Abstract
A new species of Baetidae, Alainites siamensis sp. nov., is described from Thailand. This new species is closely related to Alainites lingulatus Tong & Dudgeon, 2000, Alainites laetificus (Kang & Yang, 1994) and Alainites yixiani (Gui & Lu, 1999). Species delimitation based on morphological and molecular (mitochondrial COI sequences) evidence is provided. The discovery of this species confirms the wide distribution of Alainites Waltz & McCafferty, 1994 in Southeast Asia.

Key Words: distribution, diversity, mayflies, Southeast Asia, systematic

Alainites siamensis sp. nov., female larva (middle instar larva) habitus:
A Dorsal view; B Lateral view; C Ventral view.
Scale bar: 1 mm.

Alainites siamensis sp. nov.

Diagnosis: Alainites siamensis sp. nov. is closely related to A. lingulatus, A. laetificus and A. yixiani; these species are distributed in the Southeast Asia. The new species can be separated from the other species by the following combination of characters: i) the shape of labial palp, ii) the setation on tibia, iii) the number of denticles of the claws, iv) the degree of development and spination of paraproct prolongation, v) the number of spines on distal margin of paraproct, vi) number of pairs of gills (Table 4).

Ecological notes: The larvae of Alainites siamensis sp. nov. mainly live among aquatic plants and roots of riparian plants in slow to moderately flowing streams (Fig. 6). The species seems to be rather widely distributed in the northwestern and northern Thailand, but is rare and not abundant (Fig. 7).

Etymology: The specific epithet of this species, siam (noun), refers to the old name of Thailand and to the known distribution of the species.

The sampling sites and habitats of Alainites siamensis sp. nov. larvae:

[Botany • 2022] Unveiling Utricularia amethystina’s True Colours: A Taxonomic Revision of One of the Largest Species Complexes (U. sect. Foliosa: Lentibulariaceae)

Utricularia amethystina  Salzm. ex Saint-Hilaire & Girard (1838)

in Baleeiro, Gonella, Sano & Jobson, 2022.

Abstract
The genus Utricularia (Lentibulariaceae) is the most diverse and cosmopolitan among carnivorous plants. Utricularia sect. Foliosa sensu Taylor (1989) is composed of three South American species, U. amethystina, U. tricolor and U. tridentata, the first species being recognized as highly diverse. In his taxonomic revision of the genus Utricularia, Taylor (1989) circumscribed the polymorphic U. amethystina comprising 27 synonyms involving a wide variation in corolla size and colour, morphology of corolla parts, indumentum, and overall plant size. The original publications of the synonyms provide limited information disencouraging a revision study and therefore inflating U. amethystina as new variations were discovered. In order to shed light onto the problem, a taxonomic revision, a morphometric and a molecular study showed evidence of a larger complex than previously thought, and U. amethystina s.str. sister to U. tricolor. A previously published molecular phylogeny provided strong support for all sampled U. amethystina synonyms and potential new taxa found to be nested outside the U. amethystina s.str. and U. tricolor clade. Here, we incorporate these new relationships and describe and comment on the species that comprise U. sect. Foliosa, including the restablishment of six synonyms, the description of three new species and lectotypification of five names. The current study disentangles U. amethystina complex so that further studies can approach it in a more realistic way, especially studies using population genetics tools. Our study shows that more needs to be done and here U. hirtella is presented as a new complex.

[Botany • 2022] Solanum scalarium (Solanaceae) • A Newly-described Dioecious Bush Tomato from Judbarra/Gregory National Park, Northern Territory, Australia

Solanum scalarium Martine & T.M.Williams,

in Williams, Hayes, McDonnell, Cantley, Jobson & Martine, 2022.

