[Herpetology • 2025] Cnemaspis brahmaputra • A New Day Gecko of the Cnemaspis podihuna clade (Reptilia: Gekkonidae) from Northeast India

Abstract 
We describe a new species of Cnemaspis from Assam, a valley of an antecedent river, the Brahmaputra, in northeastern India that belongs to the C. podihuna species group. The new species is the second Cnemaspis reported from the mainland Indian subcontinent, representing the entire podihuna clade. It is small (SVL 30.8–35.7 mm) and diurnal. The new species is genetically and morphologically allied to C. assamensis in northeast India, and also morphologically allied to the members of the C. podihuna group in Sri Lanka, especially to C. molligodai and C. manoae, but is distinguished by its larger body size but with lower number of midbody scale rows, higher number of miventrals and ventral scale rows across the belly, no tubercles on lower flanks, three enlarged rows of thigh scales parallel to the enlarged femoral scale row, and fewer poreless scales separating precloacal and femoral pore scales in males. The new species is also genetically divergent from C. assamensis by p-distances of 6.0–7.2% and from Sri Lankan congeners by 21.2–24.8% in the mitochondrial ND2 gene. With this new species, only two species of Cnemaspis are now known from the podihuna clade in India, but additional species likely remain unrecognized.

Diagnosis. A diminutive, rupicolous Cnemaspis with adult SVL 30.8–35.7 mm; dorsal scales homogeneous, small granular scales, intermixed with slightly large, randomly arranged smooth scales; enlarged tubercles absent on dorsum; scales on gular, throat, pectoral, and abdomen smooth; median subcaudals smooth, enlarged, slightly semicircular, subimbricate; 26–27 interorbital scales; 7–9 supralabials up to midorbital position, 11–13 up to the angle of jaw; 8–12 infralabials; two pairs of postmentals, inner pair larger, separated by single hexagonal intermediate scale; 83–87 scale rows at midbody, 21–25 ventral scales rows across the belly; 127–131 paravertebral granules, 130–138 midventral scales; similar scales on flanks; four or five spine-like tubercles on lateral body, but absent in lower flanks; 19 subdigital lamellae under fourth toe; males with six or seven precloacal pores and 12 femoral pores (on each thigh) separated by four enlarged poreless scales; dorsal scales on brachium and forearm smooth, granular; ventral scales of thigh with three rows of enlarged scales parallel to femoral scales; ventral scales on tail base not enlarged; a single pair of postcloacal spur on tail base.

Etymology. The specific epithet is an invariable noun in apposition and refers to the antecedent river, ‘Brahmaputra’, which flows near the type locality. Brahmaputra (in the Sanskrit language) is a singular possessive noun with Brahma (=a name of the Hindu god, referred to as "the creator") and putra (=son, referred to here as offspring), thus the offspring of the creator. Brahmaputra River (3,969 km) flows through China, northeast India, and Bangladesh, and is one of the top ten largest rivers by discharge (Sarma 2004)—English name: Brahmaputra day gecko

[Herpetology • 2019] Cnemaspis tanintharyi & C. thayawthadangyi • The Discovery of Rock Geckos Cnemaspis Strauch, 1887 (Squamata: Gekkonidae) in the Tanintharyi Region, Myanmar with the Description of Two New Species

 Abstract   
We report the first occurrence of the Asian Rock Gecko genus Cnemaspis Strauch, 1887 from mainland Myanmar based on a series of specimens recently collected from the Tanintharyi Region. These records come from several localities in the Tanintharyi Region and fill a significant sampling gap for the genus. Molecular phylogenetic analyses using the mitochondrial gene ND2 identify two distinct clades, the first includes Cnemaspis siamensis of the Southeast Asian Cnemaspis group and the second includes two new species belonging to the South Asian Cnemaspis kandiana group. These two species are morphologically distinct and are distinguished from all other members in the C. kandiana group by a combination of character states. The first species, Cnemaspis tanintharyi sp. nov. occurs on the mainland in southern Tanintharyi and is distinguished from all congeners by the possession of keeled pectoral scales; smooth ventral scales and abdominal scales; 2–4 precloacal pores; 4–5 femoral pores on each leg; smooth subcaudal scales with the median row enlarged; coloration of the gular region beige, dark gray-brown with dark blue hueing towards throat; 15–18 subdigital lamellae on the 4th toe; and 21–23 ventral scales at midbody. The other, Cnemaspis thayawthadangyi sp. nov. is known only from the island group of Thayawthadangyi, in the Myeik Archipelago and is distinguished from all congeners by the possession of keeled pectoral scales; keeled ventral scales and abdominal scales; three precloacal pores; four femoral pores on each leg; smooth subcaudal scales, scales on median row enlarged; coloration of the gular region silver with dark-gray irregularly shaped streaks; 16–18 subdigital lamellae on the 4th toe; and 18–20 ventral scales at midbody. In addition, we address the taxonomic status of populations referred to as C. kandiana (a species now restricted to Sri Lanka) found in peninsular Thailand and provisionally assign them as C. cf. tanintharyi sp. nov. until further analysis can be conducted. Finally, we briefly discuss the biogeography of the South Asian clade of Cnemaspis.

