Anauchen sichang n. sp. & Anauchen khaochongpran n. sp.


ABSTRACT
Two new species of Anauchen from limestone areas, Sichang Island, Chon Buri Province and Khao Chong Pran, Ratchaburi Province are reported. Anauchen sichang n. sp. has four major apertural teeth with an angular notch located almost near apertural edge. The parietal, columellar lamellae, suprapalatal and upper palatal fold with small interpalatal fold located. Anauchen khaochongpran n. sp. has four small plicae i.e. parietal, upper and lower palatal and columellar notch.

ABSTRACT

Specimens of the ricefish, Oryzias haugiangensis, reported here for the first time from the brackish waters in the southeastern Thailand, were caught in a mangrove forest habitat. This study compares the morphometric and meristic characters and the karyotype of O. haugiangensis with those of the Andaman sea specimens of O. javanicus which are clearly distinguishable by the length of the snout, head, preanal, preanal fin, prepelvic fin and anal fin base, plus the body depth at the anterior of the anal fin origin. Oryzias haugiangensis is similar to O. javanicus in the number of pelvic fin and branchiostegal rays present, and in the diploid chromosome number (2n = 48), but differs from the latter in that it has a lower number of anal fin and pectoral fin rays and has a different karyotype, with 2n = 48 (2 SM + 23 A; NF = 54). Oryzias haugiangensis belongs to monoarmed chromosome group within the genus Oryzias.

ABSTRACT
A new ricefish, Oryzias songkhramensis n. sp., is described on the basis of fifty-one specimens (12.9 - 19.0 mm SL) from three localities in the Songkhram and Mekong basins in northeast Thailand and from two localities in Laos. The new species is distinguished from all other congeners by possessing the following combination of characters: anal-fin rays 15 - 16 (modally 16), bony contact organs on the anal-fin rays in males; a relatively anterior dorsal fin origin, opposite anal fin 13 - 14 (modally 14); vertebrae 27 - 29 (modally 28); cycloid scales 26 - 29 (modally 27) in lateral series, and predorsal scales 19-21 (modally 21). Oryzias songkhramensis n. sp. is similar to O. mekongensis in the number of dorsal-fin rays and branchiostegal rays, but differs from the latter in having fewer vertebrae, a lower number of scales in the predorsal and lateral scale series, and black and pale yellow marginal bands on the dorsal and ventral portions of the caudal fin (vs. bright orange and black marginal bands on the dorsal and ventral portions of the caudal fin in O. mekongensis). In addition, both the principal component analysis (PCA) and canominal discriminant analysis (CDA) for morphometric characters showed that O. songkhramensis and O. mekongensis differed from each other, although the morphological differences in O. songkhramensis were larger than those in both O. minutillus and O. mekongensis. Analysis of the phylogenetic relationships of six Oryzias species, based upon partial sequences of the mitochondrial control region, revealed three important groups; the javanicus, celebensis and mekongensis or latipes groups, and a close relationship between O. songkhramensis from Thailand and Laos (bootstrap support of 100%) with O. mekongensis as a sister group. The results of the phylogenetic study showed a tendency to classify O. songkhramensis as a member of the latipes group.

