[Mammalogy • 2020] Philippine Bats of the Genus Kerivoula (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae): Overview and Assessment of Variation in K. pellucida and K. whiteheadi

Abstract
Bats of the genus Kerivoula (Mammalia, Chiroptera) are widespread in the Philippines with four reported species, but have been poorly known due to a paucity of specimens. We provide the first molecular phylogeny for Philippine Kerivoula, which supports the existence of four distinct clades that we treat as species (K. hardwickii, K. papillosa, K. pellucida, and K. whiteheadi); these four overlap broadly geographically. Each of these may be recognized on the basis of cytochrome b sequences and external and craniodental morphology. Detailed examination of K. pellucida shows little geographic differentiation within the Philippines, but they differ subtly from those on the Sunda Shelf. We consider K. whiteheadi to be composed of four recognizable clades, each restricted to a geographic region within the Philippines. We consider K. bicolor, from peninsular Thailand, and K. pusilla, from Borneo, to be distinct from K. whiteheadi. Our data indicate the presence of two species within the Philippines currently lumped as K. hardwickii; further study of these is needed. A calibrated phylogeny suggests that Kerivoula began arriving in the Philippines about 10 MYA, with each of the four current lineages arriving independently.

Distribution. Borneo, Java, the Malay Peninsula, the Philippines (Cebu, Jolo, Mindanao, Mindoro, and Palawan), and Siberut (Fig. 2; see also Corbet & Hill 1992: 154).

Kerivoula whiteheadi Thomas, 1894

Distribution. Endemic to the Philippines (Bohol, Camguin Norte, Cebu, Lubang, Luzon, Mindanao, Mindoro, Palawan, Sicogon, Siquijor and Tumaguin; Fig. 2). The type locality “Molino” probably refers to a currently nonexistent village on the east bank of the Ilagan River downstream from the city of San Mariano (M. van Weerd, pers. com., 6 May 2019).

[Mammalogy • 2016] Kerivoula oreias • The Identity of Vespertilio oreias Temminck, 1840 — Solving A Taxonomic Puzzle

Abstract

Vespertilio oreias (generally known as Myotis oreias) has long been considered an endemic bat species to Singapore but its taxonomic status has been in doubt, and no specimens have been found since its description in 1840. Temminck formally described it based on a mounted skin (now in poor condition and accompanied by some skull fragments). The holotype was re-examined and we found it to be a composite, consisting of two separate individuals representing two distinct genera, the skin belonging to a Kerivoula whereas the skull fragments are of a Myotis. The mounted skin is accepted herewith as the name-bearing type, as the skull fragments were taken out after Temminck had published his description. Unfortunately, neither the skin nor the dental remains show enough anatomical details to identify the species unambiguously. Hence, the name Vespertilio oreias is considered a nomen dubium and the name oreias should be referred to the genus Kerivoula.

[Mammalogy • 2007] Kerivoula krauensis | ค้างคาวยอดกล้วยหลังสีทอง | Krau Woolly Bat • A new species of Kerivoula (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) from peninsular Malaysia

Abstract
A new species of small Kerivoula is described from peninsular Malaysia. It is similar in size and form to Kerivoula hardwickii Miller 1898 or K. intermedia Hill and Francis 1984, but is distinguished by its distinctive colouration — dorsal fur has extensive black bases with shiny golden tips, ventral fur has dark grey bases with whitish-buff tips — as well as several characters of dentition and skull shape. Sequence analysis of the first 648 base pairs of cytochrome oxidase I gene (DNA barcode) indicates a divergence of at least 11% from all other species of Kerivoula, a difference comparable to that between other species of Kerivoula.

Kerivoula krauensis was discovered for the first time in the 1990s in Krau Wildlife Reserve, Peninsular Malaysia. In 2007 it was officially described and given the name K. krauensis. When “ensis” is added to a name it means that the animal is from, or belongs to that place. So Kerivoula krauensis is the Kerivoula belonging to, or from Krau. So far it has only been found in Krau Wildlife Reserve, so it would be described as endemic to Krau, although there are some recent possible records from Borneo and Sumatra.
