[Botany • 2026] Bryobium scutatum (Orchidaceae) • A New Species of Bryobium from Sumatra, Indonesia [Flora of Gayo Plateau IV]

Abstract
A new species of Bryobium Lindl. is described based on specimens collected in northern Gayo Plateau, Sumatra. It is provisionally assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) due to its narrow range and imminent threats to its habitat. A detailed description, photographs, an illustration, and a key to Sumatran Bryobium species are provided.

Bryobium scutatum Mustaqim, J.Champion & Schuit., sp. nov. 

Diagnosis: The new species is superficially similarto B. pullum from Sulawesi but differs in havinglarger floral parts (e.g., sepals 9.5–10.0 vs. 6 mm),a lip mid-lobe (epichile) with a central callus andtwo calli at the base (vs. mid-lobe without calli), lipnot constricted (vs. lip abruptly constricted near themiddle), basal calli of the lip shield-like ( vs. basalcalli ridge-like). The base of the lip is dark reddish ...

Etymology: From the Latin scutatus, ‘carrying ashield’, referring to the shield-like calli on the lip.

[Botany • 2025] Impatiens bungerara (Balsaminaceae) • A New Species with flame-coloured flowers from Sumatra, Indonesia [Flora of Gayo Plateau I]

Abstract
Impatiens bungerara Mustaqim (Balsaminaceae) is described here as a new endemic species from the northern Gayo Plateau, Sumatra, Indonesia. The new species is similar to I. vitellina Grey-Wilson but differs by branched stems, hairs in leaves and peduncles, and several flower morphologies. A detailed description, discussion, and colour photographs are given.

Abstract
Vaccinium sulawesiense Mustaqim & P.W.Fritsch, a newly discovered endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia, is described. This species is similar to V. simulans Sleumer but differs in having an acuminate leaf apex, larger floral organs, and an absence of trichomes in the upper half of the inner surface of corolla and disk. This species is known from the two specimens, one from a mid-montane rain forest in Mamasa Regency, Sulawesi Barat Province and the another from Poso Regency, Sulawesi Tengah Province. An updated list of the 17 known Vaccinium species in Sulawesi is also provided.

[Botany • 2026] Homalomena bungamerah (Araceae: Philodendreae) • A New Species from Northern Sumatra, Indonesia

Abstract
A new litophytic species of Homalomena from Sumatra, Homalomena bungamerah, is described. The new species is unique in having a plicate verrucose upper leaf surface combined with the absence of interpistillar staminodes. Owing to the ongoing threats and small population, H. bungamerah is provisionally assessed as Critically Endangered (CR B2 ab(iii,v)). Morphological descriptions, photographs, and notes are given.

Homalomena bungamerah Mustaqim, A.S.D.Irsyam & M.R.Hariri, sp. nov. 

 Diagnosis: This species is unique in having large and plicate leaves, a spathe that nodding at anthesis, and pistillate flowers without an interpistillar staminode. The most morphologically similar species is H. mobula P.C.Boyce 1/2), the larger leaf lamina (16.5–25.8 × 7.7–14.6 cm vs. 7.5–12 × 2.5–6 cm), and the absence of interpistillar staminodes. 
 
Etymology: The specific epithet “bunga merah” is derived from the Malay language, reflecting the inflorescence (“bunga”) with red (“merah”) peduncle and spathe. Malay is the indigenous language in Langkat Regency, where the type material was collected.

[Botany • 2025] Gastrodia biruensis (Orchidaceae: Epidendroideae) • A New Species from East Java, Indonesia

Abstract
Gastrodia biruensis Dwitara, Fatih, Yudistira & Mustaqim, a new mycoheterotrophic orchid species from the eastern part of Java, Indonesia, is described and illustrated. It is similar to two other Javan endemics G. crispa J.J.Sm. and G. selabintanensis Tsukaya & A.Hidayat, but differs in several morphological details, as well as flower colour. Information on its distribution and ecology, photographs and illustrations are provided.

Gastrodia biruensis Dwitara, Fatih, Yudistira & Mustaqim, sp. nov.

