[Botany • 2026] Bryobium scutatum (Orchidaceae) • A New Species of Bryobium from Sumatra, Indonesia [Flora of Gayo Plateau IV]

Abstract
A new species of Bryobium Lindl. is described based on specimens collected in northern Gayo Plateau, Sumatra. It is provisionally assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) due to its narrow range and imminent threats to its habitat. A detailed description, photographs, an illustration, and a key to Sumatran Bryobium species are provided.

Diagnosis: The new species is superficially similarto B. pullum from Sulawesi but differs in havinglarger floral parts (e.g., sepals 9.5–10.0 vs. 6 mm),a lip mid-lobe (epichile) with a central callus andtwo calli at the base (vs. mid-lobe without calli), lipnot constricted (vs. lip abruptly constricted near themiddle), basal calli of the lip shield-like ( vs. basalcalli ridge-like). Etymology: From the Latin scutatus, ‘carrying ashield’, referring to the shield-like calli on the lip.

[Botany • 2026] Begonia leasalongae (Begoniaceae, sect. Petermannia) • A New Species from Tago, Surigao del Sur, Mindanao Island, Philippines

 Abstract
A new species of Begonia section Petermannia, Begonia leasalongae, from Surigao del Sur is described and illustrated. It grows on shady, moist, rocky slopes alongside a small creek in sitio Cabugi, Unidos, Tago, Surigao del Sur. The new species resembles Begonia noraaunoriae in having erect stems, obovately oblong leaves, 2-tepaled staminate flowers, 5-tepaled pistillate flowers and an upright capsule, but differs in having stems with setose white hairs (vs. glabrous), lanceolate stipules with an aristate apex (vs. obovately oblong with a roundly acute apex), and capsule with setose white hairs (vs. glabrous). The species is named in honor of Lea Salonga. Based on IUCN criteria, we propose its conservation status as Data Deficient (DD), as only one population is currently known.

[Botany • 2026] Corybas apoensis (Orchidaceae: Diurideae) • A New endemic Species from Mt. Apo, Philippines

Abstract
Corybas apoensis, a new species of tribe Acianthinae endemic to Mindanao, is described herein. Among the currently recognized species of the tribe, it most closely resembles C. viridisepalus in overall floral morphology, particularly in having upright flowers borne on a slender, cylindric, erect ovary and the flower possessing a dorsal sepal and labellum tinged with conspicuous carmine veins. Both species further share a pilose labellum. However, this notable new species is distinct by having white floral background and a dorsal sepal being densely papillate on the abaxial surface. We also provided a summarized key morphological characteristics that distinguishes our new species from the later.

[Botany • 2026] Homalomena randii (Araceae) • A New Species of Araceae from West Kalimantan, Borneo

Abstract
Homalomena randii is described and illustrated here as a new species of Araceae from West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The new species is assigned to the Cyrtocladon Supergroup based on a combination of morphological characters, including typically hastate leaf blades with pronounced posterior lobes; staminate flowers consisting of (3–)4(–5) truncate stamens, each surmounted by a large, flat, cream-colored connective; and the presence of conspicuous resin droplets secreted between the staminate flowers. This discovery underscores the strong potential for further discoveries of Homalomena species in underexplored regions of Indonesian Borneo, highlighting the continuing importance of botanical exploration in the area.

Abstract
Impatiens bungerara Mustaqim (Balsaminaceae) is described here as a new endemic species from the northern Gayo Plateau, Sumatra, Indonesia. The new species is similar to I. vitellina Grey-Wilson but differs by branched stems, hairs in leaves and peduncles, and several flower morphologies. A detailed description, discussion, and colour photographs are given.

[Botany • 2026] Goniothalamus metadoxus & Uvaria chrysoflora • Two New Species of Annonaceae from Papua New Guinea

 Abstract 
Two new species of Annonaceae bearing unique or unusual morphologies are described and illustrated from Papua New Guinea. Goniothalamus metadoxus Ezedin, from the Papuan Peninsula, exhibits an extraordinary reduction of the outer petals resulting in an inverted floral morphology where the inner petals appear larger and more prominent. It is further distinguished by its long pedicels, inner petals bearing a densely sericeous indument giving a silvery-white sheen, and long apiculate staminal connectives that are pinkish-lavender in color. Uvaria chrysoflora Ezedin, from the Sepik River basin, is unique in bearing greenish-yellow flowers, making it the first non-red flowered species of its genus from Papuasia. It most closely resembles the widespread U. concava Teijsm. & Binn. and can be further distinguished from the latter by its smaller leaves and larger flowers.