[Herpetology • 2025] Cnemaspis enneaporus • Another New Karst-dwelling Rock Gecko in the Cnemaspis siamensis group (Reptilia: Gekkonidae) from Kanchanaburi Province, western Thailand

 Abstract
A new species of the Cnemaspis siamensis group is described from Wang Khrachae District, Kanchanaburi Province, western Thailand based on morphological and molecular data. The new species, Cnemaspis enneaporus Rujirawan, Aksornneam & Aowphol, sp. nov., is distinguished from other species in the C. siamensis group by having the combination of SVL 42.2 mm in adult male (n = 1), 43.7 mm in adult female (n = 1); eight supralabials; seven or eight infralabials; ventral scales smooth; nine continuous precloacal pores in male; 17 or 18 paravertebral tubercles linearly arranged; tubercles on lower flanks present; lateral caudal furrows present; no caudal tubercles in the lateral furrows; ventrolateral caudal tubercles present on original portion of tail; caudal tubercles not encircling tail; subcaudals smooth; no enlarged median subcaudal row; two postcloacal tubercles on each side of tail; no shield-like subtibial scales; subtibial scales smooth; no enlarged submetatarsal scales; 26–28 subdigital lamellae on the fourth toe; sexually dimorphic for dorsal and ventral colour pattern; prescapular marking absent; gular marking absent; and yellow colouration in life on all ventral surfaces of head, body and tail in adult male. Phylogenetically, the new species is recovered as the sister taxon to C. huaseesom, but the two species are separated by 8.3–9.4% uncorrected pairwise genetic divergences in the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 gene and flanking tRNAs.

Etymology. The species epithet enneaporus is derived from ennea (G.) for nine and porus (L.) for pore in reference to the male holotype of the new species having nine precloacal pores.

Suggested common name: Sai Yok Rock Gecko (English), Jing Jok Niew Yao Sai Yok ,จิ้งจกนิ้วยาวไทรโยค (Thai).

[Herpetology • 2024] Cnemaspis kanyakumariensis & C. geethaiyerae • Two New Species of South Asian Cnemaspis Strauch, 1887 (Squamata: Gekkonidae) from the southern tip of the Western Ghats, India

ABSTRACT
We describe two new small-bodied species of South Asian Cnemaspis from Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu State, India. The two new species [Cnemaspis kanyakumariensis and Cnemaspis geethaiyerae] are sister taxa, forming a well-supported, previously unsampled clade of South Asian Cnemaspis that we name the kanyakumariensis clade. This new clade is recovered with weak support as the sister taxon to the goaensis clade. Both the new species together can be easily distinguished from all other peninsular Indian clades by a combination of non-overlapping morphological characters such as small size with snout to vent length < 40 mm, femoral pores only present in males, presence of spine-like tubercles on flanks, and condition of the subcaudals. They can also be distinguished from each other by several characters such as the number of dorsal tubercles around the body, short vs long spine-like tubercles on flank, and the arrangement of keeled subcaudal scales. They also differ by uncorrected pairwise sequence divergence of 10.2 and 2.9% for ND2 and 16S, respectively. This work reveals that even the low-elevation coastal hills of southern India have ancient, endemic lineages and require protection.

[Herpetology • 2024] Cnemaspis puterisantubongae • A New sandstone-dwelling Species of Genus Cnemaspis (Sauria: Gekkonidae) from Gunung Santubong National Park, southwestern Sarawak, Malaysia

Abstract
A newly discovered sandstone-dwelling species of the rock gecko, genus Cnemaspis, is described from Santubong National Park, 25 km north of Kuching, southwestern Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Molecular phylogenetic analysis confirmed that Cnemaspis puterisantubongae sp. nov. is closely related to other Cnemaspis species in southwestern Sarawak, except for C. kendallii, although these relationships remain unclear. The new species differs from closely related species in having a moderate snout–vent length of up to 66.7 mm; 10–14 precloacal pores in males; 9–14 obviously-convex precloacal pore-bearing scales in females; enlarged, smooth, flat median subcaudal scales; sharp-edged, broad black markings on the trunk dorsum; and a black–gray banding pattern on the posterior part of the original tail, with white median subcaudal scales in males. This discovery of this new species from Santubong National Park, which is highly accessible due to its proximity to Kuching, highlights the need for extensive inventory surveys throughout the national parks of Sarawak.

