[Herpetology • 2026] Megophrys praestes • A Comprehensive Review of the Megophrys (Brachytarsophrys) carinensis group (Amphibia: Megophryidae) reveals A New giant horned frog from Indochina and Evidence for Taxonomic Inflation in the feae Group

Abstract
The Megophrys subgenus Brachytarsophrys includes the largest species of Asian horned frogs north of the Malay Peninsula. The subgenus comprises two clades known as the feae group and carinensis group. Though the Chinese members of the feae group have been the focus of recent taxonomic studies, little is known of the two members of the carinensis group, M. carinensis and M. intermedia, from Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam. Megophrys carinensis was long considered to be widespread in China until, relatively recently, some populations were found to represent species of the feae group, indicating that there is widespread confusion regarding the identification of M. carinensis. No sequence data have been available for M. carinensis and M. intermedia from their respective type localities to verify their genetic identities.

In this study, a near complete review of the global knowledge of the carinensis group is provided based on the literature, supplemented with multi-locus molecular phylogenetic analyses and a comprehensive morphological dataset for 35 adult specimens and five juveniles. Recently collected samples from 12 specimens of M. intermedia (including from the Langbiang Plateau) were sequenced, and a minimally destructive archival DNA Illumina protocol was used to obtain the complete mitochondrial genome for a 137-year-old ethanol preserved “topotype” of M. carinensis.

Molecular phylogenetic analyses identified two deeply divergent lineages in M. intermedia, one from the type locality of M. intermedia and a second representing all other previously sequenced populations of M. “intermedia” from outside the upper reaches of the Langbiang Plateau. The morphological data for adult frogs also strongly supported the recognition of two diagnosable taxa within M. intermedia sensu lato. Adults differed in morphometrics and qualitative characteristics, but the tadpoles differed slightly in morphometrics but not in any qualitative characteristics. Detailed taxonomic redescriptions are provided for both M. carinensis and M. intermedia, and a new species of Megophrys from the carinensis group is described. A comprehensive literature review of these three species is provided, identifications of populations are updated, and new information is given on behaviour and habitat association. A counter argument to the recent proposal to treat some of Malcolm Smith’s species epithets as nouns in apposition to the gender of the genus name is provided, clarifying the spelling of M. intermedia (and proposing to reject Alcalus pullus as the valid name for A. tasanae), and correcting the gender of M. carinensis and M. platyparieta. We highlight extensive misunderstandings in the literature regarding the identities of the type series of both M. carinensis and M. intermedia, and revise the geographic distributions of all species based on published and unpublished evidence (including online citizen science data).

Published records of M. “carinensis” from China, Laos, Vietnam, and India are individually reviewed to clarify the taxonomic identities of many of the populations. All Chinese and Vietnamese populations are suggested to represent feae group taxa, and we provide the most complete account of the distribution of this group. Fundamental errors are identified in the original descriptions of all recent feae group species (M. popei, M. orientalis, Megophrys guilinensis comb. nov., Megophrys qiannanensis comb. nov., Megophrys wenshanensis comb. nov., and Megophrys wui comb. nov.), surmising that there is currently insufficient evidence to morphologically diagnose the marginally genetically divergent named populations M. orientalis, M. guilinensis comb. nov. and M. wui comb. nov. as distinct from M. popei, and propose their synonymy. Beyond updates to the identification of populations resulting from this proposed synonymy, provisional updates are recommended for the identifications of more than 30 additional known Chinese populations.

Megophrys intermedia is now range-restricted to upper elevations on the Langbiang Plateau. Based on a review of the species’ extinction threat status, we recommend that it should potentially be considered Endangered, further highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive modern taxonomic redescriptions of historically described species in Southeast Asia.

Summary
A new species, Syzygium khammouanense V.S.Dang, Tagane & Soulad. (Myrtaceae), discovered from Khounkham District, Khammouane Province, central Laos, is described and illustrated. The new species is distinct from other Syzygium species by having 26 – 30 pairs of secondary veins and a strongly quadrangular hypanthium, 1 cm long. A description, provisional conservation assessment, photographs and vernacular name of the new species are provided.

Syzygium khammouanense V.S.Dang, Tagane & Soulad. sp. nov. 

Etymology. The specific epithet “khammouanense” refers to the name of the province containing the type locality, in Laos.

