[Botany • 2026] Sonerila roxburghii (Melastomataceae) • A New Species from the southern Western Ghats, India

Abstract
Sonerila roxburghii Resmi, Nampy & Karthig. (Melastomataceae) is described as a new species from the Mankulam Reserve forest in the southern Western Ghats, India. It is morphologically similar to S. grandiflora and S. sadasivanii but differs from them by having terete stems, lanceolate to elliptic leaves with a cuneate and attenuate base, 3–10-flowered cymes, obscurely 6-ribbed hypanthia, acuminate to rostrate anthers, and 6-ribbed capsules.

Etymology. The specific epithet roxburghii honours William Roxburgh (1751–1815) for his valuable contributions to the taxonomy of the genus Sonerila.

Abstract
Two new species of the genus Teulisna Walker, 1862 (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Lithosiina) are described from India: T. (Cossa) breveprocessa sp. nov. (from the Western Ghats of Kerala) and T. (Tegulata) nicobara sp. nov. (from the Great Nicobar Island). The former is diagnosed with its close congeners in the subgenus Cossa Walker: T. (C.) ruma (Swinhoe, [1890] 1889), T. (C.) munnara Volynkin, 2023, T. (C.) basigera (Walker, [1865]) and T. (C.) inducta (Walker, [1865]), whereas the latter is diagnosed with T. (Tegulata) chiloides chiloides (Walker 1862). T. (Poikilothosia) sayinyingpo Huang, Volynkin & Černý, 2025, from Arunachal Pradesh, which is a new record to India.

Abstract
We describe two new species, Langelurillus sahyadri Sanap, Tripathi, Thackeray & Caleb sp. nov. (♂♀) from Maharashtra and Langelurillus udaipurensis Tripathi, Sanap & Caleb sp. nov. (♂) from Rajasthan. Additionally, the previously unknown females of L. lacteus Sanap, Joglekar & Caleb, 2017 and L. onyx Caleb, Sanap, Joglekar & Prajapati, 2017 are described for the first time. Detailed morphological descriptions, illustrations, diagnostic comparisons of the studied species, and a distributional map for all Indian species are provided.

[Botany • 2026] Lobelia janardhananii (Lobeliaceae) • A New Species from the Western Ghats of India

Abstract
A new species of Lobelia, L. janardhananii K.M.P.Kumar & Sunil is described from Kerala, India. It resembles Lobelia heyneana Schult. in herbaceous habit and axillary solitary flowers but differs from the latter by leaf shape, texture, flower length, compressed or ancipitous pedicel, characters of calyx lobe, the colour of corolla tube and lobe, size and colour of stamens, stylar length and seeds. A detailed description and photographs are provided for the identification of the species.

Diagnosis: Lobelia janardhananii sp. nov. is morphologically similar to L. heyneana, but differs in the rhomboid, elliptic or ovate leaves, 1.5–4 × 0.4–2 cm, attenuate base (vs. elliptic to sub-orbicular, 0.6–0.8 × 0.4– 0.8 cm; base truncate and decurrent); flowers 14–17 mm long (vs. 8.7–9.2 mm long); pedicel compressed or ancipitous, bibracteolate near middle (vs. trigonous, bracteoles absent); sepals toothed, hirsute abaxially (vs. entire, glabrous on both sides); corolla tube blue (vs. tube white); upper lip 3–4 mm long, whitish-blue; lower lip bright blue (vs. upper lip white; lower lip pale violet); filament of stamens 4.5–5 mm long, purplish (vs. 1.3–1.4 mm long, light green).  

Etymology: The specific epithet is to honour the contributions of Sri. N.K. Janardhanan, Gardner, Herb Garden, Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal, for his 45 years of dedicated service towards the conservation of threatened plants, especially medicinal plants.

Abstract
A new species of grandisoniid caecilian amphibian, Gegeneophis bavali sp. nov., is described based on two specimens from northern Kerala state in the southern part of the Western Ghats region of peninsular India. This species is distinguished from all other Gegeneophis by the combination of lacking an unsegmented terminal shield, having secondary annular grooves, and having more than 132 primary annuli. A new key to the identification of the species of the genus is presented.