 The type localities of the nigridia group of the Bornean Cnemaspis (thus not shown for C. lagang and C. kendallii) and phylogenetic relationship of its members. The map is tilted 45° counterclockwise. Igneous and sedimentary bases within Sarawak were shown in light and dark gray, respectively. Support of the internal branches of the maximum likelihood tree was evaluated by ultrafast bootstrap/SH-aLRT values, and asterisks indicate those higher than 95/95. The black, brown, and gray bands under the tips of the tree indicate granite, sandstone, and limestone dwelling species, respectively.

Etymology. The generic name is feminine in gender. The specific epithet puterisantubongae is derived from Puteri (= princess) Santubong, who is one of two princesses appearing in a local myth. These princesses are said to have descended from the celestial realm to a human village; their remarkable beauty and weaving skills are represented in the species by yellow ocher body colouration, distinct bold black marks, and pale/faint yellow spots in both sexes. Santubong is also the name of the promontory for which the Santubong National Park is named.

[Herpetology • 2024] Cnemaspis agamalaiensis, C. anuradhae, ... • Five New Species of the Cnemaspis beddomei clade (Squamata: Gekkonidae) from High Elevation, Evergreen Forests of the Southern Western Ghats, India

Abstract
We describe five new species allied to Cnemaspis beddomei from the Southern Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu, India using morphological data and mitochondrial sequence divergence. The new species are members of the beddomei and anamudiensis subclades within the beddomei clade and are from boulder habitats in evergreen forests in Tenkasi (Cnemaspis tenkasiensis sp. nov.), and the Agamalai (C. agamalaiensis sp. nov.), Anaimalai (C. anaimalaiensis sp. nov. and C. valparaiensis sp. nov.) and Palani Hills (C. anuradhae sp. nov.). The new species can be distinguished from other members of the beddomei clade and each other by a combination of non-overlapping morphological characters including body size, distinct colouration in males, the number or arrangement of dorsal tubercles around the body and paravertebral tubercles, the number of ventral scales across midbody and longitudinal scales from mental to cloaca, tail tuberculation and arrangement of subcaudal scales, besides uncorrected pairwise ND2 and 16S sequence divergence of ≥ 5.4 % and ≥ 2.3 %. The beddomei clade is another example of extreme micro-endemism, all 23 known species are evergreen forest dwellers and are each known from just one or a few closely spaced localities, with three non-sister species known from within one kilometre straight-line distance of each other on the Valparai Plateau, Anaimalai Tiger Reserve. The beddomei subclade is distributed from Agasthyamalai to the Anaimalais while the anamudiensis subclade is restricted to the Anaimalai, Palani and Kannan Devan Hills.

[Herpetology • 2024] Cnemaspis basalticola & C. kalsubaiensis • Two New Species of South Asian Cnemaspis Strauch, 1887 (Squamata: Gekkonidae) from the far northern peaks of the Western Ghats, India

Abstract
We describe two new species of South Asian Cnemaspis from far northern peaks of the Northern Western Ghats of Maharashtra, India. The two new species are the most northernly distributed representatives of the girii clade and are phylogenetically and morphologically allied to C. uttaraghati. The new species are 15.0% divergent from C. uttaraghati in pairwise uncorrected ND2 sequence data, 9.9 % from each other, and over 17.5–18.8% from other members of the girii clade. The two new species can easily be distinguished from most members of the girii clade by a combination of non-overlapping morphological characters such as body size (maximum snout to vent length 35–43 mm), low number of dorsal tubercle rows (6–11), having irregular paravertebral tubercles, and high subdigital lamellae counts; and from each other and C. uttaraghati by the number of midventral scales across belly, the number of subdigital lamellae, and the number of poreless scales separating series of femoral pores. The new species and C. uttaraghati are distributed within 10–25 km of each other, providing an example of extreme micro-endemism in the Northern Western Ghats.

