5). Rainboth (1996) listed the species from the Tonle San and tributaries. It seems that S. kampucheensis is distributed over a large part of Cambodia, but has up to now not been reported from any other country.

[Ichthyology • 2016] Microglanis nigrolineatus • A New Species (Pseudopimelodidae) from northwestern Argentina

Microglanis nigrolineatus, new species, is described from streams of Bermejo River basin, northwestern Argentina. It is distinguished from all congeners by a combination of characters including a unique coloration pattern: a thin dark line that runs along middle body from vertical line through dorsal-fin origin to end of adipose fin, delimiting two dark-brown areas ending in a dark blotch crossing entire body depth just anterior to caudal-fin origin and dorsal region of head uniformly dark, lacking a paler area on nuchal region. Also, thorn serrae on anterior margin of pectoral-fin spine are short.

Microglanis nigrolineatus, nueva especie, se describe de arroyos de la cuenca del Río Bermejo, Noroeste de Argentina. Esta nueva especie se distingue de los congéneres por una combinación de caracteres que incluyen un patrón de coloración único: una delgada línea oscura que atraviesa longitudinalmente la parte media del cuerpo, que va desde la aleta dorsal hasta el final de la adiposa delimitando dos áreas pardo oscuras que terminan en una mancha negra que atraviesa toda la altura del cuerpo justo anterior a la aleta caudal, y la región dorsal de la cabeza uniformemente oscura, sin un área más clara en la región nucal. Además, los ganchos en el margen anterior de la espina pectoral son cortos.

Liniparhomaloptera macrostoma, new species, is described from Hunan Province, south China. It is distinguished from its congers by having 8 branched dorsal-fin rays, more lateral line scales (82-100), relatively wider mouth and lower lip separated into two parts.
