[Botany • 2026] Goniothalamus metadoxus & Uvaria chrysoflora • Two New Species of Annonaceae from Papua New Guinea

 Abstract 
Two new species of Annonaceae bearing unique or unusual morphologies are described and illustrated from Papua New Guinea. Goniothalamus metadoxus Ezedin, from the Papuan Peninsula, exhibits an extraordinary reduction of the outer petals resulting in an inverted floral morphology where the inner petals appear larger and more prominent. It is further distinguished by its long pedicels, inner petals bearing a densely sericeous indument giving a silvery-white sheen, and long apiculate staminal connectives that are pinkish-lavender in color. Uvaria chrysoflora Ezedin, from the Sepik River basin, is unique in bearing greenish-yellow flowers, making it the first non-red flowered species of its genus from Papuasia. It most closely resembles the widespread U. concava Teijsm. & Binn. and can be further distinguished from the latter by its smaller leaves and larger flowers.

Goniothalamus metadoxus Ezedin, sp. nov. 

Diagnosis — Goniothalamus metadoxus resembles G. caloneurus Miq. in having similar leaf shape and siZe, oblong monocarps, and nearly subequal outer and inner petal siZes but differs in its habit being a small to medium tree up to 15 m tall (vs. shrub up to c. 4 m tall), laminas being chartaceous (vs. coriaceous), secondary veins not impressed above and not prominent below (vs. impressed above, prominent below), cauliflorous fasciculate inflorescences (vs. ramiflorous and solitary), inner petals being longer than the outer (vs. outer petals longer), and the petals silvery-white (vs. yellow-orange).

Etymology — From Greek meta, altered, and doxus, appearance; in reference to the inner petals being longer than the outer petals due to pronounced reduction of the latter.

Diagnosis — Uvaria chrysoflora resembles U. concava Teijsm. & Binn. in having subglabrous young stems and shortly pedunculate flowers with concave petals, but differs in its yellow-green petals (vs. maroon), petals not conspicuously incurved at apices (vs. strongly incurved), larger flowers measuring 35–50 mm across (vs. c. 18–30 mm), and smaller leaves measuring 10–12 × 5.5–6.5 cm (vs. c. 12–15 × 6–7 cm).

Etymology — From Greek chryso, golden, and Latin flora, flower; in reference to the yellowish-green flowers.

[Ichthyology • 2026] Solenostomus snuffleupagus • A hairy Ghost Pipefish (Syngnathiformes: Solenostomidae) from the Southwest Pacific, with an integrative comparison to S. paegnius

Abstract
A new species of ghost pipefish, Solenostomus snuffleupagus sp. nov., is described from the Coral Sea based on specimens (18–34 mm SL) collected from coral reef habitats in Queensland, Australia. The species is diagnosed by the following combination of characters: abundant elongate integumentary filaments imparting a conspicuously shaggy appearance; 36 total vertebrae (vs. 32–34 in all congeners); compact body form with a short, deep pretrunk (11%–14% SL); sexually dimorphic supraoccipital crests (moderately elevated in females, strongly developed in males); and two modified anchor-like ossicles spanning the pterygiophores in both soft dorsal and anal fins. Micro-CT imaging reveals distinctive pretrunk ossicle configuration characterized by deep angular interspaces and absence of a ventral ossicle series. Mitochondrial COI sequences indicate an uncorrected p-distance of 22.0% from the superficially similar S. paegnius, a species with which it has long been confused in museum collections and citizen science databases. Field observations document consistent association with dense filamentous red macroalgae, with body coloration closely matching host substrate. The species is currently known from the southwest Pacific, including northeastern Australia (Coral Sea), Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga, representing a southwestern Pacific distribution.