(23 ก.ค.) รศ.ดร.วิเชียร มากตุ่น คณบดีคณะวิทยาศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยศรีนครินทรวิโรฒ (มศว.) ในฐานะนักวิจัยด้านมีนะวิทยา ซึ่งค้นคว้าวิจัยด้านสายพันธุ์ปลา เปิดเผยว่า ขณะนี้ มศว. ได้ค้นพบปลาสายพันธุ์ใหม่ในนาข้าวของโลก ได้ตั้งชื่อว่า Oryzias songkhramensis Magtoon,2010 และยังไม่ได้ตั้งชื่อภาษาไทยซึ่งปลาดังกล่าวค้นพบในเขตลุ่มแม่น้ำโขง เขตอำเภอรัตนวาปี จ.หนองคาย นอกจากนี้ยังพบปลาสายพันธุ์นี้ในประเทศสาธารณรัฐประชาธิปไตยประชาชนลาวหรือ บริเวณพื้นที่ลาวตอนกลาง ทั้งนี้การค้นพบปลาสายพันธุ์ใหม่ดังกล่าวบ่งบอกให้เห็นถึงความสมบูรณ์ตาม ธรรมชาติในเขตลุ่มน้ำโขงในประเทศไทย ส่วนลักษณะของปลาชนิดนี้จะเป็นปลาในนาข้าว ขนาดเล็ก ความยาวประมาณ 1 เซนติเมตร อาศัยอยู่กันเป็นฝูงและกินตัวอ่อนของพวกยุงเป็นอาหาร และยังกินตัวอ่อนของแมลงบางชนิดที่เป็นศัตรูพืช ซึ่งเป็นการควบคุมความสมดุลของธรรมชาติ โดยไม่จำเป็นต้องใช้ยาฆ่าแมลงในนาข้าวมากจนเกินความจำเป็น

รศ.ดร.วิเชียว กล่าวต่อไปว่า ทุกวันนี้เราพบปลาในนาข้าวทั้งสิ้น 24 สปีชี่ จากทั่วโลก Oryzias songkhramensis Magtoon,2010 จึงถือเป็นสปีชี่ที่ 25ของโลก และที่ผ่านมาประเทศไทยพบปลาในนาข้าวมาแล้วทั้งสิ้น 4 สปีชี่ หากรวม Oryzias songkhramensis Magtoon,2010 ทำให้ประเทศไทยค้นพบปลาในนาข้าวทั้งสิ้น 5 สปีชี่ อย่างไรก็ตาม การค้นพบครั้งนี้จะทำให้วงการมีนะวิทยาเกิดการตื่นตัวมากขึ้น และจะเป็นประโยชน์ทางด้านวิทยาศาสตร์อย่างกว้างขวาง โดยเฉพาะด้านมีนะวิทยา ความรู้ทางด้านปลาในนาข้าว และขณะนี้ประเทศญี่ปุ่นให้ความสนใจอย่างมาก โดย มศว. มีความร่วมมือกับ 3 มหาวิทยาลัยในประเทศญี่ปุ่น คือ ม.โตเกียว ม.มินาฮาตะ และม.ชินชู ศึกษาปลาในนาข้าวในแถบทวีปเอเชียด้วย

[Ichthyology • 2009] A revised taxonomic Account of ricefish Oryzias (Beloniformes; Adrianichyidae), in Thailand, Indonesia and Japan



ABSTRACT
A taxonomic account of Oryzias minutillus, O. mekongensis, O. dancena, and O. javanicus from Thailand, O. celebensis from Indonesia and O. latipes from Japan are redescribed. Six distinct species are recognized. Keys, descriptions and illustrations of the species are presented. Morphological differences between and within all six species are clarified. Twenty-two morphometric characters and ten meristic characters were examined, and 14 morphometric and nine meristic characters were found to differ amongst the six species. Anal-fin ray numbers of O. cellebensis, O. javanicus, O. dancena, O. minutillus, O. latipes and O. mekongensis were 22, 23, 24, 19, 18 and 15, respectively. These differences suggest that the six species may be reproductively isolated from each other.

