[Entomology • 2026] Sclerocardius lyali • A New Species of the Genus Sclerocardius Schoenherr, 1847 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) from Thailand

Abstract
A new species, Sclerocardius lyali sp. nov., is described and illustrated from Mae Hong Son Province, Thailand. The new species is close to Sclerocardius indicus Hartmann, 1903, but differs in the body covered with short setiform yellowish and pale scales, the postero-ventral side of the protibia lacking teeth, a pronotum with quite large punctation, and a narrower aedeagus. This is the first record of Sclerocardius Schoenherr, 1847, from Thailand. A key to Asian species of the genus Sclerocardius is also given.

Etymology. Patronymic. In honour of Christopher H.C. Lyal (London, UK), who revised the genus
Sclerocardius.

Diagnosis. This new species is closely related to Sclerocardius indicus Hartmann, 1903, but differs in that it has short setiform yellowish and pale scales on the body, a postero-ventral side of the protibia without teeth, a pronotum with quite large punctation, and a narrower aedeagus. Sclerocardius indicus is characterised by a body covered in long, narrow, orange scales; a pronotum with relatively small punctation; a postero-ventral side of the protibia with three rounded teeth; and the aedeagus is also wider.

Abstract
One new genus and six new species of Namaini are described: Richtersveldiella sanparkensis Borovec and Meregalli, new genus and new species (type locality: Koeroegab); Pentamerica gazella Borovec and Meregalli new species (type locality: Kodaspiek); Namaquania hirta Borovec and Meregalli new species (type locality: Armmanshoek valley); Nama mirifica Borovec and Meregalli new species (type locality: south of Helskloof Pass); Nama vanwyki Borovec and Meregalli new species (type locality: Armmanshoek valley); Nama armmanshoek Borovec and Meregalli new species (type locality: Armmanshoek valley). Biological notes and comparative remarks are added, along with considerations on their distribution. An assessment of their conservation status is also proposed.

Abstract
A new species of Pachyrhynchus Germar, 1824 from Tarragona, Davao Oriental, Pachyrhynchus analynae Obrial, Agbas, Pajota & Medina sp. nov. named after Dr. Analyn Anzano Cabras, for her significant contribution on the advancement of beetle research and conservation in the Philippines particularly on the tribe Pachyrhynchini. The new species is the recent addition to the Pachyrhynchus speciosus species complex. Notes on the species ecology, habitat, distribution, and plant associationare presented.

Pachyrhynchus analynae Obrial, Agbas, Pajota & Medina sp. nov.

Diagnosis: Pachyrhynchus analynae sp. nov. belongs to the P. speciosus species group. In general appearance, this novel species conspicuously resembles a cross between P. miltoni Cabras & Rukmane, 2016, from Marilog, Davao City, and P. cabrasae Rukmane, 2016, from Mt. Kalatungan, Bukidnon. It exhibits a combination of scaly maculations found in both congeners: the longitudinal scaly bands at pronotum which resembles P. miltoni, while reticulate scales at elytra resembles P. cabrasae. However, P. analynae sp. nov. differs with P. miltonibased on the following characteristics: amygdaloid elytral shape, narrower in profile, and tapers apically; elytra bears reticulate net-like maculations that merge and sparsely covered with setae from the apical declivity towards the apex (vs stouter elytra with minute setae only along the lateral margin; with open-and closed-banded variations, with three contiguous scaly bands, with open-banded variation that retains the three scaly bands in P. miltoni).

Abstract
 Two new species of the genus Metapocyrtus Heller 1912, subgenus Dolichocephalocyrtus Schultze 1925 (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Entiminae, Pachyrhynchini) from Northern Mindanao, Philippines are described and illustrated. The novel species are Metapocyrtus (Dolichocephalocyrtusmalindangensis sp. nov. and Metapocyrtus (Dolichocephalocyrtusbaulorum sp. nov. from Mt. Malindang, Misamis Occidental and Gingoog, Misamis Oriental, Northern Mindanao. Photographs of habitus and male genitalia are presented with a brief ecologic note of their habitats.

