[Entomology • 2026] Attenboroughnculus tau • A New Genus of Pedunculinae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) from Chile and A Key to the World Genera

ABSTRACT
A new genus of Pedunculinae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) is described: Attenboroughnculus De Ketelaere and Broad, gen. n. a monotypic genus for Attenboroughnculus tau De Ketelaere and Broad, sp. n. collected in central Chile. This is the fourth genus and fourth described species of Pedunculinae and the second from the Neotropics. Each of the four known genera is defined by putative apomorphies, included in an identification key, and photos of each are provided.

Attenboroughnculus De Ketelaere and Broad, gen. n.
  
Etymology: 
This unique genus from Chile has been named after Sir David Attenborough ahead of his 100th birthday, celebrating the broadcaster and biologist’s highly distinctive contribution to our understanding of the natural world. David Attenborough has featured Chile’s diverse, extreme landscapes in several documentaries, emphasising the unique environmental challenges and ecological resilience of species within the country.

Sir David has also filmed several scenes with parasitoid wasps, famously termed the ‘bodysnatcher wasp’ by the broadcaster in the Trials of Life, first broadcast in 1990. He has used his work to reveal the intimate, unseen or overlooked within nature. This resonates in the discovery of this species in an unsorted drawer within the collections of the Natural History Museum, London.

In 2023 Sir David revealed a new bronze quote outside the Natural History Museum, London, reading: The future of the natural world, on which we all depend, is in our hands. We are using this opportunity to echo this message through the naming of this new genus of tiny wasp.

We hope to inspire global scientists to take another look in their collections to see if there is something small that could contribute to our collective understanding and therefore the future of our natural world. The name is a concatenation of ‘Attenborough’ and ‘Pedunculus’.

Etymology: Named after the large, capital ‘T’ marking on the second metasomal tergite, with ‘tau’ being the Greek for ‘T’. A noun in apposition.

Abstract
A new species of the genus Gilen Reshchikov & van Achterberg, 2018 (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae, Ctenopelmatinae), G. principissa Chansri, Kerkig & Reshchikov, sp. nov., from Thailand is described and illustrated based on female specimens collected with Malaise traps. A molecular phylogenetic tree is presented based on DNA barcode sequences of representative Ctenopelmatinae, including sequences from both known Gilen species. The new species was recovered as sister to G. orientalis Reshchikov & van Achterberg, 2018 with 100% bootstrap support, but on a long branch. Comparison of the sequences revealed that they differ at 88 positions out of 658 (13.4%) possibly indicating that their lineages diverged between six and 13 million years ago.

Abstract 
Gilen gen. nov. (type species G. orientalis sp. nov.) from South East Asia is described and illustrated. The new taxon has a produced mid-longitudinal facial projection, which differentiates it from all other known genera of Ichneumonidae. It belongs to the tribe Perilissini in the subfamily Ctenopelmatinae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) and is recorded from Laos, Northern Thailand and Vietnam.

[Entomology • 2025] Cotesia ginginensis • A New Species of parasitoid wasp (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Microgastrinae) from Queensland, Australia

Cotesia Cameron, 1891 is the third largest genus of the braconid subfamily Microgastrinae, both in terms of described species  (>320  worldwide)  and  estimated  true  diversity  (1500+  species)  (Fernández-Triana et  al.  2020).  The  genus  is cosmopolitan  and  has  a  broad  host  range,  with  30  different  families  of lepidoptera  recorded  as  hosts,  and  with  many species acting as important biological control agents of pest lepidopterans (Fernández-Triana et al. 2020). The Australian Cotesia fauna was recently reviewed; there are 22 species currently known from the country, including several species introduced for biological control (Fagan-Jeffries et al. 2024; Fagan-Jeffries & Austin 2020).
 
Whilst there are likely to be many undescribed species of Cotesia in Australia and surrounding regions, we take the opportunity to add a single new species to the list of named biodiversity that was collected as part of a citizen science project, Insect Investigators. This citizen science project (insectinvestigators.com.au) ran in 2022 and involved 50 regional schools in Queensland, South Australia, and western Australia (Howe et al. 2025; insectinvestigators.com.au). Students and teachers ran Malaise traps on or near their school property, the samples were sorted and DNA barcoded, and a selection of specimens were sent to taxonomists to identify or include in current taxonomic projects. Two Queensland schools, gin gin State High School and Prospect Creek State School, each caught a single female specimen of a species in the genus Cotesia. Students and teachers at gin gin State High School collaborated with the authors to name the new species in 2023, and we here formally describe the species and raise the number of Cotesia from Australia to twenty-three.

Diagnosis. Cotesia ginginensis can be separated from all other species of Cotesia currently described from Australia and Papua New guinea by the following combination of characters: mesosoma not dorsal-ventrally flattened (i.e., not as in Cotesia nonagriae (olliff, 1893)); fore wing r vein clearly longer than 2rS (r length >1.4 × length of 2rS); centre of the medial band of the mesoscutellar disc smooth; propodeum strongly sculptured with the medial carina clearly distinct for the whole length; T1 slightly broadening posteriorly but not strongly wedge-shaped (i.e., not as in C. ruficrus (Haliday, 1834)); T2 not strongly sculptured and T3 not densely setose (i.e., not as in C. rubecula (Marshall, 1885)).

