[Paleontology • 2025] Helianthochelys redondita • the southernmost dermochelyid turtle from the Miocene

Abstract
 Dermochelyids are a unique lineage of turtles where the primary carapace underwent an extreme reduction, with its maximum expression in the extant Dermochelys coriacea. Above the primary carapace (thecal), a secondary (epithecal) carapace formed by thousands of ossicles appeared in the late Paleocene. In general, the fossil record of dermochelyids is incomplete, fragmentary, and patchy. Besides, no indepth and detailed studies on their anatomy led to a poorly resolved alpha taxonomy. In this contribution, we present one of the most complete dermochelyids in the world. Our new turtle was found in the Gaiman Formation (Lower Miocene) in Chubut, Argentina. This Burdigalian record of Patagonia represents the southernmost species in the fossil record of dermochelyid turtles in the Southern Hemisphere in the Miocene. The histological analysis of long bones shows a highly remodeled cortex, a unique condition in turtles. The tissue compaction recorded in this new turtle would suggest it was a very old individual. The phylogenetic analysis recovered the new species in a clade characterized by longitudinal ridges in the carapace and ossicles arranged in a “sunflower” pattern. Exploring the diversity patterns of dermochelyids, we recognize two peaks of diversity and three extinction events, comparable with those observed in other marine tetrapods (e.g., cetaceans, penguins).

Helianthochelys redondita gen. et sp. nov.  

Derivation of the name. The generic name, Helianthochelys, comes from the combination of the Greek words ήλιος (Helios, sun) and ανθός (anthos, flower) combined as “sunflower” and the feminine word χέλυς (chelys, turtle), in allusion to the sunflower pattern of ossicles in the secondary carapace. The specific name, redondita, refers to the type locality Estancia La Redonda Chica, hence the Latin diminutive -ita in the end. 

Holotype. MPEF-PV 10918, almost complete carapace (secondary ossicles and nuchal bone) with a putative skull fragment (jugal) and postcranial elements (cervical vertebrae 4, 7, and 8, ten thoracic vertebrae, thoracic ribs, two sacral neural arches, three caudal vertebrae, both scapulae, both pubes, both ischia, both ilia, right femur), forming part of the paleoherpetological collection of MPEF (see Sterli et al., 2021 for additional information). 

Type locality. Coastal creek located 5 km east of La Redonda Chica House in La Redonda Chica Farm, Chubut province, Argentina (Fig. 2). Age. Gaiman Formation, Burdigalian, Early Miocene (Cuitiño et al., 2023). 

Diagnosis (same for genus and species). Helianthochelys redondita is a dermochelyid turtle, based on the presence of a mosaic carapace (psephophore dermochelyid turtles) and the remaining diagnostic synapomorphies listed above. Helianthochelys redondita shares with other more crownward dermochelyids the presence of the characteristic sunflower pattern formed by the ossicles (helianthophore dermochelyid turtles). Differs from Natemys and is associated with more derived helianthophores in the absence of some elongated ossicles and the presence of anteroposterior ridges. Differs from the type of Psephophorus polygonous and is associated with other closely related taxa from the Atlantic coasts (e.g., “Psephophorusscaldii and Westerschelde specimen from Europe and “Psephophoruscalvertensis from the Atlantic side of North America) due to the absence of change of curvature until the tip of the ridge, in cross-section. Differs from all these Atlantic helianthophores based on the presence of secondary (and even tertiary) anteroposterior ridges between the five primary ridges. Differs from the Westerschelde specimen and “Psephophoruscalvertensis and is more closely related to “Psephophorusscaldii based on higher counts of “ray” ossicles around the central “disk” ossicle (up to 13 ossicles) and the presence of comparatively thinner, medium-thick (0.6–1.1 cm) ossicles as well. Differs from “Psephophorus” scaldii based on the disk/ray pattern: Helianthochelys redondita has usually three ray ossicles between two successive disk ossicles, whereas “Psephophorus” scaldii has, usually, a single ray ossicle between two successive disk ossicles.

[Paleontology • 2021] Bharitalasuchus tapani • A New Erythrosuchid Archosauriform (Archosauriformes: Erythrosuchidae) the Middle Triassic Yerrapalli Formation of south-central India

Abstract
Erythrosuchid archosauriforms are quadrupedal carnivorous reptiles with a proportionally huge skull. They represent one of the first evolutionary radiations of medium to large predatory diapsids after the Permo–Triassic mass extinction. Erythrosuchids are known from Lower–Middle Triassic rocks of South Africa, Russia, and China, and there have been preliminary reports from the Middle Triassic Yerrapalli Formation of south-central India. Here we describe, compare and figure for the first time these Indian erythrosuchid remains. We erect the new genus and species Bharitalasuchus tapani based on a holotype and paratype that preserve tooth-bearing cranial fragments, at least 17 presacral vertebrae, some ribs and probable intercentra, and partial shoulder and pelvic girdles and hindlimb and allow recognizing a series of autapomorphies and unique combination of character states among erythrosuchids. Our phylogenetic analysis recovered Bharitalasuchus tapani most closely related to Shansisuchus shansisuchus and Chalishevia cothurnata from the late Anisian of China and Ladinian of Russia, respectively. The phylogenetic affinities of this new taxon and a revision of the tetrapod assemblage of the Yerrapalli Formation shed light on the age of this unit. The presence of the Wadiasaurus-Rechnisaurus-Bharitalasuchus association in the Yerrapalli Formation closely resembles the Sinokannemeyeria-Shansisuchus dicynodont-erythrosuchid association of late Anisian to early Ladinian Chinese units. This evidence supports a post-early–middle Anisian age, even possibly early Ladinian, for the Yerrapalli Formation. The presence of possibly one of the last erythrosuchids in India would indicate that the clade still retained both a northern and southern Pangean distribution before its extinction.

