Henckelia moniliformis Sirim. sp. nov.

This new species is allied to Henckelia amplexifolia and H. nakianensis in having a campanulate corolla tube which is less than 1 cm long, but differs in having one caducous bract (two persistent bracts in H. amplexifolia and H. nakianensis), two flowers per inflorescence (vs mostly more than two flowers per inflorescence), calyx persistent (vs calyx caducous), two lobes of upper lip hooded (vs two lobes of upper lip straight), anthers with dense moniliform hairs only on the lower half (vs anthers glabrous), staminodes apparently lacking (vs present) and orthocarpic fruit (vs  plagiocarpic  fruit).  It  also  differs  from  H. amplexifolia in having a caulescent habit (acaulescent in H. amplexifolia) and lacking stolons (present in H. amplexifolia) and differs from H. nakianensis in having more than one leaf (only one leaf in H. nakianensis) and the curved filaments (filaments straight in H. nakianensis)

[Botany • 2024] Psychotria oxyalabastron (Rubiaceae) • A New Species and A New Record of Psychotria from Thailand

Psychotria oxyalabastron T.Srisuk & Chamch.,

in Srisuk, Chamchumroon, Chantaranothai et Pornpongrungrueng, 2024.
 พาโหมดง  || DOI: doi.org/10.20531/tfb.2024.52.2.16

Abstract
A new species, Psychotria oxyalabastron, is described, and P. laui is newly recorded from Thailand. The description, distribution area, ecological information and taxonomic note are provided.

Keywords: Gentianales, Psychotria laui, Psychotria oxyalabastron, Psychotrieae, Taxonomy

Psychotria oxyalabastron T.Srisuk & Chamch.:
A. flowering branch; B. stipules, outer surface; C. stipules, inner surface with hairs and colleters; D. floral bud; E. flower, dissection; F. pyrene, side view; G. pyrene, cross section; H. seed, dorsal view; J. seed, ventral view.
Materials A.–E. from Hansen & Smitinand 12045 (E); F.–J. from van Beusekom & Phengklai 925 (K). Drawn by T. Srisuk.

Psychotria oxyalabastron T.Srisuk & Chamch., sp. nov.

Psychotria oxyalabastron is similar to P. cambodiana Pierre ex Pit. in having tomentose, puberulous or pilose indumentum on branches and the lower leaf surface (at least on the venation), bifid or bilobed stipules, elliptic or oblanceolate laminas, loose corymbose-like thyrsiform inflorescences, and glabrous floral buds. However, it differs from P. cambodiana in the glabrous upper leaf surface (vs pilose), glabrous on intercostal areas on the lower leaf surface (vs pilose), acute floral bud apex with corolla protrusion (vs rounded floral bud apex without corolla protrusion), shorter corolla tube 1.3–1.4 mm long (vs 2–2.3 mm long), and the glabrous to sparsely puberulent ovary (vs tomentose or pilose).

Etymology.— The specific epithet ‘oxyalabastron’ refers to the acute shape of the floral bud, and is modified from the Greek “oxy-” for acute, combined with “alabastrum” for floral bud (alabastron = adjective form).
Vernacular.— Pha hom dong (พาโหมดง) (proposed here).

Abstract
Identified as Gardenia over a century ago, three known species from Thailand to south China differ considerably from typical members of that genus, from which growth habits, aspects of branch architecture and corolla shape set them apart. They form a new genus, here named Thaigardenia, the species of which are scrambling to thicket-forming shrubs to sometimes treelets or small trees. They have typically unequal (asymmetric) development of each internode that offsets what began as opposite pairs of axillary buds (and potential axillary branches) from subtending leaf axils at the same level, and small infundibular corollas with insignificant tubular bases. In contrast, typical Gardenia are non-scrambling shrubs or trees, often have extra-axillary buds or branches that consistently continue to develop at the same level (i.e., remaining opposite); and showy hypocrateriform (salverform) corollas with elongate tubular bases. The unequal development of different sides of an internode that brings an initially opposite pair of axillary buds (branches) to different levels, so that they do not appear paired subsequently, is, as far as is known, unique and unknown in other Rubiaceae or opposite-leaved plants; this shared feature is a key synapomorphic character for species of the newly recognised genus.

Keywords: Branch architecture, Gardenia, hypocrateriform, infundibular

Thaigardenia Sungkaew, Teerawat., Chamch. & K.M.Wong, gen. nov.

Thaigardenia is a new genus of the Rubiaceae, allied to Gardenia J.Ellis, differing in the species being shrubs with a scrambling to thicket-forming habit or small trees with crooked sympodial trunks (vs Gardenia s.s. which are mostly trees with monopodial trunks or non-thicket forming bushes), developing extra-axillary buds and branches at different distances from a leaf-pair at the same node on stems and branches (sometimes these extra-axillary buds more than one per leaf axil) (vs with extra-axillary buds and branches always at the same level, and solitary buds in Gardenia), broad-triangular stipules fused along their edges (vs typical Gardenia spp. with stipules fused into a cylindric sheath split slightly on one side), infundibular corolla with insignificant tubular bases much shorter than the inflated upper portion (vs hypocrateriform corollas with relatively long basal tubes with a hardly widened uppermost portion in Gardenia), and pollen issued as tetrads.

Type: Thaigardenia collinsiae (Craib) K.M.Wong, Teerawat. & Sungkaew.

Etymology.— The name Thaigardenia refers to Thailand, where studies into the taxonomy of this group were initiated, and where the generic type can be abundantly found, as well as Gardenia, the genus in which its species were earlier placed. Thailand has been eponymously included in the nomenclature of two other plant genera: Thaia Seidenf. (Orchidaceae) (Seidenfaden, 1975) and Thailentadopsis Kosterm. (Leguminosae) (Kostermans, 1977), both of which continue to be in use (Lewis & Schrire, 2003; Xiang et al., 2012).

Abstract
Globba amicitia (Zingiberaceae: Globbeae), a new species from Laos is described and illustrated. This species is morphologically most similar to G. larsenii, a species from Thailand, in having erect inflorescences and entirely yellow flowers without spots, but easily recognizable by its sessile cincinni and puberulent lateral staminodes. A proposed IUCN Red List assessment and notes on distinguishing characters are provided. A key to species of Globba subgenus Globba in the Indo-Chinese region is included.

Stemona fimbritepala Rakarcha, Pongamornkul & Thammar.,

in Rakarcha, Pongamornkul, Thammarong, Maknoi et Souvannakhoummane, 2020.

ABSTRACT
Stemona fimbritepala (Stemonaceae), a new species from northern Laos, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to S. hirtella and S. kerrii but clearly differs in longer peduncle, longer tepals, longer petaloid outgrowth of the connective and fimbriate margin of inner tepals. A detailed description, distribution, ecology, etymology, preliminary conservation status and photographs of this species are provided. A key to discriminate between the three hairy species is presented.
