Abstract

The wishbone spider genus Damarchus, belonging to the family Bemmeridae, encompasses four recognized genera: Atmetochilus, Damarchus, Homostola, and Spiroctenus. Current distribution records indicate that Atmetochilus and Damarchus are exclusively found in Asia. To date, ten species of Damarchus have been documented, with three species reported in Thailand. However, our field surveys conducted since 2015 have identified multiple undescribed species within the genus that remain unclassified. Through detailed morphological analyses, we describe a new species, Damarchus sirindhornae Kunsete & Warrit, sp. nov., discovered in Doi Inthanon National Park. This species is classified within the workmani-group but can be distinguished from other members of the group by the absence of spines on the male coupling spur and the absence of secondary receptacles on the female spermathecae.

Abstract

During the revision of the resin bees subgenus Callomegachile Michener, 1962 in Thailand, we have identified and illustrated a novel species, Megachile (Callomegachile) sirindhornae Chatthanabun & Warrit, sp. nov. This discovery is based on three female specimens collected from northeastern and western regions of Thailand. The species exhibits an association with Akschindlium godefroyanum (Kuntze) H. Ohashi (Fabaceae), which serves as a floral resource. Additionally, the barcode sequence derived from the COI region of this new species has been submitted to GenBank, with the accession number PX354073.

Megachile( Callomegachile) sirindhornae Chatthanabun & Warrit, sp. nov. 

Diagnosis.–Female resembles M.(Callomegachile) albobasalis Smith, 1879, in overall appearance: black body; metasoma covered with brick-red hairs on apex (Fig. 1B, E); scopa brick-red hairs (Fig. 1E) except fore-and hindwing light yellow hyaline with brown vein(Fig. 1B, E); T1 without white hairs; inner side of tarsi covered black hairs.

Etymology.–The species is named in honor of the auspicious occasion of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's 70th birthday anniversary, celebrated on April 2nd, 2025. 

Common name.–Sirindhorn’s resin bee (Thai: ผึ้งยางไม้เจ้าฟ้าหญิงสิรินธร)

Abstract

The genus Damarchus Thorell, 1891, represents a relatively neglected group of mygalomorph spiders distributed across several Asian countries, including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand. This study describes a new species, Damarchus inazuma sp. nov., discovered in Thailand. The male D. inazuma is identified by the presence of three diminutive spines on the tibial apophysis, whereas the female is characterized by an elongated spermathecal stalk that exhibits an inward curvature. Additionally, we report the identification of a gynandromorph specimen of D. inazuma, marking the first recorded instance of this condition within the family Bemmeridae.

Abstract

The wishbone spider of genus Atmetochilus Simon, 1887 (Nemesiidae: Bemmerinae) containing six species and is known from Asia. We describe a new Thai species, Atmetochilus songsangchotei sp. nov. Since the holotype of the type species of Atmetochilus, A. fossor, is presumed lost, we describe fresh specimens (ARA-2018-132) and designate one as as neotype; similarly, because a holotype (only syntypes) of Atmetochilus atriceps in NHMUK was not designated, we chose the most intact specimen of the syntypes (NHMUK 1895.9.21.16) and designate it as lectotype. From a photo of the type specimen of Atmetochilus bifidus (sternum) from ZSI, we transfer Atmetochilus bifidus back to Damarchus.
