Abstract
A new species, Zingiber procumbens Nob.Tanaka & M.M.Aung (Zingiberaceae), from
Kayah State, eastern Myanmar, is described with color plates. Zingiber procumbens is assignable
to section Cryptanthium Horan. based on lateral inflorescences on the procumbent peduncles. This
species is similar to Z. bradleyanum Craib in vegetative characters, but well distinguished from it
by a combination of long bilobed ligules, lamina with silvery line, procumbent peduncle, tubular
bracts with dark reddish stripes, and flowers with purple orbicular labellum. Detailed descriptions,
color plates and preliminary IUCN assessments are provided.