Diagnosis: A species of Solenostomus distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: body compact and vertically deep anteriorly; pretrunk deep (24.4%–29.2% SL); abundant, elongate integumentary filaments conferring a conspicuously shaggy appearance, particularly dense on snout, jaws, head and fin extremities; pretrunk ossicles are narrow and elongated, separated by deep angular interspaces, forming a distinctive compact lattice; There are total 36 vertebrae. The supraoccipital crest is elevated and rounded in females, but strongly pronounced in males. There are two modified anchor-like ossicles spanning the pterygiophores in both the soft dorsal fin (19–20 rays) and anal fin (18–19 rays). The soft dorsal fin has 19–20 rays, the anal fin has 18–19 rays, the pectoral fin has 27 rays, the caudal fin has 15 rays.

Etymology: The specific epithet snuffleupagus refers to the shaggy character Mr. Snuffleupagus, also known as ‘Snuffy’, from the children's television series Sesame Street™, in allusion to the species' distinctly shaggy, filamentous appearance and snout reminiscent of the character's covering and trunk. The name is treated as a noun in apposition (ICZN Article 31.1.2).

[Ichthyology • 2021] Lethrinus mitchelli • A New Species of Emperor Fish (Acanthuriformes: Lethrinidae) from Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea

Abstract 
A new species of emperor fish, Lethrinus mitchelli, is described on the basis of three specimens, 109.4–111.3 mm SL, collected from 20 m at the East Cape region of Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. It is similar to the sympatric relatives L. semicinctus and L. rubrioperculatus, but differs in color pattern and has a narrower cheek (cheek height 3.2–3.6 in head length vs. 2.4–2.9). Other diagnostic features include head length (2.7 in SL) greater than body depth (3.0–3.1 in SL); the snout excluding the lip 1.3–1.4 in cheek height; the snout profile nearly straight, without a prominent hump, and about 55° to the upper jaw; conical lateral jaw teeth; the interorbital area nearly flat or convex; the fourth dorsal-fin spine longest; lateral-line scales 47; transverse scale rows below and above the lateral line 15 and 4.5 rows; and a fully-scaled area adjacent to the prominent bony spine at the posteriormost margin of the opercle (excluding fleshy flap). The new species has a distinctive color pattern: brown dorsally, whitish ventrally, with a broad, brown, posteriorly tapering band on the midlateral body, partially split anteriorly by a relatively broad, ascending diagonal white band. Lethrinus mitchelli is 6.11% sequence divergent (pairwise) in the mtDNA COI marker from its nearest relative, L. semicinctus, also from the East Indies. A table of COI divergences among mtDNA lineages assigned to 27 of the 28 known species of Lethrinus shows a set of distinctly different lineages, from 3.32% to 20.85% divergent from each other (minimum interspecific distances).

Abstract
The fauna of Aradidae or flat bugs of New Guinea Island is still insufficiently explored and studied. The Mezirinae, the largest subfamily of tropical Aradidae, has 25 genera recorded to date from New Guinea Island, and only one species Artabanellus mcnamarai Kormilev, 1967 is apterous. Now a striking new specimen of apterous Mezirinae has come to light, its habitus resembling species of the Madagascan genus Chlonocoris. However, because it cannot be placed in any extant genus of Aradidae, Neochlonocoris sepicus new genus and new species are described.

[Botany • 2025] Cyrtandra loratiloba (Gesneriaceae) • A Species New to Science from Indonesian New Guinea

Summary
Cyrtandra loratiloba Bramley is presented here as new to science. Due to its unusually narrow, ‘strap-shaped’ corolla lobes, large staminodes and the atypical insertion of the fertile stamen pair in the corolla mouth at the base of the three, lower corolla lobes, C. loratiloba is immediately distinct from any known Cyrtandra species. A full description, distribution map, illustration, photo plate and preliminary conservation assessment are provided.

Recognition. The pale greenish-yellow coloration of the corolla, the waxy texture and almost patent angle at which the three strap-shaped lower lobes are held, in combination with the staminodes, which protrude from the mouth of the corolla, each at a transverse angle so their ends cross, make this species unique in Cyrtandra. In addition, the stamens are inserted at the corolla mouth, at the point at which the lower lobes protrude from the corolla tube; in Cyrtandra it is typical for the stamens to be inserted lower down the tube. In flower, it is immediately distinct to any other Cyrtandra, with no obvious similar species.

