[Botany • 2022] Hoya longlingensis & H. sichuanensis (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae) • Two New Species from Southwestern China

Abstract
Hoya longlingensis (E.F. Huang) and H. sichuanensis E.F. Huang are two new species of Apocynaceae from Southwestern China that are described in this study. Morphologically, the two species resemble H. tamdaoensis Rodda & T.B. Tran and H. lyi H. Lév., respectively. However, H. longlingensis differs from H. tamdaoensis by its elliptic leaves, mid-vein of leaf blades raised adaxially and depressed abaxially, lateral veins 2–4-paired, corolla yellow-green, outer angles of corona convex and spreading outside obviously. While H. sichuanensis differs from H. lyi by its obovate leaves, leaf apex rounded and base cuneate, petioles 1–3.5 cm long and ca. 3 mm in diameter, calyx lobes triangular, and corona whitish.

[Botany • 2026] Hoya nagaensis (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae) • A New Species from Phek District, Nagaland, Northeast India

Summary
Hoya nagaensis (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae), a new species from the state of Nagaland, India is here described and illustrated. The new species has close morphological affinity with H. thomsonii and H. coronaria. It can be clearly distinguished by its densely hairy corolla lobes, both internally and externally; irregular pinkish to reddish-purple spots on the external corolla surface and, though less pronounced, on the inner surface and narrowly elliptic-lanceolate leaves, with smooth surfaces and long acuminate tips. A detailed morphological description, habitat information, preliminary conservation assessment, notes and comparison with closely related species, H. coronaria, H. carnosa, H. spectatissima, H. bella and H. thomsonii are provided.

Etymology. The specific epithet “nagaensis” is dedicated to “Nagaland”, where the new species was discovered. The name honours both the cultural and ecological significance of the locality, reflecting the close relationship between the Naga community and the surrounding forest ecosystem.

[Botany • 2025] Hoya thuhae (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae) • A New Species from central Vietnam and H. lobbii, new record for Vietnam

Abstract
A new species, Hoya thuhae (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae), from lowland areas of central Vietnam, is described. It resembles H. kerrii but may be distinguished by its finely pubescent petioles, puberulous leaf blade, longer peduncle, longer pilose to strigose pedicels, different shape of the calyx lobes, and elliptic corolla segments with apices raised above the central portion. Additionally, H. lobbii, known earlier in NE India, Thailand, and Cambodia, is recorded for Vietnam at first. Data on the ecology, phenology, distribution, and conservation status for both species are provided, together with plates compiled from original color analytical photos.

[Botany • 2025] Hoya biruensis (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae) • A New night-blooming Species of Hoya from Borneo

Abstract
In the present paper, we describe Hoya biruensis, a new species from Borneo, Indonesia, West Kalimantan. It is characterised by a shrubby epiphytic pendulous habit, linear leaves, exceptionally long green peduncles produced at almost every node, and single, night-blooming flowers. We compare it to two morphologically similar species, H. spartioides and H. retrorsa, which are also endemic to Borneo.

[Botany • 2024] Hoya sungwookii (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae) • A New Species from southern Vietnam

Abstract
A new species, Hoya sungwookii, discovered in southern Vietnam near Nha Trang Town (Khanh Hoa Province) is described and illustrated. It belongs to the type section of the genus and is distinguished from the morphologically closest H. oblongacutifolia (= H. graveolens) in glabrous pedicels, smaller flower 1.1–1.4 cm across, greenish ciliate calyx, corolla abaxially light green, small green to dark green corona 4.5–5 mm in diameter, 1.6–1.8 mm tall, small, 2–2.2 mm long, corona segments, and short corona segment inner angle, not exceeding anthers. Additionally, data on ecology, phenology, distribution of newly described species are presented, as well as its evaluated conservation status and color illustrations. Taking into consideration our new data, the genus in Vietnam currently includes 45 species.

Diagnosis. The new species is morphologically closest to Hoya oblongacutifolia, from which it differs in glabrous pedicels, smaller flower 1.1–1.4 cm across, greenish ciliate calyx, corolla abaxially light green, small green to dark green corona 4.5–5 mm in diameter, 1.6–1.8 mm tall, small corona segments, 2–2.2 mm long, and short corona segment inner angle, not exceeding anthers

Etymology. The species is named after Mr. Um Sung Wook, who first found this plant in nature and kindly shared his discovery for our study.

