[Botany • 2026] Cryptanthus pataxoanus & C. beuckeri • Two Ornamental Species of Cryptanthus (Bromeliaceae: Bromelioideae) on the brink of Extinction: A New Species and its congener from the 19th century

Abstract
The authors describe and illustrate a new species of CryptanthusC. pataxoanus, found within the Monte Pascoal National and Historical Park, and present new data on its closest morphological relative, C. beuckeri, both endemic to the Atlantic Forest of the state of Bahia, Brazil, and assessed as Critically Endangered (CR). The new taxon represents one of the most ornamental discoveries in recent years due to its marbled foliage, with contrasting greenish-yellow and dark green colors, which is similar to C. beuckeri. The main differences between C. pataxoanus and its closest relative include leaf blades not petiolate or the basal ones sometimes subpetiolate, the much broader portion of the blades distinctly longer, the narrower sepals covered by brown-centered trichomes, and petals without glandulose trichomes. The discovery of the new species results from cooperative work with the Pataxó indigenous community living in Barra Velha and Barra Velha do Monte Pascoal Indigenous Lands, located within the boundaries of the Monte Pascoal National and Historical Park. It symbolizes the inexhaustible richness of the Brazilian biodiversity in general and the Atlantic Forest of southern Bahia in particular, despite its current coexistence with high levels of threat.

 Cryptanthus pataxoanus Forzza & Leme, sp. nov.  

Diagnosis:—This new species can be distinguished from its morphologically closest relative, Cryptanthus beuckeri, by the leaf blades not petiolate or the basal ones sometimes subpetiolate, with subpetioles gradually merging into the much broader distal portion (vs. always distinctly petiolate, with petioles strongly contrasting with the much broader distal portion); the much broader portion of the blades longer (20–30 cm vs. 10–20 cm long); sepals with narrower lobes (vs. 2–2.5 mm vs. 3.5–4 mm wide) covered by distinctly brown-centered trichomes (vs. trichomes white); and petals without glandulose trichomes (vs. adaxially bearing glandulose trichomes).

Etymology:—The name of this new species honors the Pataxó indigenous people. They belong to the Macro-Jê linguistic family and have a long history of resistance, facing challenges such as reclaiming their traditional lands and promoting the value of their culture since the 16th century. The Pataxó predominantly inhabit the extreme south of Bahia, which includes the area of the Monte Pascoal National and Historical Park where the Barra Velha and Barra Velha do Monte Pascoal Indigenous Lands are located. They maintain strong traditions, such as the Patxohã language, rituals (like the Awê), and the use of body paintings that serve as cultural identifiers, in addition to promoting the conservation of the environment within their traditional natural territory.

[Herpetology • 2026] Allobates tanaruThe First Chlorotic Species of the Superfamily Dendrobatoidea: A New Nurse Frog of the Allobates albiventris Complex (Anura: Aromobatidae) with remarkably greenish hatchlings from Brazilian Amazonia

 Abstract -
While many frogs around the world have blue-green tissues because of the accumulation of a pigment called biliverdin, this had never been observed in nurse or poison frogs until now. In this study, we describe a new species of nurse frog from southwestern Amazonia that breaks new ground in Neotropical amphibian taxonomy: It is the first chlorotic species—with greenish hatchlings—ever recorded in the large superfamily Dendrobatoidea. Previously lumped within Allobates albiventris, integrative taxonomy reveals it as a distinct species, supported by a set of morphological and bioacoustic traits. It differs from most of its congeners by a call consisting of a pair of notes emitted in a single exhalation; males with lateral expansions on fingers II and III, and a white vocal sac covered with melanophores; dark brown oocytes, hatchlings with greenish yolk, and tadpoles with two or three short, pyramidal papillae distributed in a single row on each lateral margin of the anterior lip. Beyond its diagnostic features, this discovery is notable because chlorotic tissues were previously unknown in Dendrobatoidea, a superfamily with more than 350 species known for its terrestrial habitat, territoriality, carrying behavior, and nonchlorotic adults. The distinctive greenish hue seen in embryos of certain species, particularly in the new Allobates, may serve as an adaptation for predator avoidance, and it also highlights the ecological plasticity and morphological diversity within the genus. This opens fresh avenues to study the ecological, evolutionary, and developmental significance of biliverdin in frogs using a lineage wherein the biology contrasts with classic model species.

