[Ornithology • 2026] Rhipidura laguceria • A New and Cryptic Fantail Species (Passeriformes: Rhipiduridae) from the Babar Islands, Maluku Province, Indonesia

 Abstract  
The Babar Islands, in the Banda Sea, Indonesia, have long been known to host several endemic avian taxa, but only recently have some of these been elevated to species rank. Here we investigate the internal taxonomy of Cinnamon-tailed Fantail Rhipidura fuscorufa P. L. Sclater, 1883, a monotypic passerine found on the Tanimbar Islands (from which it was described) and, 135 km to the west, on the Babar Islands. We compare differences between these populations using 19 specimens and 18 sound recordings, finding that while morphologically they differ subtly (Babar birds are slightly darker above, less extensively cinnamon below), the two have consistently different songs. Moreover, across 132 playback experiments, we find that both populations always ignore allopatric song but typically respond to sympatric song. On the basis that these lines of evidence likely represent barriers to reproduction, we consider the population on the Babar Islands to be taxonomically distinct from that on the Tanimbar Islands. In the absence of an available name, we describe it as a new species.

Diagnosis.—Differs from Tanimbar R. fuscorufa in its consistently darker forehead, crown, nape, mantle and back that are often discernible in the field (pers. obs.); it also has, on average, less extensive buffish on the underparts, being largely confined to the belly (not extending to the lower breast). The most pronounced difference, however, is in the two species' song: R. fuscorufa delivers strophes of 8–18 staccato whistles which randomly change in pitch, while R. laguceria emits a series of 6–8 notes that steadily ascend in pitch (Fig. 4). Birds on each island are unresponsive to allopatric song.

Northern Fantail Rhipidura [rufiventris] hoedti (of Romang, Damar, Leti, Moa and Sermata) and R. [r.] assimilis (Kai Islands)—sometimes recognised specifically as Banda Sea Fantail and Kai Fantail respectively (Eaton et al. 2016, 2021, del Hoyo & Collar 2016)—has an obvious white-streaked grey breast-band, greyer head and upperparts (with a much broader supercilium in assimilis), plain wings lacking extensive cinnamon, much less richly coloured belly (appearing almost whitish in hoedti and pale buff in assimilis) and white (not cinnamon) outertail feathers. They also have very different vocalisations (Eaton et al. 2021).

Etymology.—Because the pleasing song of this taxon is its most distinctive attribute, we name the species for its vocalisations (lagu ceria = Indonesian for ‘cheerful song’). We employ the name as a noun in apposition.

Vernacular names.—While the English names ‘Tanimbar Fantail’ and ‘Babar Fantail’ are ostensibly appropriate for R. fuscorufa s. s. and R. laguceria respectively, the Tanimbar islands host two other sympatric fantail species—Supertramp Fantail R. semicollaris and Long-tailed Fantail R. opistherythra—the second of which is also endemic to the islands. Accordingly, we prefer the English names ‘Trembling Fantail’ for R. fuscorufa and ‘Cheerful Fantail’ for R. laguceria, given that their distinctive vocalisations have led us to propose separating them taxonomically.

Geographic distribution.—Endemic to Babar, Indonesia, and perhaps occurs too on the island's five small satellites, although these have not been explored ornithologically.

[Ichthyology • 2025] Coloconger paucitubus • Species of the Eel Family Colocongridae (Order Anguilliformes), with Description of a New Species

 Abstract  
The short-tail eel family Colocongridae is a group of small to moderately large eels found in the mid- to upper-continental slope of all oceans except the eastern and central Pacific. The taxonomy of this group is still poorly known, and many diagnostic characteristics have never been tested and verified. Museum specimens were examined, and data were taken by following methods provided in previous studies, as well as some newly introduced. A total of seven species are recorded for the only genus, Coloconger, including a new species described herein from the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. The diagnostic characters distinguishing species of Coloconger are discussed, comments are made on previous records, and a key to all known species is provided. Morphology of the post-metamorphic stage and transforming leptocephalus is also provided.

English name: Solomon Short-tailed Conger

Diagnosis.—A species of Coloconger that differs from its congeners by having relatively few head sensory pores, total head pores usually 30–34, with 1 or 2 SO over posterior nostrils, IO usually 9 or 10, POM usually 11 or 12, and ST consistently 3; PDV 13–18, PAV 76–86, and TV 141–150; mouth cavity dark blue and gill chamber uniformly dark brown; rictus reaching vertical through posterior margin of pupil to posterior margin of eye; no anterior intermaxillary teeth; and body uniformly light brown to black, with lateral-line tubes darkened.