[PaleoMammalogy • 2018] Neoglyptatelus uruguayensis • A New Species of Neoglyptatelus (Xenarthra, Cingulata) from the Late Miocene of Uruguay Provides New Insights on the Evolution of the Dorsal Armor in Cingulates

Abstract
The genus Neoglyptatelus Carlini, Vizcaíno and Scillato-Yané has been considered a member of Glyptatelinae, a group encompassing the purportedly basal-most glyptodonts. It is up to now represented by two species from Colombia: Neoglyptatelus originalis Carlini, Vizcaíno and Scillato-Yané, from the middle Miocene (a carapace fragment, isolated osteoderms and postcranial bones), and Neoglyptatelus sincelejanus Villarroel and Clavijo, from the middle or late Miocene (a partial carapace and a caudal armor). More scarce material assigned to this genus was recovered from the late Miocene of Uruguay and Brazil. In this article, we describe a new species, Neoglyptatelus uruguayensis, from the late Miocene Camacho Formation, Uruguay, based on an almost complete carapace and several postcranial bones. We conducted a phylogenetic analysis based on 167 morphological characters (23 new ones and 144 from previous analysis) scored for 19 taxa, encompassing some of the best known glyptodontid genera, one pampathere and four armadillos (including the enigmatic genus Pachyarmatherium Downing and White). In the most parsimonious tree that was obtained, Neoglyptatelus forms a clade with Pachyarmatherium (Pachyarmatheriidae), which is the sister group of the glyptodonts + pampatheres clade; consequently, it is not a glyptodont, as previously believed. This result, together with the known stratigraphic and geographic distribution of Neoglyptatelus and Pachyarmatherium, suggests that this new cingulate clade originated in South America and that Pachyarmatherium reached North America during the Plio—Pleistocene. The carapace of Neoglyptatelus and Pachyarmatherium comprises pelvic and scapular shields overlapping each other without separate intervening transverse mobile bands, an arrangement that differentiates both genera from the remaining cingulates.

Resumen: El género Neoglyptatelus Carlini, Vizcaíno and Scillato-Yané ha sido considerado un miembro de los Glyptatelinae, un grupo que supuestamente incluye a los gliptodontes basales. Actualmente, está representado por dos especies halladas en Colombia: Neoglyptatelus originalis Carlini, Vizcaíno and Scillato-Yané, del Mioceno medio (fragmento de caparazón, osteodermos aislados y elementos postcraneanos) y Neoglyptatelus sincelejanus Villarroel y Clavijo del Mioceno medio o tardío (parte de un caparazón y coraza caudal). Osteodermos aislados asignados a este género fueron recuperados en el Mioceno tardío de Uruguay y Brasil. En este trabajo, nosotros describimos una nueva especie, Neoglyptatelus uruguayensis, del Mioceno tardío de la Formación Camacho, Uruguay, a base de una coraza casi completa y distintos elementos postcraneanos. Nuestro estudio filogenético se sustenta en 167 caracteres óseos (23 nuevos y 144 utilizados previamente) relevados en 19 taxones, que incluyen los géneros de gliptodontes mejor conocidos, un pampaterio y cuatro armadillos, incluyendo Pachyarmatherium Downing y White. En el árbol más parsimonioso obtenido Neoglyptatelus forma con Pachyarmatherium un clado (Pachyarmatheriidae) hermano del grupo formado por pampaterios + gliptodontes, por lo cual no es un gliptodonte como se sostenía previamente. Este resultado, junto al conocimiento estratigráfico y geográfico de Neoglyptatelus y Pachyarmatherium, sugiere que los Pachyarmatheriidae se habrían originado en América del Sur y que durante el Plio—Pleistoceno Pachyarmatherium arribó a América del Norte. El caparazón de Neoglyptatelus y Pachyarmatherium contiene un escudo escapular y otro pélvico que solapan directamente entre sí, sin mediar bandas movibles transversas; este arreglo morfológico es único entre los cingulados.

Abstract

Coelophysoids are the most abundant theropod dinosaurs known from the Late Triassic through Early Jurassic represent the earliest major radiation of Neotheropoda. Within Coelophysoidea sensu lato the most stable clade is Coelophysidae, small theropods characterized by long neck and light and kinetic skull. Coelophysids are the most abundant basal non-Tetanurae neotheropods known worldwide, but until recently they were unknown from South America. We report here a new coelophysid neotheropod, Lucianovenator bonoi gen. et sp. nov., from the late Norian-Rhaetian Quebrada del Barro Formation, northwestern Argentina. A phylogenetic analysis recovers Lucianovenator bonoi nested into the monophyletic group Coelophysidae in an unresolved clade together with Coelophysis rhodesiensis and Camposaurus arizonensis. The presence of Lucianovenator in the late Norian-Rhaetian of Argentina increases the poor and scarce record of Triassic South American neotheropods, suggesting that the virtual absence of theropods in the fossil record during the Rhaetian is probably a taphonomic/stratigraphic bias instead of a decline in diversity and abundance after the Norian. Finally, the new find corroborates the American endemism in the Late Triassic and worldwide distribution during the Early Jurassic of coelophysid neotheropods, supporting the extreme faunal homogeneity hypothesized for Early Jurassic continental biotas.
