Summary
The molecular phylogeny of specimens from the Philothamnus heterodermus species group in West and Central Africa reveals important unrecognized specific diversity. In West Africa, four species are present: P. heterodermus, P. bellii, P. pobeguini and one cryptic species previously confused with P. carinatus. In Central Africa, five species are present: P. heterodermus, P. carinatus, P. ruandae and two cryptic species, one previously confused with P. carinatus, the second one with P. heterodermus. Here we describe two of these three cryptic species: Philothamnus brunneus sp. nov. from the Guinean rainforest of West Africa and Philothamnus mayombensis sp. nov. from the rainforest of the Mayombe mountains in Congo-Brazzaville and Congo-Kinshasa.

Résumé – Une phylogénie moléculaire de spécimens du groupe Philothamnus heterodermus en Afrique occidentale et centrale permet de mettre en évidence une importante diversité spécifique méconnue. En Afrique occidentale, quatre espèces sont présentes : P. heterodermus, P. bellii, P. pobeguini et une espèce cryptique précédemment confondue avec P. carinatus. En Afrique centrale, cinq espèces sont présentes : P. heterodermus, P. carinatus, P. ruandae et deux espèces cryptiques, l’une précédemment confondue avec P. heterodermus et l’autre avec P. carinatus. Deux de ces trois espèces cryptiques sont ici décrites : Philothamnus brunneus sp. nov. de forêt guinéenne d’Afrique occidentale et Philothamnus mayombensis sp. nov. du massif du Mayombe au Congo-Brazzaville et au Congo-Kinshasa.
