[Paleontology • 2026] Qianjiangsaurus changshengi • First Report of a Hollow Cranial Crest in an Early-Diverging Duck-Billed Dinosaur, with Implications for Convergent Evolution of Acoustic Signaling

Abstract
Cranial crests have evolved multiple times in the evolutionary history of vertebrates, serving primarily for visual display. In duck-billed lambeosaurines, one of the most successful dinosaur clades of the Late Cretaceous, the cranial crest became hollow along the paired premaxillae and nasals, and was secondarily selected as a resonating structure atop the skull roof, facilitating acoustic signaling. Here we report the first instance of a hollow supracranial crest in a non-lambeosaurine ornithopod dinosaur, the early-branching hadrosauroid Qianjiangsaurus changshengi, where the paired accessory endonasal cavities just above the nasal cavity proper occur following the dorsoventral thickening of the nasals. This novel nasal cavity configuration is associated with the helmet-like hollow supracranial crest solely formed by the nasals. Comparative resonance modeling suggests that the nasal cavity of Q. changshengi could amplify low-frequency vocalizations similar to those of late-branching lambeosaurines. Seven analogous skull features (including the hollow supracranial crest) and similar low-frequency acoustic capabilities of nasal cavities between Q. changshengi and late-branching lambeosaurines reveal a striking morphological and functional convergence that would likely facilitate safer, more efficient social communication among hadrosauroids. This convergence can be explained by adaptive evolution under similar selection pressures, combined with developmental constraints due to gene pleiotropy.

Simple Summary: Convergent evolution is a peculiar biological process in which distinct taxa or lineages independently evolve analogous features, structures and functions, to adapt to similar necessities. Here we present a classic instance of morphological and functional convergence of the hollow cranial crest among hadrosauroid dinosaurs, based on an excellently preserved skull of the early-branching hadrosauroid Qianjiangsaurus changshengi newly recovered from southwest China, as well as comparative resonant frequency evaluations of its unique endonasal (‘within the nasal bone’) cavities using CT scans and mathematic calculations. The overgrown nasal crest with a novel internal structure in Q. changshengi is morphologically comparable to but structurally non-homologous with the greatly developed hollow supracranial ornamentation and elongate nasal passages seen in lambeosaurines, and thus hugely changes our notions on the cranial evolution of late-branching ornithopod dinosaurs.

[Ornithology • 2025] Tinamus resonans • A New Species of Tinamus (Aves: Tinamiformes) from the western Amazon, Brazil

Abstract
We describe Tinamus resonans sp. nov., a new species of tinamou from the montane forests of the Serra do Divisor, western Amazonia, Brazil. The species is distinguished by a unique combination of plumage pattern, vocal repertoire, and ecological characteristics, including a conspicuous dark slate facial mask, vivid rufous-cinnamon underparts, and a uniform brownish-gray back. Its vocalizations are remarkable, consisting of long and powerful songs that echo strikingly across the steep montane slopes, producing a characteristic resonant effect. The species was documented exclusively at higher elevations within a transitional zone between submontane and stunted forests, where the understory is densely structured by root mats. A preliminary population estimate, based on field detections and spatial extrapolation, suggests approximately 2,106 individuals restricted to the Serra do Divisor massif. Although no immediate anthropogenic pressures were observed within its range, the species may be highly vulnerable to climate change and to proposed infrastructure projects that threaten the integrity of this federally protected region. The discovery of T. resonans highlights the biological uniqueness of the Serra do Divisor, reinforces its status as a center of montane endemism, and underscores the critical importance of maintaining its long-term conservation.

Diagnosis: This species differs from all other Tinamidae by presenting, at least in females (the three individuals whose sex could be determined were female), a distinctive dark slate-colored crown, which extends into a prominent stripe down the hindneck and into the post-ocular region, forming a conspicuous facial mask (Fig. 1 and 2). The ferruginous  coloration  of  the  breast  places  it  near  the T.  variegatus/brevirostris  group,  from  which  it  is  readily distinguished by its uniform brownish-gray dorsum lacking any barring, a condition otherwise shared only with T. soui. It can be further separated from T. soui by its ferruginous breast, neck, and cheeks and the presence of white on the lower belly. Its vocalization is unique and therefore diagnostic among the vocalizations attributed to other Tinamidae. As described below, it is distinguished by its overall structure and note modulation.