Vernacular name. ຫວ້າຄຳມ່ວນ (Wa Khammouane, suggested here). “Wa” is the common Lao name for the genus Syzygium, and “khammouanense” represents the province’s name where the type material was collected.

Abstract
A new species of Saraca (Fabaceae-Detarioideae), S. laotica, is described and illustrated from Laos. It is characterized by leaflets with (9–)11–20 pairs of secondary veins, relatively larger, persistent and showy bracts of 1.4–3.3 × 0.6–0.9 cm, calyx tube of 27–36 mm, 4 stamens, anthers 1.9 mm long, by which combination, it is clearly distinguished from previously known species in the genus. Information on its habitat, phenology, vernacular name, and preliminary conservation assessment are also provided.

Saraca laotica Tagane & Soulad., sp. nov.  
 
Diagnosis:—Similar to Saraca griffithiana and S. declinata in having persistent bracts and 4 stamens, but distinguished from the former by its midrib sunken adaxially (vs. prominent in S. griffithiana), longer bracts (1.4–3.3 cm long vs. shorter than 0.5 cm), and longer calyx tube (27–36 mm vs. 12–18 mm), and from the latter by more leaflets [5–9 pairs vs. 3–5(–7) pairs in S. declinata], more secondary veins [(9–)11–20 pairs vs. (6–)8–10(–12) pairs], larger bracts (1.4–3.3 × 0.6–0.9 cm vs. 0.3–1.2 × 0.1–0.7 cm), and longer anthers (1.9–2.2 mm vs. 0.75 mm long).

Etymology:—The specific epithet “laotica” refers to the country Laos, where the new species was discovered. 
Vernacular name:—ຄໍາລາວ (Kham Lao) (proposed here). In Lao, “Kham” means golden, referring to the color of the flowers, and “Lao” is the country name, indicating the locality where this species is found.

Abstract
A new species, Firmiana laotica (Malvaceae), and five new records, Justicia oreophila (Acanthaceae), Aganosma wallichii (Apocynaceae), Colebrookea oppositifolia (Lamiaceae), Myristica yunnanensis (Myristicaceae), and Brachytome hainanensis (Rubiaceae) are reported for the flora of Laos. Voucher specimens, photographs, and ecological information in Laos are provided for each species.

  Firmiana laotica is similar to F. fulgens (Wall. ex Mast.) K.Schum., but distinguished by leaf lobe apex (long-acuminate to caudate in F. laotica vs. acute to obtuse F. fulgens), lower leaf surface color (glaucous vs. not glaucous), depth of calyx lobes (lobed (1/3−)1/2 of calyx length vs. lobed 1/3–1/4 of calyx length), and number of stamens (15 in 5 groups of 3 vs. 20 or 25 in 5 groups of 4 or 5).

Abstract
Three new species of many-plumed moths are described from Laos: Pterotopteryx ivonini Kovtunovich & Ustjuzhanin, sp. n.Pterotopteryx elenaivshinae Kovtunovich & Ustjuzhanin, sp. n., and Pterotopteryx ismailovi Kovtunovich & Ustjuzhanin, sp. n. The first image of the male genitalia of Pterotopteryx toxophila (Meyrick, 1906), comb. n. This work reports the first records of many-plumed moths from Laos.

[Entomology • 2022] Scarlata namsanam • A New Species of the Genus Scarlata (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) from Laos

Abstract 
Scarlata namsanam sp. nov. from Laos is described and illustrated. The type series was collected on wet soil near the drying stream within a primary monsoon lowland tropical forest. This new species is most similar to S. guichardii Skowron Volponi, 2022, from which it differs in the coloration of the hind tibia, forewing and abdomen and in noticeably wider discal spot of the hindwing.