Abstract
A new species of Phyllocephalum is described and illustrated from Palakkad district of Kerala, India. The new species shows similarity to P. rangacharii but differs with respect to key floral traits, viz. ovoid shape of the capitula, involucral bracts in 3 series, inflated receptacle and ovoid 6-ribbed ovary with 5–6 densely barbellate pappus setae. Colour photographs, SEM images of pollen and florets along with a distribution map are provided.

[Herpetology • 2026] Nyctibatrachus kaliHiding in plain sight: A New Species of Nyctibatrachus (Anura: Nyctibatrachidae) from the central Western Ghats, India

Abstract 
Frogs belonging to the genus Nyctibatrachus are endemic to the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot. They are the second most speciose frogs in the Western Ghats, with 70% of the species having narrow distribution ranges. They are also highly cryptic in nature. In this study, we describe a new species of Nyctibatrachus frog from the central Western Ghats of India. Nyctibatrachus kali sp. nov. is described from the Kali River basin of North Karnataka. The new species is distinguishable from all 34 currently recognised Nyctibatrachus species by a combination of morphological, acoustic and phylogenetic analyses. Molecular phylogeny based on two mitochondrial genes (16S rRNA and ND1) reveals that it belongs to the N. sanctipalustris clade. Based on the analysis of 16S rRNA, Nyctibatrachus kali sp. nov. shows genetic divergence >5% with its congeners, and based on the analysis of ND1, Nyctibatrachus kali sp. nov. shows genetic divergence >10% with its congeners. The bioacoustics analyses indicated that the new species differed from their closest congeners based on the dominant frequency of the advertisement calls and the number of notes in each call. For the first time, we observed two distinct advertisement call categories–call notes with low and high dominant frequency in Nyctibatrachus kali sp. nov. and its congeners. Our study adds to the rich diversity of frogs from the Western Ghats of India.

 Nyctibatrachus kali sp. nov. 

Diagnosis: Based on molecular phylogenetic analysis, Nyctibatrachus kali sp. nov. belongs to the N. sanctipalustris clade (Fig. 4) and is a sister lineage to N. dattatreyaensis. Hence, we compared Nyctibatrachus kali sp. nov. (both ♂ and ♀ individuals of type specimens) with all the species belonging to the N. sanctipalustris clade (both ♂ and ♀ individuals of type specimens), i.e., N. dattatreyaensis; N. karnatakaensis; N. kumbara; N. sanctipalustris; N. shiradi, N. tunga and N. vrijeuni.

Etymology: We name the species as Kali, the river at which the type locality of the species located. The specific epithet is an invariable noun in apposition.

Abstract
A new species of Ophiorrhiza (Rubiaceae)is identified and described from the Vagamon hills of Kerala, Western Ghats, India. The new species is similar to Ophiorrhiza eriantha Wight and Ophiorrhiza meenachilarensis Robi and Balan, but differs in having densely hirsute hairs on young stem, petiole and peduncle; patent hirsute hairs on, above and beneath the leaf; 14.0–15.0 mm long flower; linear to falcate bracts and bracteoles; sparsely hirsute cupuliform hypanthium; triangular calyx lobes; 9.5–12.0 mm long corolla tube; stamens inserted at the middle of the corolla tube; and oblong and papillate stigma. A detailed description, colour photographs, comparison, phenology, distribution, conservation status and key to the allied taxa of the new species are provided.