Etymology. The epithet ‘loratiloba’ refers to the unusually narrow, ‘strap-shaped’ corolla lobes characteristic of this species.

[Ornithology • 2025] Ptilorrhoa urrissia • A New Species of Jewel-babbler (Passeriformes: Cinclosomatidae: Ptilorrhoa) from the Southern Fold Mountains of Papua New Guinea

Abstract
Based on distinctive morphological and vocal characters we describe a new species of jewel-babbler (genus Ptilorrhoa) from the forested karst of the Southern Fold Mountains in Papua New Guinea. The description is based on camera trap data and is presented in accordance with ICZN Declaration 45. The new species is currently known only from the type locality at the top of Iagifu Ridge (1335–1400 m above sea level), a limestone anticline isolated from the main body of New Guinea's central cordillera, where it is uncommon. Given the importance of competitive exclusion in determining Ptilorrhoa distributions, and the near ubiquitous occurrence of congeners, we speculate that Iagifu Ridge may support part of a highly fragmented population that occupies isolated low mountains that do not support Ptilorrhoa leucosticta of higher elevations. Potentially suitable sites may be restricted to the area between Mt Bosavi and Mt Karimui in southern Papua New Guinea.

The holotype (a–c, marked ‘h’ in (a)) and one paratype (a and d, marked ‘p’ in (a)), putative adult female and juvenile with female-type plumage, respectively, were photographed together on 1 January 2020; the images shown are part of a sequence of 20 photographs taken over a period of 87 s. The putative adult male paratype (e) was photographed less than 40 m away on 8 March 2020.

Diagnosis: Table 1 compares in detail the morphological features of adult P. urrissia with those of its congeners – P. geislerorum and the locally occurring subspecies of P. caerulescens, P. castanonota and P. leucosticta. Figure 5 shows examples of the compared taxa.

Etymology: The name ‘urrissia’ is a noun in apposition. ‘Uri urrissia’ (= ‘mount urrissia’) is the Namo Me (also known as Fasu) language name applied to Iagifu Ridge by the local Fasol clan landowners.

[Herpetology • 2025] Litoria stellarum • A New montane Species of Stream-dwelling Treefrog (Anura: Pelodryadidae) from the Star Mountains, Papua New Guinea

Abstract
We describe a new species of pelodryadid treefrog from a montane stream traversing karst terrain in the Star Mountains of western Papua New Guinea. Litoria stellarum sp. nov. is morphologically similar to L. becki (Loveridge, 1945), a species that is widespread in montane grassland habitats in central Papua New Guinea, but can be distinguished by its more angular snout and the presence of vocal slits in adult males (absent in L. becki). Based on its morphology and ecology we are confident the new species belongs to a monophyletic clade of torrent-breeding Litoria that reaches its greatest diversity in the rugged mountains of New Guinea’s Central Cordillera. Litoria stellarum sp. nov. is the second species in the radiation of torrent-breeding Litoria to be described from high-elevation karst habitats in Papua New Guinea, however in the absence of better ecological data it is not clear whether these species can be considered karst specialists. The single known locality for the species is in a restricted high elevation habitat suggesting it might be vulnerable to climate change. However, we suggest it should be considered Data Deficient until such time as its distribution and ecology can be better assessed.

Etymology. stellarum is a latin genitive plural of Stella (star), meaning of the stars, referring to this species’only known locality high in Papua New Guinea’s Star Mountains.

[Ichthyology • 2025] Eviota vader • A New western Pacific Dwarfgoby (Gobiiformes: Gobiidae) from Papua New Guinea

Abstract 
A new species of dwarfgoby, Eviota vader, is described from McLaren Fjord, Tufi, Papua New Guinea. The new species is characterized by a distinctive purplish-black coloration not found on any other species of dwarfgoby. In addition to the unusual color, it is diagnosed by the combination of a complete cephalic sensory-canal pore system, a dorsal/anal fin-formula of 8/7, some branched pectoral-fin rays, the fifth pelvic-fin ray present, and no dark occipital spots or any dark spots at the base of dorsal or caudal fins. The species is apparently endemic to the Tufi region of Papua New Guinea, a location known to have microendemic species.

