[Botany • 2026] Begonia leasalongae (Begoniaceae, sect. Petermannia) • A New Species from Tago, Surigao del Sur, Mindanao Island, Philippines

 Abstract
A new species of Begonia section Petermannia, Begonia leasalongae, from Surigao del Sur is described and illustrated. It grows on shady, moist, rocky slopes alongside a small creek in sitio Cabugi, Unidos, Tago, Surigao del Sur. The new species resembles Begonia noraaunoriae in having erect stems, obovately oblong leaves, 2-tepaled staminate flowers, 5-tepaled pistillate flowers and an upright capsule, but differs in having stems with setose white hairs (vs. glabrous), lanceolate stipules with an aristate apex (vs. obovately oblong with a roundly acute apex), and capsule with setose white hairs (vs. glabrous). The species is named in honor of Lea Salonga. Based on IUCN criteria, we propose its conservation status as Data Deficient (DD), as only one population is currently known.

[Botany • 2026] Begonia quadricornualata (Begoniaceae, sect. Platycentrum) • A New Species from Arunachal Pradesh, India

Abstract
A new species of Begonia L. (Begoniaceae) belonging to sect. Platycentrum is described from the Papum Pare District of Arunachal Pradesh, India. This new species is distinguished by its dense, long, red to brown hispid hairs on the adaxial leaf surface of female plants, caducous stipules and bracts, and solitary-flowered female inflorescence. Additionally, it features dense, woolly brown ovaries and fruits, the latter bearing four fully developed wings. This paper includes a detailed description, photographic plate, line drawings, a comparative morphological table and a dichotomous key to distinguish the new taxon from closely allied species.

Begonia quadricornualata R.Maity, U.L.Tiwari & S.S.Dash sp. nov. 

Diagnosis: A species morphologically allied to B. handelii Irmsch. and B. tessaricarpa C.B.Clarke, but distinguished by its dense, long, red to brown hispid hairs on the adaxial leaf surfaces of female plants (versus glabrescent in B. handelii, and puberulous in B. tessaricarpa), and its significantly longer petioles, measuring 40–50 cm (versus up to 25 cm in B. handelii and 14–31 cm in B. tessaricarpa). It is further characterized by caducous stipules and bracts (versus persistent in both B. handelii and B. tessaricarpa) and male flowers with 40–60 stamens (versus 70–100 in B. handelii, and 12–20 in B. tessaricarpa). Additionally, female inflorescences are solitary-flowered (versus 2–4-flowered in B. handelii and 2–5-flowered in B. tessaricarpa) and the fruit is 4-winged (versus 4-ridged in B. handelii, and 4-horned in B. tessaricarpa).

Etymology: The specific epithet ‘quadricornualata' refers to the unique development of the four ovary horns into four distinct wings on the fruit. The name is derived from the Latin ‘quattuor' (four), ‘cornu' (horn), and ‘alatus' (winged).

[Botany • 2026] Begonia thanhquyetii (Begoniaceae, sect. Petermannia) • A New Species from Quang Tri province, Central Vietnam

Abstract
Begonia thanhquyetii, a new species from central Vietnam, is herein described and illustrated. It is morphologically most similar to B. baik in its creeping habit, rugose ovate leaves, and protogynous inflorescences. However, it differs in several key morphological characters, including stipules hirsute on the abaxial surface (vs. glabrous), bracts lacking glandular hairs along the margins (vs. glandular-ciliate), a pair of bracteoles present near the apex of the pistillate pedicel (vs. bracteoles absent), abaxial tepals of both staminate and pistillate flowers hirsute (vs. glabrous), and densely hirsute ovary (vs. glabrous). Following the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria (Version 16), B. thanhquyetii is provisionally assessed as Least Concern (LC), pending further field surveys to clarify its distribution and population status.

Abstract 
Begonia hanhhoae, a new species from Khanh Hoa Province, Ninh Hoa District, South Central Coast region, Vietnam, is described and illustrated. It resembles B. aspersa from northern Vietnam but differs in having broadly ovate to suborbicular leaves (vs. reniform) with a slightly waxy adaxial surface (vs. velvety), inflorescence with up to 13 flowers (vs. up to 5), actinomorphic androecium (vs. zygomorphic), and pistillate flowers that are subsessile or borne on very short pedicels up to 1.5 mm long (vs. 4–12 mm). According to the IUCN criteria, it has been tentatively assessed as Endangered (EN).

[Botany • 2026] Begonia occidentalis (Begoniaceae, sect. Baryandra) • A New Species from Mindanao Island, southern Philippines

Abstract
Mindanao, the second-largest island in the Philippines, is a center of plant endemism shaped by its complex geology, varied topography, and high habitat heterogeneity. Continued botanical explorations in the region have led to the discovery of Begonia occidentalis, which is herein described and illustrated. It morphologically resembles B. copelandii in its persistent stipules and capsule with strongly unequal wings, but can be readily distinguished by its arachnoid petiole, ovate leaf lamina with slightly overlapping cordate base and acuminate apex, a weakly serrate margin with densely conspicuous maroon hairs, and dorsally glandular floral bracts. A comprehensive taxonomic account is presented, including detailed morphological description, geographical distribution, habitat, phenology, conservation status and a discussion on its taxonomic affinities. Furthermore, we lectotypify the name B. copelandii in accordance with the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants (Madrid Code).

