[Botany • 2022] Aristolochia quiricoana (Aristolochiaceae) • A New Species from southern Costa Rica

Background and Aims: Aristolochia is the largest genus in Aristolochiaceae and is widely distributed in the world. A recent synopsis of Aristolochia in Costa Rica recognized 19 species; nevertheless, recent botanical exploration in southwestern Costa Rica has revealed yet another new species of this genus.

Methods: The new species resulted from fieldwork in Buenos Aires, Puntarenas Province. Specimens from several herbaria were examined, as well as the type material of the most morphologically similar species. Comments about its distribution, habitat, phenology, conservation status and morphological distinction from related species are provided.

Key results: Aristolochia quiricoana, a member of Aristolochia series Thyrsicae, is described and illustrated from the southern Pacific region of Costa Rica, where it is apparently endemic. It is similar to A. ornithorhyncha, from which it is distinguished by its shorter pedicels, wider, oblong perigone limbs with a shorter appendix, and a different floral color pattern.

Conclusions: The new taxon described here represents the 22nd species documented in Aristolochia series Thyrsicae, as well as the 20th species of the genus from Costa Rica.

Abstract
Aristolochia pulvinata Yi-Fan Wang & Zhi-Jian Yin, a new species of Aristolochia subgenus Siphisia (Aristolochiaceae) from Yunnan Province, southwest China, is described and illustrated. Aristolochia pulvinata is distinguished by its unique characters: an elevated and thickened pulvinate structure in the inferior calyx limbs of its perianth. Morphologically, it resembles A. ovatifolia, A. melanocephala, A. utriformis, and A. luudamcui due to the similar thickening on the calyx limb region, but it differs in terms of degree, surface texture, color, and angle, as well as leaf morphology. This species, discovered and known only from one region, is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) according to IUCN categories and criteria. This publication includes detailed morphological illustrations of A. pulvinata, with comparative photo plates and a table that highlights distinguishing features relative to similar species.

Aristolochia pulvinata Yi-Fan Wang & Zhi-Jian Yin, sp. nov.

Etymology:—The specific epithet "pulvinata" is derived from the distinctive pulvinate thickening on the inferiorlobe of the adaxial side of the calyx limb observed in its flowers. 
The subgenus Siphisia is commonly referred to as 关 木通 (guan mu tong) in Chinese, which differs from the genus name Aristolochia, typically known as 马兜铃 (ma douling). Therefore, the Chinese name is given as 垫状花关木通 (dian zhuang hua guan mu tong), reflecting this unique morphological trait.

[Botany • 2021] Aristolochia luudamcui (Aristolochiaceae) • A New Species from northern Vietnam

Abstract
Aristolochia luudamcui (Aristolochia subgen. Siphisia, Aristolochiaceae), a new species from Vietnam, previously misidentified as A. utriformis, is described and illustrated here. The new species is most similar to A. pseudoutriformis and A. utriformis concerning the morphology of the leaf lamina, the color of the perianth, and the shape of the limb, but A. luudamcui can be distinguished from the other two species by having a deeply 3-lobed limb and a glabrous, yellow inner surface of limb lobes. A detailed description, information on ecology, phenology, distribution, usage, a provisional assessment of the conservation status of the new species, and a comparison with morphologically similar species are provided as well.

Aristolochia luudamcui T.V.Do, sp. nov. 

Aristolochia luudamcui is most similar to A. pseudoutriformis and A. utriformis by sharing an ovate to lanceolate-ovate leaf blade, alight yellow perianth, and a saccate-shaped limb, but it clearly differs from these two species by having a deeply 3-lobed limb (vs.shallowly 3-lobed limb in both A. pseudoutriformis and A. utriformis) and a yellow, glabrous inner surface of limb lobes (vs. dark-red, dense processes in A. pseudoutriformis and black-purple, sparse processes in A. utriformis). 

Etymology:—The specific epithet honors Prof. Dr. Luu Dam Cu, a former vice-director of Vietnam NationalMuseum of Nature who strongly supported botanical research at the museum during the past years.