Abstract
We describe two new medium-bodied, nocturnal species of South Asian Cnemaspis from the southern Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu, India in an integrative taxonomic framework. The two new species are phylogenetically and morphologically allied to the wynadensis clade and can be distinguished from other species of the wynadensis clade and each other by a combination of nonoverlapping morphological characters including body size, homogeneous dorsal pholidosis, the number of femoral pores and poreless scales separating these series, the number of ventral scales across the midbody and longitudinal scales from mental to cloaca, the number of dorsal granules around the body; and an uncorrected pairwise ND2 sequence divergence of 8.2–22.9 % (16S 4.2–12.2 %) from all other members in the clade. These are the first members of the wynadensis clade known from south of the Palghat Gap apart from C. bireticulata, a putative junior synonym of C. sisparensis that is likely to be distinct owing to morphological differences and geographic distance. Cnemaspis sanctus sp. nov. is from low coastal hills in Kanyakumari District at the southern tip of the Western Ghats and Cnemaspis persephone sp. nov. is from the Anaimalais, Anaimalai Tiger Reserve. Many more undescribed species of the wynadensis clade and South Asian Cnemaspis are likely to be found across the southern Western Ghats.

Abstract
Two new species allied to Cnemaspis galaxia are described from the eastern slopes of the south Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu, India. Both new species are members of the ornata subclade within the beddomei clade. The two new species can be easily distinguished from all other members of the beddomei clade and each other by a combination of nonoverlapping morphological characters such as small body size, distinct colouration of both sexes, the number of dorsal tubercles around the body, the number or arrangement of paravertebral tubercles, the number of midventral scales across the belly and longitudinal ventral scales from mental to cloaca, besides uncorrected pairwise ND2 and 16S sequence divergence of ≥ 7.4% and ≥ 2.7%. The two new species are distributed from low elevation, deciduous forests of Srivilliputhur, and add to the five previously known endemic vertebrates from Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Tiger Reserve.

 Cnemaspis vangoghi sp. nov.

Etymology: The specific epithet is a patronym for Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh (1853–1890). The colouration of the new species is reminiscent of one of Van Gogh’s most iconic paintings, The Starry Night. Suggested common name is Van Gogh’s starry dwarf gecko.


 Cnemaspis sathuragiriensis sp. nov.

Etymology: The specific epithet is a toponym for the type locality of the new species, Sathuragiri mountain in Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Tiger Reserve (SMTR), Virudhunagar District, Tamil Nadu. Suggested Common name is Sathuragiri dwarf gecko.

Abstract
The girii clade is the most diverse clade of South Asian Cnemaspis in the Northern Western Ghats, including ten valid species. Recent collections of four divergent lineages from southern Maharashtra prompted us to examine the type material of all species in the girii clade, which led to the discovery of numerous errors and discrepancies in the literature. We take this opportunity to provide an updated and expanded morphological dataset including diagnoses and comparisons for all species of the girii clade and to build an almost complete species-level phylogeny including the first ND2 sequences of C. rajgadensis and C. uttaraghati, as well as the four new species described herein (but excluding C. fortis). We describe the four divergent mitochondrial lineages as new species using morphological data, and provide a key to species of the girii clade. Finally, we list some inconsistences in previous publications and data for the girii clade.

[Herpetology • 2023] Cnemaspis fortis • A New dwarf gecko Species (Squamata: Gekkonidae: Cnemaspis) from the northern Western Ghats of India

Abstract 
Based on molecular and morphological data, I describe a new species of the polyphyletic gekkonid genus Cnemaspis Strauch, 1887 from the northern Western Ghats in India. The new species is the second smallest known Indian dwarf gekkonid and belongs to the clade of C. girii sensu Pal et al. (2021). It is genetically distinct from all congeners of the C. girii clade by p-distance ranging from 3.8 to 8.4 % on the 16S rRNA gene. Morphologically, the new species can be distinguished from all congeners by having the following combination of characters: A small species with adult males reaching a maximum SVL 27.0 mm; heterogeneous dorsal pholidosis with 11–12 longitudinal rows of enlarged tubercles; males with 3–4 femoral pores on each thigh, separated medially by 19–24 poreless scales; 63–65 middorsal scales; 136–150 ventral scales; 33–35 midbody scales; 12–14 subdigital lamellae under fourth digit of pes; feebly carinate scales on the neck and chest; and absence of conical or spine-like tubercles on flank.

Cnemaspis fortis sp. nov. 

Etymology. The specific epithet “fortis” is a Latin third-declension adjective in the nominative singular given in feminine, refers to “strong” chosen to highlight the notable behaviour of bravery of the new species in its natural habitat. Suggested vernacular name is “brave dwarf gecko” in English.

Abstract
We describe two new species of Cnemaspis from Alagarkovil, Madurai District and Mekkarai, Shenkottai, Tenkasi, southern India, based on molecular and morphological data. The new species differ from their congeners by genetic divergences of 4.8–16.1% and 14.8–31.6% for the ND2 mitochondrial gene. Two new species belong to the Cnemaspis gracilis and Cnemaspis beddomei clades, respectively. Molecular data for the newly described Cnemaspis aaronbaueri from its type locality is also presented, and its phylogenetic position is established.