Allobates tanaru sp. nov. Dantas, Ferrão & Lima
  
Etymology: The specific epithet tanaru is a noun in apposition and honors the indigenous Tanaru, known in Portuguese as Índio Tanaru and Índio do Buraco (Indigenous Tanaru and Indigenous of the Hole, respectively). Tanaru died on 23 August 2022; he was the last representative individual of a poorly known ethnic group that lived in Rondônia, Brazil. His people were exterminated by gunmen at the behest of illegal loggers in 1995. After that, Tanaru lived isolated for almost 30 years in the Tanaru Indigenous Land, located in the southeast Rondônia, approximately 700 km from Rondônia's capital. Because the Tanaru Indigenous Land does not have a consolidated land demarcation and is surrounded by agricultural farms, the land suffers continuous threats and attacks, some of which started just some days after Tanaru's death. The indigenous Txai Suruí, from the Suruí ethnic group, said: “Known for his solitude, Tanaru resisted the contact with non-indigenous people until his last days after so much trauma and violence. His territory must continue to represent resistance and must be preserved and cared for, becoming a permanent conservation area.”

Diagnosis: A nurse frog Allobates characterized by the following combination of characters. Small-bodied species, SVL 14.1–17.0 mm (n = 18) in males and 16.9–18.2 mm (n = 9) in females; granular dorsal skin; one subarticular tubercle on finger IV; tip of finger IV reaches the distal phalanx of finger III; cream dorsum with contrasting brown marks; dorsolateral stripe present; conspicuous ventrolateral line absent; translucent-white vocal sac; white ventral surface in males; white chest and belly in females; and dorsal surface of fingers brown. Advertisement calls characterized by the emission of two notes in a single exhalation; with a call duration of 64 ± 4 ms (57–69 ms); first note (18 ± 2 ms; 16–22 ms) shorter than the second (27 ± 2 ms; 24–32 ms); an intercall interval of 275 ± 24 ms (220–309 ms); an intercall-series interval 854 ± 123 ms (645–1,118 ms); and a dominant frequency of 5,518 ± 200 Hz (5,168–5,879 Hz). Hatchlings with greenish yolk. Exotrophic tadpoles with an oral disc; labial keratodont row formula 2(2)/3(1); 13–15 pyramidal and cylindrical papillae on posterior labium; three pyramidal papillae at each end of the posterior labium; cylindrical papillae on the central portion of posterior labium; posterior labium length formulae P-I = P-II > P-III; and light-brown melanophores on tail and fins not forming blotches or spots.

[Herpetology • 2026] Mesalina bishnoi • A Novel Species of Mesalina Gray, 1838 (Sauria: Lacertidae) from Rajasthan, India

Abstract
We describe a new species of the genus Mesalina from Rajasthan, India. The new species is genetically distinct and belongs to the M. watsonana species complex, and differs from all other congeners in a combination of morphological characters, such as 10 upper labials; eight lower labials; two large transparent shields of lower eyelid accompanied with three smaller shields; scales on tibia keeled; ventral plates in eight straight longitudinal series, ventral plates in 30 transverse rows; 34 dorsal granular scales across middle of back; nine collars; five submaxillaries; 24 gulars; four supraoculars; 6-7 supraciliaries; one very large preanal shield surrounded above and at the sides by two rows of smaller scales; 14 femoral pores on each side of the thigh, narrowly separated by 2 scales; 21 lamellae under fourth toe.

Mesalina bishnoi sp. nov.

Etymology: The specific epithet bishnoi (noun in apposition) honours the Bishnoi community of Rajasthan, India, an indigenous socio-ecological group renowned for their long-standing traditions of biodiversity conservation and sustainable coexistence with wildlife. Bishnoi cultural tenets, grounded in a deep reverence for nature, have contributed to the protection of numerous desert species and ecosystems in the Thar Desert since the 15th century. By naming this species Mesalina bishnoi, we recognise and celebrate the enduring environmental stewardship of the Bishnoi people and their contribution to the preservation of arid-zone herpetofauna.

Abstract
Bucerocaputis Souza-Gonçalves & Lopes-Andrade, gen. nov.a new genus with two species, Bucerocaputis kapinawa Souza-Gonçalves & Lopes-Andrade, gen. et sp. nov. from the Caatinga biome and Bucerocaputis timbira Souza-Gonçalves & Lopes-Andrade, gen. et sp. nov. from the Cerrado biome, is described based on individuals collected in the states of Bahia, Maranhão, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte, Northeast Region of Brazil. The genus shares some morphological affinities with members of Acanthocis Miyatake, 1954, Falsocis Pic, 1916, Plesiocis Casey, 1898, Porculus Lawrence, 1987 and Pseudeuxestocis Lawrence 2016; however, it can be distinguished mainly by the combination of the following features: the robust body; single pronotal and elytral punctation; antennae with 10 antennomeres; apical maxillary palpomere inflated with a large circular sensory area at the apex; prosternum biconcave with a relatively broad, strongly curved prosternal process, projecting below the plane of the prosternum disc; and male anterocephalic and anterior pronotal edge quadridentate. We also provide information on its host fungi and briefly discuss its geographical distribution.