Abstract
A new species of Aristolochiaceae, Aristolochia geantha Z.R. Guo & Y.Fan Wang, from Southwest China, is described herein. Detailed scientific illustrations, color figures, and a key are provided. The species is morphologically proximate to A. petelotii, but can be readily distinguished by its flat, cupuliform calyx limb, which adaxially covered with golden or rusty villous hairs, a velvety pink upper tube, unusually elongated peduncle, which extends from the basal lignified stems, and distinctive stripe patterns radiating from the throat to the calyx limb margin. Comparative assessments with other congeners are provided to establish its unique taxonomic status within the genus.

Aristolochia geantha Z.R. Guo & Y.Fan Wang, sp. nov.  

Type: CHINA. Yunnan: Malipo County, Mali Township, ..., elevation 1338.5 m, ... 

Diagnosis: Aristolochia geantha is similar to A. petelotii O.C.Schmidt (1933: 95) and A. austroyunnanensis S.M. Hwang (1981: 228) in having ovate to lanceolate leaf blades with acuminate apices, cordate bases, and rusty villous hairs on both surfaces, as well as a perianth with a concave, fused calyx limb of similar coloration. However, A. geantha can be readily distinguished by its flat cupuliform calyx limb, radiating stripes from the throat to the limb margin, densely long rusty or golden villous hairs on the adaxial surface of the calyx limb, a pinkish beige to pink throat, and a pink upper tube. Notably, this species exhibits a unique floral positioning behavior, characterized by an elongated peduncle emerging from the basal stem, placing the flower prostrate on the ground with the throat facing upward—a trait not observed in any other species within subgenus Siphisia. See Figs. 1–2, S1–2 and Table 1 for detailed comparisons.

 Etymology: The epithet “geantha” conveys the species’ distinctive inflorescence arrangement, based on extensive field observations and cultivated living collections. The flowers are borne on an unusually elongated peduncle, which extends from the basal lignified stems and positions the flowers directly upon the ground, demonstrating a cauliflorous habit. This arrangement, where the flowers rest on the substrate, is not documented in any other taxa within the subg. Siphisia, and the epithet is intended to highlight this unique growth habit. 

Vernacular name: During our fieldwork, we learned that Aristolochia geantha, along with the sympatric species A. petelotii, has long been used as a folk medicine and is occasionally traded in markets under the vernacular name “xuě shàng cǎo” (雪上草), which translates to “growing above the snow.” However, this vernacular term lacks clarity in reflecting the biological properties or traits of the plants and functions as an umbrella name that may refer to multiple Aristolochia subg. Siphisia taxa, including A. petelotii. Based on the distinct characteristics of A. geantha, we propose the Chinese name “dì huā guān mù tōng” (地花关木通) to accurately reflect its growth habit and ensure alignment with its scientific identity.

[Botany • 2025] Aristolochia zhuhaiensis (Aristolochiaceae) • A self-supporting New Species from Guangdong, China

Abstract
A self-supporting new species of Aristolochiaceae, Aristolochia zhuhaiensis Y.Fan Wang & Z.R.Guo, is described and illustrated from Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, China. Morphologically, this species exhibits vegetative characters, including leaf blade shape and growth form, that are similar to Aristolochia thwaitesii Hook., the only other known taxon in Aristolochia subg. Siphisia in Asia that is non-twining and self-supporting, native to southern Guangdong, particularly the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. However, A. zhuhaiensis can be readily distinguished from A. thwaitesii by its unique floral morphology. The new species features a campanulate to funnel-shaped calyx limb densely covered with porcelain-white granular pustules. In contrast, A. thwaitesii has an elongated, concave tubular calyx limb with an adaxial surface that transitions from purple to pale yellow or white towards the apex, densely covered with recurved fleshy prickles. Aristolochia zhuhaiensis is endemic to Zhuhai City and has not been observed elsewhere. Detailed illustrations, photographic plates, a distribution map, a digitized holotype voucher specimen, a comparative table, and an identification key are provided to facilitate the differentiation of A. zhuhaiensis from A. thwaitesii.