[Botany • 2026] Begonia mizoramensis (Begoniaceae, sect. Platycentrum) • A New dioecious Species from Mizoram, Northeast India

Abstract
Begonia mizoramensis (Begoniaceae) under Begonia sect. Platycentrum (Klotzsch) A.DC. is described as a new species from Mizoram, Northeast India. It shares similarities in habit, leaf morphology and inflorescence with Begonia longifolia Blume and Begonia acetosella Craib, but differs in several characters, including longer internode, anthers with dehiscence extending beyond half their length, shorter pedicel in pistillate flower and a puberulent ovary with unequal wings. Taxonomic notes and pollen micromorphology are presented to confirm its novelty and sectional placement. Based on the available data, the newly discovered species has been provisionally assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) under the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Diagnosis: Begonia mizoramensis resembles B. longifolia and B. acetosella in habit, leaf morphology and inflorescence but differs by anthers with dehiscence extending beyond half their length, shorter pedicel in pistillate flower (3 mm) and puberulent ovary with unequal wings. B. mizoramensis differs from B. longifolia in sexuality (dioecious vs. monoecious), pedicel in staminate flowers (7–11 mm vs. 25–30 mm) and ovary (puberulent, not inflated vs. glabrous, slightly crested, inflated). It also differs from B. acetosella in peduncle (1– 5.5 mm long, glabrous vs. 2–10 mm long, puberulous), tepal number in pistillate flower (6 vs. 4) and in ovary (3- loculed vs. 4-loculed).

[Botany • 2026] Begonia matillanoae (Begoniaceae, sect. Baryandra) • A New Species from Malampaya Sound Protected Landscape and Seascape, Palawan Island, Philippines

Abstract
A new species, Begonia matillanoae, is here described and illustrated from Malampaya Sound Protected Landscape and Seascape, Palawan Island, Philippines. It closely resembles Begonia cabanillasii but is distinct in having an ovate leaf with irregularly lobed margin, an acute leaf apex, and a 5-tepalled pistillate flower with the larger wing flat to shallowly cucullate. Begonia matillanoae is the latest addition to the Palawan begonias bearing a conspicuously 5-winged ovary. Based on IUCN guidelines, we here propose a  Critically Endangered (CR) conservation designation for this species. A revised key to Palawan Begonia sect. Baryandra bearing five or six conspicuous ovary wings is also provided.

Begonia matillanoae resembles B. cabanillasii in having white-pilose indumentum on its petioles, leaves and peduncles, a 4-tepalled staminate flower, and a conspicuously 5-winged ovary. However, it differs in having an ovate leaf shape (vs suborbicular) with shallow acutely lobed margin (vs crenate), an acute leaf apex (vs acute, obtuse or rounded), and a 5-tepalled (vs 4-tepalled) pistillate flower with largest wing flat to shallowly cucullate (vs distinctly cucullate).

[Botany • 2026] Begonia ilinensis (Begoniaceae, sect. Baryandra) • New Begonia Species from Ilin Island, Occidental Mindoro Province, Philippines and insights to the coastal species of Begonia sect. Baryandra

Abstract
Begonia ilinensis is a newly described species of Begonia sect. Baryandra, first found in the coastal areas of Ilin Island, off the southwestern coasts of Mindoro Island in the Philippines. The species resides in exposed to semi-exposed limestone areas on the coast. The species is notable for its dormancy during the dry months, where it is limited to its minute rhizomes. It only starts growing its foliage and flowers during the wet season of June to November. Morphologically, the species is relatively small compared to most Baryandra species in the Philippines, but resembles Begonia luzonensis, a resident of nearby Luzon Island, mainly by its leaf margins. However, the species is much smaller compared to B. luzonensis specifically in terms of lamina, inflorescences, and capsules, and it lacks the characteristic rusty villous indumentum of B. luzonensis on its leaves, peduncles, and petioles. We also documented and mapped other Begonia sect. Baryandra that we have found thriving on the same habitat as B. ilinensis on other portions of the Philippines to shed further insights on the ecology of these coastal Begonias based on their habitat preferences.

Diagnosis: The plant is observed to be most similar to B. luzonensis, particularly on leaf margins; both species of which may exhibit dentate leaves. However, B. luzonensis foliage is glabrous on both sides (vs. densely villous). Its peduncles are also glabrous (vs. longer villous), and the petioles are glabrescent (vs. sparsely villous). B. ilinensis is also significantly smaller than the more robust B. luzonensis and to most Begonia sect. Baryandra species. To scale, the range of lamina dimension of B. ilinensis is only at 4–6 × 2–5 cm (vs. 12–16 × 7–10 cm in B. luzonensis) and its capsules are very minute with lengths of 1.1–1.2 cm (vs. 2–2.5 cm). B. ilinensis also has more obtuse base on abaxial wing on the ovaries compared to a more truncated and extended abaxial wing of B. luzonensis.