[Entomology • 2023] Pseudoligota nozakii sp. nov. & P. antennata comb. nov. • Taxonomic Notes on the Genus Pseudoligota Cameron (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Aleocharinae) from Japan

Abstract
The genus Pseudoligota Cameron, 1920 is discovered in Japan for the first time, resulting in two taxonomic changes: a new combination P. antennata (Bernhauer, 1907), comb. nov., and a new species P. nozakii Hashizume, Yamamoto & Maruyama, sp. nov. from Okinawa Prefecture, southwestern Japan. The former species has long been placed in the genus Oligota Mannerheim, 1830. This is the fourth genus in the subtribe Gyrophaenina known from Japan. The species P. affinis Cameron, 1939 from India and Peninsular Malaysia is placed as a junior synonym of P. antennata.

[Entomology • 2023] A Dung-Beetle Impostor: Revision of the Australian Weevil Genus Tentegia Pascoe (Curculionidae: Molytinae: Cryptorhynchini) and the Dung-Rolling Behaviour of Tentegia stupida (Fabricius)

Abstract
The Australian cryptorhynchine weevil genus Tentegia Pascoe, 1873 is unique among Curculionoidea due to its coprophagous life style. The adults roll or pull marsupial dung pellets and cache them under logs, and the larvae develop in the pellets. In a remarkable case of convergent evolution, Tentegia is the only known beetle taxon outside of Scarabaeinae (Scarabaeidae) with such dung-rolling and nesting habits. In this paper the taxonomy of Tentegia is revised, including the redescription of the genus, descriptions of the six former species and three new species from the Northern Territory, T. tompsetti sp. nov., T. grossbechleri sp. nov. and T. weiri sp. nov. Lectotypes are designated for Tentegia quadriseriata Lea, 1912, Tentegia amplipennis Lea, 1930, T. quadrisignata Lea, 1910, T. anopla Lea, 1908, T. bisignata Pascoe and T. quinquesinuata Lea. All species are illustrated and their distributions are mapped, revealing the genus to occur in monsoonal and arid ecosystems of the Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia. The dung-rolling behaviour of Tentegia stupida (Fabricius) is documented on video recordings for the first time.

[Entomology • 2022] Taxonomic Revision of the Genus Miltotranes Zimmerman, 1994 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Molytinae), the Bowenia-Pollinating Cycad Weevils in Australia, with Description of a New Species and Implications for the Systematics of Bowenia

Simple Summary: 
Miltotranes Zimmerman, 1994 is a genus of weevils pollinating Bowenia cycads belonging to two small endemic Australian species included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and CITES Appendix II. We provide the first taxonomic revision of Miltotranes resulting in the identification of two previously described species and a newly recognised speciesM. wilsoni sp. n. from the McIlwraith Range of the Cape York Peninsula. Morphological comparison reveals its affinity to Tranes, whose species are the pollinators of Macrozamia and Lepidozamia cycads. It appears that the association of Miltotranes with Bowenia may represent a secondary host switch in the Tranes group due to a closer relationship between Macrozamia, Lepidozamia and African Encephalartos than with Bowenia. The coincidence of the geographic ranges of Miltotranes weevils with distribution of their cycad hosts indicates that the isolated Bowenia population in the McIlwraith Range may represent a distinct, third species of Bowenia. Likely, the conspecificity of the Miltotranes weevils occurring in the Wet Tropics also suggests that several morphologically enigmatic localised populations represent B. spectabilis, confirming earlier botanical conclusions. The present study highlights the significance of systematic study of tightly plant-associated insects and its relevance for the taxonomy of their host plants.

Abstract
The Australian endemic weevils of the genus Miltotranes Zimmerman, 1994 (Curculionidae: Molytinae: Tranes group), comprising two species, M. prosternalis (Lea, 1929) and M. subopacus (Lea, 1929), are highly host-specific and the only known pollinators of Bowenia cycads, which comprise two CITES-protected species restricted to Tropical Queensland in Australia. In the present study, the taxonomy of Miltotranes is reviewed, a lectotype for the name Tranes prosternalis Lea, 1929 is designated and a new species associated with the Bowenia population in the McIlwraith Range is described as M. wilsoni sp. n. The descriptions and diagnoses of all species are supplemented with illustrations of their habitus and salient structures, and an identification key to all species and a distribution map are provided. Potential implications of the new species and of the taxonomy and biogeography of Miltotranes overall on the systematics and conservation of Bowenia are discussed.