Goniothalamus metadoxus Ezedin, sp. nov. 

Diagnosis — Goniothalamus metadoxus resembles G. caloneurus Miq. in having similar leaf shape and siZe, oblong monocarps, and nearly subequal outer and inner petal siZes but differs in its habit being a small to medium tree up to 15 m tall (vs. shrub up to c. 4 m tall), laminas being chartaceous (vs. coriaceous), secondary veins not impressed above and not prominent below (vs. impressed above, prominent below), cauliflorous fasciculate inflorescences (vs. ramiflorous and solitary), inner petals being longer than the outer (vs. outer petals longer), and the petals silvery-white (vs. yellow-orange).

Etymology — From Greek meta, altered, and doxus, appearance; in reference to the inner petals being longer than the outer petals due to pronounced reduction of the latter.

Uvaria chrysoflora Ezedin, sp. nov. 

Diagnosis — Uvaria chrysoflora resembles U. concava Teijsm. & Binn. in having subglabrous young stems and shortly pedunculate flowers with concave petals, but differs in its yellow-green petals (vs. maroon), petals not conspicuously incurved at apices (vs. strongly incurved), larger flowers measuring 35–50 mm across (vs. c. 18–30 mm), and smaller leaves measuring 10–12 × 5.5–6.5 cm (vs. c. 12–15 × 6–7 cm).

Etymology — From Greek chryso, golden, and Latin flora, flower; in reference to the yellowish-green flowers.

[Botany • 2026] Pseuduvaria sirindhorniana (Annonaceae) • Phylogenetic and Morphological Evidence supports the Recognition of A New Species from southern Thailand

Abstract
Based on the molecular phylogenetic analyses of six plastid DNA regions (matK and rbcL exons; trnL intron; atpB-rbcL, psbA-trnH and trnL-trnF intergenic spacers) and including 57 samples of Pseuduvaria, as well as thorough morphological studies, Pseuduvaria sirindhorniana (Annonaceae, Miliuseae) is described and illustrated here as a new species from Narathiwat, southern Thailand. The new species belongs to a major clade that also includes P. fragrans, P. gardneri, P. glossopetala, P. kwangtungensis, P. multiovulata and P. phuyensis. Pseuduvaria sirindhorniana is morphologically most similar to P. glossopetala, but differs by having basally connate (vs. free) sepals, larger petals, elliptic-ovate (vs. obovate) outer petals, inner petals that are only connivent at the apex (vs. connivent from the base to ± the midpoint and at the apex), with openings formed from the base (vs. openings formed from ± the midpoint). Pseuduvaria kwangtungensis turns out to be a putative sister of the new species, but the two are morphologically dissimilar in several traits, such as leaf base, inner petal appearance and glands on the inner side of the inner petals.

 Pseuduvaria sirindhorniana differs from the morphologically most similar species, P. glossopetala, by having basally connate (vs. free) sepals, larger petals, elliptic-ovate (vs. obovate) outer petals, inner petals that are only connivent at the apex (vs. connivent at the apex and from the base to ± the midpoint), with openings formed from the base (vs. openings formed from ± the midpoint). 

Etymology — The specific epithet honours H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, who has continuously supported the study of plant taxonomy in Thailand and worldwide, on the auspicious occasion of her 72nd (6th cycle) birthday anniversary (2 April 2027). She has also been instrumental in establishing the Plant Genetic Conservation Project under the Royal Initiative (RSPG), which aims to train personnel and develop plant genetic resources for the conservation of plant diversity, with benefits extending to farmers and related sectors of the country.

[Botany • 2026] Tweeddalea capsiciformis (Araceae: Schismatoglottideae) • Unveiling the Fifteenth Species of Tweeddalea from Indonesian Borneo

Abstract
A new species of the genus Tweeddalea (Araceae), Tweeddalea capsiciformis, is described and illustrated from West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. This species increases the number of described species in the genus to fifteen. The discovery of T. capsiciformis not only extends the known distribution range of the genus but also highlights the rich yet still insufficiently explored diversity of Araceae in Borneo.