Etymology: From Latin, resonans is the present participle of the verb resonare (“to resound,” “to echo”), used here in its adjectival sense meaning “resounding” or “echoing.” The verb is composed of the prefix re- (“again” or “back”) and the root sonare (“to sound”), which derives from the noun sonus (“sound”). The name refers to the striking echoing effect of the species’ song, which reverberates across the steep montane slopes of its habitat as a result of strong acoustic diffusion. 
The common name “sururina” is an onomatopoeic term used by local riverine people to refer to ground-dwelling tinamous with modulated songs and is commonly applied to several species in the region, including Tinamus soui and T. variegatus. The addition of “-da-serra” (“from the mountains”) highlights the distinct identity and montane habitat of this species, setting it apart from other sympatric taxa.

[Mammalogy • 2021] Dendrohyrax interfluvialis • A New Species of Tree Hyrax (Hyracoidea: Procaviidae) from West Africa and the Significance of the Niger–Volta Interfluvium in Mammalian Biogeography

Abstract
Tree hyraxes (Dendrohyrax) are one of only three genera currently recognized in Procaviidae, the only extant family in the mammalian order Hyracoidea. Their taxonomy and natural history have received little attention in recent decades. All tree hyrax populations of Guineo-Congolian forests of Africa are currently treated as a single species, Dendrohyrax dorsalis, the western tree hyrax, but many other groups of mammals distributed across this large biome have been shown to consist of several different species, each restricted to a distinct biogeographical region. We analysed variation in loud-call structure, pelage colour, skull morphometrics and mitochondrial genomes in populations across much of the range of D. dorsalis. This integrative approach uncovered considerable cryptic variation. The population found between the Niger and Volta Rivers in West Africa is particularly distinctive, and we describe it herein as a new species. Our study highlights the need to revise the taxonomy of the genus Dendrohyrax in light of modern systematics and current understanding of its distribution. It also adds to a growing body of evidence that the Niger–Volta interfluvium has a distinct meso-mammal fauna. Unfortunately, the fauna of this region is under major threat and warrants much greater conservation attention.

A new study in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society co-authored by Yale anthropologist Eric Sargis finds that the barking hyraxes are a separate species from their shrieking neighbors. The newly described species, Dendrohyrax interfluvialis, populates the wet and dry forests that lie between the two rivers in coastal regions of southeastern Ghana, southern Togo and Benin, and southwestern Nigeria.

[Herpetology • 2020] Leucostethus bilsa • A New Species of Leucostethus (Anura: Dendrobatidae) from the Cordillera Mache-Chindul in northwestern Ecuador, with comments on similar Colostethus and Hyloxalus

Abstract
We describe a new species of dendrobatid frog, Leucostethus bilsa sp. nov., using molecular, morphological, and acoustic evidence. We also comment on the taxonomic status of four similar Hyloxalus and Colostethus. We provide an updated phylogeny of Leucostethus that corroborates previous hypotheses of relationships of nine species. Phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial (i.e., 7095 bp of combined data from NADH1, NAHD2, cytochrome c oxidase I, cytochrome b and 12S-16S rRNA) and seven nuclear genes (i.e., 4739 bp) indicate a close relationship of L. bilsa to an undescribed species from Gorgona Island, Colombia, both of which apparently diverged in the Pliocene about 3 million years ago with about 6.25% (i.e., 146/2335 bp) differences for the section of 12S-16S mitochondrial fragment. Leucostethus bilsa is diurnal and riparian, characterized by distinctive bright mustard-yellow flash marks in the axillar and groin regions, posterior belly, and in the hindlimbs, the presence of dark gray lower labial stripe or marks, sexual dimorphism in ventral pattern, and by having male uniparental care. We describe its osteology and the male advertisement call, which is a series of peep notes. Osteological microCT images of representatives of each of the Colostethinae genera reveal a number of intriguing characters that may prove to be useful in phylogenetic studies. In terms of its distribution, Leucostethus bilsa is currently known only from a very small area within the Reserva Biológica Bilsa, located within the Cordillera Mache-Chindul in the Chocoan region of northwestern Ecuador, which was a Pliocene-Pleistocene refugium. This region is highly threatened with habitat degradation and remains as the last surviving refuge for a forest community known for a high proportion of endemic species of both flora and fauna.