[Entomology • 2024] Zimmiodes australis & Z. papuanus • An Integrative Taxonomic and Phylogenetic Approach reveals A New Genus of Australasian Cycas-pollinating Weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Cossoninae)

Abstract
Cycas is the second-largest genus of cycads in Australia and the sole cycad genus in Papua New Guinea. In contrast to the other Australian cycads, which are mainly pollinated by weevils of the Tranes group of Molytinae, the Australian Cycas species are pollinated by tiny weevils belonging to the subfamily Cossoninae but representing an unnamed genus. This study evaluates the taxonomic status of these weevils by combining morphological examination with molecular phylogenetic analyses and species delineation based on mitochondrial DNA. The results reveal that the Cycas-pollinating weevils in Australia comprise only one species, here described as Zimmiodes australis gen. et sp. nov., with another species in Papua New Guinea, described as Zimmiodes papuanus sp. nov. The phylogenetic analyses and morphological comparison reveal that Zimmiodes belongs in the tribe Pentarthrini of Cossoninae and that the related Tychiodes group includes not only Tychiodes Wollaston, Tychiosoma Wollaston and Nanoplaxes Heller but also Tyrpetes Heller and is also assignable to Pentarthrini. The conspecificity of Zimmiodes weevils from all Australian Cycas species sampled suggests the likely taxonomic oversplitting of the Australian Cycas species and thus provides new insights into the taxonomy of the Australian cycads.

Abstract
The genus Rimboda has hitherto contained six species from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines. Here, Rimboda saekii Fujisawa & Lewis new species is described from specimens collected in the subtropical forests of Amami-Oshima, Tokunoshima, Okinawa-jima Island, and Ishigaki-jima Island, Japan. Specimens were reared from Distylium racemosum (Hamamelidaceae). The occurrence of Rimboda in southwestern Japan represents a significant northward extension in the known geographic range of the genus. We provide habitus photographs, a 3D model and illustrations of the male and female genitalia of R. saekii, as well as a checklist to the world species of Rimboda.

[Entomology • 2023] Scolytus unicornis • A New Species of Scolytus Geoffroy (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) from Yunnan, China

Abstract
Scolytus unicornis, a new species of Scolytus Geoffroy from Yunnan, China, is described and illustrated. Three DNA barcoding sequences (COI, 28S, CAD) of this species are provided. The new species is distinguished from other Asian Scolytus species by the longitudinal wrinkles on the frons only in the area below the eyes, a large median spine situated in the middle of the ventrite 2 base, and female frons with a slightly raised blunt tubercle above the epistoma.

Abstract
Two xyleborine ambrosia beetlesEccoptopterus formosanus sp. nov. and E. intermedius sp. nov. are described from Taiwan and Thailand, respectively, based on DNA sequences (COI and CAD) and morphological characteristics. A key to the Eccoptopterus species of Southeast Asia is provided.

Diagnosis: Female, 2.56−2.64 mm long (mean = 2.61 mm; N = 4), 2.13−2.17× as long as wide (mean = 2.14×; N = 4). Medium body size, declivital armature composed of a pair of major spines on declivital summit and 2–4 minor denticles unevenly spaced on each lateral margin; protibiae slender, broadest at apical 1/3, outer margin armed with six or seven moderated socketed denticles; scutellum broadly linguiform; elytra tapering laterally.

Etymology: Formosa, the former name of Taiwan island, in reference to the collection locality of types. An adjective.

Distribution: Taiwan (Nantou County).

Diagnosis: Female, 1.70−1.90 mm long (mean = 1.80 mm; N = 6), 2.03−2.38× as long as wide (mean = 2.13×; N = 6). Small body size, declivital armature composed of a pair of major spines at interstriae 3 on declivital summit and four minor spines unevenly spaced on each lateral margin, declivity covered with flattened scale-like setae; protibiae slender, broadest at apical 1/3, outer margin armed with four or five moderated socketed denticles, elytra tapering laterally.

Etymology: L. inter + medius = in the middle. The name refers to the morphological characters of the species which lie between those of E. limbus and E. spinosus. An adjective.

Distribution: Thailand (Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Tak, Ubon Ratchathani provinces).
