[Botany • 2026] Passiflora albopurpurea (Passifloraceae) • A New Species of Passiflora Subg. Passiflora discovered in the central montane forest of Peru

 Abstract
A new species of Passiflora sect. Granadillastrum belonging to P. subg. Passiflora discovered in the montane forests of Peru is described and illustrated. This new taxon, Passiflora albopurpurea, differs from P. crassifolia by having entire 3–5-nerved leaves, corona in 6 or 7 series, sepals, petals and inner row of corona white and a glabrous ovary. A taxonomic discussion and a distribution map are provided, along with keys for the identification of morphologically related species occurring in Peru. This new species is rare, due to its restricted occurrence with a small population size and should be considered under category Endangered (EN).

[Botany • 2024] Passiflora natalensis (Passifloraceae) • A New Species from the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil

Abstract
A new species of Passifloraceae sensu stricto, Passiflora natalensis, from the Atlantic Forest of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, is described. It differs from P. cincinnata mainly by these five characteristics: i) the presence of two to three smooth and lustrous glands in the base of the petiole; ii) always 5-lobed leaves, with the presence of one or two pairs of horizontal slits in the leaf blade’s central lobe; iii) none, one or two pairs of horizontal slits in adjacent lobe, iv) absence of the operculum, a rare characteristic in Passiflora species and, v) a sparsely pubescent ovary. Commentaries concerning its morphological traits and similar species, geographic distribution, ecology, preliminary conservation status, and photos are provided.

Passiflora natalensis G.L.Silva & Mezzonato, sp. nov. 

Type: BRAZIL. Rio Grande do Norte: Natal, Ponta Negra, Rota do Sol, outside Barreira do Inferno, stuck in cashew tree branches, 48 m, 5º53’45.1” S, 35º10’38.9” W, 20 June 2023, fl, fr, G.L. Silva 313 (holotype: RN! [RN00007336]; isotypes: CESJ!, RB!).
 
 The new species differs from P. cincinnata by the presence of two to three smooth glands (vs. two, crateriform); leaf blades always 5-lobed from young stages to maturity in the same plant (vs. (3)-5-lobed), always having a pair or two of horizontal slits in the central lobe (vs. absent). It also differs by the sometimes present pair or two of horizontal slits in the adjacent lobe (vs. absent); eight filament series of the corona (vs. 13-17), two outer series (vs. four), six inner series (vs. 9-13), the sparsely pubescent ovary (vs. glabrous) and the absence of the operculum (vs. filamentous operculum) (Table 1).

Etymology ‒ The specific epithet honors the city of Natal and the “Parque Estadual Dunas de Natal” Natal Dunes State Park, where this new species was seen for the first time. The park is the state’s first Conservation Unit, created in 1977 and recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as part of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve IDEMA, 2021).

[Botany • 2024] Passiflora pitalensis (Passifloraceae) • A New Species of Passiflora Subgenus Passiflora in the Flora of Colombia discovered in uncharted Andean territory

Abstract
A new species of Passiflora belonging to the subgenus Passiflora (supersection Stipulata, section Kermesinae) is described and illustrated from living material and herbarium specimens. Passiflora pitalensis is similar to P. lehmannii, and it can be recognized primarily by its petiole green, leaves with broader lobes, peduncle green, bract lanceolate, corona filaments in 5 series with outer filaments in 2 series, fruit ovoid, and seed margin dentate. This species is rare and endemic to Colombia in the Andean region at elevations ranging from 1,749–2,027 m and should be considered Endangered (EN) due to its restricted occurrence with a small population size of no more than 90 individuals.

Etymology:—The specific epithet is in honor of the municipality El Pital where the new species was observed for the first time. El Pital is located in the southwest of the department of Huila, on the upper valley plain of the Magdalena River in the foothills of the central mountain range of Colombia (Cordillera Central) in the region known as Macizo Colombiano.

[Botany • 2025] Passiflora quimiana (Passifloraceae) • A New Species of Passiflora Subgenus Decaloba from the Cordillera del Cóndor: Ecuador's far-flung frontier

Abstract
A new species of Passiflora subgenus Decaloba, supersect. Decaloba, from the Cordillera del Cóndor in Ecuador, is described and illustrated, with its morphological similarities to other species being discussed in this paper. Passiflora quimiana exhibits the unique combination of narrow ovate to long-oval leaves and small foliaceous bracts. Morphologically it is the most similar to Passiflora quadriflora from Peru, from which it differs by the size of the floral organs, the foliaceous bracts, the structure of the corona, with the inner series slightly swollen at the apices, and the raised limen. It is currently known from a single locality only, occurring as a vine in submontane vegetation of sandstone plateaus.

Passiflora quimiana Kuethe & H.Garzón sp. nov.  

Diagnosis: A species similar to Passiflora quadriflora, but differing in the larger flower (>4 cm versus <4 cm), the foliaceous bracts (opposed to setaceous), the vegetative pubescence on both stems and leaves (versus glabrous throughout), the slightly laterally compressed outer corona series (versus filiform), and the capitate structure of the inner corona (versus capillary).