Abstract
Ricefishes, known best by the model organism, the medaka, Oryzias latipes Temminck & Schlegel, 1846, comprise the family Adrianichthyidae, which ranges broadly throughout fresh and brackish waters of Central, South and Southeast Asia and the Indo-Malay-Philippines Archipelago as far east as Timor. Twenty-eight Recent species are recognized here in two monophyletic genera, Adrianichthys and Oryzias. Xenopoecilus and Horaichthys are placed in synonymy of Oryzias for the first time. Adrianichthys comprises four species from Lake Poso, Sulawesi, Indonesia. Oryzias comprises 24 species that live throughout the range of the family. A fossil genus and species, †Lithopoecilus brouweri from the Miocene of central Sulawesi, is included tentatively in the Adrianichthyidae. Evidence for the sister group relationship of adrianichthyids and exocoetoids is reviewed briefly and that relationship corroborated. Monophyly of adrianichthyids is likewise strongly supported here. Species groups within Oryzias are diagnosed as monophyletic largely based on osteology, colour pattern and meristic variation. They correspond only in part to species groups previously recognized based on chromosome constitution. Miniature species do not comprise a monophyletic group; disjunct absolute size in close relatives has evolved repeatedly. Oryzias latipes is a member of a species complex that includes O. luzonensis, O. curvinotus and the miniatures O. sinensis and O. mekongensis. A new species, Oryzias bonneorum sp. nov., is described from Lake Lindu, Sulawesi, Indonesia. Lectotypes are designated for Haplochilus celebensis Weber, 1894 and Haplochilus timorensis Weber & de Beaufort, 1922.

Oryzias woworae • Daisy’s Ricefish

Oryzias woworae, a new species of ricefish, is described from a freshwater habitat on Muna Island off the southeastern coast of the main island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The new species is distinguished from all other known ricefishes by a remarkable color pattern of both sexes in life: the ventral surface of head and body anterior to the pelvic fins, dorsal portion of pectoral fins, dorsal-fin base, posterior portion of anal-fin base, caudal peduncle, and dorsal and ventral portions of caudal fin are brilliant red; the midlateral scales from just posterior to the eye to the caudal-fin base and the body scales anterior to the anal fin and ventral to midlateral scales are steel blue; the blue coloration is most prominent in adult males. Oryzias woworae, the smallest known ricefish from Sulawesi, is hypothesized to be a member of an unnamed clade of ricefishes diagnosed by a truncate, rather than lunate or emarginate, caudal fin. Description of O. woworae brings the recognized number of species in the beloniform family Adrianichthyidae to 29, 13 of which are endemic to Sulawesi. Ricefishes, in particular the new species, may serve as icons to generate interest in conservation of the endemic freshwater biota of Sulawesi.

Holotype.—MZB 15398 (Fig. 3), male, 25.0 mm SL, Indonesia, Sulawesi Tenggara, Muna Island (Fig. 4), Regency of Muna, District Parigi, Village Wakumoro, Mata air Fotuno (Fotuno oe; Fig. 5), 5u04939.70S, 122u30925.70E, 13 September 2007, D. Wowor.

Etymology.— The trivial name woworae honors Daisy Wowor, a systematic carcinologist from the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense, who collected specimens of the new species and had the foresight to take color photographs of the fish alive.

Distribution and habitat.— The single known collection of O. woworae was from the type locality, a freshwater stream with a canopy cover of about 80 percent and substrate of mud and sand with leaf litter (Fig. 5).

ABSTRACT
A new species of ricefish is described from Lake Masapi, a small satellite lake of the Malili Lakes system in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Oryzias hadiatyae, new species, is known only from this single lake. It differs from all other adrianichthyids in Sulawesi in having a well marked concavity on the snout, a slender but relatively wide body with elongated snout and slightly upwardly directed mouth, pelvic fins with 5–6 fi n rays and anal fi n with 19–22 fi n rays, both inserting relatively close to the rear end of the body, dorsal fin with 8–10 rays inserted above 10–12th anal fi n ray, 28–30 vertebrae, only 27–31 lateral scales, dark brown blotches on the lateral body in adult males, and no blotches in females. This brings the number of ricefi sh species in Sulawesi to 16 (four Adrianichthys, 12 Oryzias), with four endemic lacustrine Oryzias in the Malili Lakes system. In addition, the riverine ricefi sh Oryzias celebensis, known so far only from Sulawesi’s southwestern arm and a single river in East Timor, is here reported for the fi rst time from a drainage in Central Sulawesi.

