[Botany • 2026] Begonia thanhquyetii (Begoniaceae, sect. Petermannia) • A New Species from Quang Tri province, Central Vietnam

Begonia thanhquyetii  C.H. Nguyen, T.A. Le & C.W. Lin,

in Duong, C. H. Nguyen, Le, Bui, Dinh, Dang, Y. T. Nguyen, Tran, T. H. Nguyen, Averyanov et Lin, 2026.

Abstract
Begonia thanhquyetii, a new species from central Vietnam, is herein described and illustrated. It is morphologically most similar to B. baik in its creeping habit, rugose ovate leaves, and protogynous inflorescences. However, it differs in several key morphological characters, including stipules hirsute on the abaxial surface (vs. glabrous), bracts lacking glandular hairs along the margins (vs. glandular-ciliate), a pair of bracteoles present near the apex of the pistillate pedicel (vs. bracteoles absent), abaxial tepals of both staminate and pistillate flowers hirsute (vs. glabrous), and densely hirsute ovary (vs. glabrous). Following the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria (Version 16), B. thanhquyetii is provisionally assessed as Least Concern (LC), pending further field surveys to clarify its distribution and population status.

Gardens’ Bulletin Singapore. 77(1);

ABSTRACT
Newmania bambusifolia Škorničk., Vuong & Bao (Zingiberaceae:
Zingiberoideae), a new ginger species discovered in Hon Ba Nature Reserve, Khanh Hoa
Province in southern Vietnam is described and illustrated here with notes on distribution,
ecology, phenology, preliminary IUCN assessment, and etymology. It is distinct from all
known congeners by the very narrow leaf-blades, resembling those of bamboos. This discovery
increases the total number of species in Newmania to seven. We include an updated key to the
genus accommodating this novelty.

Keywords. Eastern Indochina, gingers, Khanh Hoa Province, Vulnerable, Zingibereae

Unique in the genus by its prominently narrow, bamboo-like leaf-blades and dark purple labellum with overlapping lobes. Flowers are most similar to Newmania cristata by the yellow to greenish floral tube and filament, but differ by having a small anther crest less than 1 mm long with entire rounded apex (vs anther crest 4.6–5 mm long with a bilobed apex).

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the unusually narrow, bamboo-like leaf blades.

Information on type specimens, distribution, habitat and phenology (when available), as well as relevant taxonomic notes are presented for each accepted species, accompanied by plates with analytical photos. Bulbophyllum minhquanii is described as new to science, and B. albidostylidium (identified earlier as B. putii) is reported as a new national record. In total, 14 species of B. sect. Racemosae, of which five are endemic, are documented for Vietnam based on previous and current studies. The occurrences of B. macrocoleum and B. morphologorum in Vietnam remain uncertain and require verification by additional collections.

in Tran, V. C. Nguyen, Averyanov, Wook, Truong, V. K. Nguyen, Maisak et Shvanova, 2025.

Abstract
A new species, Hoya thuhae (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae), from lowland areas of central Vietnam, is described. It resembles H. kerrii but may be distinguished by its finely pubescent petioles, puberulous leaf blade, longer peduncle, longer pilose to strigose pedicels, different shape of the calyx lobes, and elliptic corolla segments with apices raised above the central portion. Additionally, H. lobbii, known earlier in NE India, Thailand, and Cambodia, is recorded for Vietnam at first. Data on the ecology, phenology, distribution, and conservation status for both species are provided, together with plates compiled from original color analytical photos.

Vanilla baosangii

in Dang, Averyanov, Maisak, Tran, ... et B. V. Truong, 2025.

Abstract
Vanilla baosangii discovered in the Central Highlands of southern Vietnam (Don Duong District, Lam Dong Province), is described and illustrated. In floral morphology the new species is similar to Vanilla siamensis and V. tiendatii in having hairs on the apex of the epichile and hairy column. However, it differs from V. siamensis in fewer, but densely arranged, flattened, often forked hairs on median lip lobe, a verruculose surface between the hairy epichle and bunch of scales, two warty keels forming a groove inside the claw, lip side-lobes surface with four to five distinct verruculose lines, lateral wings of clinandrium prominent, semi-circular, and anther cap ca. 4 mm long, with 2 forward curved horns. From V. tiendatii the new species differs in having larger elliptic leaves 18–26 cm long, an inflorescence bearing up to 25 flowers, lip apex with a group of fat branched hairs 4–7 mm long, and column with dense long hairs at apex, much longer than those in the basal half. According to IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria V. baosangii is assessed as a Critically Endangered. An identification key to all species to Vanilla known in Vietnam is provided, based on recent taxonomic treatments.

Abstract
Three species of the genus Hoya (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae) are newly reported for the flora of Vietnam. One species, Hoya honglenae, is described and illustrated as new to science, and two species, H. acuminata and H. phuwuaensis, are reported as new national records known earlier, respectively, in Bhutan, Bangladesh, NE India, W China, Myanmar; and NE Thailand. The new species discovered in Phu Quoc Island (Kien Giang Province) morphologically is most close to H. phuwuaensis, but differs in the entire, straight leaf margin, leaves sparsely white speckled adaxially and dirty purple speckled abaxially, smaller yellow flowers, conoid, obtuse, distally up-cured outer angle of corona lobes, and much longer anther appendages. The paper provides morphological descriptions, data on habitat, phenology, distribution, estimated conservation status, taxonomic notes, a list of studied specimens, and color illustrations for all studied species. Taking into consideration our new data, the genus in Vietnam currently includes 44 species.
