Malaxis Solander in Swartz (1788: 119; Orchidaceae, Malaxideae) consists of more than 300 species with a in tropical, subtropical and temperate areas (Cribb 2005, Germán et al. 2008). The species prefer terrestrial, epiphytic and occasionally montane heteromorphic habitats and exhibit great morphological and ecological diversity, but the genus is polyphyletic and controversial in its circumscription (Suyal 2020, Kumar et al. 2021). Based on morphological and molecular phylogenetic approaches, researchers have accepted several genera after nearly two centuries of study and have restored Malaxis monophyllos (Linneaus, 1753: 947) Swartz (1800: 234) in the genus Malaxis (Pridgeon et al. 2006, Chenet al. 2009). Malaxis monophyllos is the only species of Malaxis in the Flora of China (Chen et al. 2009). In 2014, a new species was published, Malaxis malipoensis Meng, Hu & Xing (2014), from Malipo, Yunnan Province.
In 2021, during a field trip to Neixiang County, Henan Province, we discovered some wild orchids that resemble M. malipoensis, but they differ in several morphological features. Therefore, we describe this as a new species. A specimen was deposited in the Herbarium of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University (FAFU).