[Entomology • 2025] World checklist of the Genus Lipolexis Förster (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) with Description of Lipolexis khaoyaiensis, A New Species from Thailand

Abstract
We describe and illustrate a new species of the aphidiine braconid genus Lipolexis Förster, Lipolexis khaoyaiensis sp. nov., from Thailand, using an integrative approach. Morphologically, the new species is similar to L. peregrinus Tomanović and Kocić, 2020, but molecular analysis showed clear separation of at least 27 independent Lipolexis lineages, only eight of which correspond to previously known species, plus the one which represents the new species described here. A molecular phylogeny based on all available barcodes support that the genus comprises two well supported clades, with L. khaoyaiensis sp. nov. being recovered in the gracilis species-group with strong support (100% ultrafast bootstrap). A modified section of the identification key to species of Lipolexis is added to include the new species. Reported host associations for each of the described species as well as a distribution map of all records of species plus provenances of all barcoded specimens is provided.

Abstract
Three new fossil species of braconid wasps are described and illustrated from late Eocene Baltic amber: Palaeorhoptrocentrus tenuicornis sp. nov. (Doryctinae), Taphaeus obscurus sp. nov. (Brachistinae: Diospilini), and Eubazus electrus sp. nov. (Brachistinae: Brachistini). Keys to the known species of Palaeorhoptrocentrus Belokobylskij, 2023 and to species of Eubazus Nees, 1812 described from Baltic amber are provided. An illustrated redescription of Blacus (Electroblacus) facialis Brues, 1933 (Brachistinae: Blacini) is also provided, along with digital photographs for the first time of the female of B. (Electroblacus) facialis, whose type material was lost during the World War II. We also provide morphological notes and digital photographs of a male belonging to an undescribed species of Meteorus (Euphorinae).

Abstract
The Nearctic species of the parasitoid wasp genus Eparces are revised. A new species, Eparces australis Claridge & Dal Pos sp. nov., is described from the southeastern USA. Additionally, nomenclatural comments on the other Nearctic species, Eparces quadriceps (Cresson, 1867) are provided, along with new records for the species from various states in the USA.

[Entomology • 2024] Syntretus perlmani Drosophila are hosts to the First described Parasitoid Wasp (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) of Adult Flies

Abstract
Parasitoid wasps are exceptionally diverse and use specialized adaptations capable of manipulating the physiology and behaviour of host organisms. In more than two centuries since the first records of Drosophila-parasitizing wasps, nearly 200 described and provisional parasitoid species of drosophilids have been identified. These include endoparasitoids and ectoparasitoids, as well as species attacking larval and pupal hosts. Despite a deep history of research attention and remarkable biodiversity, a wasp species that attacks and develops inside the adult stage of a fly host has not been described previously. Here we report the discovery of a wasp species that infects the adult stage of fruit flies in the genus Drosophila, including one of the most deeply studied model organisms in biology, Drosophila melanogaster. Notably, this wasp can be easily collected from backyard fly baits and has a broad geographic distribution throughout the eastern USA. We document its life history and unique host interactions, including egg-laying into and larval emergence from adult flies, and provide protocols to raise wasps from wild-caught host flies. Our results emphasize the need for ongoing research investment in insect biodiversity and systematics. As parasitoid research continues to uncover unusual biology and supports fundamental mechanistic insights into immunity, metabolism, ecology, evolution and behaviour, we anticipate that this wasp’s association with the laboratory model organism, D. melanogaster, will provide new research opportunities across the life sciences.

Differential diagnosis. Syntretus perlmani sp. nov is a tiny species that is distinct from other known Syntretus species by virtue of its small size (body length about 1.5 mm) and utilization of adult Drosophila flies as hosts. The antenna is shorter than the head and mesosoma combined, and there are 12–13 flagellomeres. Often the antenna has only 12 flagellomeres (the lowest number recorded for any North American Syntretus species).
Of the North American species, S. perlmani is most similar to Syntretus brevicornis Muesebeck, which also has a small body size and short antenna. Of the two species, S. perlmani is the smaller, with a body length of about 1.5 mm, as compared to 2.2 mm for ...

Etymology. This species is named after Steve Perlman (University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada), in recognition of his contributions to research and mentorship in the field of Drosophila–parasite interactions.

[Entomology • 2024] Thaictenopelma splendida • A New enigmatic Genus of the ichneumonid (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Ctenopelmatinae) from northern Thailand

Abstract
The Ctenopelmatinae is one of the least explored groups of Ichneumonidae in South East Asia. We describe and illustrate an enigmatic new genusThaictenopelma Ranjith, Reshchikov & Quicke with the type species, T. splendida Ranjith, Reshchikov & Quicke, sp. nov., from a moderately high altitude site in northern Thailand. The new genus shows a unique set of morphological characters that distinguishes it from all other ctenopelmatine genera. The presence of a pair of complete latero-median as well as complete dorso-lateral carinae on the T2 are considered autapomorphic characters of the new genus. Affinities of the new genus within the Ctenopelmatinae are discussed and a note on the taxonomic placement is provided.