Diagnosis. Aristolochia zhuhaiensis shares morphological similarities with A. thwaitesii, both of which are distributed in neighboring regions and represent the only two known self-supporting, non-twining Aristolochia subg. Siphisia species in Asia. In terms of vegetative characteristics, these two congeners are highly similar; however, they can be readily distinguished by their markedly different floral morphologies. Aristolochia zhuhaiensis is characterized by a campaniform-infundibuliform calyx limb densely covered with porcelain-white granular pustules. It also features a conspicuous platform-shaped area beneath the perianth throat, which is white, glabrous, waxy, and slightly elevated upward. In contrast, A. thwaitesii possesses an elongated, concave tubular calyx limb with an adaxial surface that transitions from purple to pale yellow or white towards the apex. This species is entirely covered with recurved fleshy prickles and lacks the distinctive platform structure found in the calyx of A. zhuhaiensis. Detailed morphological comparisons between the new species and A. thwaitesii are shown in Figs 4, 5 and Table 1.

[Botany • 2023] Rediscovery of Thottea philippinensis (Aristolochiaceae) from Naga-Kabasalan Protected Landscape, Zamboanga Sibugay including the Confirmation on the Occurrence of T. tomentosa in the Philippines

Abstract
Collecting expeditions carried out in the Zamboanga Peninsula of western Mindanao (Philippines) led to the rediscovery of Thottea philippinensis, previously known only by a single collection made 93 years ago. Here we provide an extended description, comments on the affinities among closely related species, an updated geographical distribution, habitat information, conservation assessment, and the first-ever published photos of living T. philippinensis in the wild. Additionally, the occurrence of T. tomentosa in the Philippine archipelago is confirmed.

[Botany • 2023] Aristolochia laotica (Aristolochiaceae, subgen. Siphisia) • A New Species from Northeastern Laos

Abstract
Aristolochia laotica, a new species from Northeastern Laos, is described and illustrated here. The horseshoe-shaped perianth tube, the 3-lobed limb, and the 3-lobed gynostemium support its placement into Aristolochia subgenus Siphisia. Of the species with cylindric or saccate-shaped limb, the new species resembles A. vuquangensis. However, it differs from the latter by having an oblanceolate to narrowly elliptic leaf lamina with a truncate to shallowly cordate base, pinnate veins, sparsely brown hirsute to glabrescent perianth, uniformly purple inner surface of utricle, indistinct, straight, strongly inflated limb lobes, and pubescent and warty inner surface of the limb lobes. Detailed description, color illustrations, and remarks on ecology, conservation status are also provided, along with a key to species reported in Laos and comparison with its similar species.

[Botany • 2022] Thottea beungongtanoeh (Aristolochiaceae) • A New Species from Aceh, northern Sumatra, Indonesia

Abstract
A species new to science, Thottea beungongtanoeh Mustaqim (Aristolochiaceae), is described based on a specimen collected from a lowland mixed dipterocarp forest in the eastern part of Aceh Province, the northernmost province in Sumatra. This species differs from all previously described species in having 33-lobed style, the highest count for the genus. Morphological description, distribution, phenology, comparison with the similar species, and the photographs of the living plants are provided.

Thottea beungongtanoeh Mustaqim, sp. nov. 

Diagnosis: Thottea beungongtanoeh can be recognized from other species in the genus by the 33- lobed style. It is similar to T. grandiflora Rottb., besides having more numerous style lobes (33 vs 20), this species differs in having inflorescence close to ground level (vs not from the ground level) and tubular perianth tube (vs campanulate).

Distribution and Ecology: Indonesia, endemic to northern Sumatra (Aceh Province), only known from the type locality (Fig. 2). Found in the lowland mixed dipterocarp forests on undulating terrain at the elevation around 60–80 m asl, on clay mixed with humus soils.