Etymology.—The specific name is a combination of Latin pauci (few) and tubus (tube), referring to the diagnostic low sensory tube (pore) count on the head in comparison to other species of the genus. A noun in apposition.

[Herpetology • 2025] Iguanas rafted more than 8,000 km from North America to Fiji

Abstract
Founder-event speciation can occur when one or more organisms colonize a distant, unoccupied area via long-distance dispersal, leading to the evolution of a new species lineage. Species radiations established by long-distance, and especially transoceanic, dispersal can cause substantial shifts in regional biodiversity. Here, we investigate the occurrence and timing of the greatest known long-distance oceanic dispersal event in the history of terrestrial vertebrates—the rafting of iguanas from North America to Fiji. Iguanas are large-bodied herbivores that are well-known overwater dispersers, including species that colonized the Caribbean and the Galápagos islands. However, the origin of Fijian iguanas had not been comprehensively tested. We estimated the phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary timescale of the iguanid lizard radiation using genome-wide exons and ultraconserved elements (UCEs). Those data indicate that the closest living relative of extant Fijian iguanas is the North American desert iguana and that the two taxa likely diverged during the late Paleogene near or after the onset of volcanism that produced the Fijian archipelago. Biogeographic models estimate North America as the most probable ancestral range of Fijian iguanas. Our analyses support the hypothesis that iguanas reached Fiji via an extraordinary oceanic dispersal event from western North America, and which spanned a fifth of the earth’s circumference (>8,000 km). Overwater rafting of iguanas from North America to Fiji strengthens the importance of founder-event speciation in the diversification of iguanids and elucidates the scope of long-distance dispersal across terrestrial vertebrates.

Significance: Transoceanic dispersal to far-away islands is an important mechanism for the generation of new species lineages and biotas and has captivated scientists since at least the time of Darwin. Determining whether and how such events occur is challenging, particularly for hypothesized dispersals spanning thousands of kilometers. We addressed the enigmatic occurrence of Fijian iguanas via phylogenomic and biogeographic analyses, providing strong evidence that iguanas rafted >8,000 km from North America as early as the Paleogene. This represents the longest documented transoceanic dispersal in terrestrial vertebrates. Our findings elaborate on the importance of long-distance dispersal in the diversification of iguanids. Iguanid lizards display a propensity for overwater dispersal, which could stimulate further research into the predictability of these incredible biogeographic events.

[Herpetology • 2024] Hylarana nigroverrucosa • Two Distinct Ranid Frog Lineages (Anura: Hylarana) from Halmahera, Northern Moluccas, with the Description of a New Species

 Abstract  
We revise the systematics of the ranid frogs of the genus Hylarana occurring on Halmahera Island, Northern Moluccas of eastern Indonesia based on molecular and morphological data. Our results show that two distinct species each being nested within two distinct clades (hereafter papua clade and celebensis clade) exist on the island. One corresponds to H. moluccana (celebensis clade) and the other one to an unnamed species (papua clade) that we describe herein. The new species is genetically distinct from all congeners of the papua clade by p distances ranging from 6.9% to 11.5% on the 16S rRNA gene. Morphologically, the new species can be distinguished from all congeners by having the following combination of characteristics: A large species with adult males reaching a maximum snout-to-vent length (SVL) 67.3 mm; vomerine teeth in two oblique rows with narrow interodontophore distance; snout rounded dorsally; dorsum with few scattered cone-shaped tubercles that are black with white tips; distinct skin folds (ridges) on the dorsal side of the thigh coinciding with dark brown cross bars; a marbled pattern on the ventral side of thigh and yellowish groin. Here we provide a redescription for H. moluccana based on its lectotype from Ternate. We also provide new occurrence records for H. daemeli, H. volkerjane, and H. arfaki from the western part of mainland Papua. Furthermore, we demonstrated that H. celebensis harbors multiple mtDNA lineages suggestive of cryptic diversity within the celebensis clade. The occurrence of two distinct species from Halmahera calls for further research on the biogeographic history of Hylarana in Northern Moluccas.