Diagnosis: Thaictenopelma gen. nov. can be separated from all other ctenopelmatine genera by its putatively autapomorphic carination pattern of T1 and T2. In particular, the pairs of complete latero-median and dorso-lateral carinae on T2 are completely unknown for the subfamily (Townes 1970). Additionally, the new genus can be distinguished from other ctenopelmatines by a combination of characters viz., the lower tooth of mandible being longer than upper tooth, propodeum with distinct carination, fore wing with rhombic areolet, T2 and T3 with posteriorly diverging groove basally, and T3 with distinct medio-basal protuberances.

Etymology: The generic name derived from a combination of ‘Thai’ for Thailand and ‘Ctenopelma’, type genus of the subfamily Ctenopelmatinae.

Abstract
The Darwin wasp genus Epelaspis Townes, 1970 (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Phygadeuontinae) is studied in some countries of South America. We recorded the genus for the first time in Colombia, and five new species are described: Epelaspis boteroi Lima & Fernandes, sp. nov., Epelaspis constantinoi Lima & Fernandes, sp. nov., Epelaspis lulo Lima & Fernandes, sp. nov., Epelaspis tavoi Lima & Fernandes, sp. nov., and Epelaspis wagneri Lima & Fernandes, sp. nov.. Furthermore, E. anorus Townes, 1970 is newly documented for Brazil, while the geographic ranges of E. renatoi Graf & Kumagai, 1996 and E. ketiae Graf & Kumagai, 1996 are extended within the country. Abstract
Dolichomitus is a moderately large genus comprising 87 known species, 21 of which occur in the Neotropical region. Here, eight new species from Peru are described and figured: D. chetsorr Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov., D. illa Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov., D. maquinaccasa Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov., D. puka Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov., D. quellue Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov., D. yanasiki Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov., D. urqu Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov., and D. willapi Inga & Alvarado, sp. nov.. Dolichomitus annulicornis (Cameron) and D. meii Di Giovanni & Sääksjärvi are recorded from Peru for first time. Furthermore, Umanella tricoloripes Herrera-Florez is transferred to Dolichomitus, and D. pimmi Araujo & Pádua is synonymized with D. tricoloripes (Herrera-Florez, 2018); and a key to Neotropical species is provided.

[Entomology • 2023] Megischus shixiangi • A New Species and A New Record Species of Megischus Brullé (Hymenoptera: Stephanidae) from Vietnam

Abstract
A new crown wasp species, Megischus shixiangi Ge & Tan, sp. nov. from Vietnam (Hymenoptera: Stephanidae), is described and illustrated. In addition, M. kuafu Ge & Tan is first recorded in Vietnam. A distribution map of the Vietnamese species is provided.

 Megischus shixiangi Ge & Tan, sp. nov. 

Diagnosis: Head with blackish vertex distinctly contrasting with dark reddish temple; Vertex irregular rugosity, with three or four (the last one rather weak and incomplete) strong regularly curved lamelliform carinae behind posterior teeth. Pronotum comparatively slender, pronotal fold distinct developed; neck at distinct lower level than the middle part of pronotum in lateral view; Forewing with vein 2Cub distinctly shorter than vein cu+a; Hind tibia with its widened part rather weakly concaves basally in lateral view.

Etymology: We named the new species after Prof. Shi-Xiang Zong. To thank him for his kind support for the first author’s taxonomy research.

[Entomology • 2023] Eiphosoma caqueta, E. eneke, E. interpunctum, etc. • Five New Species of Eiphosoma Cresson, 1865 (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Cremastinae) from Colombia, New Records, and A Key to Colombian Species

Abstract
A taxonomic study of the species of the Darwin wasp genus Eiphosoma Cresson, 1865 (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Cremastinae) from the department of Caquetá, Colombia, resulted in five new species being described: Eiphosoma caqueta sp. nov. (Type locality: Curillo, Caquetá), E. eneke sp. nov. (Type locality: San Vicente del Caguán, Caquetá) E. interpunctum sp. nov. (Type locality: Solano, Caquetá,), E. rumi sp. nov. (Type locality: Florencia, Caquetá) and E. sinecarenatum sp. nov. (Type locality: Florencia, Caquetá). With this paper, the number of Eiphosoma species from Colombia increases from three to 16. Eiphosoma bogan Gauld, 2000; E. dentator (Fabricius, 1804); E. dolopon Gauld, 2000; E. fluminense Costa Lima, 1953; E. fuzhi Gauld, 2000; E. macrum (Enderlein, 1921); E. minense Costa Lima, 1953 and E. tantalium Gauld, 2000 are recorded for the first time from Colombia. A dichotomous key to the Colombian species is presented.