[Botany • 2023] Hoya honglenae (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideaea) • A New Species, and the First Report of H. acuminata and H. phuwuaensis in the Flora of Vietnam

Abstract
Three species of the genus Hoya (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae) are newly reported for the flora of Vietnam. One species, Hoya honglenae, is described and illustrated as new to science, and two species, H. acuminata and H. phuwuaensis, are reported as new national records known earlier, respectively, in Bhutan, Bangladesh, NE India, W China, Myanmar; and NE Thailand. The new species discovered in Phu Quoc Island (Kien Giang Province) morphologically is most close to H. phuwuaensis, but differs in the entire, straight leaf margin, leaves sparsely white speckled adaxially and dirty purple speckled abaxially, smaller yellow flowers, conoid, obtuse, distally up-cured outer angle of corona lobes, and much longer anther appendages. The paper provides morphological descriptions, data on habitat, phenology, distribution, estimated conservation status, taxonomic notes, a list of studied specimens, and color illustrations for all studied species. Taking into consideration our new data, the genus in Vietnam currently includes 44 species.

Abstract
Hoya spectatissima, a new species from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Hoya spectatissima is morphologically similar to H. lyi, but can be easily distinguished from the latter by its succulent leaves that are 2‒4.5 cm long (vs. coriaceous leaves that are up to 9 cm long), corolla that is pink to pale pink (vs. yellowish-white) and corona lobes that are sub-rhombic in top view (vs. ovoid in top view).

Diagnosis: Hoya spectatissima is most similar to H. lyi H.Lév, but differs from the latter by its succulent leaves (vs. coriaceous leaves) that are 2‒4.5 cm in length (vs. up to 9 cm in length) and rounded or rarely obtuse at the apex (vs. mostly acute at the apex), pink to pale pink corolla (vs. yellowish-white corolla) that is densely sericeous adaxially (vs. densely pubescent adaxially), ivory white corona lobes (vs. purple towards the inner angle and ivory white towards the outer angle of corona lobes) that are sub-rhombic in top view (vs. ovoid in top view) and have an acute outer angle (vs. truncate to shallowly concave outer angle).

Distribution and habit: Hoya spectatissima is known from at least two localities in Cangyuan Hsien and Gengma Hsien, Yunnan Province, China. It is a lithophytic liana that climbs on rocks in karst habitat. It is a common species in Guanlong Village, Gengma Hsien, but an occasional species in Menglai Town, Cangyuan Hsien.

Etymology: Hoya spectatissima is named to reflect its beautiful flowers.

[Botany • 2019] Hoya tengchongensis (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae) • A New Species from Yunnan, China

Abstract
Hoya tengchongensis, a new species of Apocynaceae, subfamily Asclepiadoideae from Yunnan, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to Hoya serpens in its creeping habit, bearing small and suborbicular leaves, and adaxially tomentose corolla. However, H. tengchongensis differs from H. serpens in corolla size (ca 7 mm versus ca 12 mm in diam) and corona morphology (corona lobes slightly ascending versus erect).

[Botany • 2022] Marsdenia burmanica (Apocynaceae: Asclepiodoideae) • A New Species from Kachin, Myanmar

Abstract
Marsdenia burmanica Wen B.Xu & J.Y.Shen (Apocynaceae), a new species from Hongga Mountain, Putao County, Kachin State, Myanmar, is described and illustrated. It is similar to M. hainanensis, M. sinensis, and M. tenii, but differs from them by campanulate flowers, fusiform gynostegium exserted from the corolla tube, 2-cleft stigma head, purple corolla and a corona of 2 oval protrusions at the base of the corona. Photographs, line drawing, distribution, comparison with related species, and a conservation assessment are provided for this rarely observed species.

Marsdenia burmanica Wen B.Xu & J.Y.Shen, sp. nov.



   Diagnosis: Marsdenia burmanica is morphologically similar to M. hainanensis, M. sinensis, and M. tenii (Table 1), but differs from M. hainanensis in the fusiform gynostegium, 2-cleft stigma head, purple corolla and 2 oval protrusions; and differs from M. sinensis in the fusiform stigma head, purple corolla and 2 oval protrusions at the corona base; and also differs from M. tenii in dichasial cyme, fusiform gynostegium, purple corolla and 2 oval protrusions.

Distribution & habitat: At present, M. burmanica has only been found in the type locality. It grows in the sunny part of hillsides, at an elevation of ca. 900 m. 

Etymology: The new species found in northern Myanmar, thus the specific epithet “burmanica” was chosen. The Chinese name is “緬甸牛奶菜”.

[Botany • 2020] Hoya lamthanhiae (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideaea) • A New Species from southern Vietnam

Hoya lamthanhiae V.T. Pham & Kloppenb. is described and illustrated. The molecular data is provided; this species was found in Dak Lak province, southern Vietnam. Diagnostic features of the new species are a milky latex lithophytic vine and pure white with red-purple centre flowers. The described species clearly differs from closely related H. hainanensis in number of characters: a leaf blade shortly attenuated and wavy margins at the base, a hairy abaxial leaf surface, a bigger calyx with few sparse hairs or glabrous, a bigger corolla with acute lobe, shorter pollinia, as well as molecular characters.