[Herpetology • 2020] Adenomera guarayoHiding in Plain Sight: A Fourth New Cryptic Species of the Adenomera andreae Clade (Anura: Leptodactylidae) from Southwestern Amazonia

 Abstract  
We describe a new species of Adenomera from southwestern Amazonia. The new species corresponds to one of the acoustic patterns and morphotypes from Tambopata National Reserve (Adenomera “Forest Call II”), which was associated with the candidate species identified via molecular data as Adenomera sp. C in the phylogeny of the genus. The new species is distinguished from all congeners, except A. phonotriccus, by a unique advertisement call: calls are composed of complete pulses, i.e., separated by silent gaps, whereas those of remaining Adenomera species are composed of incomplete pulses (partly fused) or nonpulsed calls. The new species occurs in southeastern Peru and north central Bolivia, with two sympatric records with A. chicomendesi. The taxonomic status of two candidate species (sp. D and sp. T) of the A. andreae clade in southwestern Amazonia still needs to be addressed by the acquisition of additional phenotypic and molecular data.

[Ornithology • 2020] Untangling Cryptic Diversity in the High Andes: Revision of the Scytalopus [magellanicus] complex (Rhinocryptidae) in Peru reveals Three New Species

Abstract
Tropical mountains feature marked species turnover along elevational gradients and across complex topography, resulting in great concentrations of avian biodiversity. In these landscapes, particularly among morphologically conserved and difficult to observe avian groups, species limits still require clarification. One such lineage is Scytalopus tapaculos, which are among the morphologically most conserved birds. Attention to their distinctive vocal repertoires and phylogenetic relationships has resulted in a proliferation of newly identified species, many of which are restricted range endemics. Here, we present a revised taxonomy and identify species limits among high-elevation populations of Scytalopus tapaculos inhabiting the Peruvian Andes. We employ an integrated framework using a combination of vocal information, mitochondrial DNA sequences, and appearance, gathered from our own fieldwork over the past 40 yr and supplemented with community-shared birdsong archives and museum specimens. We describe 3 new species endemic to Peru. Within all 3 of these species there is genetic differentiation, which in 2 species is mirrored by subtle geographic plumage and vocal variation. In a fourth species, Scytalopus schulenbergi, we document deep genetic divergence and plumage differences despite overall vocal similarity. We further propose that an extralimital taxon, Scytalopus opacus androstictus, be elevated to species rank, based on a diagnostic vocal character. Our results demonstrate that basic exploration and descriptive work using diverse data sources continues to identify new species of birds, particularly in tropical environs.

Etymology: The modern knowledge of the systematics of Scytalopus, including recognition of a level of diversity in the genus that would have astounded earlier generations of ornithologists, is largely due to Niels K. Krabbe, through his careful and thorough research both in the field and in the collection. Having himself contributed to the descriptions of no fewer than 7 new taxa of Scytalopus, we take great pleasure in taking the opportunity to name this new species in honor of our friend and colleague. The proposed English name refers to the small patch of white on the wing coverts, a feature—otherwise unusual in tapaculos—that is present on all known S. krabbei specimens.

Etymology: We are pleased to name this new tapaculo in honor of Dr. Irma Franke, our friend, colleague, former curator of the bird collection at the MUSM, and a major contributor to Peruvian ornithology for over 30 yr. It is especially fitting to name this taxon after her because she participated in the Millpo expedition that discovered the bird in 1985. The recommended English name uses a local Peruvian term for puna and páramo habitat (“jalca”) that has tussock grasses as a primary component, which was the habitat primarily used by the species at the type locality (although less so in Junín). Colloquially, this species has been called Millpo Tapaculo. However, we consider this name to be inappropriate, primarily because Millpo is now known to be at the geographic periphery of the range of the species. Our proposed English name is more reflective of the habitat of S. frankeae throughout its distribution.

