[Botany • 2026] Pseuduvaria sirindhorniana (Annonaceae) • Phylogenetic and Morphological Evidence supports the Recognition of A New Species from southern Thailand

Abstract
Based on the molecular phylogenetic analyses of six plastid DNA regions (matK and rbcL exons; trnL intron; atpB-rbcL, psbA-trnH and trnL-trnF intergenic spacers) and including 57 samples of Pseuduvaria, as well as thorough morphological studies, Pseuduvaria sirindhorniana (Annonaceae, Miliuseae) is described and illustrated here as a new species from Narathiwat, southern Thailand. The new species belongs to a major clade that also includes P. fragrans, P. gardneri, P. glossopetala, P. kwangtungensis, P. multiovulata and P. phuyensis. Pseuduvaria sirindhorniana is morphologically most similar to P. glossopetala, but differs by having basally connate (vs. free) sepals, larger petals, elliptic-ovate (vs. obovate) outer petals, inner petals that are only connivent at the apex (vs. connivent from the base to ± the midpoint and at the apex), with openings formed from the base (vs. openings formed from ± the midpoint). Pseuduvaria kwangtungensis turns out to be a putative sister of the new species, but the two are morphologically dissimilar in several traits, such as leaf base, inner petal appearance and glands on the inner side of the inner petals.

Pseuduvaria sirindhorniana Yoosukkee, Damth. & Chaowasku sp. nov. 

 Pseuduvaria sirindhorniana differs from the morphologically most similar species, P. glossopetala, by having basally connate (vs. free) sepals, larger petals, elliptic-ovate (vs. obovate) outer petals, inner petals that are only connivent at the apex (vs. connivent at the apex and from the base to ± the midpoint), with openings formed from the base (vs. openings formed from ± the midpoint). 

Etymology — The specific epithet honours H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, who has continuously supported the study of plant taxonomy in Thailand and worldwide, on the auspicious occasion of her 72nd (6th cycle) birthday anniversary (2 April 2027). She has also been instrumental in establishing the Plant Genetic Conservation Project under the Royal Initiative (RSPG), which aims to train personnel and develop plant genetic resources for the conservation of plant diversity, with benefits extending to farmers and related sectors of the country.

[Botany • 2026] Taeniophyllum wrightmyoensis (Orchidaceae) • A Review of the Genus Taeniophyllum in Andaman and Nicobar Islands (India) with the Description of A New Species


Taeniophyllum wrightmyoensis Alappatt,

Abstract  
A new species, Taeniophyllum wrightmyoensis (Orchidaceae) is described from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. The new species resembles T. hasseltii and T. pusillum, but is distinct from both in having mostly terete free hanging roots (versus roots flat, appressed to the substratum), bracts lax (versus bracts close in T. pusillum), lip without any cushions (versus lip with convex cushions in T. hasseltii) and a conical spur (versus globose spur in T. pusillum). In addition, a review of other species of the genus Taeniophyllum reported from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is provided with an identification key.

Taeniophyllum wrightmyoensis Alappatt, sp. nov.

This species is similar to Taeniophyllum hasseltii Rchb.f. and T. pusillum (Willd.) Seidenf. & Ormerod in having free sepals and petals, distichous bracts, fleshy lip and short anther-beak, but differs from them by its mostly free hanging terete roots and a few roots semi-terete when appressed to substratum (vs. roots flat, appressed to the substratum), bracts lax (vs. close in T. pusillum), comparatively smaller flowers (c. 3 mm across), not opening widely (vs. large flowers, 5–5.5 mm across, opening widely), lip blade without convex cushions (vs. with convex cushions in T. hasseltii), spur conical, being longer than broad (vs. globose, as long as broad in T. pusillum). 

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the collections from Wrightmyo where the species was discovered.

[Botany • 2026] Myrica tristigma (Myricaceae) • A New Species from Vietnam

Myrica tristigma (Myricaceae), a new species found only in Vietnam, is described here. A morphological comparison with resembling species and a key to the Myrica species in Vietnam are provided. Details about the distribution and habitat are supplemented with photographic illustrations.

Myrica tristigma N.T.Cuong, T.D.Binh & D.V.Hai, sp. nov.  

