[Entomology • 2026] Dolichopoda balrogi Delving too Deep: Morphological and Molecular Description of A New Cave-dwelling Dolichopoda (Orthoptera: Rhaphidophoridae) from Kastellorizo Island, Greece

Abstract
A new species of cave cricket, Dolichopoda balrogi sp. nov., is described from the Greek island of Kastellorizo (Dodecanese, Levantine Sea). The species is documented from artificial subterranean habitats, as no accessible natural caves are known on the island. Detailed morphological analysis of both sexes reveals a unique combination of characters, including the structure of the male epiphallus, the shape of the tenth tergite, the presence of styli on the male subgenital plate, and the morphology of the female ovipositor, which clearly differentiate it from all known congeners. Comparative morphology indicates strong affinities with Anatolian species of Dolichopoda, particularly D. sbordonii and D. lycia, and no close relationship with the Aegean species complex occurring on islands of East Aegean and the adjacent Anatolian coast. These affinities are further supported by molecular phylogenetic analyses inferred from DNA barcoding. Both Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses consistently recover the Kastellorizo lineage as a distinct and well-supported clade nested within the southwestern Anatolian lineage of the genus. The discovery of D. balrogi sp. nov. represents the first documented occurrence of an Anatolian lineage of Dolichopoda within European territory, underscoring the unique biogeographical character of Kastellorizo as a Greek territory with pronounced Anatolian biogeographical affinities. This finding emphasizes the importance of integrated morphological and molecular approaches in resolving species boundaries and evolutionary relationships and contributes to the growing evidence of underestimated biodiversity in the eastern Mediterranean region.

Dolichopoda (Dolichopodabalrogi Kalaentzis & Alexiou, sp. nov.

Diagnosis.— Because of the unarmed fore and middle femora, the new species described here belongs to the genus Dolichopoda. It is a member of subgenus Dolichopoda because of the absence of spines on all femora, the presence of spines on the fore tibia, and the non-bifurcated median process of the epiphallus. The new species is similar to D. sbordonii, a species endemic to the adjacent Anatolian coast. Both share a non-bilobate median process of epiphallus and the presence of styli at the subgenital plate of the male. The new species differs mainly in the shape of the median process of epiphallus (trapezoidal vs triangular) and the shape of the X tergite of the male (traces of lateral lobes vs lateral lobes). The female of D. sbordonii differs mainly by the shorter ovipositor with smaller number of denticles on the ventral valve. Dolichopoda lycia is a species also present on the adjacent coast. It shares with D. balrogi sp. nov. the shape of the tenth male tergite, with only inconspicuous lateral lobes and a similar ovipositor in females, with 15 denticles on the ventral valve. It differs in the bilobed median process of the epiphallus and the absence of styli.

Abstract
We describe four new species of the genus Dolichopoda from various areas of Greece, namely D. athosensis sp. nov., D. dirussoi sp. nov., D. karoutsosi sp. nov. and D. kotsabasi sp. nov. New locality records for Greece for the genera Dolichopoda and Troglophylus are given, in addition to the presence of Troglophilus brevicauda as a new country record. We discuss the relationship with the already known species of the area.

Abstract  
The New Zealand cave wētā genus Isoplectron was first described by Hutton (1896) and included two species, Isoplectron armatum and I. calcaratum. Two more species, I. cochleatum and I. aciculatum, were described by Karny in 1935 and in 1937, respectively. The species I. cochleatum was later moved to the genus Pharmacus Pictet & de Saussure, 1893. Here we clarify the status and appearance of all known species of Isoplectron, and of other closely related cave wētā. Based on morphology and mtDNA sequences we determine that the genera Petrotettix Richards, 1972 and Setascutum Richards, 1972, belong in Isoplectron, and are thus synonymised with the latter. We also infer that Isoplectron aciculatum Karny, 1937 does not hold species rank, and that it should be considered a subspecies of Isoplectron armatum instead. The male of Isoplectron pallidum (Richards, 1972) comb. nov. and the female of Isoplectron armatum aciculatum Karny, 1937 are described here for the first time. Using molecular data, we also establish that two new species that are morphologically similar to Isoplectron are in fact more closely related to Pharmacus. These species are assigned to a new genus, Praecantrix gen. nov. We describe seven new species and two new subspecies of New Zealand rhaphidophorids belonging to the genera Isoplectron Hutton, 1896 and Praecantrix: Isoplectron bicolor sp. nov., I. maculatum sp. nov., I. virgatum sp. nov., I. ferratum sp. nov., I. parallelum sp. nov., Praecantrix silvatica silvatica gen., sp. et subsp. nov., P. silvatica lutea gen., sp. et subsp. nov. and P. saxicola gen. et sp. nov. Species demoted to subspecies rank: Isoplectron aciculatum Karny, 1937 becomes Isoplectron armatum aciculatum Karny, 1937. [Entomology • 2024] Eburnocauda saxatilis gen. et sp. nov. • Systematics and Biology of A Cave Cricket (Orthoptera: Rhaphidophoridae) from Australian Granite Pseudokarst

