[Botany • 2024] Disporum chiangdaoense, D. dorsifixerum, D. phuhinrongklaensis & D. scabridum • Taxonomic Revision of Disporum (Colchicaceae) from Thailand including Four New Species

Abstract 
We present a taxonomic revision of the genus Disporum in Thailand based on Thai specimens including descriptions of the genus and species, a key to the species, illustrations and lectotypifications. The dorsifixed anther attachment is a new character for the genus. There is a total of six species in Thailand, including the four new species described here, namely D. chiangdaoenseD. dorsifixerumD. phuhinrongklaensis and D. scabridum, and two well-known species D. calcaratum and D. cantoniense. Anatomical and pollen morphological characters can be used for species diagnoses and they strongly support the morphological recognition of the four new species. New lectotypifications of synonyms are provided for D. wallichii, Uvularia calcarata and U. hamiltoniana.

Distribution — India, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand (Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nan, Lumpang, Loei, Kanchanaburi), Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam, Korea, and Japan.
 Habitat & Ecology — In open areas, along roadsides in pine and oak forests at 1450–1800 m elevation. Flowering: May to July; fruiting: July to December

Distribution — India, China, Tibet, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam Thailand (Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Phayao, Nan, Lamphun, Loei), Malaysia, Indonesia. 
Habitat & Ecology — In open areas or along roadsides of mixed deciduous or evergreen forests (pine forest) at 800– 1600 m elevation. Flowering: June to August; fruiting: July to December.

Disporum chiangdaoense Sarapan & Suwanph., sp. nov. 

Disporum chiangdaoense differs from D. calcaratum in its perianth that is white and green or cream at apex (vs pink and purple in D. calcaratum) and the ridge of the spur is glabrous (vs papillose in D. calcaratum). 

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to Chiangdao Wildlife Sanctuary, Chiang Mai Province, where the type specimens were collected.

 Distribution — Endemic to Thailand (Provinces: Mae Hong Son (Mueang District); Chiang Mai (Chiangdao Wildlife Sanctuary)). 
 Habitat & Ecology — In open areas or along roadsides of evergreen forest at 1200–2000 m elevation. Flowering: June to July; fruiting: August to February.

Disporum dorsifixerum Sarapan & Suwanph., sp. nov. 

 Disporum dorsifixerum has dorsifixed anthers; it differs from D. calcaratum in its flowers which are rotate (vs campanulate in D. calcaratum); the ridge of the spur that lacks papillae (vs papillose in D. calcaratum), and the tepals that are apically green (vs pale pink in D. calcaratum). 

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the dorsifixed anther attachment that is a unique distinguishing character for this species

Distribution — Endemic to Thailand (Lamphun: Doi Khun Tan National Park; Tak: Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary). 
 Habitat & Ecology — In open areas and along roadsides of mixed deciduous and evergreen forests at 1300–1800 m elevation. Flowering: July to August; fruiting: July to December.

Disporum phuhinrongklaensis Sarapan & Chamch., sp. nov.

Disporum phuhinrongklaensis differs from D. calcaratum in its flowers that are rotate and white and green at the apex (vs campanulate and pink or dark purplish red in D. calcaratum); the ridge of the spur is glabrous (vs papillose in D. calcaratum); the filaments and style are white (vs pink or purple in D. calcaratum). 

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park, Phitsanulok province, where the type specimens were collected.

Distribution — Endemic in Thailand (Chiang Mai: Si Lanna National Park, Phitsanulok: Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park). 
 Habitat & Ecology — In open areas or along roadsides of mixed deciduous and evergreen forests at 800–1200 m elevation. Flowering: May to June; fruiting: July to December

Disporum scabridum Sarapan & Hodk., sp. nov. 

Disporum scabridum differs from D. calcaratum in its flowers that are tubulate to campanulate with a deep purple red apex (vs campanulate with pink or pale pink apex in D. calcaratum); the basal tepal and spur are densely scabrous (vs glabrous in D. calcaratum). 

 Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the densely scabrous spur that is characteristic of the species.

Distribution — Endemic to Thailand (Pitsanulok: Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park).
 Habitat & Ecology — In open areas and along roadsides of mix deciduous or evergreen forests at 1000–1800 m elevation. Flowering: June to July; fruiting: July to November.