Diagnosis: Gastrodia biruensis is similar to G. crispa J.J.Sm., but differs in having larger flowers (3.2–3.8 × 1.2–1.7 cm vs 1.8–2 × 0.9–1.3 cm), smooth (vs warty) outer sepal surface, petals white with an orange center extending to the apex (vs pure white), a larger labellum (11–13 × 7–10 mm vs 7–7.6 × 6–7 mm), labellum whitish-orange in the basal half and orange in the upper half, with two orange calli (vs white suffused pale yellowish green near apex), apex of labellum obtuse (vs acute), a longer column (10 mm vs 6.5–7 mm), orange (vs white) column margin, and orange (vs white) stelidia. Gastrodia biruensis is also similar to G. selabintanensis Tsukaya & A.Hidayat but differs in having larger flowers (3.2–3.8 × 1.2–1.7 cm vs c. 1.7 × 0.9 cm), labellum much longer than the column by c. 1.6 times (vs 1.1–1.3), yellowish basal calli (vs pure white), labellum orange in the upper half distal calli (vs yellowish white), orange (vs white) column margin, and orange (vs white) stelidia. [Botany • 2025] Corybas gayoensis (Orchidaceae) • A New narrow endemic Orchid from Sumatra, Indonesia [Flora of Gayo Plateau II]

Abstract
A new species, Corybas gayoensis is described here as endemic to the northern part of Sumatra. The new species is similar to Corybas pictus, but differs in having acuminate dorsal sepals with dentate upper margin, labellum with light red and concave central part, and a long fimbriate margin. The species is assessed as Critically Endangered due to its narrow distribution, continuous decline of population and habitat degradation. Detailed descriptions, illustrations, photographs, and discussion are given.

Abstract
A new species of Begonia is described from lowland northern Sumatra, Indonesia named Begonia elegantifolia Ritonga, Girm. & Mustaqim. The species belongs to section Platycentrum and is unique from other species in having a combination of narrowly lanceolate leaves and flowers with six tepals. The new species is the first species in sect. Platycentrum that posseses staminate flowers with six tepals. Detailed description, diagnoses and photographs are given.

[Botany • 2025] Rigiolepis bungeputih (Ericaceae: Vaccinieae) • A New Species from northern Gayo Plateau, Sumatra, Indonesia

Abstract
Rigiolepis bungeputih Mustaqim & M.N.Tamayo, a close relative of blueberries (Vaccinium L.) and endemic to the tropical evergreen mossy rainforest of northern Gayo Plateau, Sumatra, Indonesia, is here described. It closely resembles R. gayoensis Mustaqim, M.N.Tamayo & P.W.Fritsch, but differs by having a glabrous stem, larger leaves, glabrous pedicels, white corollas, and larger stamens. Photographs, an illustration, and a detailed morphological description are included. Rigiolepis bungeputih represents the second endemic Rigiolepis Hook.f. species known from the island of Sumatra. This discovery raises the number of Rigiolepis species found in this island to four. A discussion on the ovary character of Rigiolepis in view of ongoing molecular studies is presented.

Type: INDONESIA: Sumatra Island, Aceh Province, AcehTengah Regency, Jagong Jeget Subdistrict, ..., 2310 m elevation, 15 June 2023,W.A. Mustaqim 2719 (holotype: LGS; isotype: UIDEP).

Diagnosis: Rigiolepis bungeputih closely resembles R. gayoensis but differs by having a glabrous stem (vs pubescent),larger leaves (60–72 × 35–40 vs 46–55 × 22–25 mm), glabrouspedicels (vs pubescent on 1/2 to 3/5 of pedicel length), whitecorollas (vs red), and larger stamens (1.8–2.1 vs 1.5–1.7 mm) 

Etymology: The epithet “bungeputih” is derived from the Gayonese words “bunge” (flowers) and “putih” (white), in reference to the white corolla of the species.

Abstract
Two new species of Begonia were discovered during an expedition to Mount Bukit Raya, the highest peak in Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. Full descriptions with colour plates and distribution map are provided.

Begonia bukitrayaensis Randi & Mustaqim, sp. nov.

Diagnosis:—Begonia bukitrayaensis is similar to Begonia chakensis S.Julia & C.Y.Ling (2015: 108) in its creeping habit and ovate, asymmetric leaves, but differs in having glabrous vegetative parts except for stiff red bristle-like trichomes between the veins on the adaxial leaf surface (vs. densely pilose stems, petioles, and abaxial veins in B. chakensis). The leaves of B. bukitrayaensis have red-dentate margins and a rounded to slightly cordate base (vs. minutely serrate margins and an acute or slightly cordate base). The stipules are falcate with recurved margins and a cuspidate apex (vs. broadly ovate, serrate, and acute). Male flowers bear fewer stamens (25–28 vs. 39–40).

Diagnosis:—Begonia kalimantana resembles Begonia eutricha Sands (1997: 434) in erect habit with distichous and falcate leaves, however it can be easily distinguished by striking consistent color pattern, dark olive green with shiny silvery white stripe along the midrib (vs. plain green), lamina surface hirtellous (vs. densely hispid); shorter male flower pedicels 8–12 mm long (vs. 22–24 mm long); ovary reddish and glabrous (vs. ovary white tinged with pink, and covered with soft white erect hairs), wings margin glabrous (vs. ciliate), and longer ovary beaked 3–5 mm long (vs. 1 mm long).