Abstract
Cave crickets (Orthoptera: Rhaphidophoridae) are a globally-distributed group of insects found in cool, dark habitats of high relative humidity. In Australia, eight genera are described and several are known only from cave environments, though a far greater diversity likely remains undiscovered both underground and in forest habitats. Here, we use molecular and morphological evidence to describe Eburnocauda saxatilis gen. et sp. nov. Beasley-Hall & Iannello from Britannia Creek Cave (BCC), a granite cave system found in Victorian wet sclerophyll forest. Eburnocauda saxatilis sp. nov. is sympatric with an undescribed species of Cavernotettix Richards, 1966 and males can be easily identified by their extremely elongate styli. BCC experiences periodic flooding and is accessible year-round to recreational caving groups, who often directly disturb cricket populations via accidental trampling. We consider these threats, paired with the extremely restricted known range of Eburnocauda saxatilis sp. nov., justification for this species to receive conservation listing. We discuss the phylogenetic placement of Eburnocauda gen. nov. and the conservation implications of its establishment as a new genus.

 Diagnosis. Eburnocauda can be distinguished from other rhaphidophorids by the extremely robust and long styli projecting from the male subgenital plate, reaching over half the length of the cerci. Eburnocauda also bears, on average, two ventral linear spines on either side of the fore and mid tibiae (prolaterally and retrolaterally); except for Parvotettix Richards, 1968 (which lacks these spines), all other Australian genera have at least three. 

Etymology. From the Latin eburno (ivory) and cauda (tail), alluding to the tusk-like styli found on the posterior of males. It is a feminine noun in the nominative singular case.


Eburnocauda saxatilis Beasley-Hall & Iannello sp. nov. 

 Diagnosis. A medium-sized cave cricket with diagnostic features as per the monotypic genus and an adult body length of 12–14 mm. Currently only known from the Highlands – Southern Fall bioregion of Victoria, Australia.

Etymology. From Latin saxatilis, meaning that which lives amongst rocks. It is a feminine adjective in the nominative singular case

ABSTRACT
The New Zealand alpine cave wētā genus Pharmacus was first described by Pictet & de Saussure (1893) as a monotypic taxon. Three species were added to the genus by Richards in 1972. Here we clarify the status and appearance of all known species of Pharmacus. Based on morphology and mtDNA sequences we determine that the species Pharmacus brewsterensis Richards, 1972 is better placed within the genus Notoplectron Richards, 1964. We also resolve the species Isoplectron cochleatum Karny, 1935 and show that it belongs to the genus Pharmacus. Additionally, we describe six new species and three new subspecies from the southern regions of South Island, New Zealand. We provide key traits and known distributions for all known species and subspecies in this alpine genus. New combinations: Pharmacus brewsterensis Richards, 1972 becomes Notoplectron brewsterense (Richards, 1972) comb. nov.Isoplectron cochleatum Karny, 1935 becomes Pharmacus cochleatus (Karny, 1935) comb. nov. Pharmacus cochleatus fiordensis subsp. nov.

Etymology: Fiordensis’, inhabits Fiordland, the geographical region in the south-west corner of New Zealand.
Crowe (2002) refers to this insect as ‘black tumbling cave wētā’ in light of his observations of how “to escape danger, it leaps, then rolls down the scree to tumble into a gap between the stones”.

Pharmacus cochleatus rawhiti subsp. nov.

Etymology: Rāwhiti’ is Te Reo for ‘eastern’ – this subspecies inhabits mountain ranges east of the Southern Alps.Unaware of the fact that it belongs to the same species as his ‘black tumbling cave wētā’, 
Crowe (2002) refers to this insect as ‘Remarkables cave wētā’. We discourage the use of this common name, since there are at least four species of cave wētā found in The Remarkables, including two species of Pharmacus. The range of Pharmacus cochleatus rawhiti subsp. nov. extends well beyond The Remarkables, as far south as the Garvie and Umbrella Mountains, and west to the Livingstone Mountains.