 Etymology: The species is named after the Reserva Biológica El Quimi, one of the biological reserves within the Cordillera del Cóndor and the location of its discovery.

[Botany • 2021] Passiflora jorgeana (Passifloraceae) • A New Species of Passiflora Section Astrophea from Bahia, Brazil

Abstract
This work describes a new species of Passiflora L. from the extreme west of the state of Bahia, Brazil. The new species, P. jorgeana Mezzonato, is placed in Passiflora subg. Astrophea (DC.) Mast. and is illustrated and compared to four morphologically similar species. Morphological features, geographic distribution, and conservation status are discussed.

[Botany • 2024] Piriqueta velutina (Turneraceae: Passifloraceae s.l.) • A New endangered Species from the Brazilian Cerrado

Summary
Piriqueta velutina is described as a new species, illustrated, geographically mapped and its diagnostic characteristics and taxonomic affinities are described. The new species can be recognised mainly by the presence of serial branches (branches from serial buds predominantly in the apical portion of the plant), the short internodes and oblique or erect leaves which partially overlap in dried specimens; the ovate to elliptic leaf blade with a golden brown velutinous indumentum, and the conical or bulbous bases of the glandular setiform trichomes, frequently darkened on young leaf margins and on the abaxial surface. Its conservation status is preliminarily assessed as Endangered, it occurs in Brazilian Cerrado (savanna vegetation), in the Jalapão region, state of Tocantins, North region of Brazil.

Abstract 
Turnera macrosperma, a new species from the Brazilian Cerrado, is described and illustrated. The new species belongs to the series Turnera and can be characterized by the white petals with dark blue/violet basal spot and large seeds with papillose aril. SEM images, distribution map, and comments on taxonomy and morphology are presented.

[Botany • 2023] Passiflora acreana (Passifloraceae) • A New Species of Passiflora Section Granadillastrum from Acre, Brazil

Abstract
The new species described here was collected during expeditions carried out in the Lago do Amapá Environmental Protection Area, located in Acre State, Brazil. Morphological analysis and comparisons with close species confirmed that the collected specimens are a new species for science. Passiflora acreana was placed in P. subg. Passiflora, sect. Granadillastrum Triana & Planch., and can be distinguished by the presence of foliaceous, reniform, awned stipules, 4–8 pedunculate petiolar glands, with apex concave, and corona with 10 series of filaments. Descriptions, illustrations, distribution map, and conservation status are presented.

Abstract
Passiflora calicicalyx T. Boza & J. M. MacDougal, a new species of Passiflora L. known only from near Cochabamba, Bolivia, is described and illustrated from photographs and dry material. The new species is similar to P. tatei Killip & Rusby but differs by being glabrescent, with glabrous ovary, and entire bracts only toward the base of the peduncle. It is placed in Passiflora subg. Decaloba (DC.) Rchb. sect. Decaloba DC.

Passiflora calicicalyx T. Boza & J. M. MacDougal a ceteris speciebus ad Passifloram L. subg. Decalobam (DC.) Rchb. sect. Decalobam DC. pertinentibus foliorum lobis lateralibus inter se angulum 23°–30° formantibus, corona alba vittis purpureis ornata atque androgynophoro 9–10.5 mm longo distinguitur; praecipue a specie simili P. tatei Killip & Rusby planta glabrescente, ovario glabro atque bracteis floralibus ad partem inferiorem pedunculi portatis distinguitur.  

Etymology. The species is named for its conspicuously and rather narrowly abaxially indented cup-shaped floral tube (hypanthium/floral cup/calyx tube; see Tillett, 1988), leading to a conspicuously expanded base of the androgynophore and a hidden attachment of the floral stipe (pedicel) into the flower. Literally, a chalice-shaped calyx, a play on words.

Abstract
Passiflora ketura, a new species of Passiflora (Passifloraceae) endemic to the mountain forests in Amazonas Department, Northern Peru, is described and illustrated from herbarium material. It is compared to similar species and placed in subgenus Decaloba section Decaloba.

Passiflora ketura S.S. Tillett & J.M. MacDougal, sp. nov. 

Passiflora ketura is a small vine with bilobed leaves. It belongs to P. subgenus Decaloba supersection Decaloba based on the plicate operculum, transversely grooved seeds, variegated leaves, and to section Decaloba based on the presence of laminar extrafloral nectaries in rows between the main veins and by the verrucose or rugulose ridges on the seeds. It differs from the similar P. indecora by its narrow bracts (0.3–0.7 vs. 2–8 mm wide), and from the similar P. santos-llatasii by its smaller flowers (sepals 11–14 vs. 18–20 mm long) and smaller fruits (ca. 10 mm vs. ca. 40 mm long).

 Etymology. The name is derived from the Greek ketos, whale, and ura, tail, referring to the distinctive bilobed shape of the leaf that resembles the tail fluke of a cetacean.