 Etymology: The specific epithet is derived from the Acehnese Language, beungong tanoeh, which means ‘flower of the ground’, indicating the position of the flowers.

[Botany • 2022] Aristolochia rethyae (Aristolochiaceae) • A New Species from Arunachal Pradesh, north-east India

Abstract
Aristolochia rethyae, a new species from Arunachal Pradesh, north-east India, is described. Aristolochia rethyae is affinis to A. griffithii and A. tanzawana with similar leaf texture and shallowly 3-lobed perianth limb, but differs from A. griffithii in its ovate to narrowly ovate leaf shape, cauliflorous flower borne in a cluster and densely hirsute brown capsule, and from A. tanzawana in their cauliflorous inflorescence, S-shaped perianth and capsule size with distinct wavy ridges.

Aristolochia rethyae S. Kashung, Rimi Barman et P. R. Gajurel, sp. nov. 

 Aristolochia rethyae is morphologically close to A. griffithii and A. tanzawana (Kigawa) Watan.-Toma & OhiToma (2014:160) in its leaf texture which is densely pubescent abaxially, and the perianth limb being shallowly 3- lobed. However, it can be distinguished very easily from A. griffithii in its ovate to narrowly ovate leaves, cauliflorous inflorescence, pubescent perianth and capsule texture. It is also distinctly different from A. tanzawana in its cauliflorous inflorescence, S-shaped perianth and much larger capsule with distinct wavy ridges.

Etymology:— The specific epithet honors Dr. Parakkal Rethy, former Professor of Department of Forestry, North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology, Arunachal Pradesh, India, for her contribution to the field of Angiosperm taxonomy.

Abstract
Isotrema haimingii Y.S. Huang & Yan Liu, a new species from Dayaoshan Mountain of Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically most similar to I. championii and I. yachangense in the shape of leaf blade, lanceolate-ovate bracteoles, oblong anthers, 3-lobed gynostemium and ellipsoid capsules, but can be easily distinguished from them by length of the basal perianth tube, colour of calyx limb and the outside of perianth tube, surface texture of calyx limb and throat. Photos of this new species, as well as a table to distinguish it from other morphologically similar Isotrema species, are provided. The threatened status of the new species is also assessed.

Diagnosis: Isotrema haimingii Y.S. Huang & Yan Liu is morphologically similar to I. championii (Merr. & Chun) X.X. Zhu, S. Liao & J.S. Ma and I. yachangense (B.G. Huang, Yan Liu & Y.S. Huang) Luu, Q.B. Nguyen & H.C. Nguyen in the shape of leaf blade, lanceolateovate bracteoles, oblong anthers, 3-lobed gynostemium and ellipsoid capsules, but can be distinguished from the former by cyme on old woody stems or in the axils of leafy shoots (vs. on old woody stems only); bracteoles ca. 5 × 2 mm (vs. ca. 10 × 5 mm); perianth tube yellowish-green outside (vs. mauve), basal portion of tube 4–5 cm long (vs. 5–7 cm long); calyx limb yellowish-green, with dark purple mural-like stripes on the upper portion and mauve stripes on the lower portion (vs. purple reticulate stripes, papillate), and from the latter by cyme on old woody stems or in the axils of leafy shoots (vs. on old woody stems only); pedicel 2.5–4 cm long (vs. 1–2 cm long); perianth tube yellowish-green outside (vs. mauve); basal portion of tube 4–5 cm long, longer than the upper (vs. 2–2.5 cm long, shorter than the upper); calyx limb yellowish-green, with dark purple mural-like stripes on the upper portion and mauve stripes on the lower portion (vs. yellow, with dark purple mural-like stripes), capsules villous (vs. glabrous). The detailed morphological comparisons amongst the three species are summarized in Table 1.

Etymology: The specific epithet is derived from Hai-Ming Tan, who has made important contributions to plant diversity conservation of Dayaoshan mountain in Guangxi, 
The Chinese name is given as “海明關木通” (pinyin: hǎi mǐng guān mū tōng).