 Etymology. The specific epithet capsiciformis refers to the chili-like shape of the spathe, which resembles the fruit of Capsicum L. (Solanaceae).

[Botany • 2026] Aeschynanthus luteoflorus (Gesneriaceae) • A New Species from Kalimantan, Indonesia

Abstract
Aeschynanthus luteoflorus (Gesneriaceae) is here described as a new species from Kalimantan, Indonesia, adding to the diversity of Aeschynanthus in Borneo. The species is morphologically similar in its inflorescence to A. dasycalyx Hallier f. but distinguished by elliptic, sometimes oblong leaves, ovate-elliptic bracteoles, and a tubular-cupuliform calyx that is brown to bright greenish-yellow. It further differs in having a bright greenish-yellow and longer corolla. The new species is also distinct from A. flavidus Mendum & P. Woods by its elliptic, sometimes oblong leaves, tubular-cupuliform calyx, and markedly shorter corolla, which is approximately 1.5 times the calyx length. Notes on distribution, ecology, conservation status, and comparative illustrations are provided.

Aeschynanthus luteoflorus Zainudin, Idris & Yudistira, sp. nov.   

 Diagnosis: A. luteoflorus is similar to A. dasycalyx Hallier f., but differs in having elliptic, sometimes oblong leaves (vs. ovate); ovate-elliptic bracteoles (vs. linearlanceolate); and a tubular-cupuliform calyx (vs. ovatesubcylindrical to sub-urceolate) that is brown to bright greenish yellow (vs. shiny blackish blue). Furthermore, it possesses a longer corolla (2.3–2.5 cm vs. 1.8–2 cm), that is bright greenish yellow (vs. vivid red). A. luteoflorus also differs from A. flavidus Mendum & P.Woods, another yellow-flowered species from Borneo, by its elliptic, sometimes oblong leaves (vs. narrowly to broadly elliptic), tubular-cupuliform calyx (vs. tubular to infundibuliform), and a significantly shorter corolla (2.3– 2.5 cm vs. 5.5–6.3 cm) that is approximately 1.5 times the calyx length (vs. >2 times) (Table 1).


Etymology: The specific epithet refers to the flower color; 'luteoflorus' translates to yellow-flowered. This term is a combination of two Latin roots: luteus (yellow) and florus (derived from flos, flower).  

Vernacular name: In the Banjar language, Aeschynanthus is called "Kambang Gincu," which means "lipstick flower" (kambang = flower, gincu = lipstick).

[Botany • 2026] Gaultheria rostrata (Ericaceae) • A New Species endemic to Mindanao Island, Philippines

Abstract
Gaultheria rostrata, a new species of wintergreen endemic to Mindanao Island, Philippines, is here described and illustrated. It resembles Gaultheria bartolomei, endemic to Luzon Island, but differs by having a terrestrial habit, shorter petioles, longer pedicels, white or pale-pink corollas, coiled corolla lobes, longer anther tubules, and a longer style. The flowers of Gaultheria rostrata are unique among Asian species of Gaultheria on account of their coiled corolla lobes exposing the anthers and style at anthesis. This discovery raises the number of Gaultheria species in the Philippines to 16.

Gaultheria rostrata M.N.Tamayo, P.W.Fritsch & Medecilo, sp. nov.

This species resembles the Philippine endemic Gaultheria bartolomei (Ferreras & Argent) Kron & P.W.Fritsch but differs by having a terrestrial habit (vs epiphytic), shorter petioles (4–4.5 mm vs 5–7 mm), longer pedicels (20–35 mm vs 20–25 mm), white or pale-pink corollas (vs deep pink), corolla lobes coiled (vs reflexed), longer anther tubules (4–4.5 mm vs c.1 mm), and a longer style (10–11 mm vs c.8 mm).

Etymology. The specific epithet rostrata alludes to the morphological resemblance of the flowers of the new species to avian beaks or proboscides.

Abstract
Vaccinium sulawesiense Mustaqim & P.W.Fritsch, a newly discovered endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia, is described. This species is similar to V. simulans Sleumer but differs in having an acuminate leaf apex, larger floral organs, and an absence of trichomes in the upper half of the inner surface of corolla and disk. This species is known from the two specimens, one from a mid-montane rain forest in Mamasa Regency, Sulawesi Barat Province and the another from Poso Regency, Sulawesi Tengah Province. An updated list of the 17 known Vaccinium species in Sulawesi is also provided.