[Botany • 2026] Hechtia mixtecana (Bromeliaceae: Hechtioideae) • A New Species from Oaxaca, Mexico

Abstract
Botanical explorations carried out in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, led to the discovery of a new Bromeliaceae: Hechtia mixtecana,which is here described and illustrated. The new taxon is compared with the morphologically similar Hechtia fragilis, Hechtia lyman-smithii, and Hechtia minuta. Hechtia mixtecana differs from these taxa by the orientation of the leaves (ascending to divaricate), by the architecture of the staminate (twice branched) and pistillate inflorescences (once to twice branched), and by the length of the primary branches of the pistillate inflorescence (15–28 cm). A complete morphological description, images, and a geographic distribution map of the new species are included, as well as a list of examined specimens.

Diagnosis: Hechtia mixtecana is similar to H. fragilis but differs in the inflorescence of the staminate plants (twice branched versus once branched), in the presence of indument on its peduncle and floral bracts (glabrous versus lepidote), in the shape (elliptic versus broadly ovate to oblong) of the petals of the staminate flowers; in the length of the primary branches of the pistillate plants (15–28 versus 1–6 cm), and in the presence of indument on its floral bracts (glabrous versus lepidote).

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to and honours the Mixtec culture from Mexico. One of the regions occupied by the Mixtec ethnic group is located in northwestern Oaxaca, the area in which the type locality of the new species is found.

[Herpetology • 2025] Scutiger ching, S. lisu & S. pardalotus • Three New Species of the Genus Scutiger (Anura: Megophryidae) from the Gaoligong Mountain Range in China, with An Updated Key to the Chinese Congeners

Abstract  
Lazy Toads of the genus Scutiger are a diverse group of alpine specialists in Asia. Despite continuous research on the taxonomy of the genus, the diversity is still underestimated. Integrating both molecular and morphometric analyses, we describe three new species of the genus Scutiger from the Gaoligong Mountain Range in Yunnan Province, China. Morphologically, these three species resemble S. gongshanensis, S. mammatus, and S. boulengeri, respetively, but they can be diagnosed from these recognized species and all other congeners by a suit of morphological characters, including the toe webbing status, numbers of pectoral glands and axillary glands with nuptial spines in breeding males, and the number of fingers covered with nuptial spines in breeding males. Additionally, they show considerable genetic divergences with respect to their morphologically similar species. We discussed the still underestimated diversity in Southwest China, the existing taxonomic problems of the genus, particularly regarding the validity and the whereabouts of type specimens of S. bangdaensis, S. biluoensis, and S. meiliensis, and we provide an updated key to all recognized species of China.

Scutiger lisu sp. nov. Wang, Yu, and Che 

Etymology: The species name “lisu” is derived from the Chinese word 傈僳, which is the name of the main ethnic group across the range of the new species. We name the new species after the local ethnic group to honor theharmony between the local ethnic culture and nature ecosystem. The proposed Chinese name of the new species is傈僳齿突蟾 (pinyin: Li Su Chi Tu Chan), and the proposed english name is Lisu Lazy Toad.

Etymology: The species name “pardalotus” is derived from greek, which means “spotted like a leopard”. Itdescribes the beautiful spotted coloration patterns on the dorsum of the species. The proposed Chinese commonname of the new species is “豹斑齿突蟾” (pinyin: bao ban Chi Tu Chan), and the proposed english name isLeopard Lazy Toad.

Etymology: The species name, ching, is derived from the language Trung, the language of the local ethnic minority group (Dulong) at the type locality of the new species. It means small and slender, which describes thediagnostic body shape of the new species. We chose the native language of the Dulong People to honor the harmonybetween the local ethnic culture and nature ecosystem. We suggest elf Lazy Toad as its english common name, and“山精齿突蟾” (Pinyin: Shan Jing Chi Tu Chan) as its Chinese common name.