Diagnosis: This species shows close morphological resemblance with O. eriantha Wight, but differs in having densely ascending hirsute indumentum on stem (versus pubescent or glabrous stem), patent hirsute hairs on both sides of leaves (versus glabrous above, puberulous on the nerves beneath), densely hirsute petiole (versus glabrous or puberulous petiole), stipule acuminate to attenuate at apex (versus stipule bifid at apex), 14.0–15.0 mm long flower (versus 19.0–27.0 mm long flower), cupuliform hypanthium (versus obovoid hypanthium), triangular calyx lobes (versus subulate calyx lobes), densely puberulous hairs and with a villose ring at the middle of the corolla tube inside (versus glabrous inside without a ring of villose hairs), 2.5–3.0 mm long corolla lobes (versus 5.0–7.0 mm long corolla lobes), 1.75–2.0 mm long anthers (versus 3.0–3.5 mm long anthers), oblong stigma, obtuse at apex with papillate hairs (versus lanceolate stigma, acute at apex and glabrous), 0.4 × 0.5 mm, irregularly angled seeds (versus 0.6 × 0.5 mm, 4–6 angular seeds).

Etymology: The specific epithet is in honour of retired Professor, Dr Jomy Augustine, Department of Botany, St Thomas College, Pala, Kottayam, Kerala, for his guidance and support in the field of taxonomy to the authors. Dr Jomy Augustine has significantly contributed to the documentation and conservation of plant diversity in the Western Ghats through his extensive field explorations, research and publications.

Abstract
Amblyceps vayavy, a new species of amblycipitid catfish, is described from the northern part of the Western Ghats Hotspot, India. The new species can be distinguished from all congeners in having the following combination of characters: forked caudal fin, adipose-fin separate from dorsal procurrent part of the caudal fin, centrally projecting hooks on proximal lepidotrichia of median caudal-fin rays absent, incomplete lateral line, lower jaw longer than upper, anal-fin base 15.3–15.9% SL, body depth at anus 14.7–15.3% SL, and adipose-fin base length 21.8–22.3% SL.

Abstract
A new species of OsbeckiaO. zubeengargiana, from the family Melastomatacaeae, is described based on collections made from Assam, India. The new species is related to O. rostrata because of its tetramerous flowers, but can be distinguished by its habit, foliar morphology, bract shape and size, morphology of the intersepalar emergences, ciliated style base, and seed size. Detailed taxonomic descriptions, photographs showing diagnostic features, and comparison with the related species are provided here.

[Arachnida • 2026] Titanidiops kolhapurensis • A New Species of the Trapdoor Spider Genus Titanidiops Simon (Araneae: Idiopidae) from western Maharashtra, India

ABSTRACT
A new species, Titanidiops kolhapurensis sp. n., is described on the basis of six adult female and three adult male specimens collected from the outskirts of Kolhapur City, western Maharashtra, India. Specimens of both sexes are described in detail and they are distinguished from all other known peninsular Indian congeners of Titanidiops and Idiops in several non-overlapping morphological characters. Notes on natural history, and on intraspecific variation of genital characters, as well as measurements and meristic data of the new species are provided. Additionally, we present preliminary observations on occurrence of the new species and other sympatric habitat specialist taxa in natural and altered/modified habitats from the type locality and nearby localities. We emphasise the urgent need to halt further alteration or modification of the natural habitat of T. kolhapurensis sp. n. and to implement habitat restoration measures to safeguard the new species and other habitat specialists from the imminent risk of local extinction.

[Crustacea • 2026] Ghatiana dhritiarum • A New Species of freshwater crab in the Genus Ghatiana (Brachyura: Gecarcinucidae) from the central Western Ghats, India

Abstract
A new species of freshwater crab, Ghatiana dhritiarum sp. nov., is described from the central Western Ghats of India in the Uttara Kannada District of the Karnataka State. The new species inhabits water-filled holes of tree trunks and laterite boulders in evergreen forests, with an omnivorous diet. Characterized mainly by a proportionately broad carapace, slender eyestalks, and a medially distinctly curved male first gonopod with a relatively long ultimate article, G. dhritiarum sp. nov. also exhibits other unique morphological features and a distinct coloration in life. This new species can be distinguished from its morphologically closest congener, Ghatiana dvivarna Pati, Thackeray, Bajantri and Hegde, 2022, by differences in the distance between the frontal margin and the anterior margin of the epistome, the relative size of the eyes, the shape of the male first gonopod, and the size of the vulvae, as well as live coloration. This discovery raises the total number of known species in Ghatiana Pati and Sharma, 2014, to 14, including seven species from Karnataka, emphasizing the need for continued exploration, especially in the central Western Ghats region.