Shrubs, monoecious, 1–2,5 m tall. Ovary glabrous, stigma sessile, divided into 3 branches. Drupe usually 1 per infructescence, globose, 0.8–1 cm diam.

Etymology. The species epithet is based on the character of the stigma divided into three relatively long branches.

[Botany • 2026] Costus maasiorum (Costaceae) • A New Species from western Ecuador


Costus maasiorum D.Skinner, J.L.Clark, & C.D.Specht, 

in Skinner, Valderrama, Clark, Landis, Harden et Specht, C.D. 2026. 

 Abstract 
We here describe Costus maasiorum, a new species from western Ecuador. This new species shares morphological similarities with Costus macrostrobilus, but differs in having plicate leaves, erect and triangular bract appendages, and semi-tubular elongate flowers. A phylogeny based on 5.9+ million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) strongly supports a sister relationship between C. maasiorum and C. macrostrobilus. Additional taxonomic sampling in subsequent analyses indicates a close relationship with C. gibbosus and C. antioquiensis. A comprehensive taxonomic description, including detailed photographs and information about the habitat and ecology of the new species are provided. A preliminary conservation status is recommended as Least Concern (LC).

Costus maasiorum D.Skinner, J.L.Clark, & C.D.Specht, sp. nov.

 Costus maasiorum sp. nov. can be recognized by its plicate leaves, often dark purple underneath, the presence of appendaged bracts with the appendages being erect and triangular in shape, and the primarily yellow flower with the labellum presenting as a narrow, elongate floral tube. The overall morphology of the plant is similar to that of Costus macrostrobilus, but the species differs in having a more tubular labellum, plicate leaves (non-plicate or flat leaves in C. macrostrobilus) and in the shape of the bract appendages that are concave and somewhat pungent (ending in a stiff, sharp point in C. macrostrobilus). 

Etymology — Costus maasiorum is named in honour of the botanical couple Professor Paul J.M. Maas and Hiltje Maas-van de Kamer and the contribution of this couple to systematic and taxonomic work within the Costaceae. It was Dr. Paul Maas who visited Bilsa in 1997 and first noted this species as undescribed. Paul began working on Costaceae during his PhD in which he completed two monographs on New World Costoideae for Flora Neotropica, establishing himself as the expert on this and other families of Neotropical Zingiberales. The two Flora Neotropica volumes, which included revisions of the Costoideae, provided species level descriptions and detailed understanding of taxonomic limits, biogeographic distributions, morphological variation, and relationships among species of Costaceae that still stand today, often being confirmed by subsequent DNA-based phylogenetic studies. Paul’s observations of differences between closely related species and awareness of variation noted in living plants and in herbarium specimens enabled and inspired decades of research on this interesting and charismatic tropical family. ...

[Botany • 2025] Phreatia tinukariensis (Orchidaceae: Thelasiinae) • A New Species from Sulawesi, Indonesia

Abstract 
A new species of Phreatia sect. Caulescentes from Sulawesi, Indonesia, Phreatia tinukariensis is described and illustrated. It closely resembles P. navicularis, described from Maluku (Seram, Indonesia), but differs in the shape of the labellum, in particular its basal part and the position of the circular thickenings on the labellum blade. A comparison between the two is presented in a table. A key to the Indonesian species of sect. Caulescentes is provided.

Phreatia tinukariensis Juswara & Wibowo, sp. nov. 

 Most similar to Phreatia navicularis J.J.Sm. but differs in the flowers having the labellum with obtuse, weakly retrorse basal lobules (vs basal lobules subacute, patently to obliquely truncate), and two circular glands on the base of the junction of the labellum blade with the claw (vs on the claw). A detailed comparison is presented in Table 1.

Etymology. The species epithet is based on the village of Tinukari, which is the nearest inhabited settlement to the type locality.

Abstract 
We present a taxonomic revision of the genus Disporum in Thailand based on Thai specimens including descriptions of the genus and species, a key to the species, illustrations and lectotypifications. The dorsifixed anther attachment is a new character for the genus. There is a total of six species in Thailand, including the four new species described here, namely D. chiangdaoenseD. dorsifixerumD. phuhinrongklaensis and D. scabridum, and two well-known species D. calcaratum and D. cantoniense. Anatomical and pollen morphological characters can be used for species diagnoses and they strongly support the morphological recognition of the four new species. New lectotypifications of synonyms are provided for D. wallichii, Uvularia calcarata and U. hamiltoniana.