[Herpetology • 2024] Cyrtodactylus mamberamo • A New Species of Narrow-banded Cyrtodactylus (Gekkonidae) from northern New Guinea

Abstract
We describe a new species of Cyrtodactylus from the northern lowlands and foothills of mainland New Guinea. Cyrtodactylus mamberamo sp. nov. is distinguished from all other Melanesian Cyrtodactylus except C. aaroni and C. mimikanus by the combination of moderate size (max SVL <100 mm), widened subcaudals, dorsal pattern of numerous narrow light bands with dark-brown anterior borders, and a tripartite pore arrangement in males. It differs from these two most-similar species in details of colour pattern, scalation and the number of precloacal pores. Cyrtodactylus mamberamo sp. nov. occurs at elevations between 0–870 m above sea level (a.s.l.) across a wide area spanning the Mamberamo Basin and nearby regions. It co-occurs with at most one or two other congeners. Low Cyrtodactylus alpha diversity across Melanesia emphasises beta turnover as the key factor underpinning species richness in this genus. The new species brings the total number of recognised Melanesian Cyrtodactylus to 35, with the real total certain to be over 40 species.

Abstract
Thismia (Thismiaceae), whose distributions are currently known from Asia, Australia, and South America, is newly recorded in the Solomon Islands. Through extensive field explorations, three new species of Thismia were discovered in the rainforest of the Solomon Islands and are herein delineated as T. occasa, T. chicoreoides, and T. solomonensis, all belonging to sect. Sarcosiphon. Comprehensive species descriptions, line drawings, and color plates are furnished for each species, accompanied by a distribution map delineating their respective ranges.

Thismia occasa T.C.Hsu, S.W.Chung & C.W.Lin, sp. nov. 

Diagnosis: Among the species in Thismia sect. Sarcosiphon, T. occasa is most similar to T. crocea in habit and flower colour, but it is different in its larger mitre approximately 1/2.5 (vs. 1/3–1/4) the length of the whole flower, mitre with 3 impressed sutures (vs. nearly connate), annulus formed by 6 low rectangular lobes (vs. 6 rounded, bilamellate lobes), stamens pendent from the apical margin of the floral tube (vs. sunken inside the floral tube), and lateral appendage bilobed (vs. more or less truncate). 

Etymology: The specific epithet "occasa" is derived from the orange-red flower that imparts a sunset hue.

Diagnosis: Similar to Thismia viridistriata as it possesses a blackish-brown-tinged flower adorned with verrucose or finger-like protrusions, however, T. chicoreoides is different in its perianth inside with 12 vertical flat (vs. partly detached from its surface) ribs, apical end of individual connective slightly verrucose (vs. several hairs ca. 0.15–0.2 mm long), lateral appendage central lobe being largest (vs. smallest) and stigma lobes triangular (vs. inverted trapezoid). 

Etymology: The specific epithet "chicoreoides" refers to the verrucose flower, which resembles the appearance of some species of Chicoreus, such as C. paini Houart. 


Thismia solomonensis S.W.Chung, T.C.Hsu & C.W.Lin, sp. nov.  

Diagnosis: Thismia solomonensis resembles T. nigra in vegetative characters. However, the new species differs from the latter in its shorter stem, 2–12 mm tall (vs. up to 80 mm), yellowish-bronze perianth coloration (vs. blackish-tinged), unlobed individual connectives (vs. 2 small lobes), and a glabrous apex (vs. several long hairs in the middle). 

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to the Solomon Islands, where the new species was discovered.

[Entomology • 2020] Bulasconotus scaccarius • A New Species of cylindrical Bark Beetle (Coleoptera: Zopheridae: Colydiinae) from Vanuatu establishes in Hawaii

Abstract
We describe Bulasconotus scaccarius sp. nov.a new species of cylindrical bark beetle (Zopheridae: Colydiinae: Synchitini), elevating the number of described species in its genus to two. Despite discovering this species in Hawaii, we suspect, based on collections and survey data, that it is endemic to the South Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu and has only recently arrived in Hawaii. Evidence of the diet of closely related genera indicates that the new species may be a predator of ambrosia beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae), conceivably posing a risk to those that are endemic to Hawaii.

Bulasconotus scaccarius sp. nov.

Etymology. The specific epithet is the adjective form of the nominative singular noun scaccarium, meaning a chessboard, in reference to the chequered pattern on the elytra. This name thereby conforms to article 11.9.1.1 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Because the adjective suffix agrees with the masculinity of the generic name, the binomial name also conforms to article 31.2 even though the eponym is neuter.