Ghatiana dhritiarum sp. nov.

Diagnosis. Carapace in adult proportionately broad (CW/CL approximately 1.7-1.9), strongly arched (CH/CL approximately 0.7-0.8); lateral margins strongly convex; frontal margin some distance from anterior margin of epistome, exposing antennular fossae (Figs. 1A, B, 2A, B, D, E, 3A, B). Etymology. The specific epithet "dhritiarum" is formed directly from the personal name "Dhriti" honoring two ladies. First, it recognizes Dr. Dhriti Banerjee, the present Director of the Zoological Survey of India, whose leadership and scholarly work have been instrumental in advancing our understanding of Indian fauna. Secondly, it honors the daughter of one of the authors, G.D. Naik, whose name is also "Druthi" (has the same pronunciation as “Dhriti” in Kannada dialect).

[Botany • 2026] Lepidagathis konkanensis (Acanthaceae: Barlerieae) • A New Species from Lateritic Plateaus of Konkan Region of Western Ghats based on morphological and molecular evidence

Abstract
Lepidagathis konkanensis, a new species from the lateritic plateaus of the Konkan region in Maharashtra, India, is described and illustrated based on distinct morphological and molecular characters. Morphologically and phylogenetically, this species is close to L. mahakassapae and L. dalzelliana, but it can be distinguished by its compact inflorescence, oblanceolate leaves, bilabiate yellow corolla, elliptic-lanceolate bracteoles with three nerves, shorter style and smaller seeds. In addition, the longer branch length observed in the phylogenetic tree further supports the presence of molecular divergence. Detailed morphological descriptions, illustrations and color plates of field photographs and floral part micrographs are provided to aid in precise identification. The IUCN conservation status has also been assessed to emphasize the need for conservation measures.

Diagnosis: A species similar to L. mahakassapae and L. dalzelliana, but differing in having condensed spikes (versus elongated spikes in L. mahakassapae and elongated or pyramidal spikes in L. dalzelliana), smaller floral bracts with 5–7 nerves (versus larger floral bracts with 7 nerves in L. mahakassapae and with 3–5 nerves in L. dalzelliana), elliptic-lanceolate bracteoles with 3 nerves (versus lanceolate bracteoles with 5 nerves in L. mahakassapae and elliptic-oblong bracteoles with 1 nerve in L. dalzelliana), a shorter style, 8 mm long (versus 14 mm in L. mahakassapae and 14–17 mm in L. dalzelliana), and smaller seeds, 3.0–3.5 × 2.0–2.5 mm (versus 3.0–3.7 × 3.0 mm in L. mahakassapae and 2.8 × 3.0 mm in L. dalzelliana).
 
Etymology: The specific epithet ‘konkanensis' alludes to the geographical region of the type locality, i.e. Konkan region of Maharashtra.

[Entomology • 2025] Metadon reemeri & M. ghorpadei • Review of the Indian Species of Metadon Reemer, 2013 (Diptera: Syrphidae: Microdontinae), with Description of Two New Species

Abstract
The hoverfly genus Metadon Reemer, 2013 is reviewed from India and two new species, M. ghorpadei sp. nov. and M. reemeri sp. nov., are described from New Delhi and Tamil Nadu, respectively; based on morphological and molecular analyses. Six species of Metadon that were previously reported from India are illustrated and briefly diagnosed. A new combination, Metadon unicolor (Brunetti) comb. nov., is proposed for Microdon unicolor Brunetti, 1915. An identification key to the genera of Microdontinae from India, a key to the Indian species of Metadon and a provisional species checklist for this genus are provided. This is the first record of Metadon from southern India. Habitat profile and conservation aspects are discussed for the two new species.