Hoya lamthanhiae V.T. Pham & Kloppenb., sp. nov.

Diagnostic morphology characters: Described species is most closely related to Hoya hainanensis Merr. (1923: 263) from Hainan, sometimes regarded as a synonym of H. ovalifolia Wight & Arn. (Li et al., 1995). However, type specimens of H. ovalifolia accessed from E and NY virtual herbariums and a description from Wight (1834: 37) are apparently quite different. In contrast, leaf form and habit of Hhainanensis is similar to the new species. The examination by the second author of type specimens of H. hainanensis deposited at UC and observations of other types at A, MO and US virtual herbariums, reveal the following differences from our new species; leaf blade shortly attenuate and wavy margins at base, hairy abaxial leaf surface, bigger calyx with few sparse hairs or glabrous, bigger corolla with acute lobe, as well as shorter pollinia as it is presented in Table 3.

Distribution: The species is currently known only from the lone type locality in Dak Lak province, southern Vietnam. 

Habitat and ecology: Hoya lamthanhiae occurs in primarily evergreen broad-leaved forests, often on granite outcrops along streams at an elevation of approximately 800 m a.s.l. 

Etymology: Species is named after its discoverer - Mrs. Lam Thi Ngoc Thanh. 
Vernacular name: Vietnamese: Cẩm cù lâm thành.

Etymology: The species is named after the plant discoverer Mrs Nguyen Thuy Hanh.

Distribution: Lowland coastal areas of Quang Tri (Hai Lang distr.) and Khanh Hoa (vicinities of Nha Trang city) provinces in central Vietnam.

Ecology and phenology: Hoya hanhiae was observed as an epiphytic creeping vine on large old trees in secondary tropical evergreen seasonal broad-leaved lowland swamp forest on sandy soil at elevation 10–50 m a.s.l., near sea shore. The dominating trees and shrubs in habitats of H. hanhiae were Uvaria cordata, Cereus repandus, Tetracera sarmentosa, Barringtonia acutangula, Sterculia lanceolata, Salacia wrightii, Syzygium bullockii, Memecylon umbellatum, Carallia brachiata, Gluta wrayi, Acronychia pedunculata, Fagraea fragrans, Garcinia sp. and Lithocarpus sp. Flowering was sporadically observed from June to August. Flowers open late afternoon and close in the morning the following day, caducous in 3–4 days. Fruits were seen in August.

[Botany • 2021] Hoya batutikarensis • One New Species and A New Record of Hoya (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae) from Sulawesi, Indonesia

Abstract
One new species of Hoya from Indonesia, Hoya batutikarensis, is described and illustrated. It is similar to H. camphorifolia but it has unusual corona lobes, each lobe has a spreading process at base and an apical triangular process, while the corona of H. camphorifolia has simple navicular lobes. Hoya ischnopus, a species so far only known to occur in New Guinea, is newly recorded in Sulawesi, considerably extending its distribution area.

[Botany • 2021] Hoya pyrifolia (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae) • A New Species from south-western Yunnan, China

Abstract
Hoya pyrifolia, a new species of Apocynaceae from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Results from phylogenetic analyses, based on combined DNA fragments of the nuclear ribosomal external transcribed spacer (ETS), intergeneric transcribed spacer (ITS) and three plastid DNA fragments (matK, psbA-trnH and trnT-trnL), showed that the new species was nested within a clade, including Hoya species distributed in the subtropical foothills of the Himalayas and the Tibet-Sichuan Plateau. Morphologically, the new species can be distinguished from its close relatives by its pyriform and slightly pubescent leaves, as well as the 4-flowered inflorescences.

Diagnosis: The species is morphologically most similar to H. engleriana, but differs by its leaves which are pyriform and 10–14 mm long (vs. narrowly oblong and 20–25 mm long), its 4-flowered inflorescences (vs. 5–7-flowered), its calyx lobes ca. 4 mm long (vs. 1.5–2 mm long) and the triangular corolla (vs. narrowly oblong to oblong-triangular).

Etymology: Hoya pyrifolia is named for its pyriform leaf, which is a significant feature that can be used to distinguish the species from its close relatives.

Distribution and habitat: The species is endemic to Gaoligong Mountain, distributed in Longling and Yingjiang Counties in Yunnan Province. It is an epiphyte on tree trunks in the mid-montane evergreen forests at an elevation from 1850 m to 2150 m.