[Invertebrate • 2024] Benthogenia mahi • Revision of the Genus Benthogenia Fisher, 1911 (Echinodermata: Asteroidea: Porcellanasteridae), with Description of A New Species and ossicle anatomy

Porcellanasteridae Sladen, 1883 is a family of mud-dwelling sea stars, living in bathyal and abyssal environments. Among the twelve currently recognized genera of this family, Benthogenia Fisher, 1911 is the only one known occurring at depth shallower than 1000 m. Benthogenia differs from all other porcellanasterids by having cribriform organs between all its marginals, from the disc to the tip of the arms. Benthogenia cribellosa Fisher, 1911 is reported from a locality as shallow as 111 m, and a new species, Benthogenia mahi n. sp., is described from material housed in the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris (MNHN). Benthogenia mahi n. sp. is represented by twelve specimens, collected at depth ranging from 400 to 1200 m during four different expeditions. Benthogenia cribellosa is represented by two specimens from the MNHN, plus the holotype and two specimens from the National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institution), Washington D.C. Benthogenia mahi n. sp. differs from B. cribellosa mostly by having more robust arms, fewer oral and adambulacral spines, and by the cribriform organs not covering the entire surface of the superomarginals of the disc. Molecular data (16S rDNA) were also used as an independent dataset to test for divergence between the two species. Benthogenia mahi n. sp. occurs in New Caledonia, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, whereas B. cribellosa is only known from the Philippines. Detailed descriptions of both species are provided, as well as a detailed description of the skeleton of the new species.

Abstract
Fiji is an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean from which only four species in four genera of Tetrigidae had previously been reported. We report the results of our examination of the Fijian Tetrigidae from the Queensland Museum, Brisbane, and additionally the Nederlands Centrum voor Biodiversiteit (Naturalis Biodiversity Center, formerly Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum Naturalis), Leiden. The Fijian fauna is found to be similar to, and therefore likely derived from, the New Guinean fauna. The validity of Asian Metrodorinae is called into question. [Botany • 2023] Goniothalamus hmoope (Annonaceae) • A Third Species of Goniothalamus from New Caledonia and Lectotypification of G. obtusatus

A new species is described from New Caledonia in the genus Goniothalamus, which now includes three endemic species from the archipelago. The new species was first collected over 150 years ago, but had not been subsequently studied until now. Material of the New Caledonian taxa was included in a recent molecular phylogeny, which shows that they are related and belong to the same clade, but they are easily distinguished from one another by morphology. Goniothalamus hmoope sp. nov. differs from G. obtusatus by its smaller leaves and its monocarps that are terete and 3-8 seeded (vs narrowly ellipsoid, ellipsoid, subglobose to obovoid, 1-3-seeded), and from G. dumontetii by its flat leaves with plane secondary veins (versus slightly bullate with impressed venation), and its monocarps that are terete (vs flattened elongate with lateral triangular projections). The new species, which is restricted to the North Province and can be abundant in the Mt. Panié range, was assessed by the New Caledonian Red List Authority as Vulnerable (VU) based on the IUCN Red List criteria.

Goniothalamus hmoope Munzinger & D.M. Johnson, sp. nov.

Goniothalamus species distinguished from congeners by the combination of a truncate apex of the anther connective, narrowly cylindrical and slightly bifid funnel-shaped stigma, narrowly oblong (dactyliform), torulose monocarps with up to eight seeds, and mucilaginous trichomes on the testa.

Vernacular name. — Hmoope (Nemi language) (Munzinger 2013).

Etymology. — The specific epithet refers to the vernacular name.

[Herpetology • 2023] Varanus louisiadensis & V. tanimbar • Two New Species of Monitor Lizards (Squamata: Varanidae) endemic to the Louisiade and Tanimbar Archipelagos with A Key to the Subgenus Euprepiosaurus

ABSTRACT
We describe two new species of Varanus, one each endemic to the Louisiade and Tanimbar Archipelagos in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, respectively. The new species belong to the subgenus Euprepiosaurus and, therein, to the widely distributed and relatively species-rich Varanus indicus group. They can be distinguished from all other recognised species by scalation, colour-pattern and genetic differences. The new species from Tanimbar is most closely related to V. indicus and V. melinus, from which it can be distinguished by its dark blue/grey tongue and higher middorsal and midventral scale counts. The new species from the Louisiades can be distinguished from its phylogenetically and geographically nearest relative, V. chlorostigma, by the presence of dorsal crossbands, the mostly pink tongue mottled with grey, and higher midbody scale count. The Louisiades constitute the easternmost archipelago of Milne Bay Province in eastern Papua New Guinea, and they host a diverse herpetofauna with a high degree of endemism; Varanus louisiadensis sp. nov. increases the known number of herpetofaunal endemics in that archipelago to 60. The Tanimbar Islands are situated in the southern part of Maluku Province (Moluccas), Indonesia, and are a minor centre of vertebrate endemism; Varanus tanimbar sp. nov. increases the number of known herpetofaunal endemics there to six.