Oryzias hadiatyae, new species
(common name: Renny’s ricefish)

Material examined. –
Holotype - MZB 18491 (34.2 mm SL), male, Indonesia, Sulawesi: South Sulawesi Province; Larona drainage; Lake Masapi, southern shore between 2°50.837'S 121°21.116'E and the lake’s outlet, approx. 600 m westwards of this position; F. Herder, J. Pfaender, J. Schwarzer & R. K. Hadiaty 15–16 Apr.2004

Etymology. – The specific name, hadiatyae, honors Renny Kurnia Hadiaty who contributed significantly to the exploration of fi sh diversity in the Malili Lakes area. Renny also discovered this endemic ricefi sh in remote Lake Masapi.

Oryzias nebulosus sp. nov.
(English name: nebulous ricefish)


Abstract
Two new species of ricefishes or buntingi, Adrianichthys roseni and Oryzias nebulosus, are described from Lake Poso, Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia, bringing to 12 the number of endemic ricefishes known from Sulawesi. Adrianichthys roseni and its sole congener, A. kruyti, are distinguished from other relatively large-bodied ricefishes, Xenopoecilus, in having orbits that project beyond the dorsal profile of the head; paired preethmoid cartilages (versus single or absent in Xenopoecilus); and 13–16 (versus 8–13) dorsal fin rays. Also, as in A. kruyti, the lower jaw of A. roseni is enclosed in the upper jaw when the mouth is closed; however, the upper jaw is not as large and broadly expanded as in A. kruyti. Adrianichthys roseni differs further from A. kruyti in having fewer scales in a lateral series (approximately 63–65 versus 70–75), attaining a smaller maximum recorded standard length (90 mm versus 109 mm), and having the lateral process of the pelvic bone in line with the fifth, rather than the eighth, pleural rib. Oryzias nebulosus shares with O. nigrimas, also from Lake Poso, a unique sexual dichromatism in preserved specimens: adult males are dark gray to black, whereas females are a lighter grayishyellow to brown. Relative to O. nigrimas, O. nebulosus is a small species (maximum recorded SL 33 mm versus 51 mm), with pelvic fins relatively anterior (lateral process of pelvic bone is in line with the third, fourth, or fifth, modally fourth, rather than the fourth or fifth, modally fifth, pleural rib), dorsal fin relatively anterior (origin above the 12–14th anal fin ray as opposed to the 15–17th anal fin ray), precaudal vertebrae 11–13, modally 12 (versus 13–14, modally 13), and relatively straight, narrow and slender (as opposed to curved, broad, and robust) ossified and cartilaginous portions of the gill arches. Endemic buntingi are threatened by introduction of exotic species, overfishing, and pollution. A conservation plan includes rearing native fishes for local use as ornamental fishes and possible reintroduction.

Oryzias nebulosus sp. nov.
(English name: nebulous ricefish)
Holotype. MZB 11649, adult male, 32.5 mm SL. Lake Poso at Peura, eastern shore of lake approx. 10 km S of Tentena, Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia, collected by L.R. Parenti, K.D. Louie, P. Beta, et al., 13 August 1995.
Etymology. The specific name nebulosus, misty or foggy, to connote a species previously unrecognized among the melanistic Oryzias in Lake Poso.

Adrianichthys roseni sp. nov.
(English name: Rosen’s buntingi)

Adrianichthys kruyti (not of Weber); Rosen and Parenti, 1981: 16, Fig. 15b (Lake Poso, dorsal gill arch osteology); Parenti, 1989:80, Fig. 1 (Lake Poso, photo).
Holotype. MZB 6732 (ex. USNM 322424), gravid female, 90 mm SL, Lake Poso, Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia, 4–5 September 1978, collected by N.J. Wilimovsky.
Paratype. USNM 322425, cleared and counterstained female, 73 mm SL, collected with the holotype.
Etymology. The specific name, roseni, honors the late Donn E. Rosen, in recognition of his enthusiasm, generosity, and enduring contributions to atherinomorph systematics.