[Botany • 2019] Passiflora menghaiensis (Passifloraceae) • A New Species from Yunnan, China

Abstract
Passiflora menghaiensis (Passifloraceae), a new species from Menghai, Yunnan, China, is described and illustrated. The species is placed in Passiflora subgenus Decaloba, supersection Disemma, section Octandranthus. It is compared with two morphologically similar species in section Octandranthus, P. kwangtungensis and P. geminiflora. Passiflora menghaiensis differs from the preceeding species by the combination of two flowers per inflorescence, the outer series of coronal filaments white, the inner series of coronal filaments light green, and puberulous fruit. A complete morphological description of P. menghaiensis is provided, together with line drawings, photographs, a conservation assessment, and a diagnostic key to fourteen species of Passiflora subgenus Decaloba supersection Disemma section Octandranthus from China.

Passiflora menghaiensis X. D. Ma, L. C. Yan & J. Y. Shen, sp. nov

Diagnosis: P. menghaiensis can be distinguished from P. kwangtungensis, and P. geminiflora by several morphological features. Passiflora menghaiensis has two flowers per inflorescence, the outer series of coronal filaments are white, the inner series of coronal filaments are light green, and the fruit is puberulous.

Etymology: The specific epithet is derived from the type locality, Menghai County, Xishuangbanna Prefecture, Yunnan, China.

[Botany • 2018] Passiflora kumandayi • A New Species (Passifloraceae) from the Colombian Andes in A New Section within Subgenus Decaloba

Abstract
A new species of passion flower from the Cordillera Central of the Colombian Andes is here described; Passiflora kumandayi M.A. Buitrago A. & Coca (subgenus Decaloba, supersection Auriculata). This species, along with five other closely related Andean species, comprise a monophyletic group characterized by paired branched inflorescences and small flowers with short or absent androgynophores. A provisional key to the species in the newly described section Apodae is presented. Passiflora kumandayi is here illustrated and its affinities with related species are discussed based on morphology and phylogenetic binning analysis using molecular site weight calibration.

[Botany • 2017] Delimitation of the Series Laurifoliae in the Genus Passiflora (Passifloraceae)

Abstract

Within the huge diversity of genus Passiflora, series Laurifoliae constitutes a strikingly uniform group, widely distributed in neotropical rain forests, at low to moderate elevations. Given its morphological and ecological unity, Killip mentionned it as an «exceedingly difficult» group. The lack of clear morphological criteria has not helped in delimiting it, and the confusion has grown with the addition of new species and criteria. As a preliminary step in the study of diversity within series Laurifoliae, we re-examine its morphological delimitation, assessing how its current 29 species (including the highly similar P. pachyantha and P. killipiana) conform to 20 criteria from different authors. Three criteria (indumentum on vegetative parts, stipule glands, membranous limen) appear to be irrelevant, because they are either too variable or rarely recorded in the species descriptions. Using the 17 remaining ones, 24 typical species show very limited variations, five of them differing by only one criterion. Among them, we retain terete to angular stem, setaceous or linear stipules soon deciduous, petiolar glands in one pair, leaves oblong, neither peltate nor lobate, three glandular bract over 1 cm long and free, flowers pendent, with two campanulate outer series of filaments (most other series much reduced or aborted). Five species, P. guazumaefolia, P. kikiana, P. odontophylla, P. ischnoclada, and P. maliformis, differ by three to nine traits, not found in the typical representatives of the series, so they can be excluded from it. Passiflora kikiana should be classified into series Kermesinae. For the four other ones, a satisfactory solution implies a more global study, involving other series.

Conclusion: 
Several diagnostic characters used by Killip and Cervi (indumenta on vegetative organs, glandular stipules, bracts rounded at apex (with reservation), limen presence and shape), appear to be variable in the series, so they can still be used to differentiate species of the series, not to delimit the series. As a variable quantitative trait, leaf width is also questionable. The criteria “campanulate calyx tube” and “tubular or filamented operculum” are characters shared by all species of supersection Laurifolia. We can also exclude them from the definition of series Laurifoliae. These modifications allow restoring a homogeneous series Laurifoliae, which could be defined as follows:

 Series Laurifoliae — Plants glabrous to pubescent. Stems terete to angular, wingless, sometimes corky on old parts. Stipules linear to setaceous, early deciduous. Petiole with two discoid to oblong sessile glands (except in populations of P. popenovii). Leaves unlobate, oblong-lanceolate, entire to glandular-serrulate, not peltate. Bracts three, in involucre, free at base, more than 1 cm long and glandular. Flowers pendent. Outer series of filaments two, campanulate (most other series much reduced or aborted).

 Currently, series Laurifoliae includes 24 species corresponding to the above criteria: P. acuminata, P. ambigua, P. capparidifolia, P. cerasina, P. chaparensis, P. crenata, P. fernandezii, P. fissurosa, P. gabrielliana, P. gleasonii, P. kapiriensis, P. killipiana, P. laurifolia, P. metae (when type effectively deposited), P. nigradenia, P. nitida, P. pachyantha, P. pergrandis, P. phellos, P. popenovii, P. riparia, P. rufostipulata, P. tolimana, and P. venusta.