Abstract
Two new species, Melastoma calcicolum Souvann. & Tagane sp. nov. and M. souladethianum Souvann. & Nob.Tanaka sp. nov. (Melastomataceae), are described from limestone karst habitats in Khammouane Province, central Laos. Descriptions, photographs, distribution, habitat, phenology, and initial conservation statuses of both newly described species are given. A key to the species of Melastoma in Laos including currently reported species is provided. These discoveries result from extensive fieldwork conducted between 2022 and 2025 in protected areas including Phou Hin Poun National protected area and Phou Pha Marn area. M. calcicolum sp. nov. is distinguished from M. saigonenese by its terete twigs, narrow lanceolate leaves, spaced penicillate emergences on the hypanthium, stalk of emergences on hypanthium shorter, glabrous sepals, and longer styles, while M. souladethianum sp. nov. differs from M. pellegrinianum by its terete branches, small inflorescences with 2–4 flowers, and sparsely bristled hypanthium with strigose hairs. Both species are currently known only from their type localities, occurring in exposed limestone areas, and are preliminarily assessed as Endangered and Critically Endangered based on IUCN criteria due to their restricted distributions and small population sizes. These findings highlight the high botanical diversity and endemism of Laos’s limestone ecosystems and underscore the importance of continued botanical exploration in the region.

Melastoma calcicolum Souvann. & Tagane sp. nov.

Diagnosis: Similar to Melastoma saigonense (Kuntze) Merr., but differs in its terete young twigs  (vs.  (sub)quadrangular), narrower leaves (ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, length/width ratio 2.8–4.1 vs. ovate to elliptic, length/width ratio 1.8–2), penicillate emergences spaced apart (vs. densely covered by penicillate emergences), stalk of emergences on hypanthium 1–1.5 mm long (vs. 3–5 mm long), glabrous sepals except for ciliate margins (vs. outer surface densely covered with bristles), and longer styles (20–25 mm long vs. 15–20 mm long).

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to the limestone habitat.

Vernacular name: ເອນອ້າຂຸນກອງແລງ En R Khoun Kongleng (meaning: ʻKhoun Kongleng's Melastomaʼ).

Melastoma souladethianum Souvann. & Nob.Tanaka sp. nov. 

Diagnosis: Similar to Melastoma pellegrinianum (H.Boissieu) Karst.Mey., but it differs in having terete young branches (vs. quadrangular in M. pellegrinianum), inflorescences with 2–4 flowers (vs. more than 15), hypanthia sparsely covered in bristles with sparse strigose hairs (vs. bristles without strigose hairs).

Etymology: The specific epithet honors Dr. Phetlasy Souladeth, curator of the FOF herbarium of the National University of Laos, who led our field trips and is an excellent plant taxonomist. She has greatly contributed to elucidating the flora of Laos and has described more than 30 new species and recorded over 100 species to Laos’ flora.

Vernacular name: ເອນອ້າເພັດຊົມພູ En R Phetsomphou (meaning: purple diamond’s Melastomaʼ).

Abstract
Dicnecidia narathiwatensis Thonongtor and Pinkaew sp. nov. is described based on a single male specimen from Narathiwat Province, southernmost Thailand. In addition, D. fumidana Kuznetzov, 1997, previously recorded only from Vietnam, is recorded for the first time from Thailand and Laos. Illustrations of adults and genitalia are provided. The discovery of the new species increases the total number of described Dicnecidia to four.

Abstract
Two new species of Araliaceae, Heptapleurum karsticola and Trevesia laotica, are described from limestone karst in central Laos. Heptapleurum karsticola was found in Khammouane Province, and the second species, T. laotica, was found in Bolikhamxai and Khammouane Provinces. Information regarding the distribution, habitat, phenology, vernacular names, preliminary conservation assessment, DNA barcodes, and taxonomic notes compared to other closely related species is provided for each species.

Abstract
The Oriental footman-moth genus Mithuna Moore, 1878 is reviewed. Two new genera and 17 new species are described: Eilemithuna gen. n. (type species: Ilema transducta de Joannis, 1930); Mithunoconosia gen. n. (type species: Mithuna clivusa Bucsek, 2012); Mithuna armata sp. n. (NE India), Mithuna atkinsoni sp. n. (NE India), Mithuna bolovena sp. n. (Laos), Mithuna bucseki sp. n. (Thailand, Laos and Vietnam), Mithuna flabellata sp. n. (Thailand), Mithuna fletcheri sp. n. (NE India), Mithuna lamdonga sp. n. (Vietnam), Mithuna meghalaya sp. n. (NE India), Mithuna ochrocephala sp. n. (Thailand), Mithuna phahompoka sp. n. (Thailand), Mithuna pianma sp. n. (China, Yunnan), Mithuna robusta sp. n. (Thailand), Mithuna securis sp. n. (Vietnam), Mithuna suthepia sp. n. (Thailand), Mithuna swanni sp. n. (Myanmar), Mithuna thaica sp. n. (Thailand), and Mithuna wilemani sp. n. (Taiwan). Abstract
A new species of Knema (Myristicaceae), K. namkadingensis is described from the Nam Kading National Protected Area, Bolikhamxai Province in central Laos. It is found growing in dry evergreen forest. The species can be distinguished from other species of Knema in Laos and surrounding countries by its small habit of up to 3 m tall, small leaves shorter than 10 cm long, small male flowers measuring 2.5–3 mm in diameter, and obovoid-ellipsoid fruits with acute apices.