[Botany • 2025] Begonia sordidissima (Begoniaceae, sect. Baryandra) Resolving a Taxonomic Enigma: Rediscovery of the Mindanao endemic Begonia sordidissima after over a Century confirms its distinct status from B. mindorensis

Abstract
Begonia sordidissima has been considered as a synonym of B. mindorensis since 1923. Our recent fieldwork led to the rediscovery of B. sordidissima in Mindanao after more than a century, prompting a detailed morphological study that confirms its reinstatement as a distinct species. We designate lectotypes for both names and provide an emended description, including new data on pistillate flowers, photographs, updated distribution information, habitat preference, and a preliminary IUCN conservation assessment. This work underscores the critical need for continued field exploration and taxonomic revision in biodiversity-rich yet threatened regions such as the Philippines.

Abstract
Begonia chunxiuensis, a new species from Guangxi of China, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to B. sinovietnamica and B. aurora, but differs from them by its narrowly triangular stipules, leaf blade that is adaxially green, dark green to viridian, pinkish-white to white villous, but abaxially light green with red veins, red to pinkish-white villous, and convex anther apex. It also differs from B. sinovietnamica by smaller staminate flowers. The new species is currently known from only two subpopulations and is assessed as ‘Data Deficient' (DD) according to the IUCN red list categories and criteria.

Diagnosis: A new species in Begonia sect. Platycentrum most similar to B. sinovietnamica C.Y.Wu (Wu and Ku 1997) in shape of leaf blades, shape and color of both staminate and pistillate flowers and 3-loculed ovary, but easily distinguished by its narrowly triangular stipules (versus ovate-oblong), leaf blade adaxially green, dark green to viridian (versus brownish-green), abaxially light green with red veins (versus light brownish-green), adaxially pinkish-white to white villous with hairs ca 5 mm long (versus densely hirsute), abaxially red to pinkish-white villous (versus hirsute), outer 2 tepals of staminate flower 10–15 × 8–14 mm, inner 2 tepals 8–12 × 4–5 mm (versus outer 2 tepals ca 21 × 16 mm, inner 2 tepals ca 12 × 5–6 mm) and anther apex convex (versus obtuse).

Etymology: The specific epithet chunxiuensis' refers to the name of type locality, Chunxiu Reservoir in Longzhou County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China. Chinese name is 春秀秋海棠'.

Abstract
Begonia shunzhii, a new species of Begonia sect. Reichenheimia from Guizhou Province of China is described and illustrated. It mostly resembles B. qingchengshanensis and B. puerensis in the same section but considerably differs from the latter two in some characteristics. A detailed morphological comparison of the three species is provided. According to the Guidelines for Using IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, the conservation status of new species is assessed as Endangered (EN B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)).

Diagnosis:—Begonia shunzhii is mostly similar to B. qingchengshanensis Li et al. (2018: 198) but differs mainly by its smaller (2–3 × 1–1.5 mm vs. 3–7 × 2–5 mm) stipules with ciliate (vs. entire) margins without keel (vs. keeled); shorter (1.5–10.5 cm vs. 11–19 cm) petioles, leaves usually greenish-white-spotted (vs. very rarely spotted) and adaxially sparsely short-bristled and non-waxy (vs. subglabrous and waxy), smaller (2–4 × 0.5–2 mm vs. 4.5–5.5 × 3–4.5 mm) bracts, narrowly oblong to sublinear (vs. triangular or ovate-triangular), shorter (8–11 mm vs. 9–25 mm) pedicels, outer tepals ovate to subcircular (vs. narrowly to broadly ovate), smaller (5–9 × 2–3 mm vs. 7−12 × 3−5 mm) inner tepals of staminate flowers, and valvate (vs. separated) two sides of stigmas (Table 1).

ABSTRACT
Begonia watsonii (Begoniaceae), a new species belonging to Begonia section Platycentrum, is described and illustrated from Sadam-Tarey Bhir spur in Namchi district, Sikkim, India. Detailed description, comparative morphology with the allied species, and photograph plates are provided to facilitate the identification of the species.

Abstract
A new species of Begonia is described from lowland northern Sumatra, Indonesia named Begonia elegantifolia Ritonga, Girm. & Mustaqim. The species belongs to section Platycentrum and is unique from other species in having a combination of narrowly lanceolate leaves and flowers with six tepals. The new species is the first species in sect. Platycentrum that posseses staminate flowers with six tepals. Detailed description, diagnoses and photographs are given.

Abstract
Begonia lucivenia, a new species of Begonia sect. Coelocentrum from Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. It resembles B. zhuoyuniae but can be distinguished by its rhizome and internodes length, stipules size, petiole length and leaf blade size and indumentum. It also resembles B. porteri but differs in leaf blade shape, color and indumentum, and flower color. Detailed description is provided.

Diagnosis: The new species differs from the most similar species Begonia zhuoyuniae (Liu et al., 2020) in rhizome and internodes not elongated, stipules larger, petioles longer, leaf blade larger and adaxially more densely villous.

Etymology: The specific epithet “lucivenia” refers to the bright and clearly visible color of the primary and secondary veins of leaf blade. Chinese name is proposed here as “顯脈秋海棠”.