Abstract
A new species of functionally dioecious bush tomato of Solanum subgenus Leptostemonum is described. Solanum scalarium Martine & T.M.Williams, sp. nov., is a member of the taxonomically challenging “Kimberley dioecious clade” in Australia and differs from other species in the group in its spreading decumbent habit and conspicuously prickly male floral rachis. The species is so far known from one site in Judbarra/Gregory National Park in the Northern Territory. Ex situ crosses and confirmation of inaperturate pollen grains produced in morphologically cosexual flowers indicate that these flowers are functionally female and the species is functionally dioecious. The scientific name reflects the ladder-like appearance of the inflorescence rachis armature of male individuals, the stone staircase that provides access to the type locality at the Escarpment Lookout Walk, and the importance of maintaining equitable and safe access to outdoor spaces. The common name Garrarnawun Bush Tomato is proposed in recognition of the lookout point at this site, a traditional meeting place of the Wardaman and Nungali-Ngaliwurru peoples whose lands overlap in this area.

Solanum scalarium Martine & T.M.Williams, sp. nov.

Diagnosis: This species is distinguished from Solanum dioicum W.Fitzg. (as currently delineated) and other Australian functionally dioecious Solanum species of the “Kimberley dioecious clade” by the combination of a spreading decumbent habit and the staminate inflorescence axis armed with relatively stout, spreading, straight prickles.

Etymology: Latin scalare from scala, ladder or stair, and suffix aris, pertaining to; the epithet scalarium is the genitive plural of scalare, indicating ladder-like appearance of staminate inflorescence rachises, which are conspicuously and unusually armed with relatively stout, spreading, straight prickles resembling ladder steps. It is also a nod to the type locality at the Escarpment Walk, Judbarra/Gregory National Park, where stone stairs lead from the car park up to the habitat of this species. By choosing this name we acknowledge the access these steps provide to the newly-described species as well as the importance of providing broad access to nature, outdoor recreation, and scientific discovery. We suggest the use of Garrarnawun Bush Tomato for the English-language common name of the species in recognition of the Garrarnawun Lookout near where the type collection was made, a traditional meeting place of the Wardaman and Nungali-Ngaliwurru peoples whose lands overlap in this area (Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory 2021).

Abstract
During preparation of a revision of the genus Eranthemum (Acanthaceae), it became evident that nine specimens from eastern and south-eastern floristic regions of Thailand and southern Laos represent a new species which is herein described, illustrated and given the name Eranthemum decumbens. The new species has affinities to E. strictum and E. roseum. A key to the species of Eranthemum occurring in Thailand is provided, together with ecological data, distribution map and conservation status.

[Paleontology • 2022] Titanochampsa iorii • A Large-sized Mesoeucrocodylian (Crocodylomorpha: Mesoeucrocodylia) from the Late Cretaceous of Brazil with possible Neosuchian Affinities

ABSTRACT
Most crocodyliforms of the Bauru Group were found in rocks of the Adamantina Formation, whereas the younger Marília Formation is almost devoid of such fossils. Here, we provide a detailed comparative description of MPMA 02–0005/87, a large skull roof found in Marília Formation deposits of the Monte Alto area, assigning it to a new crocodyliform. Despite its fragmentary nature and puzzling suit of characters, the new taxon possesses enough characters to reject its placement within Notosuchia, which is so far the only crocodyliform clade known from the Bauru Group. We tested its phylogenetic position with two data matrices, both of which recovered the new taxon within Neosuchia and Eusuchia. Although the material does not preserve any eusuchian synapomorphy, a neosuchian affinity is supported by: anterior extension of the meatal chamber covered by the squamosal; constricted flange of the posterior process of the postorbital; poorly developed posterolateral process of squamosal. Finally, the large size estimated for the specimen, ranging from 2.98 to 5.88 metres, coupled with its possible neosuchian affinity, suggests a possible semiaquatic behaviour, an ecology rarely explored by the predominantly terrestrial crocodyliforms of the Bauru Group.

Titanochampsa iorii gen. et sp. nov.

Etymology: The generic name congregates the latinised Greek words ‘titan’ (=large/brutal) and ‘champsa’ (= Titanochampsa ), in reference to the large size of the animal and also its previous identification as a titanosaur dinosaur. The specific epithet ‘iorii’ honours the Brazilian palaeontologist Fabiano V. Iori, due to his numerous contributions to the palaeontology of the Monte Alto region.

Holotype: MPMA 02–0005/87 (Figures 2–5), a partial cranial roof including frontal, parietal, supraoccipital, right postorbital, squamosal, quadrate, quadratojugal, and laterosphenoid.
