[Botany • 2025] Dendrobium eruciforme (Orchidaceae) • A New Species of Dendrobium sect. Microphytanthe from West Papua Province, Indonesia

Dendrobium eruciforme Schuit., Saputra & Wanma,

in Schuiteman, Saputra, Wanma, Jennings et Heatubun, 2025.

Summary
Dendrobium eruciforme Schuit., Saputra & Wanma (Orchidaceae), the fourth known species of sect. Microphytanthe Schltr., is described and illustrated. A detailed description, morphological comparisons, habitat information, a preliminary conservation assessment and some notes are provided. A key to the four species of sect. Microphytanthe is presented. Vegetatively, D. eruciforme is one of the smallest Dendrobium species, in this respect only equalled or even surpassed by the Australian D. toressae (F.M.Bailey) Dockrill.

Dendrobium eruciforme Schuit., Saputra & Wanma, sp. nov.
(sect. Microphytanthe).
Type: Indonesia, West Papua Province, ...

Recognition. Within sect. Microphytanthe, this species resembles Dendrobium nummularia, because of the congested pseudobulbs, the tiny leaves and the habit of growing appressed to the substrate. Dendrobium eruciforme differs in the verruculose leaves, 3 – 5.6 mm long, with unequally bilobulate apices (vs leaves when dry with prominent reticulate veins [fide Schlechter], 4 – 8 mm long, apex apiculate in D. nummularia); papillose ovary (vs glabrous ovary); lip with cross-ridge below the middle, apex rounded (vs lip without cross-ridge, apex bilobulate); lip surface velutinous (vs lip glabrous with ciliate lobules).

Etymology. From the Latin eruca, a caterpillar, and -formis, shaped as, referring to the straight, creeping rhizomes that are closely appressed to the substrate.

Abstract
A new variety of Orchidaceae, Dendrobium moniliforme var. hongbinii, collected from Sichuan Province, China, is described and illustrated based on morphological characteristics and molecular biological analysis. It belongs to Dendrobium and is similar to D. moniliforme, from which it differs by the length of mentum is more than half of the bud, the angle is obtuse, calyx sac ends acuminate, the petals and mid-lobe are subelliptic, the ratio of mid-lobe to the labellum is 1/3. Molecular biological analysis based on nuclear markers (ITS) and plastid markers (trnL intron) indicates that D. moniliforme var. hongbinii is a variety of D. moniliforme.

Abstract
A new orchid species, Dendrobium yongjiaense, from Zhejiang, China, is described and illustrated here. Detailed morphological study indicates that D. yongjiaense is similar to D. monticola and D. strongylanthum, but it differs in the shape and size of leaf, flower size, and a mid-lobe of the lip with densly distinct crystalline papillae and wrinkled 3–5 crest lines in middle. Molecular phylogeny analyses based on the nrITS and plastid DNA (matK and trnL-F) reveal that D. yongjiaense is a member of sect. Stachyobium, and genetically similar to D. monticola.

[Botany • 2020] Dendrobium jinghuanum (Orchidaceae: Epidendroideae) • A New orchid Species from Yunnan, China: evidence from both morphology and DNA

Dendrobium jinghuanum B.Q.Zheng & Y.Wang,

in Zheng, Zou, Wan et Wang, 2020.

Abstract
A new orchid species, Dendrobium jinghuanum (Epidendroideae, Orchidaceae), from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular data. Morphological investigations indicated this new orchid is similar to D. bensoniae, D. crystallinum, and D. wardianum, but it can be differentiated easily from them by associated characteristics: 7-veined sepals, 9-veined petals, a chestnut blotch on either side of lip disk, an anther cap with distinct crystalline papillae, and stems without swollen nodes. Molecular phylogeny analyses showed that D. jinghuanum is a member of section Dendrobium s.l. and sister to D. bensoniae but not D. crystallinum or D. wardianum.

[Botany • 2024] Dendrobium krabiense (Orchidaceae) • A New Species of Dendrobium sect. Crinifera from peninsular Thailand

Dendrobium krabiense P.O’Byrne ex H.A.Pedersen & Suddee,

in Pedersen et Suddee, 2024.

Abstract
A new species of Dendrobium sect. Crinifera is described from Thailand. The late Peter O’Byrne is appropriately credited for his important preparatory work for our study and for coining the name of the new species, D. krabiense. Apparently endemic to southern Thailand, D. krabiense is similar to D. pardalinum but differs in the lip mid-lobe being distinctly clawed and in the lip ornaments only consisting of two lateral keels that extend from near lip base to claw of mid-lobe. Dendrobium krabiense is also similar to D. phuketense but differs in having larger, spotted flowers with a proportionally longer mentum. The material here referred to D. krabiense was previously misidentified as Flickingeria pallens (now considered a synonym of D. pardalinum).

Diagnosis: Dendrobium krabiense is similar to D. pardalinum but differs in the lip mid-lobe being distinctly clawed (vs. sessile) and in the lip having two lateral keels extending from near lip base to claw of mid-lobe (vs. one median and two lateral keels extending from near lip base to near mid-lobe apex). Dendrobium krabiense is also similar to D. phuketense, but differs in having larger, spotted flow-ers with a mentum that is proportionally longer in relation to the dorsal sepal.

Distribution: Apparently endemic to peninsular Thailand and small nearby islands (Fig. 3). However, as D. krabiense occurs close to Thailand’s southern border in Satun province, it should also be searched for in the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia.

Dendrobium dedeksantosoi Metusala,

in Metusala, Saputra, Trimanto & Nisyawati, 2021.

Abstract
Dendrobium dedeksantosoi, a new species of Dendrobium section Spatulata (Orchidaceae: Epidendroideae) from Maluku Islands, Indonesia, is described and illustrated. The flower of this new species is morphologically most similar to Dendrobium busuangense, but differs in having different shape and size of petals and lip as well as a different length ratio between column and column-foot.