[Ichthyology • 2026] Sternopygus embera • Towards Deconstruction of the Sternopygus macrurus species complex (Gymnotiformes: Sternopygidae): Description of A New Species from the Pacific Coast of Colombia

Abstract
A new species of longtail electric knifefish, Sternopygus embera sp. nov., is described from the trans-Andean Río Baudó and Río San Juan basins of the Pacific coast of northwestern Colombia. The new species is diagnosed from all congeners by a unique combination of characters, including the complete lack of a humeral spot, morphology of the Weberian apparatus, lack of pigment bars or saddles, possession of endopterygoid teeth, vertically-oriented ascending endopterygoid process, a short snout, convex dorsal margin of neurocranium in adults, and 22–23 precaudal vertebrae. Despite sharing more external morphological similarities with species of the S. macrurus complex, the new species is phylogenetically nested within the larger-bodied and longer-snouted trans-Andean S. aequilabiatus species group, based on phylogenetic analysis of the mitochondrial barcode gene. Alternative hypotheses for these contrasting results, including mitochondrial introgression, incomplete lineage sorting, and paedomorphosis, are discussed. The description of this species is a step towards deconstructing the S. macrurus complex ahead of a future systematic revision.

Etymology. The specific epithet honors the Emberá, an Indigenous people native to the Chocó region of westernColombia, where the new species occurs. The name acknowledges the deep connection of the Emberá people withthe region’s rivers and ecosystems. A noun in apposition.

[Entomology • 2022] Metapocyrtus baulorum & M. malindangensis • Two New Species of the Genus Metapocyrtus Heller 1912 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Entiminae) from Northern Mindanao Philippines

Abstract
 Two new species of the genus Metapocyrtus Heller 1912, subgenus Dolichocephalocyrtus Schultze 1925 (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Entiminae, Pachyrhynchini) from Northern Mindanao, Philippines are described and illustrated. The novel species are Metapocyrtus (Dolichocephalocyrtusmalindangensis sp. nov. and Metapocyrtus (Dolichocephalocyrtusbaulorum sp. nov. from Mt. Malindang, Misamis Occidental and Gingoog, Misamis Oriental, Northern Mindanao. Photographs of habitus and male genitalia are presented with a brief ecologic note of their habitats.

ABSTRACT
Clerodendrum kelli R.Bustam., A.B.Tobias & Ples—a new species of the genus Clerodendrum L. (Lamiaceae) from the montane forests of Carranglan, Nueva Ecija, Luzon Island, Philippines—is described and illustrated. The species shares morphological features that are uncommon for the genus with both Clerodendrum quadriloculare (Blanco) Merr. (purple abaxial leaf surfaces) and C. mindorense Merr. (reduced fruiting calyx lobes), but differs from both in having lax (vs dense/compact) inflorescences bearing flowers with shorter corolla tubes and reddish-pink (vs green or purple) calyces with ovate (vs triangular or lanceolate) lobes. Additionally, a lectotype for C. mindorense is assigned. Preliminary assessment of its conservation status following IUCN guidelines places Clerodendrum kelli in the category of Critically Endangered (CR B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)).

 This species shares characters that are uncommon for the genus with both Clerodendrum quadriloculare (Blanco) Merr. (purple abaxial leaf surfaces) and Clerodendrum mindorense Merr. (reduced fruiting calyx lobes). However, it differs from both in having lax (vs dense/compact) inflorescences bearing flowers with shorter (1.2–1.5 vs 2–3 and 4.5–11 cm long) corollas and reddish-pink (vs green or purple) calyces with ovate (vs triangular or lanceolate) lobes.

Etymology and uses. The specific epithet kelli is the Bugkalot name for this species. The Bugkalot recognise Clerodendrum kelli as a species that occurs in the colder areas of the mountain; they traditionally mix extracts from the mashed leaves of this plant with food preparations for sick dogs to restore their health (Udasco, pers. comm.).

 Abstract
Channa bhoi, a new species of snakehead fish, is described from the Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya, India. It belongs to the Gachua group and differs from all its related congeners in having a combination of the following characters: a unique color pattern consisting of a bluish-gray body with lateral scale rows possessing a single, minute black spot on each scale, visibly arranged as 8–9 horizontal rows of broken lines, more transverse scale rows from post-drop to anal fin, more pored lateral-line scales, and a grayish-yellow pectoral fin with 6–8 thin, ochre-yellow to cream bands appearing in a wavy pattern. It differs from all its related congeners by a genetic distance of 3.3–20.4% in the cox1 gene.

 Abstract  
A new pseudoscorpion species, Pseudotyrannochthonius rucapillan sp. nov., from a lava tube cave in Chile, is described. This species exhibits distinct characteristics that differ from other congeneric species, including variations in chelal and cheliceral dentition and measurements. In addition, we provide ecological remarks on the new species, possible threats, and a key to Pseudotyrannochthonius species in Chile.

Etymology: Named after the type location Villarrica Volcano, referred to as Rucapillán in the Mapuche local language. The name should be treated as a noun in apposition.