Etymology: We take the opportunity to honor our friend and colleague Bret M. Whitney for his outstanding contributions to Neotropical ornithology over the past 3 decades. Bret’s keen eyes and ears, and his insightful attention to vocalizations and natural history, have given us a much greater understanding of variation and species limits in several challenging groups of tropical birds, and particularly in Scytalopus. The recommended English name refers to Bosque Ampay, the only protected area where the species occurs.

RESUMEN: Las zonas montañosas tropicales se caracterizan por un alto grado de reemplazo de especies a través de gradientes altitudinales y de topografías complejas, lo cual se manifiesta en una alta concentración de diversidad aviar. En estos paisajes, particularmente en grupos aviares con morfología conservada y difíciles de observar, los límites entre especies aún requieren ser aclarados. Uno de estos linajes es el género Scytalopus, que reúne a algunas de las aves con morfología más conservada. Estudios enfocados en las diferencias en repertorio vocal y relaciones filogenéticas han conducido a una proliferación de descripciones de especies nuevas, muchas de las cuales son endémicas con distribuciones muy restringidas. Presentamos una revisión taxonómica e identificamos límites de especies entre poblaciones de Scytalopus de grandes elevaciones de los Andes peruanos. Empleamos un enfoque integrado que combina información de vocalizaciones, de secuencias de ADN mitocondrial y de caracteres del plumaje.

Los datos fueron obtenidos mediante nuestro trabajo de campo en los últimos 40 años, complementados con información de archivos de sonidos y especímenes de museo. Describimos tres nuevas especies endémicas de Perú. Dentro de las tres existe diferenciación genética, que en dos casos se asocia con variación geográfica sutil en plumaje y vocalizaciones. Documentamos que en una cuarta especie, Scytalopus schulenbergi, existe divergencia genética profunda y variación en plumaje a pesar de que las poblaciones son similares vocalmente en general. Además, proponemos que un taxón de otra región, Scytalopus opacus androstictus, se eleve al rango de especie, con base en un carácter vocal diagnóstico. Nuestros resultados demuestran que las exploraciones básicas y un trabajo descriptivo basado en fuentes de datos diversos sigue permitiendo identificar nuevas especies de aves, particularmente en ambientes tropicales.

[Herpetology • 2019] Adenomera phonotriccus • A New Amazonian Species of Adenomera (Anura: Leptodactylidae) from the Brazilian state of Pará: A Tody-tyrant Voice in A Frog

ABSTRACT
 Leptodactylid frogs are phenotypically diverse, widely distributed across the Neotropics, and are known to harbor high levels of cryptic species diversity. This is especially true in Adenomera, where several candidate species have been recognized in a genetics-based study. Here we describe a new Amazonian species of Adenomera, which corresponds to one of the lineages previously identified as a candidate species (“sp. F”). Adenomera phonotriccus, n. sp., differs from all 18 recognized congeners by its unique advertisement call. Moreover, this species can be distinguished from nearly all congeners (except A. cotuba and A. lutzi) in having antebrachial tubercles on the undersides of its forearms. The distribution of A. phonotriccus seems to be restricted to the Araguaia-Xingu interfluve, in the eastern portion of the Brazilian state of Pará. Additional sampling effort on the right margin of the Araguaia River and along the Xingu River drainage should clarify the distribution of A. phonotriccus and perhaps result in the discovery of additional undescribed species of Adenomera in a region with high biological diversity

Diagnosis: Adenomera phonotriccus is differentiated from its congeners by the following combination of characters: (1) small size (adult male SVL 19.8–21.6 mm; table 1); (2) robust body shape; (3) toe tips unexpanded to slightly swollen (character states B, C; Heyer, 1973); (4) distal antebrachial tubercle on underside of forearm; (5) throat and belly cream colored, mottled white and gray in some parts; (6) two color morphotypes (presence/absence of dorsolateral stripes); (7) advertisement call consisting of a single type of pulsed note, emitted regularly, not in calling bouts; (8) advertisement notes composed of complete pulses (pulses with periods of silence in between); (9) long-lasting call duration (213‒433 ms).