[Botany • 2026] Rhododendron yombuwurii (Ericaceae, subgen. Vireya) • A New orange-flowered Species from Central Sulawesi, Indonesia

Abstract
A new species of Rhododendron subgenus Vireya from Central Sulawesi, Rhododendron yombuwurii, is described. The species is known from material originating from the Tokorondo Range, northwest of Lake Poso, and is currently cultivated at a lower elevation near Saluopa Waterfall, where it grows epiphytically and produces small, bright orange flowers. We provide a detailed morphological description, comparative microscopic observations, notes on distribution, habitat and ecology, and a preliminary conservation assessment. Phylogenetic analyses based on the nuclear ribosomal ITS region support the placement of the species within subgenus Vireya and its distinction from morphologically similar taxa.

Rhododendron yombuwurii Hutabarat, Bandjolu & Zulfadli, sp. nov.

Diagnosis: Rhododendron yombuwurii is most closely allied to R. celebicum (Blume) DC. (de Candolle, 1839), and shows affinity to R. impressopunctatum J.J.Sm. (Smith, 1932), and R. vidalii subsp. brachystemon Argent (Argent, 2003). It differs from R. celebicum by its raised midrib and lateral veins (vs. slightly impressed), semi-erect to horizontal inflorescences (vs. pendulous), glabrous calyx externally (vs. densely scaly), and much smaller orange corolla, 17–22 × 12–16 mm (vs. 35–46 × 20–25 mm, pink to red). From R. impressopunctatum it differs in having smaller leaves, fewer-flowered inflorescences, smaller orange corollas, and filaments clustered at the corolla mouth rather than exserted. The species further differs from R. vidalii subsp. brachystemon by its scaly young twigs becoming glabrescent, longer leaves with raised veins, glabrous calyx externally, smaller orange corolla, and a sparsely scaly to nearly glabrescent ovary. [Botany • 2026] Hellwigia opalina (Zingiberaceae: Alpinieae) • A New Species of the enigmatic Jade Gingers of Sulawesi, Indonesia

Abstract
The Indonesian Island of Sulawesi is home to a number of members of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae, with unusual turquoise flowers not found anywhere else. A recent paper reinstating Hellwigia, using molecular evidence, placed these “jade gingers” in this genus. During a joint expedition between the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and Bogor Botanical Gardens 26 years ago, an interesting jade ginger was collected at Mt. Sojol. This is similar to two other named species from Sulawesi, H. coeruleoviridis and H. glacicaerulea, in having unusual dimorphic, turquoise-bluish green flowers but differs from both in the much shorter ligule without a demarcation line and is described here as Hellwigia opalina. In preparation for this, all available material of jade gingers from Sulawesi was examined, and all except the collections from Mt. Sojol had a long ligule with a demarcation line similar to H. coeruleoviridis and H. glacicaerulea. It is, however, questionable whether the identification by R.M. Smith of several collections from Lore Lindu National Park, Central Sulawesi, matches the type of H. coeruleoviridis, which was lost in Berlin during the Second World War. Until this species has been recollected at its type locality, here identified as Mt. Tentolomatinan, 300 km away, the identification cannot be easily ascertained. Rhizomes from Mt. Sojol were cultivated in botanic gardens, and plants cultivated at the Royal Botanic Garden flowered several times, which enabled detailed studies and dissection of both flower morphs. This is usually impossible during fieldwork and emphasizes the importance of cultivation of gingers—not just for ex situ conservation but also for research purposes. Detailed photographs taken of the cultivated plants were used to obtain a better morphological understanding and to illustrate Hellwigia opalina in the present paper.

Hellwigia opalina Ardiyani & A.D.Poulsen, sp. nov.
 
Diagnosis. Similar to Hellwigia glacicaerulea (R.M.Sm.) Senjaya & A.D.Poulsen in having inflorescences of secund cincinni bearing turquoise-blue, dimorphic flowers but differing in its shorter ligule (2–3.5 mm, coriaceous vs. 20–30 mm, marcescent), shorter petiole (7–12 mm vs. 20–30 mm), leaf blades being densely tomentose beneath (vs. shortly tomentose), and tomentose inflorescence rhachis (vs. shortly tomentose).

Etymology. The epithet means ‘opal-colored’ from Greek, opallios, an opal.