Distribution — India, China, Tibet, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam Thailand (Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Phayao, Nan, Lamphun, Loei), Malaysia, Indonesia. 
Habitat & Ecology — In open areas or along roadsides of mixed deciduous or evergreen forests (pine forest) at 800– 1600 m elevation. Flowering: June to August; fruiting: July to December.

Disporum chiangdaoense Sarapan & Suwanph., sp. nov. 

Disporum chiangdaoense differs from D. calcaratum in its perianth that is white and green or cream at apex (vs pink and purple in D. calcaratum) and the ridge of the spur is glabrous (vs papillose in D. calcaratum). 

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to Chiangdao Wildlife Sanctuary, Chiang Mai Province, where the type specimens were collected.

 Distribution — Endemic to Thailand (Provinces: Mae Hong Son (Mueang District); Chiang Mai (Chiangdao Wildlife Sanctuary)). 
 Habitat & Ecology — In open areas or along roadsides of evergreen forest at 1200–2000 m elevation. Flowering: June to July; fruiting: August to February.

Disporum dorsifixerum Sarapan & Suwanph., sp. nov. 

 Disporum dorsifixerum has dorsifixed anthers; it differs from D. calcaratum in its flowers which are rotate (vs campanulate in D. calcaratum); the ridge of the spur that lacks papillae (vs papillose in D. calcaratum), and the tepals that are apically green (vs pale pink in D. calcaratum). 

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the dorsifixed anther attachment that is a unique distinguishing character for this species

Distribution — Endemic to Thailand (Lamphun: Doi Khun Tan National Park; Tak: Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary). 
 Habitat & Ecology — In open areas and along roadsides of mixed deciduous and evergreen forests at 1300–1800 m elevation. Flowering: July to August; fruiting: July to December.

Disporum phuhinrongklaensis Sarapan & Chamch., sp. nov.

Disporum phuhinrongklaensis differs from D. calcaratum in its flowers that are rotate and white and green at the apex (vs campanulate and pink or dark purplish red in D. calcaratum); the ridge of the spur is glabrous (vs papillose in D. calcaratum); the filaments and style are white (vs pink or purple in D. calcaratum). 

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park, Phitsanulok province, where the type specimens were collected.

Distribution — Endemic in Thailand (Chiang Mai: Si Lanna National Park, Phitsanulok: Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park). 
 Habitat & Ecology — In open areas or along roadsides of mixed deciduous and evergreen forests at 800–1200 m elevation. Flowering: May to June; fruiting: July to December

Disporum scabridum Sarapan & Hodk., sp. nov. 

Disporum scabridum differs from D. calcaratum in its flowers that are tubulate to campanulate with a deep purple red apex (vs campanulate with pink or pale pink apex in D. calcaratum); the basal tepal and spur are densely scabrous (vs glabrous in D. calcaratum). 

 Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the densely scabrous spur that is characteristic of the species.

Distribution — Endemic to Thailand (Pitsanulok: Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park).
 Habitat & Ecology — In open areas and along roadsides of mix deciduous or evergreen forests at 1000–1800 m elevation. Flowering: June to July; fruiting: July to November.

พืชชนิดใหม่ของโลกในสกุลว่านหัวสืบ (𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑢𝑚) จำนวน 4 ชนิด ที่ค้นพบในครั้งนี้ ได้แก่
1. ว่านหัวสืบเชียงดาว 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘮  𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘥𝘢𝘰𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 Sarapan & Suwanph. พบบริเวณป่าดิบเขา เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าดอยเชียงดาว จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เป็นไม้ล้มลุก สูงได้ถึง 94 ซม. ลำต้นอวบน้ำ สีม่วงแดงเข้มตลอดต้น มีขนสั้นหนาแน่น ใบเดี่ยว เรียงเวียน เกลี้ยง หลอดกลีบดอกด้านนอกสีขาวครีม ด้านในแฉกกลีบดอกและหลอดกลีบดอกสีขาวครีม คำระบุชนิด ‘𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑑𝑎𝑜𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑒’ เป็นภาษาละตินที่หมายถึง เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าดอยเชียวดาวที่เป็นสถานที่เก็บตัวอย่าง