พืชชนิดใหม่ของโลกในสกุลว่านหัวสืบ (𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑢𝑚) จำนวน 4 ชนิด ที่ค้นพบในครั้งนี้ ได้แก่
1. ว่านหัวสืบเชียงดาว 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘮  𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘥𝘢𝘰𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 Sarapan & Suwanph. พบบริเวณป่าดิบเขา เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าดอยเชียงดาว จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เป็นไม้ล้มลุก สูงได้ถึง 94 ซม. ลำต้นอวบน้ำ สีม่วงแดงเข้มตลอดต้น มีขนสั้นหนาแน่น ใบเดี่ยว เรียงเวียน เกลี้ยง หลอดกลีบดอกด้านนอกสีขาวครีม ด้านในแฉกกลีบดอกและหลอดกลีบดอกสีขาวครีม คำระบุชนิด ‘𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑑𝑎𝑜𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑒’ เป็นภาษาละตินที่หมายถึง เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าดอยเชียวดาวที่เป็นสถานที่เก็บตัวอย่าง  
2. ชมพูจักร 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘮  𝘥𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘹𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘮 Sarapan & Suwanph. พืชถิ่นเดียวพบบริเวณป่าดิบเขา จังหวัดลำพูน  เป็นไม้ล้มลุก สูงได้ถึง 160 ซม. ลำต้นอวบน้ำ สีเขียวตลอดต้น ใบเดี่ยว เรียงเวียน เกลี้ยง หลอดกลีบดอกด้านนอกสีชมพู ด้านในแฉกกลีบดอกและหลอดกลีบดอกสีชมพู คำระบุชนิด ‘𝘥𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘹𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘮’ อธิบายลักษณะการติดของอับเรณู

[Botany • 2023] Piper kerrii, P. phangngaense & P. rugocarpum (Piperaceae) • Three New Species, Two New Records and additional Taxonomic Notes of Piper from Thailand

Abstract
We revised the genus Piper (Piperaceae) for the forthcoming volume of the Flora of Thailand. Three new species, namely P. kerrii, P. phangngaense and P. rugocarpum are described and illustrated. In addition, two records of species new to Thailand, P. laosanum and P. obtusissimum, are presented. New complete taxonomic descriptions of P. crassipes and P. obtusissimum are provided. We also designate lectotypes and epitypes of P. laosanum and P. obtusissimum, respectively. An emended key to species including the new species, new records for Thai Piper species and additional taxonomic notes are provided.

Piper kerrii Suwanph. and Y.Banchong, sp. nov.

Etymology This species is named in honour of A. F. G. Kerr (1877– 1942), who is recognized as the ‘founding father’ of Thai botany. He was the first botanist to collect Piper specimens from Ranong province.


Piper phangngaense Suwanph. and Hodk. sp. nov.

Etymology The specific epithet of this species refers to its type locality (Sri Phang-Nga National Park, Phangnga province, Thailand).



Piper rugocarpum Y.Banchong and Suwanph., sp. nov.

Etymology The specific epithet refers to the distinguishing character of the fruit surface which is rugate when dry.

[Botany • 2022] New Species and A Revision of the Genus Peperomia (Piperaceae) in Thailand

Abstract
We update the descriptions of seventeen native species of Peperomia in Thailand, including a new species, P. ranongensis, and a detailed morphological description for the uncommon species P. kotana based on Thai specimens. We provide a generic description, a key to all the species and provide lectotypifications for P. bavina, P. heyneana, P. laticaulis, P. nakaharae and P. reflexa var. parvifolia. Five species, P. heptaphylla, P. masuthoniana, P. multisurcula, P. ranongensis and P. sirindhorniana, are endemic to Thailand. Peperomia pellucida is a common pantropical species. Eight species, namely P. cavaleriei, P. dindygulensis, P. heyneana, P. laevifolia, P. masuthoniana, P. moulmeiniana, P. multisurcula and P. sirindhorniana have a high potential for development as ornamental plants.

ABSTRACT
Thunbergia amphaii, a new species from North-Eastern Thailand is described and illustrated. The pseudo-umbel inflorescence is diagnostic for this species. The pollen morphology, especially the size and the pericolpate aperture arrangement, further support this species as new to science.

Thunbergia amphaii Suwanph., K.Khamm., D.J.Middleton & Suddee, sp. nov.