Diagnosis. A species of Eviota distinguished from all congeners by a combination of a complete cephalic sensory-canal pore system (pattern 1), a dorsal/anal fin-ray formula 8/7, some pectoral-fin rays branched, fifth pelvic-fin ray present, no dark occipital spots or any dark spots at the base of dorsal or caudal fins, and a broad and fringed male urogenital papilla. Entire body and fins purplish black.

Etymology. The specific epithet is derived from the fictional dark figure Darth Vader in the Star Wars movie franchise (Fig. 3), referring to the fact that it is the darkest of all described dwarfgobies. It is treated as a noun in apposition.

[Botany • 2025] Alpinia arachniformis (Zingiberaceae) • A New Species from New Ireland, Papua New Guinea

Abstract
During explorations of the ginger flora of the Bismarck Archipelago in 2013 and 2023, we made collections of the ginger genus Alpinia sensu lato, some of which had unusually elongated cincinni composed of distichously arranged bracteoles and in the present paper we conclude that these collections document a distinct species new to science, Alpinia arachniformis A.D.Poulsen. The choice of epithet refers to the spider-like appearance of the inflorescence. Similar morphology of the cincinni is found in other lineages of Alpinia, but our molecular analysis using the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) marker established a close relationship with A. oceanica from which the new species differs by having cincinni with more flowers and linear labellum. An ink drawing and colour plates, information on distribution and habitat, and provisional conservation status are provided for the new species as well as a key to species of Alpinia in the Bismarck Archipelago.

Diagnosis: Similar to Alpinia oceanica Burkill in the vegetative characters but differs by the erect inflorescence (vs mostly pendulous); exposed distal peduncle (vs hidden within sheaths); cincinni laxly arranged (5–8 mm apart) along the rachis, 3–11 cm long with 2 mm long stalk at base and composed of up to 15 flowers (vs congested, 3–7 cm long, sessile, up to 7); and linear labellum with a retuse apex (vs narrowly triangular, apex truncate).

Etymology: The elongated cincinni suggest a spider-like resemblance.

Abstract
Two new species of Glyphodes Guenée, 1854 from Indonesia are proposed as new to science, namely Gnurfitriae sp. nov. and G. ahsanae sp. nov. The total number of recorded Glyphodes for Indonesia is 48 at present. Images of adults and genitalia are provided for both new species.

Glyphodes nurfitriae Sutrisno sp. nov.

Etymology. The specific name nurfitriae is derived from the name of the first daughter, Nur Fitria, of the senior author, Hari Sutrisno. This name is dedicated to her support during our preparing of this manuscript. A noun in the genitive case.

Distribution. Kwerba, Mt. Foja, Papua only (Indonesia).

Distribution. West Java, Southeast Sulawesi and North Sulawesi in Indonesia.

Abstract
Pacifimusotima kosrena Ko & Solis, gen. nov. & sp. nov., is described from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). We newly combine Parthenodes eugethes (Tams, 1935), comb. nov. and Parthenodes rectangulalis (Kenrick, 1907), comb. nov. in Pacifimusotima Ko & Solis. Illustrations of adults, genitalia, and brief remarks on related species are provided.

Etymology. The generic name is a combination of the prefix " Pacifi," from "Pacific Ocean," and the suffix " Musotima ," from the type genus " Musotima ". Gender is feminine.