Varanus louisiadensis sp. nov.

Diagnosis: Varanus louisiadensis sp. nov. is a member of the subgenus Euprepiosaurus, which is defined by having the unique combination of an asymmetric sperm groove on the hemipenis and a laterally compressed tail (Ziegler et al. Citation2007). Molecular phylogenetic analyses place it within the V. indicus species group defined by the unilateral paryphasmata ornamentation of the hemipenis and lack of blue pigmentation on the tail (Ziegler et al. Citation2007; Weijola et al. Citation2019). It can be distinguished from all other species of Euprepiosaurus by its unique combination of: (1) dorsum black with more-or-less well-defined crossbands composed of yellow ocelli and/or dots, better defined in juveniles and subadults than adults; (2) tail black with distinct yellow bands, better defined in juveniles and subadults than adults; (3) tongue tines and a variable section of the mid-dorsal tongue surface dark grey, the remainder being pink; (4) pink-orange pigmentation usually present on cheeks and sides of neck; (5) venter pale yellow; (6) mid-body scale rows (S) 142–163; (7) mid-dorsal scale rows (XY) 139–169; (8) ventral scale rows (T) 101–113; (9) scales around neck (m) 101–118.

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to the Louisiade Archipelago of Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea, where this species is endemic.

Etymology: The specific epithet tanimbar is a noun in apposition and refers to the Tanimbar Archipelago of Maluku, Indonesia, to which this species is endemic.

[Herpetology • 2023] Litoria azuroscelis • A New large Green Treefrog (Anura: Pelodryadidae) from western New Guinea, with the Description of A New Diagnostic Character for the Litoria graminea Group

Abstract
 The Litoria graminea group currently consists of seven nominal species of large, predominately green canopy-associated treefrogs from New Guinea and surrounding islands. Here, we first describe a character that appears to diagnose this species group from the similarly large and green Litoria infrafrenata group, specifically nuptial pads comprised of relatively large asperities versus more numerous and tiny asperities. We then describe a new species of this group from the Wondiwoi Mountains at the base of the Wandammen Peninsula in Indonesian New Guinea. The new species differs from other members of the Litoria graminea group in aspects of body proportions, extent of hand webbing, colouration, and size and shape of the male nuptial pad. Discovery of this new species emphasises the until-recently overlooked pattern of multiple co-occurring species of large, green and highly arboreal Litoria in lowland and foothill rainforest areas across much of New Guinea. Over 40 species of frogs were documented in the vicinity of the type locality, emphasising the high species richness of forests on the Wandammen Peninsula.

Diagnosis. A treefrog that differs from other New Guinean Litoria in the following unique combination of characters: body large (adult male SVL to at least 66.6 mm) and robust; vomero-palatines large, prominently raised, each with ~6 small teeth; labial stripe narrow, white, not extending beyond rictus of jaw; dorsum in life predominantly or entirely dark green; enlarged parotoid glands absent; scapular region lacking deep skin creases; webbing on hands extending slightly beyond distal edge of subarticular tubercles at base of penultimate phalanges on inside of Finger 4 and outside of Finger 3; webbing on feet extending to discs on all toes except Toe 4, where it reaches to midway between disc and subarticular tubercle at base of penultimate phalanx; discs very wide (3FD/SVL 0.073–0.074; 4TD/SVL 0.067–0.069); nuptial pads elongate, broader anteriorly than posteriorly, comprised of distinct almost conical asperities; hidden surfaces of limbs purplish blue in life; iris reddish brown; upper half of nictitating membrane largely clear except for dark dorsal margin; and advertisement call consisting of a harsh note (= call) produced singly or more often in series of 2–7 calls with a mean repetition rate of 2.02 calls/s.


Etymology. Named after the colouration on the hidden surfaces of the hindlimbs, from the combination of the Greek azur (deep blue) and scelis, latinised version of Greek skelos (leg).