Similar to Thunbergia lutea T.Anderson in overall corolla tube shape but differing in the inflorescence being a terminal simple pseudo-umbel (vs a single axillary flower in T. lutea), bracteoles creamy white to white, elliptic-ovate to ovate, split on both sides for more than half of their length (vs reddish white to purplish red, elliptic, split on one side), calyx 5-lobed (vs 12–14 lobed in T. lutea), with glandular hairs on filaments (vs densely hispid at base in T. lutea), with a uniseriate row of glandular trichome hairs along the line of dehiscence on anthers(vs glabrous in T. lutea), capsule puberulous or scabrous and with glandular hairs (vs glabrous in T. lutea). 

Etymology. —This species is named in honour of Mr Amphai Phaseeda, a park ranger at Phu Langka National Park who first found the plant.

Vernacular. —Nam nae khao amphai (หนามแน่ขาวอัมไพ).

[Botany • 2020] A Synopsis of Thai Piper (Piperaceae)

ABSTRACT
All native and introduced Thai Piper are enumerated to include 46 species and two varieties. Typifications for accepted names and synonyms are made where necessary. Family and generic descriptions, based on Thai collections, are provided. A key to species and varieties and relevant synonymy are also presented. Additional morphological characters for P. smitinandianum are summarised. Data on the distribution, ecology, vernacular names, utilization and collections of each taxon in Thailand are presented in the standard Flora of Thailand format.

A new species, Thunbergia impatienoides, was discovered from Thailand and is here described. Detailed descriptions including pollen and seed morphologies, distribution, ecology and illustration are provided.

Thunbergia impatienoides Suwanph. & S.Vajrodaya, sp. nov.  

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to the gross appearance of its flower which is quite similar to a common ornamental balsam, Impatiens walleriana Hook.f. (Balsaminaceae).

[Botany • 2017] New Species; Peperomia sirindhorniana รักตะนิล, P. heptaphylla, P. masuthoniana & P. multisurcula and A Reinstatement in Peperomia (Piperaceae) from Thailand

Summary
Four new species of Peperomia (Piperaceae) from Thailand, namely Peperomia heptaphyllaPeperomia masuthonianaPeperomia multisurcula and Peperomia sirindhorniana are described and illustrated. The reinstatement of Peperomia dindygulensis is also proposed with supporting morphological evidence.

Etymology: The specific epithet honours Associate Prof. Sumon Masuthon (1952 – present), Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University, who encouraged the first author to intensively study the family Piperaceae for the Flora of Thailand project.
Vernacular Name: เบี้ยเชียงดาว - Bia Chiang Dao.



• Peperomia multisurcula Suwanph. & Hodk. sp. nov. 
Type: Thailand, Nan
Etymology: The specific epithet refers to the stems that have many clumps, and many main stems and branchlets.
Vernacular Name: เบี้ยสะปัน - Bia Sa Pan (Nan).




• Peperomia sirindhorniana Suwanph. & Chantar., sp. nov. 
Type: Thailand, Loei, Nong Hin, Pha Hin Ngam

Conservation Status. This species is uncommon and only a few specimens have been collected from the border area between Loei and Khon Kaen provinces in northeastern Thailand. The populations are narrowly distributed in an area of karst limestone and not in a protected area. The populations are threatened by farming and deforestation. The status of Peperomia sirindhorniana is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR), according to IUCN (2011) criteria and the authors consider a category of B1b to be appropriate.

Etymology: The specific epithet honours to H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Mahidol who initiated the Plant Genetic Conservation Project to develop the personnel and plant genetics resources for the maintenance of plant varieties, and for the development to be advantageous for farmers and the business sector of Thailand.
Vernacular Name: Rak-Ta-Nil.


Notes:
 We discovered some unidentified specimens (T. Smitinand & H. Sleumer 1131 in BKF and L that were collected from Pha Nok Khao, Khon Kaen province, northeastern Thailand. They are similar to Peperomia pellucida in gross morphology but differ in some characters. We have subsequently collected living specimens from a nearby locality and they are easily recognised as a species new to science. The distinguishing characteristics of P. sirindhorniana are its red or reddish petioles and stems, and its bright to dark green leaves when fresh (subcoriaceous when dry) as opposed to pale green (membranous when dried) in P. pellucida. Furthermore, its fruits are larger than P. pellucida and are ovoid with a beaked apex formed from the style and it has densely acute papillae on the fruit surface.

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to Dindygul (the city in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu) from which the type specimens were collected.
Vernacular Name: ผักป้องแดง - Phak Pong Daeng (Chanthaburi).
