[Botany • 2021] Aloe uigensis (Asphodelaceae: Alooideae) • A New Species from northwestern Angola

Abstract
A new species of Aloe, A. uigensis (Asphodelaceae subfam. Alooideae), is described from northwestern Angola. It is a non-proliferous, single-stemmed species that bears narrowly elongated, acuminate racemes with orange to pale reddish flowers. Aloe uigensis is compared to some long-known as well as recently described species of Aloe from Angola, but does not have close relatives with which it can be confused in the country.

Etymology:— Aloe uigensis is named for the province of Uíge in northern Angola, from where the type specimen was collected.

[Botany • 2020] Aloe trinervis (Asphodelaceae) • A New Succulent Species from Indian Desert

Abstract
A new species of Aloe from the Indian Desert, India, is described and illustrated as Aloe trinervis sp. nov. The new species shows similarity with Aloe vera in having succulent, rosette leaves, persistent bracts, free tepals, and six stamens but differs in the recurved teeth instead of deltoid teeth on the leaf margins, 3-nerved bracts, branched and taller inflorescences (90–95 cm long), longer flowers of 31–34 mm in length, flowers with a pale green color being brownish at middle, and longer stamens (29–33 mm). A detailed description with data on its distribution and relevant taxonomic notes, comparative morphological, and color photo plate are provided for easy identification of the proposed new species, A. trinervis in relation to A. vera.

Diagnostic characters. Aloe trinervis sp. nov. shows similarity with Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f. in having succulent, rosulate leaves, persistent floral bracts, free tepals and six stamens but differs in the recurved teeth on the leaf margins, 3-nerved floral bracts, branched inflorescence (90–95 cm long), flowers 31–34 mm long, flowers pale green with brownish at middle, and longer stamens (29–33 mm).


Etymology. The species epithet trinervis refers to the three nerved floral bracts which are distinctive and unique to this new species.

Distribution. The type locality of the new taxon is the protected area of Shivbari-Jorbhir area, Bikaner, Rajasthan.

Conservation status. The new species is rare at the locality. Collected only from four different sites, the extent of occurrence is estimated to be less than 500 km2. So far, only a limited area of occurrence of this species has been found. Based on its area of occupancy and extent of occurrence of A. trinervis is assigned as “Endangered” (EN; criteria B1ab (i, ii) + B2ab (i, ii) at country level i.e. India). Detailed investigations are therefore needed to confirm its conservation status.

Ecology. It occurred on sandy gravelly plain and rocky terraces associated with other plant species such as Acacia senegal, Acacia nilotica, Euphorbia tirucalli, Opuntia dillenii, Prosopis cineraria, Prosopis juliflora, and Commiphora wightii

[Botany • 2019] Aloe sanguinalis (Asphodelaceae)Dacar Cas/Somali Red Aloe: A New Species of Aloe from Somaliland

Abstract
A new species of Aloe (Asphodelaceae) is described from Somaliland. It differs from other species in forming large clumps and in having sap that is initially yellow but quickly turns bright red and then dark red or reddish-brown, paniculate red-flowered inflorescences and uniformly coloured leaves with red teeth. Its recognition raises the number of species known from the combined area of Somaliland and Somalia s.s. from 31 to 36. A map portraying species density of Aloe by country, as that genus is now interpreted, shows that Aloe has its highest density on islands in the Indian Ocean but that, within Africa, the greatest density is in countries along the eastern highlands. The data also reinforce the importance of field botanists in determining a country’s known plant diversity.

Aloe sanguinalis Awale & Barkworth, sp. nov.

Type: SOMALILAND. Marodi Jeh (Maroodi Jeex), Hargeysa, Alala Adka, 15–20 km west of the town of Da’ar Buduk (Dacar Budhuq). Elevation 950 m, 9.8705N, 44.3761E (WGS84), 24 May 2017, Mary E. Barkworth S17.001, Ahmed Ibrahim Awale, Garrett Billings and Helen Pickering (holotype: HARG).

Diagnosis: Aloe sanguinalis differs from other species of Aloe in its combination of sap that is initially yellow but quickly turns bright red, drying to dark red or brownish-red, strong clump-forming habit, red teeth and paniculate inflorescence of well-spaced glabrous, red flowers.

Distribution: Aloe sanguinalis is currently known from only two locations, the type locality near Alala Adka and a more northern locality .... near the village of Lafarug. Larajasse (1897, p. 25), a Catholic missionary based in Berbera from 1888–1903, stated that “da’ar” refers to bile or an “aloe about three feet high, red and orange varieties, broad spiked fleshy leaves, spreading out from the ground; is a favorite food of elephants.” It seems probable, considering the species known from the area, that he was referring to A. sanguinalis. Elephants have not been seen in Somaliland since 1958.

Habitat and ecology: The two known locations of Aloe sanguinalis are open plains with sandy soils in which, among other species, Salvadora persica and Indigofera sparteola grow. The Alala Adka location is treeless but there are scattered Vachellia tortilis trees at the Lafarug site.

Etymology: The epithet is derived from sanguineus, Latin for blood, and refers to the colour of the sap which distinguishes it from all other species in the region.

[Botany • 2019] Kniphofia vandeweghei (Asphodelaceae) • A New Species of Kniphofia from Nyungwe National Park, Rwanda

Abstract
A new species, Kniphofia vandeweghei, is described and illustrated, and the differences with KprinceaeK. goetzei and K. paludosa are discussed. Distribution maps for Kvandeweghei and Kprinceae are provided. Kniphofia bequaertii, sometimes regarded as a synonym of Kgrantii, is considered to be a good species, and identification characters and distribution information are given. An identification key for all known Kniphofia species from Rwanda is provided.

[Botany • 2017] Aloe belitsakensis • A New Species (Asphodelaceae) from north-western Madagascar

Madagascar is a major centre of diversity for the leaf-succulent genus Aloe Linnaeus (1753: 319) accounting for roughly a third of Aloe species (Carter et al. 2011). Approximately 128 species and 161 taxa are known from the region and all are restricted to Madagascar (Rakotoarisoa et al. 2014) and/or the nearby Mascarene archipelago. New taxa are described from these islands at a rate that rivals the ongoing discovery of aloes elsewhere in their natural range, on the African continent or Arabian Peninsula (Crouch et al. 2013). Extinction risks are alarmingly high among species of Aloe in this region. Conservatively, 39% of species are known to be threatened, and this figure is likely to be significantly higher (Rakotoarisoa et al. 2014), since several species have not been observed or collected for many decades. The Kew Madagascar Conservation Centre (KMCC) aims to record and collect the rare and threatened flora of Madagascar to ensure its conservation, and the genus Aloe is a priority for the dryland programme.