Pharmacus cristatus sp. nov.

Etymology: Cristātus’ is Latin for ‘tufted’. Named after the prominent hair tufts on the vertex of the male subgenital plate (Fig. 10G–H).


Pharmacus notabilis sp. nov.

Etymology: ‘Nŏtābĭlis’ is Latin for ‘remarkable’, after the location where the species was first discovered, The Remarkables near Queenstown. Pharmacus notabilis means ‘remarkable sorcerer’.


Pharmacus senex sp. nov.

Etymology: Senex’ is Latin for ‘old’ (of a person), after the Old Man and Old Woman Ranges in Central Otago. Pharmacus senex means ‘old sorcerer’.


Pharmacus concinnus sp. nov.

Etymology: Concīnnus’ is Latin for ‘pleasing’, ‘elegant’, also ‘symmetrical’, after the Symmetry Peaks in the Eyre Mountains where it was first discovered. Pharmacus concinnus means ‘elegant sorcerer’.


Pharmacus perfidus sp. nov.

Etymology: Perfĭdus’ (noun) is Latin for ‘criminal’, ‘crook’. Pharmacus perfidus means ‘criminal sorcerer’. Try scrambling on the jagged, crumbly ridgelines of the Takitimu Mountains at night and you will know why. It is also banished to an isolated mountain range, a great distance away from all other Pharmacus species (see Fig. 6).
 

Pharmacus vallestris sp. nov.

Etymology: ‘Vallestris’ is Latin for ‘of the valley’. In contrast to sympatric species that inhabit the mountain tops.

Abstract
The genus Pleioplectron was first described by Hutton (1896) and included six New Zealand species. This genus has since had three species moved, one each to the genera Pachyrhamma Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1888, Miotopus Hutton, 1898 and Novoplectron Richards, 1958. Here we clarify the status and appearance of Pleioplectron simplex Hutton, 1896 (incl. P. pectinatum Hutton, 1896 syn. nov.) and P. hudsoni Hutton, 1896, as well as P. thomsoni (Chopard, 1923) comb. nov., which is transferred from the genus Weta Chopard, 1923. The genus Weta is newly synonymised with Pleioplectron. We also describe seven new species of Pleioplectron from South Island, New Zealand: P. auratum sp. nov., P. caudatum sp. nov, P. crystallae sp. nov., P. flavicorne sp. nov., P. gubernator sp. nov., P. rodmorrisi sp. nov and P. triquetrum sp. nov. We base these descriptions on morphology using fresh specimens of both male and female adults, and provide support for each with DNA sequence variation (mtDNA, partial COI).

[Entomology • 2019] Review of the Subgenus Tachycines (Gymnaeta) Adelung, 1902 (Orthoptera, Rhaphidophoridae, Aemodogryllinae, Aemodogryllini)

Abstract
In this work, ten new species of Tachycines (Gymnaeta) are identified and described from China: Tachycines (Gymnaeta) parvus sp. nov., Tachycines (Gymnaeta) lushuicus sp. nov., Tachycines (Gymnaeta) yueyangensis sp. nov., Tachycines (Gymnaeta) lii sp. nov., Tachycines (Gymnaeta) dianxicus sp. nov., Tachycines (Gymnaeta) pallidus sp. nov., Tachycines (Gymnaeta) dispar sp. nov., Tachycines (Gymnaeta) verus sp. nov., Tachycines (Gymnaeta) vicinus sp. nov., Tachycines (Gymnaeta) maoershanensis sp. nov.. Two subspecies of Gorochov et al. (2006): T. (G.) ferecaecus ferecaecus (Gorochov, Rampini & Di Russo, 2006) and T. (G.) ferecaecus proximus (Gorochov, Rampini & Di Russo, 2006) are elevated as two independent valid species. Also two subspecies of Gorochov (2010): T. (G.) sichuanus sichuanus (Gorochov, 2010) and T. (G.) sichuanus altimontanus (Gorochov, 2010) can be elevated as two independent species. Three synonyms: Tachycines (Gymnaeta) tianmushanensis Liu & Zhang, 2001 syn. n., Tachycines (Gymnaeta) improvisus (Gorochov, 2010) syn. n. and T. (G.) aspes (Rampini, Di Russo & Cobolli, 2008) syn. n. are proposed. A new combination Eutachycines crenatus (Gorochov, Rampini & Di Russo, 2006) comb. nov. is involved. A key to the species of Tachycines (Gymnaeta) is provided.