[Ichthyology • 2024] Gobiodon cobenjaminsis & G. bicalvolineatus • Two New Species of Gobiodon (Gobiiformes: Gobiidae) from the Indo-Pacific, with Notes on South Pacific and Indian Ocean populations of Gobiodon spadix

Abstract
The gobiid genus Gobiodon contains small, cryptic coral dwelling fishes that are particularly diverse but difficult to identify. Herein we name and provide formal descriptions for two new species of Gobiodon, G. bicalvolineatus and G. cobenjaminsis, previously known as Gobiodon sp. B and Gobiodon sp. C respectively. Additionally, we provide new information on the South Pacific Ocean population of the recently described G. spadix, and a revised description of the genus Gobiodon. Both G. bicalvolineatus and G. cobenjaminsis are small, highly specialised and cryptic members of the genus found in limited geographic ranges in Papua New Guinea (PNG). On the basis of colouration, G. bicalvolineatus is diagnosed in having a light blue-green base colouration with red vertical bars on the face, red spots and lighter diagonal bars on the dorsal surface of the head, and thin unbroken horizontal lines along the length of the body. It has only been recorded inhabiting Acropora caroliniana in the Bootless Bay area of PNG. Gobiodon cobenjaminsis is light orange-brown in colour with pale vertical bars on the face, black edges on all fins except pectoral fins, and a black spot on the upper opercular margin. It has been recorded inhabiting Acropora elseyi in the Kimbe Bay area of PNG. We also provide morphological confirmation that the individuals previously referred to as Gobiodon sp. D observed in PNG and the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) are conspecific with the recently described G. spadix, along with additional measurements, characters, and habitat ecology. The latter includes their host preference for Acropora divaricata in the GBR and slight variation in morphometrics. The study utilises an interdisciplinary approach combining morphological characters, meristic and morphometric measurements, molecular genetics, and multivariate-statistical analysis of morphometric data to provide these descriptions and aid in the identification of these species.

Etymology. The commonly accepted source for Gobiodon comes from the Latin ‘gobius’ meaning gudgeon and the Greek ‘odous’ meaning teeth.

Gobiodon bicalvolineatus, new species 
English name: Speckle-Lined Coral Goby

Diagnosis. Dorsal-fin rays VI, I,10; anal-fin rays I,9–10; head and majority of body naked with some squamation on caudal peduncle; body slightly laterally compressed (body depth at pelvic-fin origin 40.6–45.3% SL), typically dorsal ventrally symmetrical, head rounded; mouth small with pronounced recurved lips; groove between isthmus and interopercle present; caudal peduncle relatively deep (15.5–18.6% SL); caudal fin long (22.1–29.3% of SL). Post symphysial teeth absent, triangular dentary with various sizes of jaw dentition. Elongate cheek papillae length exceeding width. Adults with blue-green base colouration and red markings on the face and body. Facial markings as vertical bars on cheek, small spots on dorsal surface of head and unbroken horizontal lines along the length of the body beginning post pectoral fin (Fig. 2).

 Etymology. The name is derived from the Latin for ‘two,’ ‘bald’ and ‘lined’, representing the two pale patches at the back of the head imitating baldness and the prominent lined pattern on the body.


Gobiodon cobenjaminsis, new species 
English name: Russet Coral Goby

Diagnosis. Dorsal-fin rays VI, I,10; anal-fin rays I,10; head and body naked; obvious groove between the isthmus and interopercle; body compressed and deep (depth at pelvic fin origin 39.4–45.0% of SL); head rounded in adults; dorsal fins fused with membrane. Caudal peduncle relatively deep (15.5–18.7% of SL); caudal fin long (22.2–29.3% of SL). Post symphysial teeth absent, dentary elongate and recurved; teeth of two to three various sizes in several rows. Cheek papillae elongate. Adult orange-brown in colour with black margins on all fins except pectoral fins. Black spot on the upper opercular margin (Fig. 5). Fins lighter in colour than body, with lighter oblique patch on cheek and 3–4 lighter bands on facial area.

Etymology. The name was chosen with the Latin “co” for ‘with’ or ‘together’ and the “benjaminsis”, with the “-sis” component derived from the Greek for a process or action, to honour the actions of the Benjamin family under the request of the specimen collector Phil Munday, especially Max Benjamin. This is due to their contribution in research, field station set-up, and marine conservation in Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea, that resulted in the observation and collection of this species.