Etymology: The epithet phonotriccus is the combination of Greek phono- (from phoné, “sound, voice”) and triccus (a small bird whose species is not identifiable, though in modern times the name is applied to tyrant flycatchers; Jobling, 2010). This name is to be treated as a noun in apposition and is an allusion to the similarity between the vocalization of the new species and those of tody-tyrants. Tody-tyrants of the Neotropical genus Hemitriccus have peculiar vocalizations, which are reminiscent of the vocalization of Adenomera phonotriccus, especially the trilled song of H. cohnhafti (see Zimmer et al., 2013). Interestingly, several Hemitriccus species are morphologically very similar, and consequently best differentiated by their vocalizations, a pattern also observed in Adenomera

Suggested vernacular name: Tody-tyrant-voiced nest-building frog.

Habitat and natural history: Adenomera phonotriccus is associated with forest habitats in Brazil’s eastern Amazonia in the state of Pará. The type locality is located on the west margin of the lower Araguaia River. This region is also occupied by savanna landscapes or ecotones between the Cerrado and Amazonian rainforest. The species was heard along an open area transect (by recent logging activity), especially at the forest edge, and inside the forest remnant. Males called while exposed or under leaf litter, and increased their calling activity during and shortly after rainfalls. The vocalization of Adenomera phonotriccus is very peculiar when heard in the field. Our first impression was that the calls might not be produced by a leptodactylid frog, or even an anuran species. Indeed, the vocalization is similar to that of some Neotropical suboscine birds (e.g., Rhynchocyclidae, Tyrannidae). There were two partially syntopic species of Adenomera also in calling activity at the study site: Adenomera sp. (A. heyeri clade) and A. aff. hylaedactyla. We heard the three species calling at the same period (late afternoon), even though A. phonotriccus and Adenomera sp. ceased most calling activity at dusk, whereas A. aff. hylaedactyla continued calling through the first hours of the night. The last species occupied open areas, e.g. pasture. In contrast, A. phonotriccus and Adenomera sp., are associated with forest habitats.

Distribution (fig. 5): Adenomera phonotriccus is known with certainty only from the type locality and Marabá. However, specimens from other regions in the state of Pará were also assigned to this lineage, referred as Adenomera sp. F, by Fouquet et al. (2014). Given the high levels of cryptic species diversity in Adenomera and complex genetic structure within the lineages identified by Fouquet et al. (2014), we conservatively restrict the species’ distribution to the type locality region until additional data, especially vocalizations, are obtained for the other populations assigned to Adenomera sp. F, a lineage widely distributed in central-east Pará, northern Brazil.

[Mammalogy • 2018] Phenotypic Evolution in Marmoset and Tamarin Monkeys (Cebidae, Callitrichinae) and A Revised Genus-level Classification

Abstract
Marmosets and tamarins (Cebidae, Callitrichinae) constitute the most species-rich subfamily of New World monkeys and one of the most diverse phenotypically. Despite the profusion of molecular phylogenies of the group, the evolution of phenotypic characters under the rapidly-emerging consensual phylogeny of the subfamily has been little studied, resulting in taxonomic proposals that have limited support from other datasets. We examined the evolution of 18 phenotypic traits (5 continuous and 13 discrete), including pelage, skull, dentition, postcrania, life-history and vocalization variables in a robust molecular phylogeny of marmoset and tamarin monkeys, quantifying their phylogenetic signal and correlations among some of the traits. At the family level, our resulting topology supports owl monkeys (Aotinae) as sister group of Callitrichinae. The topology of the callitrichine tree was congruent with previous studies except for the position of the midas group of Saguinus tamarins, which placement as sister of the bicolor group did not receive significant statistical support in both Maximum Parsimony and Bayesian Inference analyses. Our results showed that the highest value of phylogenetic signal among continuous traits was displayed by the long call character and the lowest was exhibited in the home range, intermediate values were found in characters related to osteology and skull size. Among discrete traits, pelage and osteology had similar phylogenetic signal. Based on genetic, osteological, pelage and vocalization data, we present an updated genus-level taxonomy of Callitrichinae, which recognizes six genera in the subfamily: Callimico, CallithrixCebuellaMicoLeontopithecus and Saguinus. To reflect their phenotypic distinctiveness and to avoid the use of the informal “species group”, we subdivided Saguinus in the subgenera LeontocebusSaguinus and Tamarinus (revalidated here).