Abstract
A new species of Bulbophyllum section Macrocaulia named Bulbophyllum bukitrayaense Yudistira & Mustaqim is described from the mid-montane forest zone of Mount Bukit Raya, Kalimantan Barat Province. It is similar to Bulbophyllum scabrum but differs in having the lower surface of the labellum with two times approaching margin undulation. The new species also have coarsely rugose upper ¼ surface of the labellum (vs smooth) and ovary covered by papillose-muriculate indumentum (vs glabrous). A full description, notes, and fresh photograph plates are given.

Bulbophyllum bonjolianum Yudistira, Candra & Mustaqim, a member of section Macrocaulia, is described here based on a specimen collected from the mountains of West Sumatra. It is similar to B. tristriatum Carr. and B. pyridion J.J.Verm. but differs in the morphology of the dorsal sepal, petal and labellum. A key to B. bonjolianum and morphologically similar species is presented.

Bulbophyllum bonjolianum Yudistira, Candra & Mustaqim, sp. nov.

Bulbophyllum bonjolianum is morphologically similar to B. tristriatum Carr. and B. pyridion J.J.Verm., but differs in the dorsal sepals abruptly tapering from the middle upwards (vs gradually narrowing), pentagonal petal (vs elliptic-(ob)-ovate in B. tristriatum and elliptic in B. pyridion), and longer labellum (6.8–7 mm vs 3.5–5 mm in B. tristriatum and c. 3.2 mm long in B. pyridion) with the proximal adaxial surface coarsely papillose (vs smooth). The species is also similar to the Peninsular Malaysian species B. hodgsonii M.R.Hend., but the new species differs in its dorsal sepals abruptly tapering from the middle upwards (vs gradually narrowing), lateral sepals with 3 veins (vs 5), and the coarsely papillose adaxial surface of the labellum in the lower proximal part (vs smooth).

Etymology. The species is named in honour of Tuanku Imam Bonjol, a national hero of Indonesia from West Sumatra Province.

Abstract
Impatiens is a diverse genus within the Balsaminaceae family, comprising over 1,120 species. The northern Gayo Plateau of Sumatra, an island in Southeast Asia, is renowned for its rich Impatiens diversity. In this paper, we described and illustrated a new species named Impatiens bungeusing from this area. This species is most similar to Impatiens vitellina Grey-Wilson but differs in having the distinct abaxial leaf venation in a dry state (vs obscure), lateral sepals falcate-oblong (vs narrowly lanceolate), lower sepals with U-shaped spur (vs straight), broadly ovate dorsal petal (vs ovate), and ovate sub-rhomboidal upper lateral united petals (vs oblong). This discovery brings the total number of known Impatiens species in Sumatra to forty-eight.

Impatiens bungeusing Mustaqim & Ruchis., sp. nov. 

Type: Indonesia. Aceh Province: Aceh Tengah Regency, Jagong Jeget, ..., 2100 m asl, 11 January 2023, Mustaqim 2577 (holotype: LGS; isotype: MEDA). 

Diagnosis: Impatiens bungeusing is similar to Impatiens vitellina Grey-Wilson. However, it differs in having the distinct abaxial leaf venation in a dry state (vs obscure), flowers with lower sepal having U-shaped spur (vs straight), broadly ovate dorsal petal (vs ovate), and ovate sub-rhomboidal upper lateral united petals (vs oblong) (Table 1).


Etymology: The specific epithet "bungeusing" is derived from the Gayo language. "Bunge" means flower, and "using" means yellow, reflecting the plant's bright yellow flowers.

[Botany • 2023] Schoenorchis kembangleutik (Orchidaceae: Aeridinae) • A New Species from West Java, Indonesia

Abstract 
Schoenorchis kembangleutik Yudistira & Mustaqim described here as new to science is an orchid species currently considered endemic to West Java. It is similar to S. pachyachris (J.J.Sm.) J.J.Sm. from Sumatra and Java but differs in having flowers with midlobe of labellum orbicular (vs oblong) with horizontal and rounded (vs pointing upwards and tapering to a point) apex, the labellum side lobes white, uncinate and retrorse at the apex (vs yellow, straight and erect at apex), and in having shorter spurs with straight base (2 vs 4 mm long, with geniculate base). A morphological description, notes on distribution, habitat and ecology, an illustration, photographs and a key to the five species of Schoenorchis of Java are provided.
