 Abstract
Prognathodes thanatos, new species, is described on the basis of the holotype from Mozambique, Africa. The new species is readily distinguished from congeners in having the following combination of live coloration details and morphological characters: head and body silvery white with three broad, dark brown bands; pelvic fin including spine black; dorsal-fin rays XIII,19; anal-fin rays III,15; lateral line short and incomplete with 26–29 pored scales; gill rakers 4 + 12–13 = 16–17; snout length 12.6% SL; and angle of preopercle finely serrate. The new species appears to be most closely related to Prognathodes guyotensis, a poorly known, deepwater species of butterflyfish known from very few specimens. The assignment of both species to the genus Prognathodes is accompanied by a critical reassessment and discussion of the currently inadequate definition of the genus.