[Botany • 2024] Sophora phulangkaensis (Fabaceae: Sophoreae) • A New Species from Thailand based on morphological and molecular evidence

Abstract 
Sophora phulangkaensis is illustrated and newly described here. The species shows similarities with its congener, S. exigua, by having an obovate terminal leaflet and up to 15 leaflets but differs in the floral parts. A morphological comparison between the two species is provided along with a discussion. The phylogenetic placement of the new species is presented and discussed based on molecular evidence by nuclear (ITS) and chloroplast markers (matK). The results suggest that the new species is nested into sect. Rubriflorae, which includes S. exigua and S. huamotensis. The circumscription of sect. Rubriflorae is expanded after being redefined by our findings. In addition, the updated key to species of the genus Sophora for the Flora of Thailand is given based on recent specimen observations. Additionally, lectotypes for S. exigua, S. tonkinensis, and S. violacea var. pilosa are designated.

Sophora phulangkaensis Mattapha, K.Khamm. & Suddee, sp. nov. 

 Closely related to S. exigua Craib, from which it differs by being a small shrub 0.5–2 m tall (vs undershrub up to 0.5 m tall in S. exigua), with sparse to dense hairs on midrib and margins of leaf blade (vs densely tomentose in S. exigua, particularly when young), presence of bracteoles (absent in S. exigua), the standard 15–16 mm long (18–20 mm long in S. exigua), filaments hairy at base with hairy anthers (glabrous in S. exigua), ovary densely strigose (tomentose in S. exigua) and longer pods (7–13 cm long vs 5–7 cm long in S. exigua). 

 Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the name of Phu Langka National Park, where the species was discovered.

[Botany • 2023] Schoenorchis kembangleutik (Orchidaceae: Aeridinae) • A New Species from West Java, Indonesia

Abstract 
Schoenorchis kembangleutik Yudistira & Mustaqim described here as new to science is an orchid species currently considered endemic to West Java. It is similar to S. pachyachris (J.J.Sm.) J.J.Sm. from Sumatra and Java but differs in having flowers with midlobe of labellum orbicular (vs oblong) with horizontal and rounded (vs pointing upwards and tapering to a point) apex, the labellum side lobes white, uncinate and retrorse at the apex (vs yellow, straight and erect at apex), and in having shorter spurs with straight base (2 vs 4 mm long, with geniculate base). A morphological description, notes on distribution, habitat and ecology, an illustration, photographs and a key to the five species of Schoenorchis of Java are provided.

Abstract 
Amischotolype balslevii (Commelinaceae), a new species from Ban Dung, Udon Thani, northeastern Thailand is presented. The new species is distinguished from the resembling taxa, A. divaricata and A. gracilis, by its puberulent to glabrous stem nodes, glabrous leaf sheaths and pseudo-petioles, longer sepals, and ellipsoid and purplish white fruits. A morphological description and illustrations are provided, along with information on the species distribution, habitat, and conservation status.

 Nodes puberulent to glabrous; leaf sheaths, lower surface of pseudo-petioles, sepals and filaments glabrous; sepals 10–14 mm long; fruits ellipsoid, 16–18 mm long, purple-white.

Etymology. The name of this species honours Professor Henrik Balslev, Aarhus University, Denmark, who encouraged the authors to conduct research on the Commelinaceae for the Flora of Thailand Project.

          พืชชนิดนี้มีลักษณะเด่นเป็นพืชล้มลุกปีนป่าย ลำต้น กาบใบ และแผ่นใบมีผิวเกลี้ยง กลีบเลี้ยงมีสีม่วง ผลมีสีขาวแกมม่วง ยาวมากกว่ากลีบเลี้ยง สำหรับตัวอย่างต้นแบบแรกของพืชชนิดนี้เก็บจากพื้นที่ อ.บ้านดุง จ.อุดรธานี นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่าพืชชนิดนี้มีการกระจายพันธุ์ในอีกหลายจังหวัดของประเทศไทย ได้แก่ เลย บึงกาฬ นครพนม ชลบุรี และจันทบุรี รวมถึงในประเทศลาวอีกด้วย

Abstract
Gomphostemma phetchaburiense, a new species from Phetchaburi Province, Thailand, is described and illustrated. A key to the species of Gomphostemma in Thailand is provided and conservation status and the dimorphic leaf characters are discussed.