A new species of ricefish, Oryzias mekongensis, from the Mekong basin of northeast Thailand is described. It is characterized by a small size (11.5-14.0 mm SL) and 13-16 (modally 14) anal-fin rays. Live males have bright orange longitudinal subdistal stripes along upper and lower margins of caudal fin. The karyotype revealed 2n, 48 chromosomes consisting of 1 meta-, 4 submeta-, 12 subtelo- and 7 acrocentric pairs, the number of major arms (NF) being 58. Estimated DNA value was 1.5 pg per nucleus. This species is distinct from another small species, O. minutillus distributed in central, north and south Thailand, by morphological, karyotypical and reproductive differences. O. mekongensis belongs to the biarmed chromosome group which is distributed in east Asia; this species is most closely related to 0. curvinotus from Hainan Island. The new species having the smallest NF, is considered to be karyotypically most primitive among the members of the biarmed chromosome group so far studied.

Abstract
Polydesmidae are represented in Taiwan by seven species in two genera. Neither of the genera is endemic to Taiwan, but six of the species are, including five new: Nipponesmus minor sp. n., Epanerchodus bispinosus sp. n., E. curtigonopus sp. n., E. flagellifer sp. n. and E. pinguis sp. n. In addition, the diagnosis of the hitherto enigmatic genus Nipponesmus Chamberlin & Wang, 1953 is refined vis-à-vis the especially similar, Central Asian, Siberian and Eastern European genus Schizoturanius Verhoeff, 1931, chiefly based on new material of the type-species N. shirinensis Chamberlin & Wang, 1953; this species is adequately redescribed and represents still another Taiwanese endemic. A key to all three currently known species of Nipponesmus Chamberlin & Wang, 1953 is given. The highly speciose Central to East Asian genus Epanerchodus Attems, 1901 is represented in Taiwan by five species, all keyed, including E. orientalis Attems, 1901, which is long known to be highly variable in Japan and found particularly polymorphous and apparently allochthonous in Taiwan. The following synonymy is formalized: E. orientalis orientalis Attems, 1901 = E. orientalis takakuwai Verhoeff, 1913, syn. n. The genus Usbekodesmus Lohmander, 1932 is formally synonymized with Epanerchodus Attems, 1901, syn. n., resulting in the following new formal transfers: Epanerchodus redikorzevi (Lohmander, 1932), E. swatensis (Golovatch, 1991), E. varius (Geoffroy & Golovatch, 2004), E. anachoretus (Golovatch, 1986), E. buddhis (Golovatch, 1986), E. occultus (Golovatch, 1986), E. sacer (Golovatch, 1987), E. theocraticus (Golovatch, 1990) and E. theosophicus (Golovatch, 1986), all comb. n. ex Usbekodesmus. The distributions of all seven species of Polydesmidae occurring in Taiwan are mapped and discussed.

ABSTRACT
The small Southeast to East Asian genus Pacidesmus currently encompasses seven species, all keyed and mapped, including three new from caves in Guangxi Province, China: P. tiani n. sp., P. bedosae n. sp. and P. armatus n. sp. All six congeners from southern China have only been found in caves, all likely representing troglobites, whereas the sole epigean species is known from a high-montane forest in northern Thailand. Such a vast disjunction is certainly due to undercollecting, also meaning a far more diverse fauna of Pacidesmus to actually exist.

ABSTRACT
A new dragon millipede species, Desmoxytes philippina, from the Philippines is described. This first Philippine dragon millipede species expands the previously known distribution of the group, from Southeast Asia (Desmoxytes Chamberlin, 1923) and Australia (Desmoxytoides Mesibov, 2006).