Abstract
Subterranean ecosystems, particularly the karst environments of Asia, represent a significant but underexplored frontier for biodiversity exploration. This paper focuses on the rove beetle subfamily Pselaphinae (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) from caves and related subterranean habitats throughout the continent. Drawing upon extensive material accumulated primarily from China and Thailand, supplemented by records from Vietnam, Laos, and the Philippines, an exceptionally diverse subterranean fauna is herein delineated, including the description of 43 new species: Araneibatrus antennatus sp. nov., A. huangsunbini sp. nov., A. leclerci sp. nov., A. thamluang sp. nov., A. thamphamon sp. nov., A. thamphathong sp. nov., A. thamprakaiphet sp. nov.; Batrisiella longlina sp. nov.; Batrisocenus affinis sp. nov., Batrisocenus dushizi sp. nov., Batrisocenus filum sp. nov., Batrisocenus mojiachengi sp. nov., Batrisocenus shilin sp. nov., Batrisocenus trungtrang sp. nov., Tribasodites circinatus sp. nov., T. disuensis sp. nov., T. duanus sp. nov., T. guilinensis sp. nov., T. huchanghaoi sp. nov., T. miaoting sp. nov., T. pakchong sp. nov., T. shui sp. nov., T. uncinus sp. nov., T. zhouhanpingi sp. nov.; Zopherobatrus excavatus sp. nov., Z. kaiyangus sp. nov., Z. sinanus sp. nov., Z. wulongensis sp. nov.; Batraxis soparki sp. nov.; Nipponobythus haozhu sp. nov., N. jinji sp. nov., N. liyunchuni sp. nov., N. long sp. nov., N. minor sp. nov. (soil-dwelling), N. niubi sp. nov., N. platycephalus sp. nov., N. proiectus sp. nov., N. punctatus sp. nov., N. qian sp. nov., N. sanxian sp. nov., N. suxian sp. nov., N. wufengensis sp. nov., and N. zengtingkaii sp. nov. The present work nearly doubles the documented diversity of cavernicolous Pselaphinae in Asia, increasing the number of known species from 48 to 90, highlighting the profound geographical biases in previous research and the immense, cryptic diversity harbored within these habitats. Identification keys to supertribes, tribes, genera, and species are provided, along with a checklist of cavernicolous Pselaphinae recorded from Asia. Moreover, this study reports novel instances of pronounced male antennal polymorphism and identifies potential morphological correlates of sexual conflict, specifically, putative female resistance traits, within these cave-adapted lineages, thereby illuminating evolutionary dynamics operative in aphotic ecosystems. Collectively, this work establishes a crucial taxonomic framework for the Asian cavernicolous fauna and stresses the urgent need for continued biospeleological exploration to effectively catalogue and conserve the unique biodiversity endemic to these karst systems.

Abstract
Grewia souladethiana (Malvaceae-Grewioideae) is described and illustrated from Phou Hin Poun National Park, Khammouane Province, in central Laos. The new species grows at the edge of evergreen broad-leaved forest and in open grassland on the foot of limestone hills. To confirm the validity of the new species, diagnostic morphological characters were compared based on literature and herbarium materials at BKF, FOF, KAG an VNM as well as online digitized images. Morphologically it is similar to G. thailandica in having acuminate leaf apex, serrate leaf margin, and axillary inflorescences which are 2‒3-flowered and with erect peduncle, but distinguished by its tree habit, shorter petioles, smaller sepals and petals, and solitary or 2-lobed fruits. A description, photographs, line drawings, vernacular name and preliminary conservation status are provided for it, as well as a key to species of Grewia in Laos is provided.