Conclusions
In this study, we demonstrated that vocalization and pelage characters can have a phylogenetic signal that is stronger than or comparable to the traditionally used osteological ones. Our robust phylogeny of callitrichinae shows that the position of the midas group of Saguinus is still unresolved.

This study is the first to offer a classification of Callitrichine that takes into account phylogenetic relationships, morphological, molecular and behavioral characters. As such, we propose that the phenotypic differences among the three clades of Saguinus are better represented in the group’s taxonomy by dividing the genus in three subgenera: Leontocebus, Saguinus and Tamarinus. Like any other taxonomic hypothesis, the one presented here is subject to testing, and future studies including additional characters may offer subsides to further divide the recognized genera or even elevate some of the subgenera to full genera.

[Herpetology • 2017] Microkayla huayna • A New Species of Microkayla (Anura: Craugastoridae: Holoadeninae) from Department La Paz, Bolivia

Abstract

We describe a new species of direct-developing frog of the genus Microkayla from the Cordillera Real of the Bolivian Andes, in the Department of La Paz. The new species, Microkayla huayna sp. nov., is closely related to M. teqta and can be distinguished from other species of the genus by its brown dorsal skin and the presence of a large dark brown vocal sac in males. This is the second species of Microkayla known from the Zongo Valley, and the ninth in the Cordillera Real, contributing to a total of 22 described species in Bolivia. Given its small distribution range, we recommend to considering it as Vulnerable according to IUCN criteria.

[Herpetology • 2017] Odontophrynus juquinha • A New Diploid Species Belonging to the Odontophrynus americanus Species Group (Anura: Odontophrynidae) from the Espinhaço range, Brazil

Abstract

The Odontophrynus americanus species group is a complex of diploid and tetraploid species hardly distinguished by morphological characters. It currently consists of three allopatric diploid species (i.e. O. cordobae, O. lavillai, and O. maisuma) and one widely distributed tetraploid species (i.e. O. americanus). We herein describe a new diploid allopatric species from campo rupestre, a typical phytophysiognomy of the Espinhaço Range, Brazil. The new species is distinguishable by the diploid complement of 2n = 2x = 22 chromosomes, small to medium-sized dorsal dark brown blotches with low contrast on a light brown background, light mid-dorsal stripe absent or greatly interrupted in most specimens with yellowish coloration as the background of both head and flanks of the body, advertisement call with dominant frequency of 840–1080 Hz, pulse rate of 90.5–106.7 pulses/s, and small tadpoles (TL = 24.30–35.69 mm).

Etymology. The specific epithet is a noun in apposition and honors “Juquinha das Flores ”, a hermit whose simplicity and gentleness made him a folkloric figure at Serra do Cipó, type locality of the new species. According to the legend, Juquinha nursed from a wolf, ate scorpions, was bitten by over a hundred snakes and his age exceeded a hundred years. He used to collect flowers and roots and trade them for general items or food. His love for the mountains and the joy he provided to those who met him made him a very popular and loved figure.

Juquinha lived and died twice. The first time, he was found dead by his brother and woke up during his own funeral, strengthening the belief that he was immortal. In fact, he suffered from catalepsy, a rare disease that causes the heart to stop, as if the person had died. The second and actual death happened in 1983, at unknown age. In 1987, a homage statue to Juquinha was erected at the Serra do Cipó and became a tourist spot.
